Quick Drive in New York; Yeah Right (.4)

At first, Sunny was in denial. There were plenty of people that wore similar clothes to her. Tons of people in New York had red leather jackets. She kept telling herself that as she and Snow searched for Wolf.

After about half an hour, Sunny was starting to get worried. Wolf wasn't in the main Business Office, his office, or even the bathroom. And neither was Crane. Both seemingly disappeared. Well, at least until they tried searching the holding cells down in the basement.

Once they got to the bottom of the stairs, Sunny stopped suddenly. "Can you hear that?"

"Sounds like... fighting?" Snow wondered. Somewhat confused.

Sunny moved to forward toward an adjacent door. Pushing it open to find what looked to be Wolf and another Fable (Blue Beard?) trying to kill each other.

"What the fuck are two doing?!"

Bigby couldn't stay focused as a cop by the name of Brannigan kept trying to talk to him.

"Mr Wolf!"

Bigby's eyes snapped away from the picture of Sunny's head.

"You're making this more difficult than it has to be," The detective told him as she slid the photo away. "If you'd just cooperate with me and answer my questions honestly, you can go home. Maybe get some sleep."

Bigby didn't say anything and kept smoking his cigarette. He was just trying to think out of his current situation.

"Let's start with the victim. How did you know her?" Brannigan asked. "Were you two close?"

"She was a friend," Bigby lied.

"Just a friend?"

"That's what I said," Bigby shrugged.

"And you also worked together at the... Woodland Luxury Apartments, is that right?"

That made Bigby realise that Brannigan had somewhat done her research. Meaning he had to try approaching the situation differently. "I guess."

"Please don't guess, Mr Wolf," Brannigan said. Sounding a little annoyed. "Just tell the truth. You and Ms Fei worked together. Is that where you last saw her?"

"Yeah, I saw her at work," Bigby internally decided maybe half-truths were the way to go about this.

"Do you know where she went after that?

"No idea. She kept to herself."

"You don't know if there was any boyfriend or family she might have gone to see?" Brannigan suggested.

Bigby just shook his head. He was asking himself the same questions, in all honesty. As the seconds ticked by, the more he wanted to go out of there and find the fucker that had done this.

"I guess you weren't all that close," Brannigan sighed. She paused for a moment before opening another folder. "Did you know you and Ms Fei's father were both born at the same hospital? The Knights of Malta here in the city. There's actually something a little weird about your records in particular. I found three different birth certificates for Bigby Wolf, all spaced about fifty years apart. What do you make of that?"

"I dunno, could be my father and grandfather," Bigby said.

"Yeah, but here's the thing, Mr Wolf," Brannigan said as she laid three copies of birth certificates out of the table. "All three of these birth certificates list the same parents, are signed by the same doctor and have the exact same birthday. The only difference is the year. "

"So, there was a screw-up with filing in the government?" Bigby feigned ignorance. "I'm shocked."

"This goes beyond a 'filing mistake', Mr Wolf. You and Ms Fei's family both have strange records, forged documents," Brannigan huffed in disbelief. "These IDs have been around for over a hundred years. You're hiding something."

"I don't know what to tell you," Bigby said before taking a drag from his cigarette. "You're making up conspiracy theories over random paper errors."

Brannigan stood up suddenly. Staring down at Bigby with anger in her eyes. "I just find it very suspicious that the victim in all this disappears for months, only to turn up dead. And one of the few connections is a man with sketchy documents and a cagey attitude. It doesn't exactly look good."

Brannigan kept glancing towards a minor to her right. There were likely other cops watching in. Brannigan moved to say something else but then suddenly started looking around the room with a confused look on her face. "Do you hear that?"

Bigby looked back at Brannigan. "Your nose is bleeding."

Brannigan kept looking in a disoriented state. She tried wiping the blood away but only smear it across her face.

"You missed a spot. You... You just smeared... You got a tissue or something...Detective Brannigan?"

"I'm Detective Brannigan," She said in confusion.

Bigby shook his head. Wondering what was going on. "Uh, yeah. I know... I just said that. Is there something-"

"What the fuck is that sound? What the fuck is happening?!" Brannigan looked around in a frieze. She slapped her hands over her ears and let out a pained noise.

Brannigan squeezed her eyes shut. Begging for the pain to stop. Bigby realised she wasn't the only one affected when he heard two thuds coming from the other side of the mirror. Bigby just watched on in confusion.

"Detective?"

Brannigan snapped around. "Who are you!?"

"I-"

"Back off!"

