11 Visiting Burgess
POV Elsa
Something just made me bounce on my bed. My sweet dreams were interrupted and I groaned when I turned my head so I could see my alarm clock. “6’am” I gasped and turned so I could lay on my back.
Jack was standing on my bed and smiling annoyingly happily at this hour. “Rise up sleeping beauty,” he smirked while yelling in excitement. I put my pillow over my head as I turned to lay on my stomach. “Go away nuisance, too early!” Unfortunately my outburst didn’t have the effect I wished for. He started to laugh instead of going away. “No it isn’. Remember what day it is?” He sounded amused.
He was pulling the bed sheet from top of me. “Ah! Stop!” I yelled and tried to push him away with my feet. “I will tickle you if you don’t wake up.” He made himself sound serious and as his fingers pressed against my ribs and I heard him chuckle, that made me quickly turn around. “Alright! Ok! I am awake!” I yelled and sat on the bed’s edge. He smiled with satisfaction all over his face and as he realized that I stared at him he winked his right eye.
“Nice hairstyle,” he chuckled again and I threw the pillow at him. He jumped in the air and avoided the hit. “Let me get ready,” I made a sigh while the words came out of my lungs. For my shock he just stood there and continued smiling. “Like let me get ready -,” I took a breath before continuing, “-ALONE!”
With laughter he went outside from the window which I closed after him and pulled curtains to cover it. Today I am traveling to Burgess in America to spend this weekend. I dressed myself in normal dress, the color of ice blue but without actual ice since people might pay attention to me too much when I travel. After that I carefully combed my hair and made French braiders. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to have breakfast since I forgot what today was going to happen, gladly Jack woke me up even though I will never admit that to him. I took my passport and flight tickets from my desk and then the trolley bag from my rooms corner. I packed it ready yesterday and had to freeze Jack against the wall. He actually didn’t do anything that bad bud he just happened to came there just when I packed my underwear. So he deserved it, or maybe not. Gladly I have fast reflexes.
“Are you ready?” Jack yelled impatiently from the window. ”Yeah,” I answered and quickly stuffed my gloves to my jacket’s pocket. Jack flew back inside, he looked at me. “You know that I would help,” he was referring to my luggage, “-but it would be weird. Like when people see a trolley bag moving by itself.” He was grinning and I have to admit that the visual image from a lone trolley bag rolling inside of the airport would look a bit weird. The thought made me chuckle but soon I cleared my throat, “Let’s go Jack.”
A servant took my trolley bag to car. The driver opened the door for me which made me politely nod politely as a sign of gratitude. I waited that Jack went inside before me, otherwise the driver would have probably shut the door in front of him. Actually it was sad that no one else was able to see him.
Only after 30 minutes drive towards the airport Jack started to speak, “So how long travel is it to Burgess?” After some calculation I told him, “Almost a one day travel since the flight is long and I need to change the flight couple of times.” I didn’t want to use private planes since I wanted my travel stay as secret as possible. “That long?” Jack exhaled.
His anxiety was showing a lot. “I know a faster way!” He suddenly yelled which made me startle. “Stop the car and trust in me, please.” He was looking so determined while he narrowed his eyebrows. His look made me actually believe in him and stop the driver. “Say to send the bags after you,” Jack smiled and after nodding him back I did what he asked.
I watched as the driver left and a dust cloud was following his way while he drove off. Now I was standing next to a road. “So what is the faster way?” Before I was even finished with my sentence he was smirking and started to walk closer to me. “What are you doing?” I asked from him and felt how he pulled me close, his left arm was resting on my back. He winked his eye, “We are going to fly of course.” My feet started to lose contact with the ground. We were rising up, “No put me down! Right now!” I screamed and he looked confused.
He landed back and tried to ask me what is wrong. Quickly I took my gloves from my pocket, he seemed annoyed after he saw the gloves. “Not those again,” he sounded rude. “Sorry but it is the only way,” I whispered at the same time when I placed my arms around his neck. He startled which surprised me, when he didn’t react I took the matter in my own hands and took his hand into mine. Slowly I put his hand to my waist and wrapped my hand again around his neck.
