Playing Games
Scar's Perspective-
"Anthony invited me and Pearl to a game of soccer later!" Scar smiled to his father.
His father smiled back, "That's great! Have fun."
"What are you gonna do today?" Scar asked his father.
"I'm working on a new sword for the Watchers."
"Why do we call them that?"
"Because that's how we know them." Scar's mother said, "No one knows their real names or what they really look like."
"What about the prince? Do we know his real name?"
Scar's mother shook her head.
"Seems kind of weird to have rulers that we don't even know." Scar said.
"I know sweetie, but this is the way it is." Scar's mother kissed his forehead and Scar smiled.
Just then, there was a knock on their front door.
"Oh!" Scar said, getting up, "That must be Anthony and Pearl."
Scar kissed his parent's cheeks and ran out.
"Bye guys! I'll see you later!" Scar said, dashing towards the door.
"Bye! Have fun!" Scar's parents both said.
Scar opened up the door and saw Pearl and Anthony.
Pearl had her hair tied into a ponytail and her normal red coat and Anthony had a soccer ball in hand.
"Hey Scar!" Pearl and Anthony both said, smiling.
"Hey guys!" Scar smiled as he closed the door behind him.
They ran into the small park area that the Southlands had.
It was near the edge of the kingdom, and you could see the walls just over the big trees that Pearl sometimes climbed.
As they arrived at the park and slowed down, Pearl knocked the ball out of Anthony's hand and started kicking it around.
Anthony smirked and ran after her, trying to kick the ball from in between her feet.
Scar smiled as he joined them.
They had a fun time and about half an hour later, they got bored and Pearl climbed up the tallest tree instead.
"I bet I can climb this tree faster than you!"
Anthony shouted.
Pearl stopped climbing and jumped down.
"You sure?" She raised an eyebrow, a smirk on her face.
"Because I feel like I could beat you any day." She said.
"But I work at a bakery, I'm definitely stronger than you. I have to lift heavy things." Anthony bragged.
"And I work at the tavern's bar. I have to be very speedy to take orders."
"Yeah...but you're a girl."
This seemed to strike a nerve and Pearl started climbing.
"H-HEY! YOU GOT A HEAD START!"
Anthony shouted before starting to climb the tree right next to Pearl's.
Scar laughed as he watched his friends argue and climb higher and higher.
This often happened.
Anthony and Pearl were the biggest rivals but also the best of friends. While they could argue about anything and make it a competition, they also always go to each other for advice.
Scar looked behind him and saw some shade to sit in.
A soft breeze went by and Scar smiled as he took a deep breath, listening to his friends bicker.
But then, he heard a different voice.
He had heard it before.
It was Leslie. She worked at the castle's garden.
She sometimes talked with Scar and his friends and she was very kind.
Scar opened his eyes and looked over at the bit of the castle's garden that he could see.
He smiled and waved, but instead of seeing Leslie, he saw two other people.
One, who had black hair and a black mustache along with a suit, and the other who had a white mask on and a purple outfit.
Scar had never seen them before, but as soon as he saw them, he immediately felt as though he shouldn't've.
Just then, the guy with the mustache looked over and made eye contact with Scar.
Scar quickly looked away, his heart racing.
He felt as though he was in trouble.
In deep trouble.
-
Scar walked into his room and was welcomed by the warm smell of his mother's specialty, chicken noodle soup.
Scar washed his hands and then walked into the dining room where his father was sat.
He looked nervous.
"Er- hey dad." Scar said awkwardly, "Are you okay?"
His father looked at him and said, "We need to talk."
Scar now felt nervous.
This must be about earlier.
Scar's mother then walked in and sat down.
"Soup's gotta cook." She said to Scar's confused face at why it wasn't done.
"Am I in trouble?" Scar asked.
"No, sweetie. Besides, it is time for you to know." She said before looking at Scar's dad, "He does start working with you when he turns 13 in two weeks."
Scar gave his parents a perplexed look.
"Is this about working with the anvil?" Scar asked.
"No, no." His father said, "You don't work with that this early. It's about..." He trailed off and looked at Scar's mother who nodded.
Scar's father took a deep breath, "It's about the Watchers."
Scar said nothing, but his stomach turned into a knot.
I must've seen the Watcher earlier. He looked young...probably around my age. He must've been the prince.
Scar then realized that he had broken one of the rules.
"Wait!" He shouted, causing his parents to jump.
"Does that mean I'm gonna die?!" Scar asked, his voice shaking.
"No, no, no!" His mother said, hugging her son, "It's nothing like that, dear."
"B-but we're not s-supposed to know what t-they look like!"
"You're only in trouble if you tell people what they look like."
Scar sniffed and wiped his eyes, "Wait...but aren't I in trouble from you guys? Don't they know when someone sees them and talk to us? Why didn't we get a letter from them?"
"You see," His father started, "We're allowed to see them."
"Wait...what?"
"We're not allowed to tell anyone what they look like, but we meet them whenever they need our help carrying out their plans."
"What plans?"
"Well, sometimes they need us to go talk to someone and help them out, sometimes they need tools and weapons, and sometimes...they need me to give a particular weapon to someone for them to murder."
Scar's eyes widened.
"But that request is very rare!" His father added.
"We have to kill someone?!"
His father sighed, "Cara, I told you we shouldn't tell him now."
"He starts working with you when he's 13. He starts learning how to take over the shop! He needs to know this!" Scar's mother said, pulling her son into a tighter hug.
"But they come to u-us? They like t-talk to us in p-person?"
Scar's father nodded, "Most of the times I deliver the items to them or go up to the castle for meethings with them. They never really come down to the village. It's too risky."
"So I have to start..."
"Assisting me on those meetings, yes." Scar's father said, nodding.
Scar looked down.
"And you saw the prince today, sweetie." Scar's mother said.
"So they did tell you about that!"
She nodded, "They sent us a letter explaining what happened. You're not in any trouble, dear." She added at Scar's scared expression.
"You just need to know," Scar's father said with a stern expression, "That you can tell no one of what you saw. You can also tell no one of your meetings up at the castle. Not Anthony, not Pearl, no one. Do you understand?"
Scar nodded.
His father smiled, "Thank you."
"This is for your own safety, dear." Scar's mother said, planting a kiss on her son's forehead, "We just want you to follow the rules."
Scar nodded again, worried about what his future holds.
