10 Searching After the Lost Memory

POV Elsa

Here he is again, laying on my bed and making my bed sheets all crumbled. While I work in front of my desk, signing papers and going through forms, he is just being lazy. From the corner of my eye I see him doing figures from snow, he is making frustrated sounds. After I promised to help him finding out who he was befre he has been literally hanging around in my room.

The tip of my pencil got broken against the paper when he again sighs really loudly which annoys me so much. “Stop it Frost!” I yell to him and he starts to sit on the bed’s edge. ”So you are alive? I thought you just drowned in your work,” he mocks at me. I roll my eyes, “fine. You want to search the archives again, don’t you?” He started to smile happily and he nodded.

This was our daily routine, it had been like this for a couple of days now. He had too much free time during the summer as he said to me so he was just hanging around in Arendelle. He had nothing to do while I worked so he just kept staring at me while I did my royal duties. I promised to help him to find about himself from the time when he was Jack Overland. Now I had just been able to tell him his name which was Jack Overland and his age from back then. He was 21 when he died. Nothing more I knew since my parents closed the door when they saw me and Anna peeking inside their bedroom while they were talking about him. One thing I knew, the information must have been placed to castle’s archives.

Unfortunately my parents were old-fashioned with their horse carriages and how they made us to dress. That means that instead of computers we had paper archives. Every night I and Jack went to basement and go through some files. From that year there were two book shelves filled with information. Normally I had some archive sorters who knew where everything was but this needed to be done in secret. My parents wished back then that Anna and I would never open up old wounds by searching information about him.

Jack was kneeling in front of the other shelf unit and going through one file that he just took. “The same old -,” he sighed, ”-people wanting some help with their finance and trades between your country and other countries.” He placed the file back and let himself fell to ground while using wind to slow it down so he wouldn't actually hurt himself. He was laying on his back and his hands were behind of his head. I have noticed that books or patience are not his thing. As usual it is only me who goes through this long line of files.

After I had gone through all the files on my eye level and below that during these last days I realized that there were few files still to go. I reached my hand up and stand on my toes. Suddenly I lost my balance and fell on top of Jack. “Ouch,” he yelled, ”what are you doing?” My face was first turning red from embarrassment but it quickly turned out to be from anger. “Jack! If you would just help me we would find out everything about you faster!” He sighed, “Well, just get up first and I will help you.”

I stood up and so did he. He cleaned his clothes from the dust that was floating in the air after my fall. “You know that I am more a day person?” He asked from me. ”What that has to do with anything?” I snapped at him. “It is just that I am a bit tired at NIGHT. Why can’t we come here during the day?” He whined. ”I have work to do that is why.”

He chuckled, “Just kidding,” he smiled at me. “So how may I help you, your majesty?” His right hand formed a fist and then his right arm was placed on his chest. His left arm was bended behind of his back as he made a bow. “Are you joking?” I exclaimed. He started to laugh, ”Yeah, but not kidding with the helping part!”

“Oh. Whatever Frosty!” I turned around to hide my amusement. “Just hand me a file from top shelf, would you?” Then I heard the sound of wind gathering towards him. As I turned around I saw him floating in the air for a small moment while he took one of the two files that were resting on a shelf near the ceiling. He landed to floor softly and handed me the file.

I sat to the floor and he was peeking over my shoulder as I started going through the pages. “Ah, the same stuff about trades!” He sighed, “Shh.. I am trying to read-,” then my eyes saw interesting headline of a newspaper cut on the file. “What now?” Jack asked from me.

”Missed Hero – A boy who rescued the Princess from drowning,” I heard Jack gasping for air behind of me. “Let me see,” he yelled with anxiety. Beneath the headline was a photo of him with brown hair and eyes, ”That is me!” He pointed at the photo, ”What does it say?” He whispered.

Without even realizing it until it was too late my finger goes over the boys photo. Slowly it draws the line of his head. Starting from his hair and following the right side of his face in the photo my finger goes. “What are you doing?” His surprised voice made me startle. ”Uh, nothing!”

I clear my throat and start to read the important parts. “One week ago during the night King and Queen’s daughter, the Princess, was saved from certain death,” I took a breath but soon Jack was urging me to continue. “Please, don’t stop. I can’t read it myself.. I.. just…” He sounded really sad.

”The boy has been declared as kingdom’s hero. His name is Jack Overland who had just moved here a week before the incident. A young life ended too soon at the age of 21. His body was never found.” Now even I started to feel sad while I am reading this. Gladly I had brought a water bottle with me so I took a sip from it to ease my dry feeling throat. “Is there more?” He whispered.

”Yes, the article continues,” I stated and kept reading forward. ”Jack Overland had proven himself a hard worker in woodwork at Rohan’s Wood. He is deeply missed by his parents and his little sister who still live in his old home town Burgess. We all are really grateful for that brave young man.” The article ended and I turned around to see Jack. His eyes were watering and as soon as our eyes met he turned his head to other direction. Quickly he wiped his face on his hoodie’s sleeve.

He tried not to show me how he felt. For a moment we both stayed quiet and then he chuckled. “W-well. Now I know more about myself,” he smiled faintly. His fingers were now nervously tapping on his staff’s surface and his gaze went to me and to floor many times. He was really nervous. “Elsa-,” he started, “- is there information about where my family actually lives? Or their names?” Never before I have heard him this determined. ”Let me see,” I looked to the other page.

I tapped at the page with my front finger, “Here is the information you want!” His head came close to my shoulder as he watched the book. His left hand was on my shoulder and my back was against his chest. Normally I would have told him that he was too close but not now. His hand started to squeeze my shoulder as I started to speak, ”It says that your parents names are Holly and Matthew Overland.” I felt him holding his breath for little while. “What about my sister? Where do they live?” He sounded anxious again. ”Your sister is Emma. They live in Burgess…and here is the address!” I ripped of the page where the information was. I handed the page to him, “Do you want to meet your family again? Here is your chance!” I smiled to him but he seemed restless.

“What is wrong Jack?” He sighed when he heard my question. “It is just that you are the only person in adults who sees me,” he was now messing his hair, “- So. I was wondering if you could come with me? Also to give me emotional support..and such.” His cheeks were blushing. “Well, weekend starts tomorrow. Let’s go tomorrow!” He started to laugh happily when he heard me. He was hugging me tightly and I let him do it since he was doing it from his heart.
