Chapter 33: Interrogation
The day arrived when Mariana and Micah were called to the police station. They managed to locate this 'Pamela' person and were currently interrogating her.
Mariana tapped her fingers anxiously. They waited with Mason while hearing the woman defend herself with fright echoing in her voice. She kept denying knowing Mona's plans and knowing where she was.
"I wonder if we are going to get any answers today," Mariana muttered and squeezed Micah's hand. It felt like they had been waiting for an eternity even though it's only just been a few minutes.
"Hopefully we do. Because if she knows where Mona is, then we can get them back as soon as we can," Micah said while his leg was shaking nervously under the table.
"I'm sure she would. We've been making great progress lately," Mason said.
"Yeah, we have!" Mariana exclaimed. She was overjoyed with the results they have got so far.
"So Micah, have you, and dad been getting along okay?" Mason asked.
Well, there's been no physical fight yet which is a good start, Mariana thought to herself. She was at the end while the two brothers sat next to each other.
"Yeah, it's been good," Micah said. He just looked down at his phone. "I wonder what the police are talking about." He instantly shifted the subject as he didn't want to talk too deeply about the other thing.
"I just hope this woman can provide some answers to us." Mariana sighed. She felt like this was a crucial bit to the case. If this doesn't work out then their babies would be lost forever...
They heard the police getting increasingly impatient. Their voices got significantly louder and they were shocked when they saw the woman getting dragged out, to meet them face-to-face.
"These are the parents whose lives are now ruined because you helped their kids get taken away," one officer said, and forced Pamela to stare deep into the fiery eyes of Mariana. Her jet-black hair drooped and laid on the faint beauty mark printed on one cheek. She was shaking in her handcuffs by the intense stare she came under.
She just looked like any other regular person, but to them, she just helped in the kidnapping of their beloved kids. So was one of the worst people alive.
"Where did Mona take my kids?" Mariana immediately screeched in her face. She didn't want to waste any time as she wanted answers and wanted them now.
"Alright look," Pamela said before sitting down opposite her. "I'm sorry about what happened to your kids okay? I honestly had no idea that she would do something like that. Because all she wanted me to do was to create some fake documents for her."
"What kind of documents?" Micah demanded and punched his fist hard on the table, making it rumble like an earthquake.
Pamela shuffled her feet and rubbed her ears. She awkwardly avoided eye contact as her lips quivered in their reluctance to respond. Instead of wanting to comply, she was searching around for an escape.
"Hey! We asked you a question!" Mariana snapped her fingers sharply to get her attention. Her patience was dropping lower and faster than Pamela's frightened frown.
"Leave me alone okay!" Pamela screamed and tried getting up, but was restrained by the officers.
"I got my own problems to worry about alright? She solely came to ask me for a favor. It's what I do. How was I supposed to know she was going to use them to travel—" she suddenly stopped and concealed her mouth.
"Oh so these are travel documents," Micah said while eyeing her suspiciously.
Pamela didn't say anything else but her face was slowly turning pink as her mouth began quivering.
"What kind of travel documents did you make for her?" Mariana asked more calmly. Her immense grim eyes were like a dark abyss that made Pamela feel uneasy. The way her pupils stared at her with no movement, sent shivers into her skin that if she stared too long, she would get lost. But eventually, she caved in and sighed.
"I made her a fake passport," Pamela muttered in defeat. She sniffed and shuddered like she was tempted to cry knowing how much trouble she was in.
"So that's probably why the police in Orlando couldn't find her in the records..." Mariana said to herself. Mona probably traveled under a different name.
"I really shouldn't be saying all this stuff," Pamela played with her fingers as a dark shadow cast over the table. It suddenly grew chilly as the wind blasted open the window and whirled around the air in a heated temper.
"Well Mrs. Davis, based on what we discovered while we were searching your domain, you have quite a connection with past criminals so you're already in more trouble than you think," the officer said with a warning tone that deepened his voice. "So if you would like a reduced sentence, you would tell us something that will help us on the case."
