Chapter 50: Aspen
The first morning in Aspen, Mariana and Micah decided to have breakfast in one of the nearby restaurants. The sun's mellow light was like a midst within the snowy fog, giving off a faint, minted glow.
Mariana got dressed in a cotton sweater, warm leggings, and black sneakers. She had packed her Chanel purse and put the gold chain around her arm, giggling a little as she felt so happy because she loved the glossy black look.
She watched Micah on the other side getting ready in a black sweater, blue jeans, and sneakers.
They put on their hats and Mariana had on pink mittens. She patted Micah's cheeks lightly with them. He grinned and then looked down as he noticed that she currently wore the necklace he brought her recently, along with her mother's which was a bit further up. It suited her and the two circles attached looked like an infinity sign. Well, that's how much he loved her, to infinity and beyond.
"Come, let's go." He grabbed his coat and put the hood over the durag he had tied on.
He opened the front door and they held hands as they walked along the sleeted grass. The air was cold and dry. They could see their breaths escaping out their lungs as it rushed up into the sky.
They went downtown and into a little cafe in the corner. They sat near the window where a spiderweb resembled a snowflake, with frozen raindrops scattered all over the net. A crystal rainbow could be seen when the sun's rays glistened upon it like a gentle gloss.
Mariana ordered pancakes which came out fresh and steamy, with maple syrup drizzled on top and sloping down the sides. Meanwhile, Micah got some bagels, baked croissants, stuffed with juicy bacon, and coffee.
They started eating and having a taste of hot food felt so nice to Mariana. She sipped her hot chocolate, some of the whipped creams sneakily slid their way into her mouth.
"Mariana you got a little something..." Micah said, pointing to her lips.
"Hm?" She felt around her mouth and realized she had a little mustache made by the cream. She licked it off and laughed out of embarrassment.
He chuckled and wiped some off her nose. She continued eating and then glanced over at this croissant which made her mouth water.
"That looks nice. Can I see how it tastes?" She asked, pointing at his plate.
"Sure." He broke a piece off and gave it to her. She popped it into her mouth and started chewing. It was very delicious and made her eyes light up as she could taste the bacon.
"Here try some of this." She ripped off a part of her pancake and handed it over. He ate some as the syrup made his hands grubby and sticky, but he loved the smooth taste.
They kept feeding each other bits of the other's food and also taking pictures for memories.
When they had finished, they went out and explored around the town. They saw a fountain that squirted out rows of water from the ground. It looked like they were performing a show and Mariana certainly enjoyed it. She stuck her hands in and it was icy cold.
Her eyes then traveled upwards as she got a good view from the distant hilltops of the mountains that were laid with valleys of trees and paths that meandered between. Snow began gracefully falling from the sky, the wind carried them around, making them swirl around like sycamore leaves in the fall.
"Can we go up to one of the mountains?" She asked.
"Okay. Maybe we can go to Smuggler Mountain, do you wanna do that?"
"Okay!"
They then made their way up to Smuggler Mountain and decided to do the bike trail. They hired some bikes and then got on them with caution.
"I can't remember the last time I rode a bike," Mariana said, steadying herself. It felt so strange getting on a bike for so long.
"Same, I think for me it's been years."
"Let's hope we aren't too rusty," she said as she started peddling.
They started going down the dusty path. Their feet soon adjusted and they didn't have much trouble riding their bikes. The fierce wind blew against them, making their eyes narrow as they rode through the tree branches that had rough patches, scratches along their sides, but they still managed to kiss the skies. The rich, earthly soil was beneath them, brown and fresh with tall, icy grass growing on the side.
"Have you ever done something like this before?" Micah asked.
"Well, my dad used to take me out biking sometimes when I was a little girl," she replied, feeling the wind around her neck as her mind briefly traveled back to the good ol' days.
"Aw, that's adorable."
"Heh, thanks. Did you do anything like this?"
"Yeah, my family used to do bike rides from time to time on weekends."
"Aw, that's so nice."