Before Bigby could say anything else, the door suddenly opened. Crane was standing there with a box marked as evidence under his arm.

"Ah, Detective Brannigan," Crane greeted as if she were an old friend. "Sorry I'm late; please have a seat."

"No, I don't- What's happening-" Brannigan struggled to say as she sat back down and processed to pass out. Slumping into the table.

Bigby looked at Crane in concern. Wondering how he had done this. Before Bigby could really process anything, Crane spoke up again. "We have work to do."

"What did you do to her?" Bigby stared at the unconscious detective.

"She'll be fine!" Crane dismissed. "It's just a memory wipe spell. Very expensive, but it works. The whole station will forget the last 24 hours and everything they saw. Grab anything that might implicate us, and we'll head back to the Woodlands."

Crane turned and left without a word. Bigby grabbed the camera, files, birth certificates and photo of Sunny's head. Anything to do with Fables. The entire time Brannigan kept muttering in her unconscious state. Mostly repeating what she had said to Bigby earlier. Within ten minutes, he and Crane were out the door and in Crane's car.

It wasn't the first awkward drive in Bigby's life, and it wouldn't be the last. It didn't change the fact that Bigby wanted to crawl out the window as Crane kept glancing at him.

"We, uh, we found Tweedle Dee chained up to a post," Crane told him. "That was your doing, correct?"

"Yeah."

"Well, I don't know why you detained him. Dee was at the Trip Trap when Ms Fei was left at the Woodlands, so he couldn't possibly be involved in this mayhem. Bluebeard's currently interrogating him...and he hasn't said anything useful. And, Bigby, we have to tread carefully here. We can't implicate an innocent man, and people are already worried about your conduct. As of late."

Bigby let out a huff. "There's two of them. Dee and Dum. And they were snooping Lawrance's apartment."

"That doesn't mean they're necessarily involved in the murders," Crane pointed out.

Things went quiet again as they stopped for a red light. Bigby internally cursed when Crane started talking again. A small part of his brain wanted to pass out right then and there.

"Poor Catriona," Crane said sadly as the light turned green. "You know, I never get more homesick than when one of us dies. Sunny wasn't really one of us, but ...I've never been good with these sorts of things. I just can't believe this is really happening. First her brother, now a niece."

"Give me a fucking break," Bigby rolled his eyes.

"What-"

"You've hated that whole family since they embarrassed you back in the homelands. And now you want a shoulder to cry on? You didn't care then, and you don't care now." Bigby snarled.

"That is not true! Not true at all!" Crane meekly tried to defend himself. "I thought we had some common ground...could discuss this like gentlemen!"

"Just forget it," Bigby shook his head. Suddenly remembering that the guy he was talking to was technically his boss.

Bigby would be lying if he said he was fond of Sunny's family. He didn't hate them. Emmanuel and Catriona

never gave him a reason to hate them full-on, but there were many times they got on his nerves. They weren't special in that regard. Everyone eventually annoyed him in some way or another.

Crane took a deep breath. "I don't know why I'm asking you, but did she give any indication as to what she was thinking...when you saw her last, I mean?

"She told Snow and I to stay safe."

Crane let a sigh as he pulled up to the Woodlands. "I don't know what else to say, Bigby. We have to have to put an end to this."

Bigby stepped out of the car while rubbing his temples.

"It's been two murders in as many days. If we don't unearth our culprit and soon, there will likely be another on our doorstep tonight."

"I'll get it done."

"Please, Bigby. For Ms Fei."

"I said I got it!" Big slammed the door shut. Hard enough to crack the window.

So finding Wolf hadn't been as illuminating as Sunny had hoped. Turns out he was just as clueless as them.

Sunny was walking just ahead of Wolf and Snow as they exited the basement. Her mind was stuck on the body. That, and apparently, the head that was identical to hers.

"What the hell was going on down there, Bigby? Abusing a prisoner like that... I thought you could control yourself," Snow told Wolf disapprovingly.

"I didn't lay a hand on him. I wanted to do things the right way, but Bluebeard had other ideas. I tried to stop him, Snow."

It was rude of Sunny, but she was ignoring them for the most part. It was taking all of her concentration not to start yelling in a panic. Someone had been killed, and it was likely her fault. At that moment, she didn't care about Bluebeard, Tweddle Dee or Tweddle whoever the fuck.

Sunny pressed the elevator door with more force than intended. She could feel Wolf staring at her.

"Okay, you're gonna have to explain this, 'cause I'm really not getting it yet," Wolf asked in confusion.

