Chapter 4: Mourning

I sit by the campfire. Eric is holding Olivia as she cries. Amelia sits next to me. She just stares into the fire. She hasn't cried at all since Liam died. I hope she's okay.

It was next to impossible to avoid the swarms of zombies that came at us from all angles. Especially, with Eric slowing us down.

Tomorrow morning Amelia and I are going to look for more medical supplies for Eric. I enter my tent. I lay awake for hours before finally falling asleep.

In the morning, Amelia wakes me up. I take Kyra along with us. After yesterday, I'm never going anywhere without her. A small town is our next destination. I pass by a car only to walk back to it. It's unlocked. I open one of the doors. The keys are on the dashboard. The car starts up fine. The only problem is the car is almost out of gas.

"If we can find gas in the town, we can use this car," I say.

I exit the car and continue down the road. Eventually, we reach the town.

"Where do you want to start looking?" I ask.

"I don't want to be here too long. I'll search the gas station you'll search that store. I'll meet you here when I'm done," she replies.

I head over to the store. The doors are wide open. I walk inside and close the door behind me. Shelves are overturned, and blood stains the floors and walls. A zombie is stuck under one of the shelves. It reaches for my legs. Kyra growls at it. I step over it.

I move to the back of the store. The place has been cleaned out. I hear the front door open. I climb over the counter and as I do, my knife falls out of my bag. I can't go back for it now. Kyra sits next to me. She's being surprisingly quiet now.

Footsteps echo on the tile flooring. It definitely isn't Amelia. It sounds like a group of two or more. A gunshot rings out.

"What the hell are you doing? Are you trying to get us killed? You could've used your knife to take that one down," a man yells.

One of them must have shot the zombie that was stuck.

"Don't yell at me!" A woman says.

"Shut up! Both of you! Someone is in here," a second man says.

He found the knife. He slowly approaches the counter. He peeks over. Kyra launches herself at him. He falls back. I jump over the counter. Kyra steps back. The man is dead. The other two have their guns pointed at me. A gun is on the floor by my feet. I pick it up and aim at them.

"Drop it!" The woman yells.

"Not unless you lower your weapons," I say.

The man pulls the trigger. I duck behind a shelf. The bullet missed me. They keep firing. I need to do something. I can't just hide behind the shelf. I lean out of cover. I fire the gun. The bullet strikes the woman in the shoulder. The front door opens again. I look to see who entered the store. It's Amelia. The woman grabs her and holds the gun to her head.

"If you don't come out, I will shoot her," the woman says.

I come out.

"Drop the gun," the man says.

They will kill us both whether I drop the gun or not. I take a chance and shoot at the woman. Kyra attacks the man. They're both dead. I killed someone. Killing zombies is one thing, but I killed a living person.

"Come on. Let's get out of here," Amelia says.

I follow her out of the store. The whole walk back to our campsite I replay the previous events in my head. I keep telling myself I did what I had to. If I didn't, the both of us would be dead. We turn into the woods. I don't see Eric or Olivia at all.

"Mom? Dad?" Amelia calls out.

She receives no response. Where are they? They wouldn't just leave. The tents are destroyed, the fire is out, and their bags are gone.

"They couldn't have gone far," I say.

Tracks lead away from the camp. I walk alongside them. I can see Olivia now.

"Why weren't you at the camp?" I ask.

"You need to see what I found while you were gone," she says.

She leads us deeper into the forest and to a house. The house is surrounded by a fence with barbed wire across the top. Eric is sitting on the porch.

"Did you guys find anything out there?" Olivia asks.

"No, we decided to split up. I went to the gas stations and Kyle went to the grocery store. A group came in and attacked Kyle. We had to kill them. After that, we left," Amelia replies.

"You won't have to go out and scavenge for a while. The basement of the house is fully stocked with supplies,"

I head inside. I reach into my pocket. I pull out my phone. It's been over two weeks and I haven't received any calls. I toss it in the garbage. If they really cared about me, they would have taken me with them or at least left a note.