They then rode down a steep hill, into a frosty, bright meadow which was had tiny leaves that filled the area with the colors of autumn. Mariana felt so happy to be riding out like this, to be away from the pressures of life and out into the depths of calming nature, along with Micah to explore what this weekend had to offer.
"Hey, Micah, " she said.
"Yeah?"
"When we get back home, we should buy our own bikes and do this from time to time."
"That's a good idea. It could be something we do in our free time or on the weekends."
"Yeah! And it could be a reminder of when we came here," she said, her lips forming a smile as she muttered the last words as that lovely thought crossed her mind.
They continued riding until they went under the lines of the cable cars. They noticed it went downhill towards the small building of Aspen Mountain so they decided to check it out. The glass windows glinted into their eyes as they climbed on the small steps leading to the entrance. They managed to book a cable car and got inside.
They sat opposite each other as it slowly started to move up the rail-line. Mariana looked outside as Micah was slouched and quickly got comfortable.
They went over some families that were eating outside, under colorful umbrellas, and walked around over the buildup of snow on the grass. There were dabs of yellow and purple lavender as they ascended higher into the air.
"Micah, thank you for taking me here, I love it," Mariana said.
"No problem my fussy baby." He smirked over at her. He would do anything just to keep his baby happy.
She chuckled and shook her head. He started laughing along, adjusting his durag a little so he can see properly
"Your hair makes you look cute right now," Mariana said, staring at him.
"Really?" He didn't really think so himself because only the ends of his single plaits were framed around his face.
"Yeah! Who did it for you?"
"Makayla," he mumbled and hid his face with his phone. His sister wanted to try braiding for the first time but her partings were quite uneven and some were scruffy.
"Aw, that's so sweet."
"Yeah." He said, trying to form a smile. Then he suddenly had an idea.
"Mariana, come sit here," he said, patting his lap.
"Okay." She got up and went over to his side to sit down comfortably. He wrapped his arms around his waist as she moved around. She found it hard to keep still because she could feel him getting hard under her bum bum. He stiffened and drew in his breath as he tried to keep her steady.
They continued admiring the scenery of the mountainous area. They went over a steep curve, hidden away by tall trees as it gradually started turning into a winter forest, as the snow settled upon the vegetation, fogging up the distance, making the landscape look like a whole 'nother world, lost in the ages of time.
When they got back to their cabin, they changed into their warm pajamas, but before going to bed, they had something to eat at the dining table.
Mariana ate some spaghetti peacefully and so did Micah. However, he was thinking about them doing something quick before bed.
"You know Mariana," he began, "I enjoyed your singing while coming here and want to hear it again."
"Really?" She looked up, quite surprised.
"Yeah, how about we do some karaoke?"
"Err...okay." She slowly put her fork down.
He got his phone out and started recording. He then started drumming a beat on the table. She soon got in tune and clicked her fingers.
"I love to get on. I love to get 2 on," she sang in harmony, closing her eyes as she visualized the song in her head. "When the drink be too strong. When the tree be way too strong." She looked straight at the camera, swaying her head.
"Get faded, turn up, bruh. Pour it on up 'till I can't even think no more," Micah also sang, accompanying her so she won't feel alone.
They both clicked their fingers, making their own instruments and being their own band.
"I love to get 2 on," Mariana continued.
"Let-let... let's roll," Micah said.
"I love to get 2 on, I love to..." Mariana's voice went slightly higher. She was really enjoying this singing session and it made her feel very relaxed.
Once they finished, Micah picked up his phone and saved the video.
"One day we can show this to our future grandkids," he said.
"Yeah we can," she chuckled and then looked outside toward the window.
"Micah look!" Mariana pointed towards the window. Outside, a strong blizzard was coming through, splattering across the glass snow that quickly dissolved into water.
They scooted closer and watched the snow as it fell rapidly.
Mariana looked at it with a bright smile, her eyes twinkled as she couldn't help but gaze in wonder. Meanwhile, Micah looked at the snow and then back at her.
"Ready to ski tomorrow?"
"Ready," she replied.
They cuddled together and watched the snowflakes fall.