Sunny side-eyed him. "I went home after dropping off some evidence. Pretty soon after, Snow called me. Said she got a call from Toad. He said his son found a body. We thought it was Faith at the time."

"Getting her back here wasn't easy, but hopefully, we'll find something on her to help us track down the killer. Or at least figure out who she is. If it's not Faith's body..." Snow added.

"I should have been there," Wolf said remorsefully.

The three of them stepped into the elevator. All awkwardly avoiding eye contact.

"I tried calling the Business Office, but there was no answer. I couldn't find anyone but Sunny. So we took care of it," Snow explained.

Sunny didn't say anything. She just checked her watch. She didn't know why. Probably just to avoid the looks Wolf was giving her.

"Are you gonna be okay? I mean...with all that's happened?" His sincerity caught Sunny off guard.

"I'm fine," Sunny lied. "I just want to find who did this."

Sunny was quick to leave the elevator. She didn't want either of them to see how much her hands were shaking. "I can't..."

"What is it?" Snow asked.

"I can't help but feel like it was my fault. She had my face; what if-" Before Sunny knew it, she started talking in a rush. "But what if it was someone looking for me? And she just caught in the crossfire?"

"It's not your fault," Wolf tried to reassure her.

Sunny took a deep breath. Brushing the hair off her face.

"We just have to find out who did this. And why she was glamoured to look like you." Snow nodded.

"So what do we do now?" Sunny asked Wolf.

"We just keep doing what we've been doing. We do our jobs." He said matter of factly.

Sunny turned to the Business Office door. "We better start by talking to TJ."

"He was so freaked out last night he wouldn't tell us much. Even now, he just stops talking altogether after a certain point. He's pretty shaken up, though, so try not to be too... You know..." Snow gave Wolf a look.

"Myself."

"Right."

The three made their way back into the office. Sunny looked around. Noticing Toad and TJ over by the mirror. Along with Catriona and Liena over by her desk. After finding the body, she and Snow figured it'd be safer for them to be in the office for a bit.

Snow told Sunny and Bigby to come find her once they were ready to see the body. Before she talked to TJ, Sunny wanted to check something.

"Fuck sake!" Sunny grumbled as she poured everything out of her bag. The one thing she was looking for didn't seem to be there.

Everything from her wallet to a small bottle of perfume tumbled out.

"What's wrong?" Catriona asked as she spun in Sunny's chair.

"The letter! I can't find it," Sunny cried.

Sunny thought the letter from Faith was still sitting in her bag, and she just wanted to put it somewhere safe until it could be given to Faith's husband.

The problem was it seemed to have disappeared from her bag.

"This is great," Sunny started rubbing her eyes anxiously. "The one piece of evidence I found-"

Catriona stood up from the chair and placed a hand on Sunny's shoulder. "Hey, hey, relax."

Sunny took a deep breath and looked at her family. Catriona offered a warm smile while Liena looked up at her mother with concern. "I'm sorry about all this."

"Don't worry luz. We're fine. It's not like we had any plans to be interrupted," Catriona joked while she and Liena shared a knowing glance.

"Can I talk to TJ?" Liena asked. She took her aunt's place in the chair and started to spin in it.

"Not right now, Li Li," Sunny told her.

"Is everything okay?" Wolf asked, suddenly approaching them.

"Yes, yes," Catriona waved a dismissive hand to the Wolf. "Yenay was just helping us get settled."

Sunny couldn't stop the embarrassed blush on her face when Catriona used her full name. Her aunt was among the few people who didn't call her Sunny. She didn't hate her full name or anything. She just fell into using the nickname, and when people started getting confused about names, it just made things awkward.

"You just focus on this," Catriona assured her niece. "We'll be fine."

Sunny nodded her head. Trying to act confident for her family, but she was sure they could see the stress peaking through.

Wolf looked at her with that same genuineness. Silently asking if she was ready. It wasn't soft, but it was honest. For some reason, it helped knowing he seemed just as concerned as her.

The two walked away from the desk, over to the familiar faces of Toad and TJ. A part of Sunny found it funny. How often she had interacted with Toad in the last two days. Someone she would never be willing to spend time with was one of the beings Sunny had spent the most time with.

As the two made their way over, Toad noticed them. Quickly turning back to the mirror and shouting at it to turn off. "Ah, that's enough, mirror! Vanish! Cancel!"

"Toad! What the hell are you doing?" Wolf asked with an angry glint in his eye.

"What? I wasn't touchin' nothing." Toad lied.

"Really now?" Sunny narrowed her eyes at him.

"Don't worry, no harm done, lass," Toad waved a dismissive hand.