Pamela glanced up at their frozen faces. They bore the same grave look that Mariana and Micah gave her. All these people entrapped her in a circle with their glare. It made her body heat from anxiety on what they were going to do next.
She let out a frustrated sigh and hid her face inside her palms. She kept shaking her head, telling herself 'no.'
"Even if I wanted to tell you something, I can't. If she finds out I've told you this—"
"I could care less what would happen if she finds out!" Mariana exclaimed and suddenly grabbed the collar of her shirt, shocking everyone. If she was going to get her answers, she would gladly beat it out.
"All I care about is finding our kids, now tell me which country she went to!" she demanded and head butted her. The officers tried pulling her off but her anger overpowered them. She then slammed the woman's head down onto the table, causing her to cry out in pain.
Mariana glared down at Pamela who was now clutching her head and using her other hand as a shield.
"You think that hurts? What my children have been through is ten times worse because of you! And you won't even tell me their location!" Mariana bellowed out.
"That's because I don't know!" Pamela screamed in desperation. "How many times do I have to say this?" She looked then turned to the officers with a pleading expression.
"I told you again and again, I don't know where she is."
"How are you going to make travel documents but not know where the person is going?"
Pamela shrugged like she wondered that herself. "I don't know, she just came and said I need to leave the country but with a different name."
Mariana glared at her with the thought that Mona planned all that. She really went deep with this plan. It made her think how much Mona was being genuine with her. Was everything that they talked about a lie?
"What name did you give her?" One of the officers asked.
"Um... I can't really remember..."
"We'll try! We're running out of time here."
"If you don't tell us, you're going to have children's blood on your hands," Mariana muttered in a shadowy tone. Her eyes narrowed with a menacing glare like death.
"Do you want that on your conscience?"
Pamela nibbled her lip as that sentence now stuck with her like a curse. Her fingers were moistened from sweat and slid across each other. Her breathing became stiffer as she struggled to make a decision.
"No..." she admitted with a lowly voice. "I don't want that to happen, but the thing is I have to think of my own family. She said if I reveal anything, then she's going to kill my family back home. I have my husband and two boys to think about."
"How do you know she's really going to do that?" Mariana settled in her seat and asked more nicely.
"She said she can find out where I live, and she's got someone working for her. I don't know if she's bluffing or not, but I don't want to take the risk."
"I understand that, but maybe she's just saying that to scare you?"
"Maybe..." but I don't want to go on with that threat in mind."
"But how is she going to know when she's not even here?" Mariana said.
"I don't know, I'm just terrified of what will happen."
"Well, does she know where you live?" Micah asked as he tilted his head to the side.
"Well... not really..."
"Then you have nothing to worry about!" Mariana said. She was slowly getting fed up with this woman but at the same time, she was trying to find a solution to both of their worries.
"Hmm," Pamela hummed and rocked with uncertainty in her seat, still not sounding too short.
"Well, if you're really sure, I can maybe try and find somewhere where I came up with the name for Mona," she said and also looked up for hope at the officers. "As long as my family is safe."
"If you think that Mrs.Rossi-Lupu poses an actual threat to your family, we can send some officers to watch over them while we track her down," the officer offered.
"That would give me real peace of mind. Thank you." Pamela breathed out a sigh of serenity. Her whole face glowed with the hope she was going to get out of this place in peace.
"Okay, so it's settled. You have five days to find any document on what you gave to Mrs.Rossi-Lupu and then report it back to us as soon as you can. In the meantime, we will still be analyzing her belongings that we found to see if we can get anything else from them."
"Alright, thanks! I appreciate it." Pamela then got up and grabbed her bag.
"Don't fail us," Mariana said as she watched her walk away from them. Pamela smiled shakily as she walked out the door.
"Come on, vita mia, let's go," Mariana said to Micah and took his hand.
"Thanks for your help!" Mariana said and they walked out.
"See you soon, brother!" Mason said, waving them goodbye. Micah returned the gesture, and they exited the police station to go home.
