Chapter 71: Heartwreck

When Mariana was on her way to Micah's, she held the turtledove necklace in the heart of her hand. The sun was as bright as the one in Milan, making her olive skin glow bright like the smile she had on her face. Her heart beat with joy as she got ever closer to the love of her life.

When she got there, she burst through the door like she was the ray of the sun, spreading out her wings like an eagle.

"Hi, guys!" She waved to Makayla and Mylah who were sat on the couch playing a game.

"Hey bestie!" They waved back but without looking since they were too focused on their game.

She quickly ran to the stairs because she was eager to see Micah and give him a big hug. She went up to his door but before her hand could turn the knob, she heard some creaks along the floorboard and small thuds like a bed frame were hitting the wall.

She hesitated a bit, feeling the heat of nervousness radiate off her fingers, making her sweat seep out. Her heart started beating as all the other sounds blurred into the background like a mere hum in her ear, so the only thing she heard was her anxious heart.

She didn't exactly know why she was getting so nervous, why there was a knot tightening in her chest, or a sickly feeling that rose above her stomach, but she shook her head to shake those negative feelings away and threw open the door so that everything in it was exposed and in the full bloom of the hallway light.

"Hi Mi—" Her voice became trapped in her throat like fish under ice, as her eyes stuck with betrayal to the horrifying scene right before her. An alarm clock of reality rang inside her head. Her eyes were out of control as they started leaking out tears, and her heart shattered like a sharp knife pierced her chest, leaving a black hole of pain where love used to be.

On the bed, with bed sheets scrambled everywhere, Micah was laid down as Electra was on top of him, her hands pressed against his chest, making animal noises. Everything was in clear view to Mariana as her hands dropped the turtledove necklace, breaking it into two, like the cursed thing inside of her that caused her to develop feelings for him.

Seeing Electra's drooling face made her feel sick as she ran out quickly, trying to keep her tears in but they kept coming out and resisting just made it burn.

As she was running, she got out her phone with her shaky fingers and started texting Elena, with her drops of sadness distorting the screen like her distorted perception of love. She couldn't stop her knees from crashing against each other, as she felt like she was going to collapse any minute. Inside was like she had consumed a thousand boulders and now, they were all weighing down on her heart, which was dying out of existence.

Mariana: Elena are you free?

Elena🌟: Hey girl! Yes, I am, why?

Mariana: Can you come pick me up? I need someone right now.

Elena🌟: Oh sure girl, I'm coming, where are you right now?

Mariana texted her the address but all her eyes could think of right now was letting all out, like she was a cloud releasing all the agony in the form of rain, but hers was weeping sorrows which clouded her vision, but she felt like it was better like that, for what you don't know, can't hurt you. But it already did for her.

Her legs finally gave way as she fell onto the stone-cold ground that was mercy for her burning chest that felt like it was on fire. She cried out loudly and clutched it like she was trying to stop her heart from breaking even more.

When Elena got there, she rushed out of the car as she found Mariana half-dead on the floor, in a pool of her own suffering.

"Oh Mariana, what happened to you?" Elena shouted out of panic and ran up to her. She tried lifting Mariana but it felt it was hard because Mariana was pushing herself down, feeling too weak to get up. It was like her heart had broken out of place, and was now pulling her to the ground where she belonged.

Elena managed to pull her up and Mariana gripped onto her shirt in desperation, her croaky voice cried out for help.

"He cheated on me!" She wailed out and let out another stream that could fill the whole earth. Her face was like the crimson shade of the excruciating pain within her, blood bled out her wounded heart, inflicted by the one she despised the most.

"What??" Elena almost dropped her in shock for she couldn't believe what she had heard. "Don't worry, you're coming with me." She carried Mariana to her car and carefully laid her in the backseat.

When they got back to her apartment, Elena gave Mariana a tub of Ben n Jerry's and they sat on the couch together. Mariana had calmed down a bit as she quietly ate her chocolate brownie ice cream. Her face still showed a tinge of red as she stared gravely at the blank wall. Her nose was running a bit and her eyes were sore and watery. She had not cried this much since losing her mother last year. That's all that ever happened, she loved someone, and then they get stripped away from her.

Sometimes she felt like she was cursed, with all the bad things that have been happening to her. It seemed like she would never be able to be free, it was always one thing after another, as if she was in a maze, filled with obstacles and no escape.

"So do you feel comfortable telling me what happened?" Elena asked, eating out of her own tub.

"I caught my boyfriend with his ex..." Mariana grumbled with a low tone of a growl, making it slightly animalistic like she was an animal in the wild, ready to attack.

"Oh, that's just the worst... I'm sorry Mariana, you don't deserve that." Elena patted her back and gave her a hug.

