thirty nine
"He said he panicked and he doesn't know why." Jin said sighing. "He slept as soon as I tucked him in."
Excluding Hoseok and Lay, everyone else sat in the living room of the Kim residence in a gloomy atmosphere. All worried about how Soobin ended up in a park at night. Soobin hadn't said a word all the way till his house and even when they reached home he refused to talk. Seokjin took him up to his room assuming that he doesn't like the crowd that's gathered around him. But when Seokjin asked him what had happened, Soobin turned away from him saying he didn't know either. Seokjin tried to get more information out of his younger son but he couldn't because Soobin was already fast asleep. With a dejected sigh Seokjin walked back down to the living room to tell everyone that soobin's alright and sleeping peacefully.
"Chief, does your son have any sleeping habits?" Yoongi asked, making Namjoon and Seokjin frown. "Maybe he was sleep walking? And everything he did in his dream, he was unconsciously doing in real life as well?"
"You're seriously trying to say that one of my sons has a sleep disorder and I had no goddamn clue about it?!" Seokjin snapped raising an eyebrow at Namjoon's subordinate.
"Jinie, he could be right..." Namjoon took seokjin's hands in his to comfort him.
"No, Soobin does not have any sleeping habits. He's a heavy sleeper who barely even moves around the bed." Jungkook clarified. He has slept next to his brother for countless nights and never has he seen Soobin walking around in his sleep.
"It could have been developed recently, because of some sort of stress.." Taehyung said, looking at jungkook with a pointed look. He was refering to their past, which could be the reason of soobin's distress.
"No. Soobin doesn't remember his childhood." Jungkook firmly disagreed.
"But his subconscious does." Seokjin said, catching on to the couple's discreet discussion. Jungkook made eye contact with Seokjin, wanting him to deny it. He didn't want to see his baby brother in any pain. He didn't want to believe it.
"But the question is why now, after so many years? This reaction would've been more reasonable when we first told him about-" Seokjin abruptly stopped realising there were two complete strangers in this room who didn't know about jungkook and Soobin's childhood.
"Anyway! Soobin is back home and he's safe. That's more important." Namjoon quickly averted the attention of the audience. "You kids have school tomorrow and I'm sure your parents are worried about your whereabouts."
Yeonjun and Taehyung nodded. Taehyung saw yeonjun's expression and wanted to question him. His eyes held pain and uncertainty. His mouth opening and closing as if he wanted to say something but could not bring himself to say it. His tense shoulders and the frown on his forehead spoke a lot more words that his mouth didn't allow to escape. In that moment Taehyung realised a very important detail he had been neglecting. But before he could ask jungkook had already read his mind.
"Yeonjun, how do you know my brother?" Jungkook's face displayed confusion. He had been wondering why Soobin would call yeonjun, of all people.
Yeonjun's eyes widened and he bit his lip.
"I um, we've known each other ever since that day I helped him.." yeonjun said. "You remember? The day Soobin fainted in school and you came to pick him up with your dad? Yeah. We kind of exchanged numbers after that."
Yeonjun scratched the back of his neck. Taehyung frowned staring at his best friend, who was clearly lying.
"I shall drop them off." Yoongi said and Namjoon replied with a curt nod.
Namjoon and Seokjin bid them goodnight and went upstairs while jungkook followed his boyfriend out. Yoongi and Yeonjun went ahead to wait near Yoongi's car, giving the couple some privacy. Taehyung smiled brightly to cheer jungkook up and hugged him tight. Jungkook sighed, hugging his boyfriend and giving his neck a kiss.
"Don't worry too much Kookie.." Taehyung whispered into jungkook's ear.
Jungkook pulled away from the hug only to kiss Taehyung on the lips. Taehyung smiled as their lips mold together in a perfect rhythm. He felt jungkook's tense shoulders relax. Jungkook's hands around Taehyung's waist brought him closer to deepen the kiss. Taehyung let jungkook dominate him for a while before pulling away. They had to keep in mind two other people who were currently witnessing everything.
"I'll see you at school tomorrow." Jungkook kissed Taehyung's forehead.
"Make sure to get some rest hmm." Taehyung said brushing jungkook's bangs behind, exposing his forehead.
"I will. You take care too and text me when you reach home."
"I will." Taehyung nods and steps away from his boyfriend.
He walked to the car and climbed into the passenger seat which was empty for him. Yeonjun was in the back with his head in his hands. Yoongi had a blank expression and if Taehyung hadn't known him as well as he does now, then he would've surely thought that Yoongi was uncomfortable because of the kiss he just shared with jungkook. But Taehyung knew better, Yoongi wouldn't even be bothered if jungkook and Taehyung were doing more than kissing right in front of him.
As Taehyung waved at his boyfriend through the window Yoongi turned on the ignition and pulled out of his chief's driveway.
"I'm dropping him off first because he said he lived nearer." Yoongi informed.
"Yeonjun, is it okay if I stay with you tonight? I don't want to be alone." Taehyung asked his best friend who seemed to have snapped out of his thoughts.
"Of course Tae." Yeonjun gave a tight smile.
