Thirteen
Steve bounded out of the portal and landed on the ground with a thud. He groaned and tried to get up when he felt a very heavy person drop onto him.
"Dare, get off of me." Steve muttered. He tried to push Dare off of him but he was just too heavy. Luckily he rolled off and landed beside Steve.
They heard another woosh of the portal opening up and Casey flew on top of both of them. She complained about the portal and then pushed herself off of them.
"Well THAT was graceful." Dare said sarcastically. He sat up off the ground and adjusted his backpack. Casey did the same and eventually Steve did as well. Casey looked up at the sky with a look of concern.
"It's going to be dark soon. How far away are we from your house?" She asked.
"We have to go to the town first. Then we can figure it out. But the thing is, we also have to find the town." Steve said grimly.
"It's right over there," Dare said pointing,"all the houses and lights and stuff." Steve started walking that way. It wasn't too far of a walk and they made it to the entrance in just a matter of minutes.
They walked into town and found a bench to sit on. Casey and Steve sat down while Dare was standing behind them and peering over their heads to see what was going on. Steve pulled out a map and unfolded it on his lap.
"Okay, so we are here," he pointed to a spot,"and my house is here. So we will need to go...that way." He said and pointed to the west of them.
"How long will it take? It's already seven or seven thirty. We could talk the mobs down but you know how rebellious creepers are." Dare muttered the last part in irritation.
"It should take about half an hour, so we should make it there before the sun sets." Steve assured. Casey jumped up from the seat and swung her backpack over her shoulders.
"Then what are we waiting for?" She asked, "let's go!" Casey basically skipped through town while Dare and Steve were trying to catch up with her.
"Casey! Slow down!" Dare begged. She stopped and turned around waiting for them. When Steve and Dare finally caught up Dare leaned over panting heavily while Steve was on his knees.
"I thought you guys were supposed to be in shape." Casey smirked down at them.
"It's...it's hard in this human body. I absolutely hate it. I have more energy in Ender form and don't have these fat clumpy legs." Dare recovered a bit and stood up. Steve looked down at his own legs a bit self conscious before looking over at Dare. He still towered over everyone else.
"Why are you so tall?" Steve asked.
"When I first shifted into human, my body reacted differently than everyone else and some of my Ender DNA mixed in with it and I grew. But it won't affect your brother, if that's what your worried about." Dare said, messing with his arm. Casey looked between the two of them before turning around and continuing on the original quest. Steve and Dare stood next to her and trudged away from the town.
"I can't wait to see Alex and Notch. Hopefully they weren't too worried." Steve whispered anxiously.
Dare stopped suddenly and a look of horror spread across his face. "Um...they might've been a bit worried." Steve turned to Dare and looked at him in confusion.
"Why would they have been really worried?" Steve asked.
Dare rubbed the back of his neck and laughed sheepishly. "When you were shot by me with an arrow," Dare glanced over at Casey who's eyes were wide but he waved her away,"there may have been a blood splatter on the ground when you fell over." Steve stared at Dare for a couple of moments before turning around and continuing to walk to his house.
"Cmon it's going to get dark soon." Steve said. Casey glanced at Dare before following Steve. Dare let out a heavy sigh and jogged over to them. They all walked in silence as the sun kept getting lower and lower in the sky. Steve felt so anxious to see his family after being in the end for so long. He also missed the Overworld as he could at least tell when it was night or day.
Steve took a quick glance at Dare to see him sweating and fidgeting. "What's wrong?" Steve asked. Dare looked down at him and tried to hide his worry.
"Nothing," Dare gulped,"nothing at all," he whispered. Dare looked off into the distance while still walking. Steve knew something was wrong by Dare's body language. He was sweating, breathing heavily, but he had an odd mix of sadness and anxiousness. Steve wanted so badly to find out what was wrong but knew that Dare wouldn't tell him.
Steve walked in the middle trying to calm his mind down. Would they be happy to see him? Angry that he didn't contact them sooner? What will they think of Casey and Dare? He started to become anxious just like Dare but his was probably for a different reason.
Steve turned to see Casey completely calm and normal. "Aren't you a little nervous? Just a little?" Casey looked over at Steve with her eyebrows raised and a smirk planted on her face.
