Chapter Twenty-Five.
The sun's beams shined through the window and hit my face. I slowly opened my eyes and the first thing I saw was Hunter's long eyelashes.
His brown eyes were staring at my face as if they were taking in every little detail. I didn't even mind that he was staring at me; my pounding head was enough to distract me. I let my head roll down onto his collar bone and I groaned loudly and unattractively. I felt Hunter's hand hold the top of my head and pull a strand of hair through his finger.
"Got a headache?" He asked me. I just groaned again in reply. His chest was warm against my cheek and I didn't want to move, but I pulled my head up anyway and leaned on my elbows. Hunter's bed head made me cover my hands with my face and giggle. He looked up but clearly couldn't see his hair. He patted the top of his hair so it laid against his head now like normal.
"You're hair looks wild, too. It doesn't surprise me." He sighed happily and smirked at me.
I ran my fingers through my hair and cocked am eyebrow.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I smiled.
"You sleep like a helicopter. Oh, and you talk in your sleep." His smirk widened as he picked himself up out of bed.
"Whatever! And I do not talk in my sleep. You just made that one up." I pointed my finger at him and sat on the edge of the bed. I pulled all my long brown hair over one shoulder.
"'Oh, Hunter! I love you!'" Hunter exclaimed in a high-pitched girly voice.
My cheeks instantly flamed with heat and I began beating him with a pillow. He laughed and laughed as I smacked him with the pillow as hard as I could.
"I never said that!" I giggled. Hunter grabbed the pillow from my hands and tossed it on the floor. I rolled over so I was laying on my back beside him.
"No, you never said that. But you did say something about someone killing you." He was suddenly calm again as he told me this. I smiled, knowing what he was talking about.
"My dad is going to kill me for doing this. I'm surprised he doesn't have the cops out looking for me right now." I pressed my hand to my forehead.
"How do you know they aren't?" He asked me. I felt myself flood with anxiety and panic as I jumped up out of the bed. I began walking towards the door when Hunter stepped in front of me, blocking me from escaping.
"Jasey, I'm sure there isn't any cops out there looking for you." He grabbed my upper arms gently to comfort me. Then he smirked.
"And you still have my clothes on." He said and I looked down at myself. Hunter kissed my forehead and walked past me. I couldn't help but wonder how he could act like this around me, yet deny our kiss so many nights before. What was his plan for this?
I let my eyes falls to the ground disappointedly while Hunter searched for my clothes that were spread out on the floor. When he found them all, he came up to me and handed them to me with a smile still playing on his lips.
"What's wrong?" He asked me and reached forward to rub my arm. I quickly took the clothes and turned towards the door.
"Nothing!" My voice squeaked in attempt to make him believe me.
"Is Charlie home?" I asked as I opened the door to the stairs.
"No. We can go over there to change and eat some breakfast." Hunter explained as he pulled on his clothes and a jacket. I simply pulled my shoes on and held my clothes right to myself before walking down the steps.
Just as I had figured, the snow was extremely cold to walk in with heels on. My toes were turning red from just a small bit of contact they had with the snow.
"Okay, this is not going to work." I said as I stepped back onto the concrete in the garage.
"I knew I shouldn't have wore these things. I hate them." I whined as Hunter came up next to me. He stared at me with an amused smirk on his face.
"It's not funny." I warned him. He only shook his head and laughed at me while squatting down in front of me.
"Hop on. Just know that I don't give piggy back rides to everyone." He chuckled. I knew there was no point in arguing since there was no way I was getting to the house any faster. I put my hands on his shoulders and jumped up on his back, wrapping my legs around his waist. He hoisted me up and began walking through the snow.
"I wonder what would happen if I accidentally tripped and dropped you..." Hunter trailed off and stumbled purposely.
"I will freaking murder you, Hunter Smith. Don't even think about it. I'll be your worst nightmare." I warned with as much venom I could muster. Hunter laughed and pretended to drop me. I wrapped my arms around his neck tighter and threatened to snap his neck right then.
"Alright, alright, miss violent." He chuckled and we finally stepped up on the porch of Charlie's house.
Hunter reached for the screen door and pulled it open. It squeaked on its way open and he pushed open the bigger door to reveal a messy doorway. Winter coats were laying on the floor from what looked to have fallen off the rack behind the door. Hunting boots, work boots, and a few other pairs of shoes were sitting around. I didn't expect anything different from this since this was Charlie's house.
The steps that led upstairs were right in front of the door and were cluttered with clothing.
"Charlie's not one to clean up, is he?" I chuckled as Hunter shut the door behind us. The warmth felt so good compared to what it felt like in Hunter's room above the garage. I followed Hunter into the semi-clean kitchen and took a seat at the table.