"What were you doing with the mirror, Toad?" Wolf pushed.

"I thought maybe I'd catch you on the shitter,"

"Always the charmer," Sunny sighed.

"I was just havin' a laugh. We've been waitin' here a long time." Toad said in a sad tone.

"Hello again, TJ," Sunny kneeled down to the boy's level. "Are you ready to talk to Mr. Wolf?"

TJ looked up at Wolf with scared eyes. He couldn't seem to stop shaking. Sunny looked back at Wolf and nodded her head. Instructing him to do the same as her. He looked a bit perturbed but kneeled down on one knee for the kid.

"Just start from the beginning," Wolf told TJ.

"I go swimming at night sometimes, in the river... I wasn't doing anything bad, I promise," TJ explained with tears in his eyes.

"Of course you weren't," Toad said in a surprisingly comforting tone.

"We know you're a good kid, TJ, really," Sunny assured him.

"You're not in trouble. Just tell me what happened," Wolf told him.

"I was there...under the big blocks. And I heard noisy feet. And when I hear that, I'm supposed to go underwater and stay real still and quiet-"

TJ continued to explain how a headless woman fell into the river with rocks (cinderblocks) tied to her feet. Sinking down to the deep parts of the river. The entire time TJ was trying not to burst into tears. Sunny felt awful for him.

TJ stopped his story for a moment to ask Wolf a question. "Is it true...you know when people are lying? I heard you could do that. That's why you're the sheriff."

"Yeah, part of my job is being able to tell when people are lying. I'm really good at it. Is there something else you want to say?"

"Please don't be mad," TJ looked up with anxious eyes.

"What is it?"

"I...I didn't stay under the water," TJ stuttered.

"What?" Toad stared draggers at his son.

"I know I'm supposed to!" Toad cried. "But I was scared, and I went to the top again. I couldn't help it."

"I gave you very specific rules! You have to stay quiet and out of sight, or bad things can happen. I told you! It's dangerous out there! If someone saw you-" The comfort attitude Toad had displayed was gone.

"Toad, please," Sunny tried to stop him.

"He's my son! I've set boundaries for a reason." Toad pointed out to her.

"This is a special circumstance. Leave him be," Sunny insisted. Poor kid was going through enough. He didn't need his father screaming at him too.

"So you didn't stay underwater?" Sunny looked at TJ.

"I don't know...if anyone saw me, but someone said, "stop laughing". And then I was scared, and I went under for as long as I could."

"Wait, you heard someone?" Sunny asked, and TJ nodded to her.

"Why didn't you tell us before?" Toad asked.

"I didn't want to be in trouble," TJ defended himself.

"Did you see who it was?" Wolf questioned.

"No!" TJ told him. "I'm sorry. After I came up again, there was no one there, and I ran home. That's all. I promise! I want to go home."

Sunny looked to Wolf. She knew that TJ wouldn't be able to take much more of this.

"Okay, you can go," Wolf sighed.

"Thank you, TJ," Sunny told the kid. Giving him a kid smile.

"Okay, son. Let's get you home," Toad said to him. Walking him away.

"You did a good job, kid," Wolf told TJ as he stood back up.

Sunny and Wolf watched the two of them go with concerned looks. Both internally, thinking over what TJ had told them.

"Poor kid," Sunny shook her head. "What must be going through his head right now... it's awful."

Wolf just nodded his head in agreement.

"I suppose," Sunny hesitated. "We better go check the body."

Sunny had this feeling in her stomach. It was one she was more than familiar with. The gnawing feeling in her guts grew when she didn't want to do something.

She knew she had to. She had to find who did this, but she also knew what she was about to see. Sunny wasn't ready for it.

"Sure, you ready?" Wolf asked.

Sunny deep a breath and nodded to the Sheriff. "Yeah, let's go."

Notes for this chapter!

Alt Title for this Chapter: Bigby tries to enter his gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss era and fails

The alternative interrogative scene is brought to you by cut content from old files in the game. I watched some really interesting videos on it as I was working on the last two chapters (it's linked to this chapter), and it was so funny to hear Cissy Jones saying fuck. I couldn't help but imagine Lilith Clawthorne finally being able to swear.

And lastly; if anyone is confused about the luz nickname, Sunny's dad's side of the family (Emmanuel, Catriona and a few others) first ended up in South America when escaping to the Mundy World. They wandered around for a good while until they were 'encouraged' to come to America and join Fabletown. It felt like it made sense to have them use Spanish terms and nicknames. I'm going with this direction since the actors I picked to base their appearances on are latino/latina.