"I've been on so many undercover missions that it's just a normal thing to me." Steve couldn't help but admire her. Casey was in her early twenties and was already a top notch spy.
"Is that why you stay human most of the time? Because you go on so many missions?" Steve asked.
Casey shrugged. "Partly. I just like being human, really. I'm not a fan of my Ender form and I really like the human form. Same goes for Queen Elaine too. She likes being in hybrid form because it's easier to move around and she looks gorgeous as a human." A small smile appeared on Steve's face and he looked out of the corner of his eye to see what Dare's reaction was.
"She's gorgeous in her dragon form, too." Dare muttered. It was so quiet that Steve had to make sure that's what he actually said. When he figured out that's what he really said, Steve started to feel jumpy and excited for Dare.
"Why don't you ever go on undercover missions here on the Overworld?" Casey asked to Dare,"You would probably be one of the best spies for the End." Dare's expression went to shock then slowly into depression.
"I used to go on missions. But..." Dare paused and seemed to be having trouble saying the next word,"but...Herobrine got the best of me. And I haven't been able to do it since."
"What exactly did Herobrine do? Was it when he damaged your eye?" Steve asked. Dare solemnly shook his head.
"But I wish that was the reason..." Dare whispered. Steve knew that whatever his brother did to Dare wasn't something Dare could talk about. Steve felt bad for his Ender friend and was silently cursing Herobrine.
Steve cut across to Dare and gave him a pat on the back. Steve didn't really know what else to do but this felt right. Dare looked down at Steve with a reassuring smile and Steve gave one right back.
"Shouldn't we be there already?" Casey complained. Steve stopped in his tracks and looked around at where they were at. Steve dropped his backpack and pulled out a map. He examined the map and then let out a frustrated groan when he figured out where they were at.
"We went the opposite direction. We were supposed to go East but instead went West." Casey slapped the back of Steve's head causing him to bump into Dare.
"So now we have to sleep out here. With all of the mobs." Casey sat down and leaned against the trunk of a tree. "And we are in human form so they won't recognize us. This is great." Casey's sarcasm irritated Steve so much that he stuck his tongue out at her.
"Stick that tongue out at me again and I will rip it out and slap you with it." She warned. Steve smiled evilly and stuck his tongue out at her again. Then his smile went to a scream when Casey jumped at him. Steve covered his face and waited for the pain of Casey trying to rip his tongue out but looked up when it didn't come.
Dare was holding a very angry Casey who was clawing and trying to push away from him so she could hurt a very scared Steve. But luckily Dare had a strong grip on her and she couldn't escape.
"Steve," Dare struggled with Casey,"apologize. Now."
"Why? She was the one who tried to rip my tongue out!" Steve complained. Dare's intense gaze hardened and Steve knew he was serious.
"Casey, I'm sorry that I stuck my tongue out at you." Steve muttered.
"Now, Casey, what do you want to say to Steve?" Dare asked obviously hinting for her to apologize.
"Oh I'll show you sorry," Casey growled. Dare sighed warily and shook his head.
"No, tell him you are sorry." Dare said sternly. Casey muttered a 'Never' and Dare sighed once again.
"Do it or I'll take away your knives." Dare warned. Casey gasped and looked at him with fear in her eyes. "You wouldn't."
Dare smiled with a sparkle in his eyes. "Try me." Casey groaned and cursed under her breath until she decided to apologize.
"Fine. Steve, I'm sorry that you're a d-"
"Casey." Dare interjected.
"-delightful person and that I am sorry I tried to rip your delightful tongue out of your delightful mouth." She would hitch her voice every time she said 'delightful' and forced a smile on her face.
"Okay, now you two better get along because, I hate to say it, but we are going to have to spend the night in a tree." Dare pointed to a large tree off to his left that could be hollowed out to fit all of them. Dare walked over to the tree and started climbing it. Then he broke some of the branches and leaves and crawled up into it making it seem like he disappeared. After a few moments his head appeared down from the tree.