Hunter rummaged through the cabinets and the fridge pulling out ingredients for what seemed to be pancakes. Seeing that this would probably take a while for him to make, I stood up and walked towards the living room. The upstairs light was on, revealing three doors I could see from here. One was open an I could see it was the bathroom. The other two must've been bedrooms.
"So, tell me why you prefer to sleep in the freezing garage instead of in this warm house?" I called to Hunter. He stepped out from the doorway into the kitchen and looked up the stairs along with me.
"So I could have the freedom to do whatever I want. I don't mind it." He shrugged his shoulders. I rolled my eyes at him.
"What, so you could scratch your butt freely and play with your princess dolls?" I laughed at him. He smiled brightly at me and laughed with me.
"No, so I could keep a cat in my room without getting yelled at and take care of you in your times of need." He replied jokingly. I shook my head at him.
"My times of need?" I challenged, going hands on hips.
"Yeah, your times of need." He put his hands on his hips to mock me. I giggled and shoved him back, turning around to look at the pictures that hung on the walls.
There was a family picture of three people. One was Charlie and one was Hunter's father. He appeared to be around seven years old. The third was a woman that looked similar to Hunter's dad, I assumed it was Charlie's wife.
"What happened to Charlie's wife? I've known him since I was little and I never have figured out where she was." I asked as I traced the picture frame with my fingers.
"She died of cancer when I was born." Hunter told me blatantly. I turned around and stared at him to see if he was showing any emotions.
"I'm sorry," I stated quietly.
"No, it's fine. I never knew her so It's not that much of a touchy subject." He shrugged his shoulders lightly but I could tell he was done talking about it.
I continued to look at the pictures until I came across a picture of another family. I recognized Hunter's mom right off and I couldn't take my eyes away. She looked so full of life in the picture. Her husband sat beside her with a smile on his face that looked as if it was forced. The little girl sitting on his lap had a grin that looked like it could light up the whole room. Her pigtails popped out from the sides of her head and made her look even cuter. The little boy standing beside her, in front of his mother, was looking at his sister with a smile on his face as well.
I opened my mouth to ask about it, but Hunter beat me to it.
"That was taken a year before my mom stared doing drugs and all that crap. Jamie was a cutie pie, don't you think?" He gave me a small, dad smile as he stared at the picture of his broken family. I held back the urge to grab his face and kiss him all over. The way he talked about his sister made me want to cry. She wasn't here anymore because of Charlie's son. It was hard to grasp and she wasn't even mine to lose.
"Um, what about your pancakes?" I asked when a burning smell entered my nose. Hunter's eyes flashed to mine and panic floated around in them. He darted to the kitchen and I heard him swear a few times before I walked in. I wanted to burst into guffaws when I saw him.
Hunter had flour all over his face with the bowl that had the flour in it upside down on the floor. The burnt pancake was flipped on the counter and there was a new pancake in the pan. I covered my mouth to keep from laughing.
"You know, I don't even like pancakes that much." I said quietly as I tried to hold my laugh. Hunter turned to me with a blank, flour-covered face.
"Jasey!" He exclaimed as he pulled me into a hug and nuzzled his head all over my neck and clothes. I yelled and tried to jump back but his grip was too hard.
"Hunter!" I yelled through my giggles. I heard him laughing as well when he finally stopping getting flour everywhere. It was stuck to the side of my face and sprinkled all over the shirt that wasn't mine.
I threw my head back and laughed even harder this time.
"Seriously, Hunter? This is your shirt!" I pointed at him and then at the shirt I had on. He shook his head disapprovingly at me.
"You're so annoying." He grumbled under his breath. Only I would be able to tell he was joking. I stepped up behind him as he flipped the pancake in the pan. Wrapping my arms around his torso, I pressed my head to his back and listened to his heart beat quietly. I tried not to think about this being awkward so it wouldn't turn awkward.
"Why don't you call me Beavis anymore?" I asked him calmly now. He took a deep breath but stayed standing how he was.
"Why do you call me Butt-head anymore?" He rephrased my question.
"I don't know. I guess now that I know you and your real name I can just call you Hunter." I echoed my thoughts.
"You're still a Butt-head, though." I smacked his back lightly and walked over to the table, pulling a chair out and taking a seat.
"Now, give me that pancake."
*****
"I'm not a good liar. Like, at all." I warned Hunter as we made our way to my front doorstep. My dad's car was home so that meant he was here. My car happened to be in the driveway also which made me wonder how Hunter had pulled that one off.
I could feel my face burning and the sweat building on my palms. My nostrils flared from nervousness and I could see the air leave my nose and mouth as I breathed rapidly.
"All you have to say is that you walked to work this morning and I brought you home. You can handle the details." He explained quickly while I fumbled with the doorknob.
"Okay." I whispered to myself.
