Chapter 60: Possessive
When Mariana sat on her bed, typing away on her laptop, she casually ate some granola with berries and yogurt as her breakfast. She was working on her article about curly hair and was currently writing up what she got from an interview she sent to someone by email.
She wasn't feeling any particular way this morning but one thing she did feel is extreme tiredness. Her head felt heavy and occasionally dropped like she couldn't hold it up, her eyes were slightly sore and watery, as she kept on yawning at the screen that looked like its light was mockingly flashing in her eyes. She was up till 4 am watching YouTube videos and binging some Netflix shows which were now her regret.
She sighed heavily and yawned at the same time while rubbing her eyes again. She was about to fall asleep when Rio suddenly jumped onto her lap. Her frown suddenly turned upside down and she picked him up.
"Hello my sweet baby," she said and squeezed his furry cheeks. She kissed his forehead as he meowed at her touch. His little paws pressed around her legs as his purrs were like a quiet engine.
"You're so cute," she said, scratching his head. She loved her fat, pudgy cat as he always kept her great company.
"Do you need more food?" She asked sweetly. She tried rubbing her belly but he swatted her hand away and tried to bite it. She pulled it away and wagged his finger at him.
"No Rio, no biting Mommy," she said but he just tried biting her more and clawing at her arm.
"No!" She said and gave his bum a small slap. "Bad cat."
But he just looked up at her with his dilated pupils, licked his lips and then jumped off her bed. There he sat on the floor, staring up at her.
"Hmm, I wonder if we still got some food left," she mumbled her thoughts. She then quickly got off the bed and went downstairs to check, with him quickly following his human behind.
She went into the kitchen and checked the cupboards where she kept the cat food. It seemed like she had run out of treats and only had one more packet left.
"Hmm, might need to go shopping later..." she said to herself. She decided that she would do shopping later after finishing her article.
When that time came, she got ready and wore an orange sweater, blue jeans, and white-and-black sneakers. She had a black headband on that pushed her hair back a little as she tied her laces up. She wasn't really in the mood to go out and buy food but it would be nice to restock.
She took her handbag which had all her necessities in it and went out. Today, she didn't feel like taking the car and would just walk down to the store.
She sauntered out of the house, her shoes stepping onto the pathway to outside her gate. She walked down to the shops and brought Rio some more food and some for herself.
When she got out, she glanced across the road and saw someone opening a car door. She didn't take notice at first but became even more curious when Micah's head popped out. She saw the front of his face soak in the sunlight.
She smiled brightly like a child that had just seen their favorite candy but she had seen her favorite man. She put her hand up as she was going to wave at him, but it stopped in mid-air as her body froze seeing Electra rise from the other side. She was looking fairer as ever as she brushed away the blonde waves from her powdered face. She saw her cheeks sparkled with rosy pink and this made Mariana slightly distressed.
She now felt very uncomfortable, with a pinch of confusion and pain. Seeing two of them together made her blaze in anger, even though they weren't even near each other, being in the same vehicle was too close for her comfort and besides, where did he think was taking her? The absolute audacity of him.
Mariana began following them and Micah sat on top of a brick wall. Makayla and Mylah sat between him and Electra as they started sharing some can drinks amongst themselves.
"Micah!" She shouted, the volume of her voice boomed into his ear like a megaphone. She felt her fury rise in her throat as she wanted to find out why they were together on a sunny day like this. It was too suspicious and too much sun and warmth can lead to something else.
His head turned toward her and he was very surprised to see her around this area at this particular time.
"Hi Mariana, what are you doing around here?" He asked as she stood in front of him. She was way smaller than usual due to where he was seated, so it looked like he was talking to an angry midget.
"What do you mean what am I? What are you doing here hanging around with that slut!" She screamed and pointed accusingly at Electra, who had an amused look on her face as she started smirking.
For a second, Micah didn't know what to say as he was confused by why she was so mad, but then it dawned on him the situation he was in and how it looked.
He was about to reply when Electra butted in.
"Mariana, I think you need to calm down, I told you he always preferred me," Electra said and started giggling at how wild she acted.
"Be quiet! I don't want to hear anything from you," Mariana screamed and spat in her face. Electra screeched as it splatted all over her like a spiderweb. She groaned and shivered in disgust as she felt the liquid slowly slither down like a slug was on her cheeks. She quickly grabbed a tissue from her pocket and wiped it away.
"Urgh, you're such a dirty little wretch!" Electra exclaimed.
"Look at you whose talking. How can you even call me dirty when you, are even lower than the dirt itself," Mariana hissed like a snake, pointing at her and then at some faeces on the floor. She then turned her attention to Micah. She placed her hands on her hips while impatiently tapping her foot. "Well? I'm waiting."
"Well, the thing is, Mason went out to do something and since my parents were having a big argument, we decided to tag along to get out of the house, and unfortunately, Electra came with us."
