Chapter 2: On The Road

It's been two weeks since the outbreak started. Life as I knew it crumbled in less than twenty-four hours. I still have my phone. I haven't received a single call from either of my parents. I'm starting to think that they meant to leave me behind. I try not to dwell on those thoughts for too long.

I've been all alone these last couple of weeks. I'm running dangerously low on food and water. I just need to keep moving forward. Keep hoping I stumble across some resources.

I walk down the road. I've been walking for three hours straight. I look into the forest that is right next to the road. A cabin sits deep within the woods. It wouldn't be a bad idea to search it maybe even spend the night there.

I approach it. I peek in one of the windows. It seems empty.

Yelping and barking in the distance startles me. Zombies are attacking a pack of wolves. I run to the zombies. Only two of the wolves remain.
I stab one of the zombies in the head. The other zombies closes in on the wolves. I can't watch this. I look away. The zombies head towards me. There are three of them. One by one I take them down.

A wolf cub is sitting inside a cave. She cries out. I kneel down in front of her. She runs to me. I can't leave her out here. She won't make it by herself. How hard could she be to take care of?
I carry her back to the cabin. I kick the front door open. The cabin looks like it hasn't been lived in for years. All of the furniture is covered in a thick layer of dust.

Great, this place is probably empty. I set the wolf on the couch. She'll need a name. I walk into the kitchen and search the fridge, cabinets, and drawers. All of them are empty.

I need to find food. I won't make it much longer if I don't. I exit the cabin. The wolf will be fine. I won't be gone very long.

A little ways down the road, is a grocery store. I make my way towards it. The whole way, I'm praying that the store isn't completely picked over. I arrive at the doors. They are covered in dried blood. I have no choice but to go in. I open them and step inside. I tightly grip the knife in my hand. I silently stroll over to the canned food aisle. I'm amazed at what I see. The shelf is fully stocked. I start loading up my bag.

"What do you think you're doing?" I hear behind me.

"Drop the blade and turn around slowly,"

I comply. The knife clashes onto the floor. I turn around to face the man behind me. He's got a pistol pointed at me. He inspects my eyes. I analyze his. He eases up, but only a little.

"What's a kid like you doing out here by yourself? Where are your parents?"He questions.

"They...they left me. The night everything happened I woke up and they were gone. They didn't leave a note or even call me back," I answer.

"Can I trust you?" He asks.

"Yeah," I reply confused at the question. He lowers the gun.

"You can come out. It's safe," The man says.

Three others walk out from behind one of the shelves. It's a woman around the man's age and two teenagers, a boy and a girl. I'm guessing it's his wife and kids.

"I'm Eric," the man says before putting his hand out.

"I'm Kyle," I say while shaking his hand.

I never like shaking a person's hand. Who knows what they have touched or if they ever wash their hands.

"This is my wife, Olivia. My daughter is Amelia and my son is Liam," Eric says.

"I should be going soon. Can I take some of the food?" I say.

"Yeah, where are you going?" Eric replies.

What's it to you? He's probably going to ask if his family can come.

"I really don't think that's any of your business," I say.

"We just need a place to stay. It will only be for a few nights," Eric pleads.

"Fine," I say.

I load up my bag with as many cans and bottles as I can fit inside. I also grab a dog leash, collar, and bed. Afterwards, I begin leading them to the cabin. On the way there I come up with the perfect name for the wolf, Kyra. Eric opens the cabin door. They walk in and I follow behind. Kyra is sleeping on the couch.

"You didn't tell us you had a...wolf," Olivia says.

"Her entire pack was dead when I found her. I couldn't just leave her to die out there," I say.

Eric tries to get a fire going in the fireplace. Amelia and Liam sit on the couch. The sun sets soon after.
