Chapter Twenty-Seven

  Definitely.

The town was small. Smaller than the yard, but it was an easy adjustment. Brick-paved roads were lined with shops and houses, trees spurting from the ground every few doors. Kind faces waved to us as we walked down the street, greeting me with smiles and hellos.

An open door we passed by let out sweet, savory smells, the restaurant full of chattering and laughing crowds. Down one road, a marketplace of hanging lights and buzzing people filled the sidewalks. Some people riding bikes waved to us as they rode past, shouting friendly greetings with smiles. Elderly sat on benches and in chairs outside of some shops, exchanging small conversations and smiling to the younger folks that walk by them.

Delirious grabbed my hand, pulling me forward into a run. He dragged me down the street, the others laughing at us as we ran. Ahead of me, he pointed out his favourite places. A pub that served the best pretzels, a clothing shop that sold the softest sweaters-- he wanted to take me later to get a new, less-clawed-apart one-- a bakery whose specialty is chewy pizza bread.

He eventually let go of my hand, swinging and spinning himself into a makeshift dance across the road. I laughed, stopping in my place as he stumbled over the curb of the sidewalk, tripping and plummeting into a shrub outside a pharmacy. Evan and Craig came along to pull him out after he shouted out complaints, all about how he refused to get up, and that he was a raccoon waiting to ambush a dropped packet of fries.

We continued down the street. The sun began to set overhead, dusting the darkening sky with oranges and pinks of all kind. The lamps that lined the roads slowly began to buzz to life, and so did the buildings on either side of us. Music began to sing from the businesses and homes, creating an almost ear-bleeding symphony of different songs and genres that was somewhat melodic and comforting.

"You live in a place like this?" I asked, my eyes shifting to Smitty, who walked beside me.

A smile glowed on his face, his eyes sparkling mischievously under his blue and red glasses. He laughed softly before looking back at the street in front of us. "You get used to it."