"Climb on up! It's not much but it's something." Dare went back up into the tree. Steve gave Casey an uneasy look. But when he heard the rattle of skeleton bones he zipped into the tree with Casey following. Steve came in panting with wide eyes when Casey climbed up and replaced the missing block they came through with a wood block. They were all enveloped in darkness before Dare placed a torch down. He then turned to Steve who was still shaken up.
"What was that?" Dare asked. Steve glanced over at Dare before catching his breath.
"S-sorry. I just have a thing about skeletons. I was shot by one right before I was taken by Dare. And it hurt pretty badly." Steve said, the memory replaying in his head. He unconsciously rubbed his leg where the arrow hit.
"Wait, you were hit with an arrow before me? That son of a glitch." Dare gave Steve a lopsided smile and Steve chuckled.
"Yep and his hurt a whole lot more than yours did," Steve added. Dare had a shocked expression on his face before admitting defeat.
"Yeah but that's only because I had a healing and pain reducer potion on mine. Otherwise you would've screamed so loud at the arrow that could've easily went through you." Dare said casually. Casey's mouth hung open as he said that.
"Wait, you've made arrows go all the way through people before? I didn't even know that was possible!" Casey had her eyes wide open as if she just found out he was the king of minecraft or something.
"Sure have. But I stopped archery a few years ago when Herobrine had that phase of being dormant. But now he's back and I'm gonna have to train again." Dare sat back against the leaves of the tree and started fiddling with his fingers.
"Have you ever gotten a hit on Herobrine with arrows?" Steve asked. Dare looked up with his mouth open as if to say something but closed it and just shrugged.
"I guess. But I never really used a bow on him." Dare said. His answer left Steve confused and curious.
"Why didn't you use a bow?" Steve asked. Dare shrugged carelessly.
"His knows my tricks." Dare said quietly. Steve looked at him with a different view of him. It seemed that when he talked about Herobrine Dare always had a hint of sadness or regret in his voice. Steve knew this wasn't the time to ask about it so he would wait.
Casey coughed awkwardly to break the silence. "So...you think we're gonna meet Notch?" Casey asked.
"I'm sure you will. He's probably more worried than Alex, believe it or not. So I would expect to see a lot of him." Steve said then his eyes widened into concern. "Uh oh."
"What?" Casey and Dare asked in concern unison.
"After this, Notch and Alex may not leave me out of their sight." Steve mentally started to freak out. He had to meet the Ender dragon while Notch would be watching his every move. This mission just keeps getting harder and harder each step he takes.
"Oh well. We'll figure it out when the time comes. Right now I think we should be getting some sleep for tomorrow." Dare said with a yawn. He then laid down on his makeshift bed and fell asleep in almost an instant. Casey gave a tired smile before laying down and falling asleep. Steve watched his friends sleep peacefully as his head was spinning with thoughts. After a long while of no sleep, Steve eventually dozed off into a restless sleep.
Alex was sitting on her throne that Notch and Steve built for her. She had a paper crown that was colored yellow and had sparkles glued to it. Her bright fuzzy red hair poked out everywhere and her white dress that was made from a tablecloth wrapped around her. She sat giggling as her eldest brother marched back and forth with a wooden sword.
Then the evil two came out- The Twisted Twins. Brine smiled evilly with his dark blue cape flowing behind him. Steve chuckled darkly with his dark red cape wrapped around him. The capes were the only thing that could tell them apart.
"Halt," Notch commanded. His blonde hair was hidden underneath his helmet. Usually being the oldest, he would scare the two. But this time, they would finally capture the beautiful queen. Brine jumped at Notch to distract him while Steve ran past to get to the queen. All of the sudden, the ground gave way and he fell through. He could see all three of his siblings staring down the hole. Steve could feel himself getting closer and closer to the ground until...
"Ahhhh!" Steve screamed. He looked around frantically to see what was going on. Once his vision finally cleared and he calmed down a bit he looked around at where he was.
"Why am I on the ground?" Steve wondered out loud. He looked forward and saw the trunk of the tree and slowly brought his head up. He looked at the canopy in confusion. The part of the leaves where he was sleeping was gone. Like somebody broke the leaves and branches just to make him fall. As he was contemplating this Steve started to hear snickering behind him.