"Okay? But that doesn't mean you had to go through," Mariana reasoned stubbornly. Her arms furiously crossed around her chest as she didn't want to hear any excuses. "You could've stayed at home."
"What... what are you even talking about..." he said. How could she expect him to stay in a house full of noise while everyone else went out.
"You didn't have to go here with Electra and besides, why were you two in the same car? Couldn't you have come in different ones?"
"We didn't even sit next to each other, Makayla was between us in the backseat."
"Still..." she grumbled in a low manner, "you should've at least let me know that you were going to be near each other like that."
"Oh I'm sorry, I didn't know that I had to tell you every single detail of my life," he muttered with sarcasm and rolled his eyes.
"Yes you do when it concerns her!" She continued shouting, her eyes popping out because she thought it was obvious.
"Mariana, I haven't even done anything wrong so can't you just calm down a little bit?" he pleaded. His ears were starting to hurt and he could feel a headache coming in because of how loud she was being.
Mariana wasn't satisfied yet but she didn't have time to say what she wanted to say as Mason came back to the group.
"Okay so who wants to go to Burger King?" he asked.
"Me!" Makayla and Mylah said and leaped off the wall.
"Do you want to come with us?" Micah turned to her.
"Alright," she huffed out and quickly grabbed his hand. She kept a tight hold of it as they walked together, making sure they were at a safe distance from Electra. They entered Burger King and as soon as the scent of freshly, cooked fries hit her nose, her stomach suddenly grumbled and she started to get hungry while licking her lips, it was almost like she could taste them against her tongue.
Mason ordered for him and Makayla while Micah ordered for himself and Mylah.
"Do you also want me to order for you Mariana?" Micah asked.
"No, it's okay, I'll do it myself." She smiled and then placed her order.
They got their food onto a tray and then sat on one of the tables near the window. Everybody immediately started stuffing their faces while Mariana sipped on her chocolate milkshake while silently grumbling it. She occasionally popped some fries into her mouth but she couldn't bring herself to be in a good mood. She felt out of place in the group since Electra was with them before she came.
"So are we doing anything else after this?" Mylah asked.
"I just thought maybe after this we can go home since mom and dad must have stopped by now," Mason said.
"Aw okay," Makayla said since she hoped they could spend a bit longer outside.
They continued eating and Electra couldn't help but be in a jovial mood. She fidgeted around while slurping loudly on her coke and carefully took a bite of her burger. She felt happy that she had both Mason and Micah in her midst.
"You know, once we get home, we can have a bit of family fun," Electra said, the latter part a bit lower as she smirked over between the boys and Mariana.
"You're not our family," Micah said.
"Period," Makayla said.
"But I can be if we do something special..." she said in a despicable tone while raising her eyebrows.
If looks could kill, the glare that Mariana had on Electra would have been enough to send her 60ft under. Her words enraged her like a thousand embers had exploded out from her heart.
"You know what, Micah ain't gonna go home with you, I'm taking him instead."
"Wait what..." Micah looked, suddenly alarmed. He wanted to go home and have a rest and not go gallivanting around any longer.
"I'm not letting you go home with them," Mariana stated firmly.
"Mariana she is not going to come near me."
"Oh I know, I don't care though."
"Mariana please, I just want to go home after this." He sighed. His eyes were beginning to hurt and on top of that, his belly was full which meant sleepy time coming soon.
"So you don't want to spend time with me?" She blurted out without thinking, but it still sounded accusing.
Micah dropped his food in alarm. Now Mariana was just starting to talk plain nonsense.
"Mariana you know I love spending time with you but I just want to home, please."
"You can spend the time at my house if you want or I can call you an Uber afterward."
"Why are you being so stubborn and unreasonable like this? It's not necessary," He exclaimed with annoyance at her stubborn childishness.
But then he sighed and then buried his head within his palms. The only way to get Mariana off his tail was for him to stay with her but it was definitely not going to be for long.
"Okay, but I'm not spending the night with you because your gonna lock me in your basement."
"Haha okay," she said and wrapped her arms around his shoulders.
When they had finished eating, Micah said bye to his siblings and watched them drive away while he stood by Mariana. He felt a sense of despair not being able to go home with them but discarded that feeling once he and Mariana now had time to themselves.
"So where do you wanna go?" He said. His eyes reflected the clouds above as they began walking along the dreary streets.
"Um... maybe we can go inside a shop and look around?" She suggested.
"Alright," he said and entered into a random one around the corner.
They began looking at some clothes. Mariana found some sparkling ones while Micah looked near the window. She glanced over at him and his face resembled a gloomy day. His eyes were like decaying trees being drowned in a rainstorm on a sunny day. She suddenly felt bad about having to drag him out where he could've been at home.
She walked up behind him and then rubbed his back tenderly. "I'm sorry Micah..."
"It's okay," he mumbled.
