chapter one.
"It's always "Jinx this!" and "Jinx that!" I swear he only gives two shits about what she's doing, fuck all to everyone else!" Sevika complained, throwing her arm up.
Amira looked off the balcony, her red braid thrown over her shoulder. She wasn't entirely paying attention, she was looking over at the view of Piltover at night. It was peaceful, quiet, other than Sevika.
"I'm getting tired of Silco's bullshit- Amira? Are you listening?" Sevika stopped for a second.
Amira snapped out of the trance she was in, looked up at her colleague, "Yeah- no I agree. Silco's really losing it." Amira nodded.
Truth is, Amira didn't really care. After she joined Silco all those years ago, she hated herself for a little bit with the work she was doing. She eventually got used to it, but, when Silco rose to power after Vander's death, there was no getting out of it. It was stay with Silco or die. So, she stayed. After all that, Jinx came into play. She was like Silco's daughter, almost tossing Amira to the side. Amira knew Jinx, before she was Jinx. Powder, they'd call her, back when she hung around the Last Drop. It's been years since this happened. Years since her life went to complete shit, and she had no way of fixing it.
"You look out of it- I'll leave you alone then." Sevika walked off, Amira didn't even try to stop her.
Amira was 29 years old. It had been almost 11 years since Viktor had left young Amira. 11 years, and he hasn't even come by the undercity. Or maybe he has, and he just didn't want to see her. Either way, Amira thought Viktor would hate who she had become. There was no use in thinking about it now. She would never see him again.
"Amira." there was that voice again, the voice she dreaded hearing.
"Silco." she sighed, turning around to look at him. "What is it now?"
Silco walked over to her, "I have a special job for you, my dear."
"Of course you do. Not special enough for Jinx to handle?" she scoffed.
"Attitude. Nice. Jinx... cannot be trusted with a job like this." Silco looked at her, his disfigured eye staring daggers into her soul.
Shivers ran down her spine. She wasn't necessarily scared of Silco. She had known the man for many years, and he gets less intimidating as time goes on. Even so, there were still moments where he would be on the verge of terrifying. He was always somewhat scary. Silco was like a puppet master, pulling the strings of everything in Zaun. The worst part, however, is that he had complete control over whether Amira lives or not.
"What'd you got, then?" Amira sighed.
"Topside."
"Excuse me?"
"I have a job for you, topside." Silco said slyly.
"Wouldn't that be going against your deal with the Enforcers?" Amira immediately retaliated.
"You mean the deal I control? They don't need to know as long as you don't mess up." Silco had a hint of threat in his voice. "Anyway. A professor's lab. In the Academy."
Amira's heart dropped to her stomach. The Academy. She dreaded even the mention of it. Now she would have to go there? "What- what do you need from there?" Amira cleared her throat, but Silco still noticed the hesitation, and worry in her voice.
"Anything you can grab, really. Why do you hesitate, Amira?" Silco paused, Amira turning away from him. "Is it because of Viktor?"
Amira's eyes widened. "How do you-!?"
"Remember what I said when I first found you- I keep my tabs." Silco grinned. "Now, will you take the job?"
Amira swallowed her doubts. There was no way she'd see him, and even if she did, would he remember? Would he even know who she was? Recognize her in the slightest? She needed to stop overthinking it. She inhaled deeply.
"Which professor?"
Silco hummed, amused. "Ah- Cecil B. H-"
"Heimerdinger?! You want me to rob a council member? One of Piltover's founders?!" Amira raised her voice.
"I don't believe I stuttered." he replied cunningly, the attitude lingering on his tongue. "You will do the job, do we understand?"
Amira nodded.
"Good. I'll see you tomorrow then. Good night, Amira."
"Hmm." she hummed in response, watching Silco walk away.
Amira was panicking inside. The thoughts raced through her head, the probability of seeing Viktor increased after finding out it was Heimerdinger she'd be stealing from. She had heard around that Viktor was assistant to the professor many years ago, and then when the discovery of Hextech came along, she knew he had some involvement. Viktor was a genius, he was destined for greatness, that's what she always said. There was no way something this groundbreaking was discovered, and Viktor wasn't involved. Amira smiled at the thought, but immediately wiped it away, remembering how he left her, and how it was basically his fault she was in this situation. That's what she would push through her head to stop herself from missing him, and reminiscing on the past. She hated Viktor. She always would. Nothing would stop that.
"Oh Viktor..." she sighed.
---
The next day, Amira was prepared to make her way topside. She walked into the Last Drop for a drink, sitting down at the bar.
"Hey, Zivana." she sighed, "The usual?"
"Hey, sweetheart. Are you alright?" Zivana was one of the two bartenders to replace Vander. She was always kind to everyone, despite the current state of the Lanes. She always served with a smile.
"I'll be okay, I just-"
"Well, well! Amira!" the obnoxious voice called from behind her. "Big day, no?"
Amira exhaled, "Jinx. You could say so." Amira did not want to talk to the girl at the moment, but didn't have the heart to push her away.
Jinx jumped into the seat next to Amira's, "Hey Zeze!" she grinned, watching the bartender hand a drink to Amira.
"Hey kiddo." Zivana replied, grabbing another cup for Jinx.
Jinx giggled at the response, and then looked back over at Amira. "So- whatcha feeling? Excited?"
"How do you even know about this-"
"I have ears everywhere my friend!" Jinx put an arm around her.
"Sure you do." Amira rolled her eyes. "I'll be fine. There and back. Quick and easy."
"Quick and easy, eh? If you say so! Hey Zeze-! How's it going.."
Amira drowned out the rest of the conversation, taking gulps of her drink as she zoned out. She would do fine. There and back was what she repeated in her head. There she would go. Grab anything in her reach, and immediately come back. She needed to be as fast as possible. She wouldn't want to increase the chances of seeing anyone... unwanted.
"Amiraaa....!" Jinx shook her shoulders. "I've been talking to you!"
Amira was brought back to reality by Jinx, ZIvana looking at her, puzzled. "I- I have to go. I have somewhere to be- Ah- here Zivana-" she began going through her pocket, before being cut off by the bartender.
"No- it's on the house. You have a good one, okay? Stay safe Amira." Zivana gave her a heartwarming smile, Amira nodding in response.
"Thank you..." she patted Jinx on the head. "See you around kid."
"Mhm-" Jinx replied, taking another sip of her own drink.
---
So, off she went. She waited until later in the evening to make sure she wasn't too likely to be seen. Sneaking her way to Piltover. To the Academy. Piltover was quite an active city, so it was amazing how she didn't get caught so easily. She swiftly jumped from rooftop to rooftop, before making it to a balcony located in the Academy. She picked the lock on the balcony door, quietly going in. She waited until she heard an Enforcer walk another direction before going out into the hall.
Amira briskly shuffled down the hallway, tracing her fingers on each label of the doors she walked by until she found the one she was looking for.
"Professor Cecil B. Heimerdinger"
She picked the lock of that door using the same tools as the balcony door, even though it was a bit more difficult. After a moment or so of struggling, she finally unlocked the door. Walking in, she examined the room.
"There and back." she thought to herself, nodding, before looking around at what she could grab. She took out the sack, and began grabbing different equipment. Anything she could get her hands on. Moving from tabletop to tabletop, grabbing whatever seemed important, or whatever Silco would find important.
Amira's heart stopped when she heard the handle of the door go again. She froze. She couldn't move, her breath shortened, and it got even worse when she saw who it was. He struggled to close the door, limping in with his cane in one hand, and a notebook in the other. He hadn't noticed her yet. Her feet were almost glued to the ground, and then he looked up. The worst possibility had come true.
"...Amira?"
