24 He Was the One
Narration
Elsa was watching how Jack’s hands run over the surface of a single piece of wood. He was measuring it with his gaze, smoothing the edges with sandpaper and blowing the dust away. The sunlight made his hair shine in golden brown tone and Elsa felt now distracted. Again her feather ended pen had stop moving on the paper’s surface and she leaned her chin on her cupped hand.
She could only see his back but it made it more ease on her, when she didn’t need to watch those brown eyes that didn’t feel the longing after her anymore. This way she was able to watch at the man whose presence once lightened her day and made her feel weak after the waves of emotions that you call love hit on her cold sand shore of a mind, thawing it slowly.
She felt the emptiness inside of her, growing and consuming her. Will she ever feel the love of a man that changed her life with his love that was like a drug to her. She yarned after his laughter when his blue eyes shined just for her and the feeling of butterflies when he touched her. Now everything was different, she is just a mere customer to him. No more mocking her, no more silliness and no more fun like there used to be.
Her sigh was louder than she imagined it would be. The sound of sandpaper scratching for the wood ended. “Something wrong miss?” Now she was staring directly to those warm brown eyes that were just searching after answers. Elsa gently placed the pen back to ink bottle and forced a smile on her face, her rosy red lips were quivering. “Everything is fine,” she managed to say just before her voice break, making her clear her throat at the end.
Jack smiled to her and laughed his normal laughter that made Elsa feel even worse, she knew what that laughter meant. She couldn’t do anything to the fact that Jack hated it here. Being locked in a room and when someone tells him that he might have a free day tomorrow or the next day. She can’t let him go, his sudden appearing might cause havoc if someone remembers him still. He died 15 years ago and still looks the same, Elsa knew how hard it would have been to explain. Things were so much simpler when his appearance was all about his deep blue eyes and snow white hair, when no other adult than Elsa was able to see him.
Jack was glancing at the woman who keeps him in that room with various excuses. The main reason however was his memory loss. Elsa had told him many times that he couldn't manage to go anywhere by his own since he could forget anything in an instant.
His wishes were high, when he finishes the pillar bed that he would get the permission to live. Elsa's gracefulness is enchanting him but her coldness and suffering looks captivate him even more. He doesn’t care that she is making him stay locked up in here since he always believes the best in people.
Jack's hand is touching the soft surface of the carpet and then the floor when he tries to find the tools he needs. His fingers are searching around him. His eyes are watching the maid as if he is trying to find out things about her with simple observing. He sees her watching back which made him hit himself to finger with his carving tool. He sucks his front finger and feels the stare on his back.
He jerks his head to his side and laughs deeply. “Clumsy, huh?” A smirk runs to his face as his eyebrows furrow. Elsa’s head turns away from him just when their eyes meet. She is feeling the loss right now, the misery since she cannot touch him right now. He might be afraid of her.
Elsa is swaying herself with the chair, humming to herself and watching the ceiling. She almost falls with the chair but she quickly corrects her position. He didn’t notice her fooling around. She sighs and wraps her front and middle finger around the feather pen once again. She tries to write some royal permits but her feelings are in her way. She throws the pen back to table and buries her face on her hands, her frustrated scream gets muffled.
A hand rests on Elsa’s shoulder and a concerned voice reaches out to her. “You’re not alright.” Elsa’s body flicker’s as she feels his touch. She is now staring at Jack who is half smiling to her, his eyes are staring at hers and searching her soul. His fingers were rubbing her shoulder and Elsa watched when his eyes closed from the devious grin he was now showing to her. His head got closer to hers and his skin radiated heat that Elsa now felt on her neck. He was much warmer than before, it made Elsa shiver. “You could use a break.” The voice of his made her feel the chills on her spine.
He sees how for a small moment Elsa watches her with painful look in her eyes, his smile fades away and his hand slides off from her shoulder. His fingers ran in his hair and he slightly bends his head to his left. He can’t help to think that she really reminds him from someone.
