Chapter Three.
The boy gave me a weird look as I continued to gawk at him. I had one very sane question to ask him.
"What are you doing here?" I asked him. Lilly's face was completely white. What was so frightening?
"I needed somewhere to sit." He replied without a trace of emotion. Well, an angry emotion. His voice surprised me.
"Why?" I managed to get out.
He just rolled his eyes and turned his attention back to our nasty school food. I looked at Lilly who was already staring at with her jaw unhinged. Then I realized people were staring at our table. They were looking at the new guy.
"Hey, where did you get that bandana?" I asked him after catching sight of it sticking out of his back pocket. He smirked at me, probably for looking at his butt, and pulled the all to familiar bandana out of his pocket.
"I found it. You like it?" He asked me. I was to aware of the people staring at the two of us right now. If I pulled him away to ask him where he found it, then I'd really be noticed.
Instead of telling him it looks like the same one I use for work, I shook my head a little to quickly.
"Huh-uh." I said with a frown on my face.
All through the rest of lunch time, I couldn't stop thinking about how weird things were today. First, I see the same dark blue Camaro that almost killed me last night, then I hear a very familiar voice from the boy I've never met, and now my bandana. Did I lose it last night?
Then it clicked.
How could I not have known that?! It was so obvious. This guy was the one who almost ran over me. He was the one who so rude about it, too.
I glared daggers at him from the corner of my eyes until lunch was finally over. I shot out of my seat and was much too eager to get to my last class of the day.
I didn't have to work today since it was Friday. I was always thankful that Danny gave me off Friday's, Saturday's, and Sunday's.
I sat down in my history class, happy that it was finally the end of the day. I would be more than happy to get out of school and go to work rather than stay here any longer.
When the tardy bell rang, our teacher, Mr. Forbes, shut the door behind him as he walked in, eyes roaming a piece of paper in his hands. Just before the door clicked shut, someone's foot blocked it. Mr. Forbes opened the door for the student to come in, not saying a word to him.
"Class, we have a new student." Mr. Forbes said in a bored tone. Of course I knew who that was. And here I was hoping to not have any classes with him.
"Mr. Hunter Smith," Mr. Forbes said his name aloud, "please take a seat." So that's his name.
Hunter Smith, I thought to myself.
Hunter's cocky arrogant butt crossed the room until he stopped in front of my row. I sat in the fourth seat back with one empty seat behind me. This couldn't have turned out to be a better day.
I made sure not to look up at him as he passed, the cologne I didn't realize he had on filled my nose. My bandana was still in his back pocket.
I pulled out my notebook, determined to get some school work done today, when I felt something hit me in the back of the head. What does he want now?
I turned around to look at him but not before I made sure Mr. Forbes wasn't looking.
"Leave me alone, Hunter." I said, using his name to my advantage. I turned back around and jotted down what was written on the board.
Another piece of paper thumped me in the back if the head. Grumbling quietly under my breath, I turned around and chucked a crumpled piece if paper if my own at his face. It tapped his nose and fell down onto his lap. Annoyed, I turned back around.
"Hey," Hunter started with yet another piece of paper thrown at my back. I ripped off a tiny piece of notebook paper from my notes and turned around while rolling the paper in my hands.
"Yes?" I asked sweetly with a smile on my lips. As soon as he opened his mouth to tell me something in a sarcastic tone, no doubt, I flicked the tiny ball of paper right into his mouth. I made a note to thank my brother for the aim practice during our paper ball fights at home. I covered my mouth with my hand as the guffaws left, trying so hard to keep them muffled. I just made him eat paper. I laughed harder.
"Miss Eldridge, Mr. Smith, would like to share something with the rest of the class?" Mr. Forbes' voice was so close that it made me jump. With my hand still cupped over my mouth, I slowly turned to see him with raised eyebrows, standing right in front of me. I sunk down in my seat, arms crossed, face melting from the hot blush in my cheeks.
"No, sir." I said mechanically. Everyone in class was looking at Hunter and I. How embarrassing...
"Actually, Mr. Forbes," Hunter piped up, "she threw paper balls at me." I turned in my seat with my mouth hanging open. What a nark.
"Jasey, please see me after class." Me. Forbes said calmly before going back to the front of the class. I glared back at Hunter for a moment. He had a satisfied smirk on his face that I desperately wanted to slap off. I refrained from doing so and turned around in my seat slowly, ignoring the lingering curious looks from my classmates.
I was so going to beat this kid later.
When the bell rang, I was relieved at first. Then I realized I had to stay after class. After waiting for Hunter to scoot his butt out if the classroom, I followed behind him down the row until I reached the front desk where Me. Forbes was sitting. He was typing on his laptop like crazy.
"Uh, Mr. Forbes?" I tapped on his desk. He looked up and held his finger up for a second as if to tell me to wait a minute.
I kept my groan to myself so I wouldn't get in too much trouble and looked around the classroom. The walls were so boring. I don't understand why he couldn't put cool history posters up. History was my favorite subject when we weren't talking about government. For example, when we learned about the Hatfield's and McCoy's, I aced my test.
Call me a nerd, I'm used to it.
"Jasey, would you like to tell me why you were goofing off during class?" Mr. Forbes suddenly appeared right behind me. I had been standing in front of the door admiring a picture of legendary two families that started a feud over a pig.
"Uh, yes?" I said. That was the wrong answer.
"That's not an answer." He crossed his arms over his chest and let out a tired sigh.
Wringing my hands together, I stepped closer to his desk. I hated getting in trouble, and it was Hunter's fault.