“I am ready,” I smiled and saw that his cheeks were turning red for a couple of seconds. Or did I imagine it? Concealing my powers would be best so I don’t hurt anyone, including him. “S-so to Burgess?” He slowly started to smile too before he pressed my body against his. We rose in the air, then he started to laugh when we were 50 feet above the ground. “Sorry but-,” he let go of me and I fell closing the ground while screaming. I closed my eyes and then felt how he caught me, my body was resting in his arms. He was holding me like man would hold is bride. “Why did you do that!” I gasped. ”Easier to fly this way,” he shrug his shoulders and furrowed his eyebrows, he started to laugh when I rolled my eyes at him.
All of a sudden we started to fly fast. My hair was acting like crazy when the air was hitting on it. The ground beneath us moved with rapid speed. He was using the wind and I buried my face to his chest. He made a sudden stop, like he had hit an invisible wall. “We are here,” he yelled in excitedly.
He landed in front of a house. The address was the one where his family lives in since the street address matched and the mailbox said “Overland”. After taking few breaths I opened the fence door and we started to walk towards their front door. There were a lot of houses nearby but no one seemed to notice me flying here since there was no one outside. Jack was starting to get more nervous in each second and step we took. Soon I will meet his family.
Before I could get myself having some sort excuse why I am here the door opened and a smiling woman opened the door. Judging from her looks she was just over fifty years old, she had brown hair and one strand of grey. “Hi, how may I help you?” She asked politely. There was no way to go in circles now so I just spit it out, ”I want to talk about your son, he helped me once.” At first the woman seemed confused but then she smiled warmly and let me in. “Thank you for letting me have a conversation with you,” I said her with my most appreciative voice, “my name is Elsa and I am from Arendelle.”
The woman exhaled, “Oh! Jack moved there before his death!” Her expression went to sad for little while but then brightened again. “You knew Jack?” Then she furrowed her eyebrows which kind of reminded me of someone, quickly I glanced at Jack who in fact does the same often. Suddenly she sighed, “No, how could it be possible. You must be much younger than him.” Jack had sadness in his eyes and I started to speak fast. “I met him once,” She had turned away from me but now she turned back. “He saved me back then.. when he,” I couldn’t continue since my throat was feeling extremely dry. “He died,” she whispered.
A moment of silence, I saw how Jack walked to fireplace which was covered with photo frames. “My name is Holly,” she smiled happily, “I am glad to finally meet you Princess.” Wait, they knew who he rescued back then? Jack was staring at us with surprised expression. “You knew?” She nodded, “Yes, the king and queen of Arendelle personally gave us their thanks.”
Her cheeks were now bright red, “I am sorry your highness, please make yourself feel like home.” Quickly she pointed me to sit on sofa and told me that she will bring some refreshments. Jack was again looking the photos at the fireplace so I went to him. “My family,” he whispered and I saw his mother, father and his sister in these photos. Some older looking photos had also images from a little boy and there were also pictures from grownup boy. It was him, he was either skating or lifting his little sister to air. Always he seemed to have the same smirk he usually does.
I heard the kitchen door open so I returned to sit on the sofa and Jack sat next to me. Holly sat on an armchair and offered me a cup of coffee. “My husband will join us -,” we heard some steps, “- oh there he is!” Jack quickly turned his head on his father’s direction. He had masculine features and the same eyebrows Jack has. His father’s eyes were darker color of brown as his hair compared to Jack’s. He had got his looks mainly from his mother as it seemed. The laughter however was the same with the father and the son as I soon notice when the man started to laugh. His father's face had wrinkles from laughter. From the corner of my eye I saw Jack smiling sadly when he looked at his parents who couldn’t see him.
“So what brings a Princess to here?” Man asked playfully and I thought that his personality suits to Jack’s. “Matthew! Behave,” Holly exhaled. “Nothing to worry -,” I smiled, “Actually I am a Queen now.” Matthew’s eyes widened and he nod to honor me. “So. I would personally like to thank you and to show my regrets for your son,” I saw how Jack smirked at me.
They looked at each other and smiled. “We miss him, that is true but we would have lost him in any case,” closing to the end of her sentence Holly’s voice faded to a whisper. “What do you mean?” I narrowed my eyebrows. ”He wanted to move to Arendelle to work, it was his dream to travel before he..he..” Holly’s voice broke now and Matthew took her hand. “He was going to die,” as Matthew said that Jack seemed shocked.
