A Day In The Watcher's Life
Grian's Perspective-
Grian groaned as he woke up.
He turned over in his bed, not wanting to get up so soon.
He was having such a good dream.
It was about him...but he was normal.
Like not a watcher.
He was just himself with parrot wings.
Flying around with no worries.
Grian shut his eyes, knowing that if he didn't get up now, he would be in big trouble.
Please. It was such a good dream.
Grian sighed as he couldn't fall asleep anymore.
He got up and dressed in his royal outfit.
A long, black sleeve shirt that had gloves on the ends of it, a white coat that had a purple gem on it, and black jeans.
Grian looked at himself in the mirror.
He then gently patted his mask.
"Ah!" He shouted in pain as he touched his mask.
A shock was sent down his body.
Right, right, I'm sorry, I just forgot.
The pain stopped and Grian sighed in relief.
Just then, there was a knock at his door.
"Come in."
Mumbo walked in, a tray of pancakes in his hand.
"Come on, you gotta eat."
"I just woke up, give me a break."
Mumbo shrugged as he closed the door behind him.
"How'd you sleep?"
"Really good. I had a dream that I was like...normal. I was just flying around. I wasn't a Watcher, I had no worries, and I was just...flying. Having fun."
Mumbo looked a bit guilty but put on a smile and nodded.
"What about you?" Grian asked, "What was your dream about?"
"You know, I don't really remember."
Grian nodded and then said, "What does mom and dad have planned for today?"
"They're doing separate things. For today, you're practicing your Watching skills with the Benson family."
Grian nodded, "Could I have breakfast first?"
"Course." Mumbo said, setting down the food at Grian's desk.
Grian smiled as he sat down at his desk and started eating while talking with Mumbo.
"Mumbo?"
"Yeah?" Mumbo hummed.
"What was it like when you were my age? Like what was your life like? What was your family like?"
"My family is still alive, Grian."
"How come I've never met them?"
"You're not allowed to meet them."
"Do you still visit them?"
Mumbo shook his head, looking sad.
"Oh...I'm so sorry." Grian said, his mouth full of pancake.
"It's okay." Mumbo smiled weakly, "I still write to them. But now that I live in the castle, I'm not allowed to visit them."
"And what was your life like?"
"I mostly helped out my family, walked around the village, and played with my friends."
"How many friends did you have?"
"Only a couple."
"Do you still talk to them?"
Mumbo shook his head, "We grew apart."
"Oh..."
"I'm not allowed to have any friends." Grian mumbled sadly.
"What am I?!" Mumbo asked, looking jokingly hurt.
Grian laughed, feeling a bit better.
"Sorry." He said, smiling, "You are my best friend."
Mumbo smiled sincerely and then looked out Grian's giant, purple window.
"But I do know what you mean."
Grian's smile faded as he looked out the window.
He sighed,
"Sometimes I wish I was out there."
He then smiled as he turned to Mumbo.
"But I like this life. I know I'm supposed to Watch. And I'm safe up here. Mom and dad always say that this life is better."
Mumbo smiled, though it was forced.
Grian didn't notice and continued to eat.
When he finished, he closed his eyes, the purple eye on his mask lighting up.
Grian took a deep breath and he found it.
The Benson family.
Two parents and their son, Anthony, were eating breakfast together. (If any of you read Where Home Is, yes this is Anthony, the guard)
Grian smiled as he watched Anthony finish up his meal fast in order to run out and play a sport with his friends.
"What are you seeing?" Mumbo asked.
"Anthony. He's going out to play with his friends."
Grian's smile flickered as he wished he could go out and play with the other kids.
"Hey." Mumbo said, causing Grian to lose his focus and snap back, "How about I go ask your parents to see if you can go outside?"
"You know I can't."
"But there's a garden outside. Maybe you can go out there. I can walk with you. And Leslie is out there right now so maybe she could show us around."
Grian smiled and Mumbo got up.
He grabbed Grian's plate and silverware and said, "I'm gonna go ask them now. Stay here."
Grian nodded and Mumbo walked out.
Grian looked out his window and down into the Southlands.
He focused and saw Anthony kicking around a ball with his buddies.
One of them was named Scar and he had scars all over his body and the other was a girl who went by Pearl. She had light brown hair that was tied into a ponytail and a red coat on, despite it being warm outside.
Grian imagined himself playing with Anthony and his friends.
Just then, Grian's door opened, and Grian snapped back.
"Okay Grian! We can go out to the garden!"
Grian turned around and smiled.
Mumbo returned the smile as he led Grian out to the garden.
Grian was very excited.
Besides, this was the closet to outside he would ever get.
