Chapter 43: Staying Safe
When Mariana was fully better and able to get out of the house, she went to Zumba again to relieve some of the aches and pains that ran down her body. She could hardly wait for this day to come as being sick of salmonella was a horrible experience. One she hoped she would never have to experience again.
She sat on the bench and began tying her shoelaces. Some of the other people that were already there were chatting and she could hear some distant shouting which made her smile. It was so nice to be in this studio again, as she needed to get rid of some leftover sadness caused by her sickness.
Not too far, Amell strolled across on the beige-lit floor toward her. His skinny, olive-toned arms swaying on each side of his tall body.
"Hello Mariana," he said. He had a simple but warm smile as his raven black hair was slicked back with gel, showing off his well-structured face. He was surprised to see her after she had been absent for so long.
"Oh hi." She looked up at his sudden greeting. She was too focused on her shoes that she didn't even see him come over until his shadow towered over her.
"Where have you been?" He asked, his time soft and full of concern since it was unlike her to miss so many sessions.
"I've been sick, that's why I haven't been coming in."
"Oh I'm sorry, how are you feeling now?" He bent down a little towards her, his voice soft and genuinely concerned for her.
"Better, thanks."
"That's good." He patted her back as a way to comfort her, he was happy to hear that she was doing well.
"So, are you going to do anything else after Zumba?" He asked out of curiosity.
"Um no, might just get a snack and go home," she said as she still felt like she wanted to rest after having a workout.
"Oh okay, is that what you usually do?"
"Yeah, I guess so." She shrugged, thinking over how simple her weekend routine was. There was not much she did on a Sunday. Oh well, that's how she usually liked it, a way for her to relax and lay back before she got up for work the following morning.
"What about you? You going to do anything afterward?" She asked, straightening her back to face him properly.
"Well after Zumba, I'll be going on a short little walk before heading home."
"Oh nice, do you prefer walking or driving?"
"Walking. I like the exercise and I usually go out jogging in the morning."
"You mean you wake up early in the morning just to go jogging?" Mariana said, her voice went slightly higher, laced with disbelief.
"Yeah, it helps wake my body up and get ready for the day."
"Oh wow, I can never do something like that. I'm way too lazy."
Amell chuckled and scooted an inch closer to Mariana as she finished her laces. This conversation was very nice and he hoped they can have more like this in the future.
Once Mariana got in line, Amell stood in front of the big group and started playing the music. It had a smooth rhythm to it as he started spinning slowly for the warm-up. He raised his arms, turning his hands, making everyone copy his actions.
Once the Zumba music got more upbeat, they changed up their movements, moving towards the side with their arms moving like waves. Mariana made a couple of steps forward and backward in an alternate pattern. She twirled around like a ballerina, feeling all her muscles crack which made her feel extremely good.
Just like it always did.

The next day, things were a lot better as Mariana headed out of her house in a turquoise blouse, with her breasts laid cozy in the small parting, and she had on white pants. Her hair was all down, flourishing and all curly with two Gucci hair clips sticking down the front part of her hair, lighting in the sun's kisses. Her whole face blossomed like flowers in the spring.
She jumped into the car and started the engine. She opened the window, letting the breeze flow through the car. It went through her luscious hair, making it blow like she was in the Savannah.
She drove through the street, with one arm on the side as her eyes squinted through the fiery wind. Her cheeks glowed like pearls, and her fake eyelashes made her natural ones look bolder. She felt so cool and her body felt light like a feather.
When she got there, she walked into the morning air of the cafe, inhaled the baking scent, and set her stuff down. She folded her apron around her waist, making sure it was wrapped tightly as it smoothed around her body.
She took her place behind the counter, her head flung up, as her brown eyes awaited the incoming customers.
"Hello Mariana, are you all better?" Elena said, coming up behind and slung her arm around her shoulders.
"Yeah, I am." She smiled, feeling as happy as her tone of voice showed.
"That's good, I missed you." Elena squeezed her tightly.
"I missed you too." Mariana squeaked from the air being sucked out of her.
"So how was your day yesterday?" Elena asked as she got the coffee machine working.
"It was really relaxing," she replied with a heartfelt smile, reoccurring the events of the preceding day. When she went home, she spent the rest of the day watching Netflix in the comfort of her snacks. She was basically glued to the couch.
"Oh well that's very good, I can tell because you seem to be in a very good mood today!"
"Yeah, I am!"
"Is that energy gonna go into serving the customers then?" Elena said in a joking manner.
"Yeah," Mariana said while she started sorting stuff in their correct section.
When the customers flooded in, so did the money. Mariana greeted each one with pleasant words, served them food, while the time slowly passed by but she didn't seem to notice because all she had in her mind was how well her day was going and what she was going to eat once she got home.
When her shift was done, she got in her car and had a little drive around before going home. The day was too good to finish quickly and she wanted to have every, single bit of it.
Her car window mirrored the palm trees that she drove past, making it look like still images frozen in time inside a blue orb. Faint clouds scattered around like pillows, and the sun's blinding light printed near the top. It looked like a painting done on the glass.
She drove around, enjoying the sounds of the outside, and parked somewhere. She got out and then walked into a park, her saunter was slow and graceful, with her black bag slung on her arm and a huge smile that curved around her cherry-round cheeks.
A pair of butterflies flew past, fluttering their colorful wings. Her eyes followed their trail, they looked like they were dancing to a symphony in the air. She let out a little giggle as they reminded her of her and Micah. She really enjoyed their night the other day, it was so romantic.
She sat down next to a fountain and brought out her red lipstick and a mirror. She applied some on her lips when drops of water rained down on her face and chest. Sprinkles landed in her hair, and a tiny rainbow formed from the arch of water that was behind her. It felt so refreshing and cooling.
When she had enough, she returned back to her car and then made her way home.
She kept her eyes firmly on the road, until a car suddenly crashed into hers at a very fast speed, sending them rolling along the street, tumbling around with glass shattering, as the car skidded into the bricks of a building.