Without a word said he goes back to his work and tries to figure out what to carve on the first pillar that he is making. He glances at Elsa who is now in front of dressing mirror, wiping her eyes and suddenly he feels bad for her. Oddly he sees that in her hair are snowflakes, delicate and perfect ones. He smiles to himself as he slowly slides the carving tool on wood and a chip of wood drops to floor. Snowflake patterns, they sound nice enough for her.
Suddenly he startles when he feels something hit his back. He looks up as he sits on the floor and sees Elsa watching him. “What are you carving?” His fingers cover the half of the first snowflake that he has done and he laughs nervously, tear from laughter is shining on his cheek. “You will see when it is ready!” He chuckles and moves himself forward so Elsa’s leg wouldn’t touch his back.
“Would you like to go out?” Elsa’s eyes watch keenly onto Jack’s whose mouth slightly opened. For a moment Elsa stays there smiling and Jack staring at her but then she realizes the meaning of her question and she flickers. “I didn’t mean it like that,” she exhales knowing by herself that it was actually what she meant in her heart.
“Yeah, we can go out,” Jack responded to her and was feeling happy right now. He could go somewhere from this room that he has been stuck in for couple of days. His only company has been this woman and it had gotten quite boring like this. Sometimes she had to leave for her work and he was left alone to work with the wood he was provided. He even had to eat his meals in that room, almost like being a prisoner in a luxury room.
However the smiling woman also made him feel curious. For him she was like the woman he had been dreaming about since his childhood. His obsession even though now the image has faded from what it was before. The woman in his dreams was the drive for him, the one who kept cheering him up when he felt sick while laying in the hospital unconscious. This woman can’t be her, it would be impossible that his imaginary friend from his dreams would be here with him right now.
“Tomorrow?” Jack blinks his eyes when Elsa asked him something. “Uh.. Sorry, what did you say?” Elsa wipes away some loose hair strands from her face and her cheeks show a mere sight of shade red on them. “Tomorrow we can go somewhere. Does it suit you?” Jack nodded to her and Elsa left the room. He heard cheerful talking of Elsa and some other girl. When the door shut he exhaled and threw away his tools.
He feels so lost at that moment, not knowing what has happened during these months. He just barely remembers that winter night when he went to aide a little girl, to save her sister Elsa. The coldness is something that he remembers, the darkness and then the nothingness. What has happened between winter and this fall? His caretaker acts weird when he has tried to ask her about it or if he could call to his home. Again this woman, Elsa, who apparently has nothing to do with the girl from his past has locked the bedroom door. Leaving him inside which made him think that why this is happening to him.
“Elsa? Why can’t I go to your room anymore?” Anna is walking with Elsa in the corridor and Elsa is deep in her thoughts. “Mmm…?” Elsa muffled and made Anna sigh while she held her stomach. Anna was on the last semester of her pregnancy and already really big. “Nothing,” Anna exhaled to her sister’s way to ignore her trying to have a decent conversation with her.
Elsa’s mind had only been set to one thing lately. She needed to find out why everything has happened, why she lost her loved one and why he came back somehow different but still the same him. Only one thing had changed, he had lost his memories from the time he was Jack Frost.
“I need to go,” Elsa mumbled to Anna when she hid to an empty bedroom. She walked to the closet and stand on her toes, reaching to the top shelf where she had hidden something. Her fingers reach onto a cool round surface. Slowly she pulls out a snow globe with beautiful design, painted in red and trimmed with cold.
“Say where you want to go and it will take you,” she said to herself while remembering the moment when she realized that her feelings for Jack were love. This is how snow globes work she assured to herself, remembering what Jack had told her. Her whole heart and soul wished that she would be at North Pole. “To North Pole,” she said with determination and let the snow globe slide from her fingers to ground where it shattered. A whirling portal opened and before stepping in she took a deep breath.
