Chapter 9: Captured

They dropped me out in the forest. I try my hardest to pry off the bracelet. I'm not going to be their servant. Maybe I shouldn't do this. They have Kyra. I'm not going to leave her.

I walk through the forest. The zombies walk towards me. I pull out the handcuffs they gave to me. This isn't going to be easy at all. I walk through the crowd as casually as I can. A few of the slower zombies trail behind the crowd. I grab one of them by the wrists and try to get the cuffs on them. They fight back. They struggle to get away. It screeches.

Come on! Why couldn't you have just been quiet? The zombies turn their attention towards me. They know something's not right with me and what I'm doing. I let go of the zombie.

The others inspect me. They smell me. Move along. I'm one of you. One of them growls at me. It's warning me to stay away. I can't exactly do that.

I grab the zombie by the throat and slam it into the ground. I put my foot on its back and try to get the handcuffs on it. One of the zombies runs at me and pushes me over. It punches me. It won't try to bite me since I'm a zombie. I throw it off me.

The rest of the horde has moved on. Only three remain and they're eager to fight me. I draw a knife. Using my gun would be stupid when I'm so close to hundreds of them. I stab one through the eye. The other two gang up on me. One knocks me over and the other one hits me. I kill the one hitting me. I get the other tied up.

"It's done," I say into the radio that was given to me.

The helicopter lands nearby. I force the zombie inside. The whole flight it kicks and screeches.

"Kyle, shut that thing up!" the pilot yells at me.

"I would if I could!" I yell back.

It takes me and two soldiers to restrain the zombie. The zombie somehow breaks free and makes a swipe at the pilot. I grab it by the back of the shirt. I yank it back. How did the woman expect me to do this without getting everyone in here killed? The helicopter finally lands. Now the zombie is refusing to leave.

"Let me go!" It begs the soldiers.

"How stupid do you think they are?" I ask it.

I finally get it inside the bunker and into one of the cells. It wraps it's hands around the bars.

"Help!" It calls out to anyone that passes by.

The woman observes it.

"You did good, Kyle," she says.

"Can I go now?" I ask.

"No, this is only the beginning. I want you to go out. Study them as much as you can," she says.

"No, you can't keep me here. I did you a favor! Let me go," I yell at her.

Two soldiers grab my arms. I yank my arms away. I punch one of the soldiers. He falls back. His nose is bleeding. I feel a sharp pain at the base of my skull. I fall. One of them hit me in the back of the head with their gun.

They pick me up and drag me into one of the cells. I lay on the cold cement floor. The thoughts of the infected in the other cells flood my mind. Hundreds of voices are talking over each other in my head.

"Shut up!" I scream.

Kyra lays next to me. She licks my hand in an attempt to cheer me up. I need to get out of here. I can rally the partially infected to help.

"Hey, are you okay?" the girl in the cell next to me says.

"No, I'm one of the dead. I didn't think it would be like this. I can hear their thoughts. Sometimes it's too much and it gives me a terrible headache. I don't want to be here," I say.

"None of us want to be here. The guard comes every day at twelve o'clock to check on us. He carries the key to the cells. If you really want to leave, try to get the keys," she says.

"I think I will try that," I say.

Five minutes later the guard strolls down the hallway. He stops at every cell and looks inside. When he stops at mine I rush up to the door. I reach through the bars and grab him by the shirt. I pull him closer to the cell.

"Kyra!" I call her.

She runs over.

"Get the keys!" I say as I point to them with my right hand. I hold the guard's shirt tightly with my left hand.

She gets the keys. I let go of the guard. He runs down the hallway. He's probably on his way to sound the alarm. I unlock the door. I unlock all of the other cells.

"I can't believe you got them," the girl in the cell next to me says.

Five soldiers walk down the hallway and shoot at us. I run down the hall towards the exit. I reach the door. I push it open.

We all split up and run into the forest. The darkness of the night makes it easier for us to hide. I take cover inside a cave. I sit on the ground. I need to hope that they don't find me.