“He had problems with his health. Lots of surgeries since he had a weak heart. He got a heart transplant but his body was rejecting it. He had a year tops.” Matthew smiled sadly before he added, “However I feel that he wont regret saving you. You have grown up nicely.” Matthew smiled and Holly slapped his knee. “Matthew, don’t play with the girl,” Holly laughed and I chuckled. “Actually he is -, “ Jack just placed his hand over mine and was shaking his head to sign a no for me. “Don’t Elsa. Better that they believe I am gone already,” his voice was lacking emotion.
“What were you saying dear?” Holly asked warmly. “Actually he is my hero,” I smiled, ”How may I repay this to you?” Matthew waved his hands, “No need to because-,” he wasn’t able to finish since the front door opened and closed. “Hi mum and dad!” I saw a beautiful young woman standing in the doorway. She had the same eyes as Jack and their mother, her brown hair was on ponytail. Her gaze went to me, “oh we have a guest! Hi!” She grinned and run to upstairs. ”Need to do some studies, see you later!” Jack stared at the direction where the girl went. Silent tear fell to his cheek.
“That was Emma,” Matthew said proudly. “He is about your age I think,” he added. “Yes, Jack was always protective towards her. He loved his little sister,” Holly smiled to me. “That is why he couldn’t have abandoned you back then. We are proud of him.” Jack was now holding hand in front of his face, his shoulders shake as I saw the tears slowly dripping from between of his fingers. He cried and tried not to make a sound.
“He was sick?” I whispered. ”Yes-,” Holly started to talk, ” – he was. Your parents gave Emma a fund for studies back then.” Matthew nodded, “We are truly grateful. You know that Emma is studying medicine.” His voice sounded proud, ”She wants to become a doctor, heart surgeon to be precise. She still remembers Jack and wants to help others like him.” He sure had a nice and caring family. “He was a prankster and joke master but so was I when I was young,” Matthew winked his eye. “Matthew, you still are,” Holly pinched his cheek. “Well but he brought happiness and fun even though he was hurting on the inside. That is what made him special,” Matthew continued and Holly nodded in approval. “Thank you for letting me know what kind of man he was,” I politely told them.
After discussing with them they let me go to Jack’s old room. They haven’t changed it during these 14 years since Emma had asked for it. She uses it to her studies sometimes is what Jack’s parents told me. Holly closed the room’s door after me and I was left alone, or almost alone since Jack followed me. He was looking the room and examining the objects. It looked like a guy’s room or at least that is what I believe. The walls were icy blue color which was kind of funny resemblance to the Jack Frost I know. There were some carvings from wood that I believe he had done. For my shock there was one certain profile which I quickly stuffed to my pocket. The profile reminded me a lot of, well.. A lot of me. I gazed at him but he didn’t notice what I just did. How could it be possible?
Before we left Jack took one photo from his room. He had his ceiling filled with pictures from his family, the picture that he took had him and Emma doing a snowman. His parents were watching them. I believe that it was before he left to Arendelle to fulfill his dreams that didn’t ever happen because of me. As we flew back to Arendelle he stayed quiet.
When we landed to my bedroom he turned around and pulled the hood over his head. “I guess this is it, thank you for helping me,” his voice didn’t have any emotion. I felt sorry for him since he lost his life with such a wonderful family. “Jack,” I whispered and took a grip from the back of his hoodie. “What?” He simply asked without turning around. ”Are you alright?” He sighed, ”Yeah I think so.”
For a moment we just stand in that position, me holding his hoodie and he facing his back at me. Then he shook my hand off. “Where have you been staying at in Arendelle?” I quickly asked from him and wanted to know if he had a friend to stay at. He seemed miserable. “Mmh.. At your castle’s rooftop,” he answered quietly before he asked why from me. I was shocked to find out that he had been all those nights at the rooftop of the castle, no one should be treated that way. “Stay at my castle -,” I spoke faster than I think it through, “- in my room since people would think that there is some sort of poltergeist on the loose if you would use guestroom.” I blushed and looked at his reaction.
Slowly he turned around. “Really? What makes you so friendly?” His words were almost cold. “W-well, I think we are friends so friends stick together, right?” I glanced at him but he still was wearing the hood to cover his face and so making his expressions impossible to see. “Yeah, if we truly are friends,” he stated shortly. “We are! You’re my first actual friend and I just know you’re not alright!” I snapped at him while I lifted the hood away from his face. He seemed amazed and then he smiled faintly. “Thank you,” he whispered.