"Right. Um, I don't know. He-" I stopped myself from telling Mr. Forbes that he started it. "I threw a piece of paper behind me and it hit Hunter, that's all." I played it off cooly.
He raised his eyebrows at me and let his arms drop to his sides. "You're free to go." He said after about three minutes. "Don't let it happen again. I didn't expect that out of you."
Nodding my head, I backed out of the room and shut the door behind me.
I almost screamed when Hunter appeared out of no where. Glaring at him, I turned the opposite way so I could grab my things before Lilly and Reese decide to leave without me.
Oh no.
With the thought of being stranded at the school all night, I sprinted down the empty hallway to my locker. I opened my locker with lightning speed and grabbed my things before buttoning my jacket up and throwing my backpack over my shoulders.
As soon as I went to turn and run out the door, I ran straight into someone.
My face burned from embarrassment as I stumbled to keep my balance. A hand caught my elbow before I completely fell. With a grateful smile, I looked up into the eyes of the devil himself. Yes, anyone who gets me in trouble at school is who I refer to as a devil.
Disgusted, I jerked my arm out of his grasp. He didn't seem to mind. "What do you want, Butt-head?" My eyes narrowed and I saw my bandana sticking out of his front pocket. Now was my chance to get it back.
I reached forward and tried to snatch it away, but he grabbed it before I could and put it in his back pocket.
"Just wondering if you need a ride, Beavis." He answered cooly, leaning against the locker, hand wrapped around my bandana.
Ignoring his nickname, "No thanks, I have my own ride." I barely got my sentence out before my phone started to buzz in my pocket, making me squirm around until I got it out. Pressing answer, I held it to my ear, "Hello?"
"Jay? Hey, It's Danny. Kelly's gonna be a little late today and I was wondering if you could come in for a few hours? Just until six." Danny told me with an almost pleading tone.
"Yeah, sure. I'm on my way now. Bye." I hung up with my boss and dialed my brother's number quickly to make sure him and Lilly were still outside waiting for me.
"Hello?" A different male's voice answered the phone. I raised an eyebrow, completely aware of the evil brown eyes staring down at me.
"Uh, Reese?" I asked hopefully. There was a hardy laugh from the other side of the phone but I couldn't tell who it was for the static in the phone.
"Jasey, did you get the wrong number?" Grant's familiar voice asked me. I'm sure my face lit up at the sound of his voice. I hadn't heard it in forever and this was a surprise. He was only allowed to use his cell phone on weekends. I didn't have much time to ask him why he had it, so I cut to the chase.
"Grant! I miss you!" I squealed into the phone. When it came to my older brother, I was like puddy in his hands. Since Grant has been away for about two years for the Army, I was always so happy when we got to talk to him or Skype him.
"I miss you too, sis. How have you guys been? Dad and Amanda?" His tone was more of a suggested one at the end. What was he suggesting about dad and Amanda?
"Good! Hey, listen. I gotta go cause I kinda need to go to work for a little while." I told him quickly.
"Okay, love you and talk to you later." He told me.
"I love you too. Can't wait to see you soon!" With that, I hung up the phone and shoved it in my pocket. Hunter's face went from a smirk to a slight frown from the last time I looked up at him.
"You have a boyfriend?" He asked me as we walked down the hall towards the door. I could just see if they were out here in the car waiting for me...
"He's my- uh, yes. My boyfriend that lives in... Greenbrier." I lied smoothly. He seemed to believe it since his frown was full on now. I felt myself smile a little that I made him jealous.
My eyes roamed the parking lot to find it empty except for a few cars including the dark blue Camaro sitting in the lot. Jerking my phone out if my pocket angrily, I dialed the right number this time so I could yell at Reese.
"Yeah?" He answered.
"Where are you guys?" I growled into the phone, clutching it tighter.
"We're at the diner. Where are you?" He asked me as if I didn't just yell at him.
"Reese! Why didn't you wait for me? I have to be at the diner now! Gosh, now I have to walk." I put my hand on my hip and scowled at the ground. My brother was my main problem in life.
"I'm sorry, Jay! I didn't know." He said. Then he laughed at something someone else mumbled in the background. I realized what he was doing.
"Did you take your friends to the diner and leave me here? What about Lilly?" I said into the phone, clearly frustrated. Hunter stood quietly beside me and when I glanced up at him without him noticing, he was staring at the ground, face emotionless.
"Hey, Jasey!" Lilly yelled happily into the phone which only made me more mad. How could they do that to me?
Too angry to speak, I ended the call and shoved my phone back into my pocket with force. I almost had to pull my pants back up from me pushing them down.
Crossing my arms, I started to walk down the snowy steps and onto the paved road until I got to the sidewalk. It's way too cold for this anymore. I thought I could handle it the last couple of nights but it's freezing today.
"Hey, Jasey! Need a ride?" I heard Hunter call out to me. I stopped walking and hung my head down to think. I stared at my red cowboy boots that came up over my skinny jeans.
I turned around to look at Hunter and I started to walk backwards, away from him.
"No thanks, Butt-head!" I called out to him with a real smile on my face. I saw him grin and look down, looking back up through his lashes.
"See ya later, then, Beavis." He called back. His stupid name for me reminded me of the TV show called Beavis and Butt-head.
"Hey, I'm gonna need that Bandana back!" I yelled at him as he used his remote to unlock his fancy car.
"Yeah, not happening!" He said with a chuckle. I glared daggers at the back of his head and turned around swiftly, only to fall on my butt in front of the new bad boy.