"It's okay, I didn't need him anyway..." she mumbled with the flames of anger that got ignited with her hurt. She picked up her phone, opened the chat with him and sneered with disgust at the pretty nickname she gave him, with all those lovely red hearts, she quickly removed them and soon, her fingers were skating across the keyboard at high speed, it was like the spirit of her fury flowed through her veins.

Mariana: I HATE YOU MICAH AND I NEVER WANT TO SPEAK TO YOU AGAIN. DO NOT CALL OR TEXT ME. AND IF I EVER SEE UR FACE AGAIN. I WISH I HAD NEVER MET YOU FOR YOU ARE THE ONE OF THE WORST PEOPLE I'VE EVER COME ACROSS. I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY WITH YOUR ELECTRA AND I HOPE SHE BREAKS YOUR HEART AGAIN TO TEACH YOU A LESSON.

When she sent the message, she blocked him and threw her phone somewhere while sighing. She turned to Elena who had a pale expression on as her eyes were still glued to her fingers where her phone was.

"Um... okay," Elena muttered and switched on the TV. She started watching what was on while Mariana kept sulking. There was still a sharp pain in her chest that didn't seem to go away, she felt it pinching her every time she breathed. But she tried to ignore it and watched what was on the screen.

A few hours later, Mariana was ready to go home. She thanked her and hugged her goodbye. She was glad to have her friend's support, even though she did not think it would last since nothing seemed to do these days.

She went out and started the dreary walk home. Her hands were safely tucked inside her pockets and she sucked in her lips. Her head was down while her hair cascaded in front of it, concealing like a willow tree.

That scene earlier kept repeating in her mind like a broken record, but each time, she heard it clearer and louder in her head, making her eyes well-up again. She wondered what went wrong because she was sure that when she left, they were on good terms and he despises her so she was confused about what had happened while she was abroad.

Did Electra actually succeed in seducing him? Maybe Micah just got tired of her, but she didn't want to think about it any longer as she quickened her pace, eager to get home before anything else happens and she can play her feelings out on the piano.

Suddenly, her head crashed into something and she ended up falling on the floor. She groaned and held her head, the wave of nausea flooded her brain as she looked up, but she froze once she saw the golden locks coming off Electra's wig.

Mariana gasped as Electra looked down at her with a wicked smirk. She wore a red tube top and blue shorts that were so high that they should count as underwear.

"What's the matter, Mariana? You looked shocked to see me," she giggled with the evilest tone.

"Leave me alone Electra." Mariana got up and pushed past her, wanting to get home and not even spend a mini second talking to her, nor did she want to see her corrupt face.

"Oh, what's this?" Electra said, picking up something from the floor. "What a pretty little necklace," she said, twirling it so that it glinted in the sunlight.

Mariana suddenly stopped and felt around her neck, her heartbeat accelerated as her eyes expanded in worry. She wasn't wearing her mother's necklace...

She quickly turned around and it was crying out for help in Electra's hands.

"Give me my necklace!" She screamed, not having any patience left.

"Oh, this is yours?" Electra said innocently.

"Yes now give it to me!" Mariana tried to grab it but Electra held it out of reach and walked away from her.

"Hm let me see." Electra opened it and admired the picture.

"Give it!" Mariana screamed, straining her voice as she tried to save her necklace.

"Aw is that your precious little mama?" Electra said, raking no interest. "Good thing your uncle murdered her, such a waste of life and space, her and her pathetic, little daughter."

Mariana's face puffed up in anger like an inflated balloon, she had enough of the insults that Electra threw at her late mother and decided to attack her. But Electra dodged her and hung the necklace right above a drain, halting Mariana in her actions.

"Ah ah, not if you want to lose it forever." Electra wagged her finger at her.

Mariana suddenly held her hands up, feeling anxious and not wanting anything to happen to that necklace, for that was the only thing left that she had of her family, the only connection.

Electra smirked and twirled it like it was nothing but a pair of keys. "You really care about this don't you?" She started laughing like a maniac which greatly unsettled Mariana.

"Hm, I wonder what you will do if I did this!" She suddenly dropped it, making it look like it was going in the drain but it actually just went on the edge of Electra's heel. Mariana dived toward it but it was too late as Electra stamped on the necklace, breaking it into pieces, and sending a sharp pain to Mariana's chest, as she kicked it down the drain.

"No!" Mariana let out a shrilly scream as she watched the remnants of her family go down the pipes, forgotten out of life.

"No! No! No!" She shrieked, her knees falling to the floor as she started grabbing at the concrete, trying to pick up anything that was leftover.

"Hmph, good riddance." Electra huffed and walked away.

Mariana was still trying to pick up anything, just anything that she could. Any jewelry, any pieces of paper, even just a small chain, but nothing. Everything was gone.

Electra had left her broken-hearted, with no family and no love.
