Chapter 41: An Honest Conversation

Micah was sat with Aidan as he was providing him some updates on the person who was in Pamela's house. They wanted to see if they had any insight on where Mona was.

"So, here's what the police found," Aidan said and shuffled through a series of printed documents. Micah saw a picture of the killer, and it was a huge, muscular man who had tattoos of snakes that coiled around his arm. He possessed a glossy, massive bald head and a bushy mustache stuck above his lips like a thick polluted river.

"He refused to say anything at first, but confessed that Mona came to him a few months ago, asking for a favor. He only agreed in exchange for a ton of money and sexual pleasures since he met her when she used to be a prostitute."

"She kind of reminds me of Electra," Micah muttered with a scowl, "no wonder they are working together."

Aidan frowned and was about to say something but changed his mind. He shook his head continued, "He also said that after Mona met with Pamela the first time, he followed her to her home in case she thought of revealing anything, so he'll be prepared to keep his promise to Mona."

"Why would someone do all that for someone they barely know..." Micah muttered with disgust leaking out and a face full of disbelief.

"I know. It's bizarre. He mentioned he had been keeping an eye on Pamela since then, and saw she had been taken into police custody. So I guess he figured out that Pamela was going to tell them. Which he later confirmed as he discovered Mona's documents gone from her storage. So Mona told him what to do next."

"What's worse he also said that he would do it again because Mona made it worth his time."

"There's nothing even special about her," Micah said, "all she does is betray, lie and steals people's kids."

"I know, it's really bad. But the good news is he is in jail now." Aidan smiled but it soon fell. "Too bad it won't bring her family back."

"At least an animal like him is where he belongs," Micah mumbled and then turned his body to face the front. With this update, Mariana could let Pamela know they found the person who killed her family, so it offers some type of closure.

"Anyway..." Micah's lips started shook from hesitation. He wanted to say something but contemplated whether Aidan deserved to hear it or not. He gave him a few side glances, but he knew it was the right thing to do.

"Thanks...." he started off slowly. This made Aidan turn to look at him with surprise. Micah shifted uncomfortably in his seat and moved away. "For the help with this investigation, because now Mariana and I can get our kids back soon."

He was glad all these uncomfortable and frustrating discussions paid off. He thought it would never end. Meanwhile, Aidan grinned from ear to ear but Micah narrowed his eyes, hinting he was not in the clear just yet.

"I'm happy I could help in this situation." He grinned and pat his son on the back. "It's also helped me spend more time with you."

"Yeah," Micah mumbled with lesser enthusiasm and nudged his arm off.

"I thought I wouldn't be able to see you again," Aidan confessed with his eyes toward the ground. "I tried getting into contact, but always end up at a dead end. And your mother wasn't giving me your address so I figured you wanted to be left alone, although I never understood why." He looked at Micah, who seemed to be in his own world, staring into the air, thinking deeply at everything he said.

"I always hoped I could see you one day, and now that day has come." Aidan elevated his head and beamed like a jolly, fat guy but Micah remained still as he got an arm slung around his shoulder.

"But I have a chance to think about it all these years and I don't blame you. Now I can see I didn't treat you that well when you were still living at home," he admitted with a humbling, lower tone.

Micah's words were stuck in his throat, unable to get them out. All his life he would never imagine Aidan admitting what he did was wrong. He thought he would be the same forever. But now everything was different. The change in his demeanour, no longer pointed fingers and berated him like he used to. Instead, his head drooped like it gained massive weights of guilt were hanging on, preventing him from looking his son in the eye.

Maybe that four year absence really did something.

"That time Mason slept with Electra in your room..." Aidan muttered suddenly. He paused as his actions in this memory made him embarrassed and feel ashamed of himself. But Micah already had a hard, unchanging stare set as 'Mason', Electra', and 'room' left his mouth.

"I'm sorry for taking Mason's side and blaming you for that," Aidan said, gulping down his pride with the tight struggle of his eyelids. "I guess I was just too caught up in my own, ideal plans for you that it blinded my judgment. That I was willing to find any fault in you because of that."

Micah's throat dried up as he was lost for words. He never expected Aidan to bring that old memory. It was such a long time ago that it was just a blimp in time for him. But to hear him actually apologize... now that was something.

"I don't care about that anymore Aidan. It is painful to hear sometimes, but it doesn't bother me," he said, but he had something else before the grin on Aidan's face completely loosened.

"But thanks for saying sorry. It means a lot." He allowed Aidan a faint smile. Although it was a few years too late, better late than never. It was about time he got some apologies from that time.

Aidan exhaled from relief. "I'm glad. I am really sorry for ignoring your feelings about it," he continued as Micah nodded along, secretly wanting the conversation to be over soon now.

"And for all the other times I ignored you when it came to those two." Aidan sighed and rolled his hand into a ball, which he supported his chin on. He felt a few weights of guilt lift off, but there was still that pinch of conscience bothering him.

"I guess I was too busy wanting to prepare Mason for the future that I forgot to consider your feelings, just because you didn't want to follow in my footsteps," he said earnestly, but tightened his teeth because of the hurtful reality his words carried.

"You never cared or even wanted to know how I was felt. Just as long as Mason was happy..." Micah said, his body jerked slightly with anger. "Doesn't matter if he was a total disgrace, just make sure he was happy." He turned away. "Not your other son, who actually worked hard."

Aidan stared at him at the same time Micah turned his face. They were instantly in silence as they were placed on opposite sides of a table. It was like staring into a mirror, with their reflective features. Same eye color, same skin tone, same beard. So similar, yet so different.

Maybe that's why we clashed so much. He probably wanted to mold me into a mini him, and I didn't accept.

Micah daydreamed as he was thinking. His ears were also on high alert for him to say something, anything. He wanted to know exactly what Aidan was thinking.

"You're right... I didn't," Aidan mumbled with sincerity. Micah gasped slightly as it was the right response, just the most unexpected one.

"I'm sorry I never noticed your achievements," Aidan continued. He sighed irritably and grumbled like he was loaded in heavy wind. His own actions caused him feel sick to the stomach. "I should've paid more attention to you." His dreary eyes looked up to the sky, like it was discolored from the murky lens of regret.

"No wonder you hate me." Aidan sniffed and his head sank into the comfort bed of his palms. A single tear dropped from his eye. "I haven't even done that much to earn your respect," he muttered and surrounded his mouth as all that he said came flooding back. Micah merely stared at him with a grimace as he watched him break down.

"All I did was completely disregard your feelings toward Electra..." he said while shaking his head at himself. "I even moved her in despite what problems she caused the first time she was in the house."

"You said she deserved to be there 'because Mason loves her and that's all that matters.'" Micah scowled viciously.

"I said that?" Aidan looked up as his mouth hung open. There were still tears dripping out from the corner as he was shocked at his own words.

"Yep. I remember it very well. It didn't matter she broke my heart in two or that Mom hated her guts, because Mason's feelings came before anyone else." He fired his words toward Aidan like darts towards a bullseye, wanting to strike the "eye" where it hurt the most.

"I'm so sorry Micah..." Aidan said and continued weeping. "Damn I'm such a bad father... but I am sorry about everything."

Micah watched him awkwardly keep his head down, and let out deep and quiet sobs. Aidan turned himself away and leaned on the table.

He didn't know what else he could say so he just left quietly, leaving Aidan with his own thoughts.
