chapter three.
Viktor did it. He made it out of there, did something with his talents, but certainly did not make a name for himself. Due to the fact that Jayce Talis was the face of HexTech, and he was nothing but a measly partner to the man, no one ever gave him the credit he deserved. He thought about Amira every day since he left Zaun. He wanted to go back for her so bad, but he was restricted to his place in the Academy. He got his work done, and got a job as the assistant to Professor Heimerdinger, and then would go on to work with HexTech. Viktor did make his way back to Zaun once. He snuck over there one time to see Amira, and see her he did.
He took his time and strength to go back to Zaun to find Amira, and tell her of his adventures, but when he found her, she seemed.... busy.
This happened a couple years ago, Viktor sneakily stumbled into the Lanes, with simply one goal, but he was shocked to see the difference in Zaun since he had last been there. It seemed to be even more crime-ridden than it was before. He didn't think that the one person he'd come back for would add to this cause.
Viktor saw Amira actively in a fight with another Zaunite. She had a bag in her hand and was holding it away from the other person, with a knife in her other hand. She would kick them in the stomach before stabbing them in the side. Viktor watched from a distance wide eyed. Was that really her? Was that who she had become?
Was it his fault?
As soon as the other person fell to the ground bleeding, he tried to call out for her, but she just ran the other direction, and he assumed she didn't hear him.
Since then, he hadn't gotten the time to go back, and when he found Amira robbing Heimerdinger's lab, he thought he had finally found his chance to get her back. He strived to fix all of this as if it was some creation of his, like it could be done quite as easily as that. He would find out, it would be so much more complicated than that. He thought he would be able to fix it, but she ended up holding a gun to his head, threatening his life.
Viktor sat at the desk, Jayce next to him. He was tapping a pencil on the desk. Amira. Amira. Amira. That was all he thought about. It had to be his fault. His tapping got louder and more aggressive. He left her all alone. It was his fault.
The screaming in his head went silent once Jayce spoke up. "Viktor! I've been saying your name for the past minute!
Viktor jumped slightly. "M-my apologies... What's going on-"
Jayce put his hand on Viktor's shoulder before sitting down next to him. "Are you okay?"
Viktor raised his eyebrow, and left a bit. "What could you possibly mean, Jayce?"
Jayce sighed, shaking his head. "Viktor, you can talk to me... who was that?"
"I don't know what you're talking about... who's who?" Viktor acted oblivious, avoiding answering any question related to Amira.
"The girl. Who was robbing us." Jayce raised his eyebrow.
Viktor turned away before sighing in defeat. He knew Jayce, and he would probably keep pushing the subject until Viktor opened up. "Her name is Amira. I knew her... from before I joined the Academy."
Jayce nodded. "I see... is that all-?"
"She's troubled. I wanted to help her. She wouldn't allow it, and that is that." Viktor shrugged.
That wasn't that. Truth is, Viktor had always loved Amira. Ever since they were kids, what started as platonic, Viktor grew rather romantically fond of her, but never dreamed of acting on it, and since he had never stopped thinking about her, those feelings never went away. He missed her dearly, and to think she was caught up in such crime was a pain to Viktor. An issue he struggled to understand.
"Well, that's that then. Nothing much we can do now," Jayce replied.
"I'm afraid so," Viktor continued writing his notes.
Nothing much they can do now...
---
Amira knew something was wrong with her. She heard things, that wasn't normal to most people. These voices would get in her head after any minor inconvenience. They started right after Viktor left. She really did blame him for everything that's wrong with her. The voices had screamed at her for missing the shot.
Now, Amira didn't have a set home. She was homeless to a point, so a lot of the time she would crash at Zivana's apartment. Zivana had no opposition to it, in fact, she would often insist Amira take the bed rather than the couch, to which she would always refuse. After Amira saw Viktor that night, perhaps she needed someone to talk to that wasn't Silco, or Jinx.
Amira opened the window to Zivana's apartment quietly, assuming Zivana was already asleep. That was until she turned around from closing the window to see Zivana with a kitchen knife in her hand.
"Oh my god- Zi- It's just me-!? Don't-" she screamed.
"Amira-!? A warning next time, please!" Zivana put the knife down, walking over to her. "Love, why are you here so late- are you alright?"
The two sat on Zivana's couch, Zivana wrapped an arm around her. "I'm okay. Just tired. Very tired."
"Anything to do with that job you had today?" Zivana sighed.
"Yeah, that was it. It was exhausting, but now, Silco wants to send me topside more often since I did "so well."" Amira sighed.
Zivana scoffed. "Ugh, Silco. Never liked the man. Never will."
Amira chuckled at her statement. It was true, Zivana did not like Silco, and she often made that clear.
"Unfortunately, I work for him. So that outlook on life doesn't get me anywhere." she laughed again, before sighing, and zoning out.
Zivana immediately noticed, stroking the girl's head. "Okay- tell me what happened."
Amira snapped back to reality, "What do you mean?"
"Amira, you know I can tell when you're not telling the full truth. What happened on the job?" Zivana tutted, beginning to take the braid out of the girl's hair to brush and redo it.
Amira groaned, "I just- I saw someone I didn't want to see... that's all..." she nodded, giving Zivana some reassurance.
"Connections topside? You?"
"I- he's from here." Amira replied.
"Ah... okay... hey don't move-" Zivana held Amira's head straight, earning a chuckle in response.
"You act like I'm 5 years old- I'm 29, Zi!"
"Yet this braid is still filthy as ever..." Zivana gently smacked the back of her head.
"Okay- okay I'm sorry!" she laughed. Zivana never failed at making her smile. "Tell me about this person, what did they mean to you?"
---
"Think about it, Amira... things from Piltover will earn quite the prize... and will be quite useful in other... assets." Silco spoke, grinning from the other side of his desk, setting up his daily shimmer injection. "You're one of my best... you know that?"
Amira sighed. He said this often, and he's said it for a while. Even before Vander's death, and Jinx, and everything else that somewhat screwed it all up. He always said that she was one of his best, and sometimes she'd believe him
"I understand."
"Good."
She wondered, what could Silco possibly want anything HexTech related for? What did that have to do with the Shimmer production? Or maybe he was just sending her to retrieve things for the hell of it. For his fucked up entertainment of some sort. She was snapped out of her head by the sound of Silco wincing at the injection into his infected eye. She made a disgusted face at the sight... she never truly understood it.
Silco sighed, before looking back to Amira. "You can go. Piltover awaits you."
"Why me?" she asked.
"I believe I told you, you're one of my best."
"Yes, but so is Sevika. And Jinx. And Ran. Just- why me?" Amira spoke insistingly, almost begging for an answer.
"Are you questioning my choices, Amira?" when he got no response to the question, he sighed. "I believe you to be one of my most loyal, Amira. Right from the beginning. You have all the valuable qualities for jobs like this. For example, Sevika often loses her temper, and Jinx can be immature at times. Does that help answer your question?"
Amira stood in silence for a couple moments. "Yes sir."
"You're dismissed, Amira." Silco waved her off.
So she left him alone.
Silco had informed her that the next job in Piltover she would do would be in a couple days. She truly couldn't let herself get distracted this time.
Amira would do her best to avoid Viktor, but again, the places Silco would send her would make this almost impossible.