Steve turned quick enough to see Casey lying on the ground and laughing. He looked at her, then back at the tree and finally pieced it together. "You could've broken my neck!" He screamed at her. Steve got up and brushed himself off before stomping over to Casey.
"Oh wow. That was too good." Casey said in between her laughs. Steve just glared at the girl.
"Again, you could've broken my neck." Steve was outraged at this. He could've been really hurt and she thought this was a joke.
Casey found her way standing up and wiped some of the stray tears on her face. "I don't know if you realize this yet, but if I wanted to break your neck, it would be broken." She smiled sweetly at him before walking back to grab her bag.
Steve stared at her making sure she didn't have anything else up her sleeve. When he was satisfied that she didn't he walked over and grabbed his bag that must've fell out of the tree when he did.
"Where's Dare by the way?" Steve asked.
Casey shrugged carelessly and turned around to face him. "I think he went to go get some wood and some apples. Actually, he should be back by now." Casey looked around to see if she could spot Dare.
"Here." A voice said behind Steve making him jump at the sudden sound. Steve twisted around to see Dare slumping in place with a backpack.
"Let's go now and we can probably make it by lunch." Dare said and he took off towards the town. "And I have the map this time." He added. Steve felt his face turn red as Casey smirked over at him. They then started their journey they were supposed to accomplish yesterday.
"Are you sure we're going the right way?" Casey asked for the fourth time. Dare sighed in frustration.
"Yes I'm sure. Now shut up until we get there." Dare referred to the both of them.
"Well we are gonna have to be quiet for a long time." Steve muttered. Dare shot Steve a hard glare that could turn someone to stone. Steve just sneered over at him and Dare turned back around.
"We should be there by lunchtime," Casey mocked,"well it's three in the afternoon. I think you were a bit off." Steve knew this was like playing with fire but they were all irritated.
"Three can still be considered lunchtime." Dare argued. Steve decided to sit this one out and watch the two fight.
"Of course it is. I should tell them that we are poor and my daddy doesn't consider lunch until evening time." Casey pouted and batted her eyelashes. Steve knew this was getting really bad and that he should interject, but this was also becoming more entertaining.
"Tell them that. Tell them that I'm the only one who works in this family and you can't move your sorry-"
"Dare! Let's stop this before we get to the house. Besides, I think I'm starting to recognize some things." Steve tried to break up the two before they met his family. Dare mumbled some things about Casey being a brat and Casey mumbled something about Dare being an idiot.
They kept walking in silence as Steve looked around to find anything else that was familiar. As he was starting to get discouraged he felt a tap on his shoulder.
"Look!" Casey pointed in front of her. Steve squinted and saw the small outline of a wooden house. He gasped when he realized it was his.
"Okay, I know you guys sometimes have trouble getting along, but you have to act like you have a bonding father-daughter relationship. Then when it's all over you guys can go back to insulting each other." Steve assured them. He was a bit worried about them being hateful towards each other.
"Yeah, Caroline. You better be on your best behavior or you're going to get grounded." Dare teased. Steve knew it was too late when he saw the daggers in her eyes. All of the sudden she grabbed the collar of his shirt and pulled him down where they were face to face.
"My name is Casey, not Caroline. Learn it now or I will make sure you learn it later. And my teaching methods can be quite questionable, just ask any person who's gotten on my bad side. Now act like my loving father, even though you have no love for me whatsoever, and I will act like your loving daughter. Just remember, my name is Casey." She shoved Dare backwards and let go of his collar, making sure he stumbled. He had a look of pure terror on his face knowing that she was meaning business.
"Come now Father, we have to show our love to another family." Casey mocked. Steve swore he could see literal fire in her eyes as she turned around. "Ready?" She asked sweetly. Too shocked to say anything, Steve just nodded and followed her to the house.
They kept getting closer and closer to the house. Steve decided that he should be the first one to go through the door so he cut ahead of Casey. Steve felt more anxious than he'd ever been in his life and each step would make his heartbeat go faster. They finally made it to the walkway and Steve picked up his speed. He made it to the steps and took a deep breath before opening the door.
Steve smiled as he opened it but his happiness was replaced with confusion, worry, and plain anger.
"What the Nether is going on here?!"