Her world spin around when she went inside, twisting even her insides. She was now standing at Mr. North’s workshop and a yeti dropped a bicycle down when he saw Elsa appearing from nowhere. “I need to find North!” Elsa said with tears in her eyes. She felt pressure on her shoulder which made her look why she felt like that. There was a big hand that was followed by arm with a tattoo ‘Nice’. Her gaze followed the arm and she saw smiling Mr. North. “Nice to see you miss Elsa. Have you seen that troublemaker lately? He hasn’t showed up after he left to see you.”
Elsa couldn’t hold it in anymore, she turned around and wrapped her arms around Mr. North. She let go all of the bad feelings she had been building up inside of her during the couple of days. North patted her back and asked from her what is wrong. Between of her sobs Elsa explained what happened, leaving North silent for a moment.
“What can I do?” Elsa looked at North and wiped her tears. North exhaled deeply and was sad looking. “There is nothing we can do dear Elsa. I believe that he is human again considering from what you’ve told me. Curses work in evil and mysterious ways, I don’t know how to fix it. I am sorry,” Elsa’s word crumbled from North’s words. There is no more fun times, no more Spirit of Winter.
“J-Jack Frost d-died and h-he is n-now Jack Overland?” Elsa sobbed and sat onto chair. North nodded, “Yes, he isn’t Frost that we once knew but he is his human self. However I can still feel the presence of the Spirit of Winter. He hasn’t left but cannot be with Jack no more,” then he smiled to Elsa faintly. “What would you say about getting to know the human side of him? He might feel as lost as you do?”
Elsa looked at North and realized that he was right. Jack needed her, he doesn’t know who he is at the moment. It is almost like when he didn’t know about his past and they were researching together. “Go to him,” North told Elsa while handing her a bag filled with snow globes. “You will be in need of those when you want to come here,” he said to Elsa who was staring at the snow globes. She just realized that Jack’s ability to fly using the wind was gone also.
The first snow globe that Elsa took to her hand was this time silver and had snowflakes painted on it. Everything reminded her from him. North took the snow globe from Elsa quickly and glared at the elves in scary way. “So sorry Elsa, Jack did this one before, “ North stop talking when he saw Elsa shedding tear drops like colorless pearls from her eyes. “He wanted you to have it if you run to emergency,” North sighed and handed the globe to Elsa. Instead of that globe Elsa used another one, the usual that was red and gold colored. The snow globe that Jack had made she placed on top of the bag gently and trying not to break it.
“When you come next time we might need to discuss about how winter will happen this year,” North said to Elsa who was about to crash the red and gold colored snow globe to return to Arendelle. “Yes,” Elsa responded plainly. “You know that the Spirit of Winter might act weird without Jack?” North sounded worried and Elsa nodded. “I will try to do something about it.”
After saying that Elsa threw the snow globe on the ground and returned to Arendelle. She picked some dinner from the kitchen and went to her bedroom. Jack was there looking out from the window. Evening sun was dancing on his fair colored skin as the sun set. He had taken his hoodie off, slowly Elsa placed the tray with food onto her small round breakfast table. Jack’s head lift up and he turned around, his brown hair was flickering in the wind and Elsa’s heart fluttered when he smirked to her, showing his pure white colored teeth.
“Oh! Hi” Jack said happily and she saw how he took his hoodie from the chair and put it back on him. Elsa felt now a little disappointed since she couldn’t watch him more like that. Her cheeks were blushing when she told him to join her for dinner. They were chatting about many things, including their family members.
He was like this always, Elsa wondered to herself. Now she realized that Jack was caring and loving person as a human like he was as Jack Frost who she loved so dearly. She was enjoying herself when Jack told her stories about him and his little sister Emma. This was something new to her and she felt little needle stings in her heart while listening, now she realized how important memories Jack had lost when he became the Spirit of Winter. Now he has them back and she wants to learn more about him.