Slowly I opened the door and let hit the wall easily. I stepped inside and moved so Hunter could come in behind me. I took Hunter's coat off easily and realized I didn't think about what my clothes would look like. My dad would ask me why I wore heels to the diner. My eyes widened with fear of getting caught and I quickly ripped my shoes off my feet. I tossed them at Hunter in a panic and watched him stare at me in shock.
"Jasey?" I heard my dad's booming voice call throughout the house. I glanced down and saw my red cowboy boots sitting there. Without another thought I pulled them on and looked to Hunter to see him with a calm expression on his face.
"Hey, dad." I said in a shaky voice once he came around the corner. His expression was hard and almost angry.
"Do you want to explain to me where you've been?" He crossed his arms over his chest and looked past me at Hunter. His expression didn't change. Reese suddenly appeared behind my dad with a confused look on his face.
"I-I walked to work early this morning. Danny called and said he needed some last minute help. Hunter met me and brought me here." I cleared my voice to help myself feel less nervous. It didn't help at all. I knew I was dead the moment I walked in there.
"That's a lie, Jasey. I was so worried about you that I called Danny and he said he hadn't seen today at all." My dad's face was red now which indicated that he was angry. Very angry.
Before I had a chance to just completely confess so my punishment wouldn't be near as bad, Hunter stepped in front of me. I saw my heels stuffed in the back of his pants. They were very noticeable so I quietly prayed that he wouldn't have to turn around.
"Sir, I know this looks bad. It's my fault. I asked her last night if she'd help me finish a project for science we had to do that I forgot about. She was gone the whole time with me at my house. Charlie was there also, sir." My mouth dropped open at how Hunter could lie so smoothly and make it sound so true. I was almost jealous at his skills.
My dad's voice brought me out of my state of mind and I quickly shut my mouth.
"That's why you felt the need to lie to me, Jasey? You couldn't have just asked me if you could go?" My dad sounded the slightest but hurt and I felt a jab of guilt hit me straight in the gut.
"I'm sorry dad. You were tired and I just thought I'd go so I wouldn't bother you." I said took quickly. My dad shook his head and then nodded it.
"Alright. But next time ask me if you can go to a boy's house. I would've let you, but only if there was an adult there. Charlie was there, right?" Dad babbled on.
"Yes," Hunter and I answered at the same time. My dad nodded his head at me.
"Okay. Hunter, I better not hear of this sneaking out again." Dad gave us both a stern look before walking back into the living room. Reese pursed his lips and disappeared into the hallway.
Hunter turned to me and gave me a small smile and handed me the heels that were stuck on his pants.
"Thank you so much, Hunter." I whispered so my dad wouldn't hear me.
"It's fine. I'll see you later, Beavis." He grinned at me and opened the door to leave.
"Bye, Butt-head." I grinned back and watched him pull out of the drive way. I slipped my boots off my bare feet and sat them back in their place. With my heels held to my side, I walked back to my room with a smile on my face.
I pushed my door open and my smile faded. Reese was laying with his back on my bed, a magazine in his hands and my radio playing cheesy pop music as he sang along in his girly voice.
Annoyed that he welcomed himself into my room, I marched over to the radio and flipped the off button while tossing my heels into my closet. Reese lowered the magazine and sat up on his elbow to look at me.
"What do you want?" I asked him. Reese took his time to sit the magazine down on the floor and let his legs sit off the side of the bed. He had a look of disappointment on his face. I sat down beside him on the edge of my bed.
"What's wrong?" I asked since he looked really disappointed.
"You're just going to let him take the blame? I don't want you to turn into those sleeze-bags that take advantage of other guys." He told me honestly.
"I don't do that and I wouldn't do that. Neither of us is even getting in trouble." I reasoned with him.
"That's not even the point." He shook his head furiously. "Do you see how you've been acting lately? You've changed yourself for him." I was stunned into silence now. Has he really been paying attention to me that much?
"I-I'm sorry." I gasped. Reese turned to me and his eyes widened at the sad look in my eyes. "I know I have. But... It'll be okay. It's just a one time thing."
Reese ran a hand through his hair and tossed an arm over my shoulder.
"Please don't change yourself for him just because you think he doesn't like you. If it helps, I like you just the way you are." Reese pulled my head closer to him so he could kiss my forehead and pat it.
I let out a quiet chuckle.
"I was just gabberflasted with you." Reese gasped dramatically yet jokingly. I giggled.
"Reese, it's flabbergasted." I told him. He smiled and stood up from my bed.
"Whatever," He said as he stood in my doorway.
"But if it really matters to you, it's obvious Hunter likes you." Reese said in the girliest yet most sincere way possible. I grinned from ear to ear and covered my face as I fell back onto my bed.