Taehyung gave Yoongi the directions to yeonjun's house and that's the most they talked. Yeonjun was still processing the event that occured this evening, having numerous questions for not only soobin but himself as well. Yoongi thought it would be best to ask Taehyung about the details in the absence of yeonjun, he also assumed that Taehyung himself wanted to interrogate his friend and that's why he requested to sleep over at his place tonight. That means the next time Taehyung and Yoongi meet, Yoongi will get to know every little detail which is any day better than half the knowledge.
They reached yeonjun's house soon enough and Yeonjun thanked the officer for dropping him off while Taehyung bid him goodnight with a promise to meet tomorrow. The two best friends walked inside the house after Taehyung messaged his dad and jungkook that he's staying over at yeonjun's. Yeonjun's parents welcomed Taehyung with warm smiles and hugs even though their eyes were filled with worry and relief, now that yeonjun is home.
Taehyung borrowed yeonjun's pajamas and changed his clothes in the bathroom after taking a hot relaxing shower. When he entered yeonjun's room, he found his best friend already changed in comfy clothes with two bowls of ramen sitting on his desk. Yeonjun smiled handing Taehyung the chopsticks. Taehyung grabbed the bowl and sat on yeonjun's bed as yeonjun sat on the desk chair slurping his noodles. Taehyung bit lip contemplating whether to ask yeonjun the questions he's been dying to ask or remain silent and let his best friend relax for some time. In the end, his curiosity got the best of him and he placed his bowl back on the desk.
"Yeonjun-ah."
"Hmm." Yeonjun looked up pushing the noodles down his throat.
"When jungkook asked you how you knew soobin.. why did you lie?" Taehyung asked cautiously. He took a note of how yeonjun's eyes widened for a second and he stopped eating altogether.
"What are you talking about?" Yeonjun asked giving an awkward smile, shuffling around in his seat to get more comfortable.
"That day, we weren't even at school. We went there because Soobin had called you.." Taehyung clarified. "What are you not telling me Jun?"
Yeonjun looked away from Taehyung setting his bowl of ramen on his desk too. He closed his eyes and took a deep breathe. He knew he would have to tell Taehyung the truth one day. Taehyung was his best friend after all, and most importantly he was now soobin's older brother's boyfriend.
"Soobin and I... were boyfriends." Taehyung gasped at this piece of information he had never imagined he'd hear from his best friend's mouth.
"Yeonjun..." Taehyung trailed off unable to come up with words to say.
"I had a crush on him for year before I found the courage to ask him out." Yeonjun smiled. The image of a totally confused, little rabbit looking human flashed in front of his eyes.
"We started dating in the beginning of this year and everything was going really well. It was so perfect that I thought it was permanent now. Nothing could come between us. I had the best summer vacation I could ever ask for. But.. then it was over." Yeonjun sighed. "Last day of summer, mom told me that they were going to send me off to Chicago for further studies..."
"You always wanted that.." Taehyung said softly. He saw the tears gather in his best friend's eyes and moved ahead to take yeonjun's hand into his soft warm ones.
"I did, yeah.. but that was before I started dating Soobin. And honestly, I had forgotten about leaving Korea." Yeonjun sniffled. "That night I sneaked into his house and.. and I told him. I told him I'd have to leave and he said that he'll come to me. We aren't over yet and he will find me no matter where I go. You can't imagine how happy I was after hearing those words. It was honestly the best time of my life, dating Soobin. But later when he realised how unrealistic his decision was, he broke up with me. God Taehyung, he cried so much... Kept saying he's sorry but, but it wasn't his fault was it? I can't blame him for being practically right?"
"It's not your fault either."
"It is. I hurt him. I made him break up with me because I kept pushing him away. I wanted to prepare him for the distance that we were about to face. I just... I just wish I wouldn't have pushed him away so much." Yeonjun hiccuped and Taehyung hugged him, closing his own eyes to stop the tears.
"What was I supposed to tell his parents? Their son is hurting because of me and I.. I can't do anything!"
"Stop it Jun. Stop blaming yourself." Taehyung grabbed his best friend's shoulders and shook him inorder to bring his brain back into its place.
"He needs me Tae. My Soobin needs me but he still pushes me away because I did the same to him." Yeonjun cried. "How could I? How could I do this to him? I had promised him that I'll never leave him and look, look what I did."
"Shh Junie it's not you fault.." taehyung brought yeonjun to his chest and cried along with his best friend.
He couldn't believe how blind he had been all this time. While he was crying about his problems to yeonjun, he had completely ignored the fact that yeonjun might also have some problems of his own and would also need to vent them out. He couldn't believe how selfish he had been, for always using yeonjun for comfort and never doing the same for him, barely ever offering comfort to him. He couldn't remember the last time he had hugged yeonjun to assure him that everything is okay. He couldn't remember the last time yeonjun had cried in his arms. He couldn't even remember asking yeonjun how he was or if everything was okay in his life. How could he always assume that yeonjun was alright? Why did he always assume that yeonjun was alright? What kind of a best friend was he?!
Taehyung sobbed along with yeonjun, trying his best to comfort him. Something he should've done for yeonjun right from the beginning. But now he vowed to himself, this time it's all about yeonjun. And he's going to do everything he can to make sure yeonjun's alright and doesn't feel left out in any way. Taehyung will stand beside him, support him, comfort him. And be there for him whenever he needed.
