forty three
Taehyung woke up feeling the light on his face. He blinked a few times to adjust his view and be able to completely open his eyes. The first thing he noticed is the window; he's sure he doesn't have french style floor to ceiling windows. Taehyung frowned sitting up, he noticed the ash grey comforter is also not his. Neither are the 1975 posters on the wall. He looked around blinking in confusion. This was not his room for sure. But then whose was it? And how did he get here? Taehyung wanted to panic because he was in an unfamiliar house but he seemed to feel relaxed by the soft sunlight pouring through the beautiful window. He could see the greenery of the backyard of whoever owned this house and it honestly did not feel menacing.
Taehyung pushed the comforter off his body attempting to get out of the fluffy bed but he stopped when the door to this room opened. His eyes almost bulged out of their sockets when jaebum entered the room. Jaebum also had the same expression since he hadn't expected Taehyung to wake up so soon.
"Please don't scream." Jaebum muttered taking a caution step towards his bed.
"How..." Taehyung blinked, his mind a mess of vivid scenes blurred by.. water?
"You almost drowned today and um when you fainted, I uh brought you to my house..." Jaebum explained briefly, scratching his nape wondering if he should tell Taehyung about the kiss or no.
"Oh."
Slowly the water cleared out of his head and he remembered what had happened by the pool involving jinyoung. Taehyung brought his hand up to his lips when the image of jaebum kissing him ever so softly popped in front of his eyes. It was then that he noticed the white oversized hoodie he's wearing, certainly belonging to the boy standing in front of him.
"Don't worry. I didn't.. I didn't see anything. My mom helped you change and, and I've been in the other room while you were here. I promise. I just, I just came to check on you because you had slight fever and mom's not home at the moment and she just messaged me to check on you and I was going to take your temperature and-"
Taehyung let out an involuntary laugh at how jaebum was rambling for no particular reason but covered his mouth to stop himself. It's cute seeing him so flustered after a long time. And if Taehyung's being honest then he could say that he did, in fact, miss jaebum.
Jaebum blushed pursing his lips and looking elsewhere.
"Come here." Taehyung patted the space in front of him, folding his legs to make room for jaebum.
Jaebum sighed walking up to his bed and sitting down where Taehyung had gestured him to sit.
"How are you feeling?" Jaebum asked.
"Fine. Just my throat hurts."
"Probably because of the chlorine water." Jaebum said. He brought his hand up pushing Taehyung's bangs behind and placing his hand on Taehyung's forehead.
"You don't have a fever. Thank god. But you should still rest." Jaebum smiled compelling Taehyung to smile as well and nod.
"Your dad will come pick you up at seven when his shift gets over." Jaebum informed beginning to feel awkward. "I'll be in the other room so if you need anything just yell for me."
The tall boy went to get up to leave the room and give Taehyung his privacy, only to be stopped by the blondie. Taehyung caught jaebum's arm looking at him with wet eyes.
"Thank you jaebum, for saving me." He whispered.
"You don't need to thank me. I'll do it again in a heartbeat, any day."
"About the kiss, I-"
"Let's not talk about it Taehyung." Jaebum stopped him before he could even complete his sentence.
"But-"
"Please Taehyung." Jaebum removed his hand out of Taehyung's grip looking away.
"Jaebum I don't-"
"I know. I'm not getting my hopes up. I understand... you didn't know what was going on. And anyway, I kissed you, but you didn't kiss me back." Jaebum said dismissively. "Also, what were you doing there? What happened?"
Taehyung physically moved back when jaebum asked him what had happened there by the pool. He didn't have an answer. The one he had was not to be disclosed. Hence why he was mum.
"Are you a member of the swim zone?" Jaebum asked again waiting for an answer.
"No, I.. I just needed some alone time. And I-I slipped when I was walking. Yeah.. that's what happened." Taehyung shrugged with a smile at the end.
"Hmm.." jaebum sighed. "Rest now. You need it."
"Your room is really beautiful by the way." Taehyung smiled, his eyes lighting up. "Especially those windows!"
"How did you know this is my room?" Jaebum frowned making Taehyung giggle.
"1975." Taehyung pointed at the poster behind jaebum, laughing at the look of realisation on the tall boy's face.
"I mean, it could have been a guest room.." jaebum shrugged, meaning to assert the sentence as a question but could not achieve it.
"Who has a boy band poster in a guest room jaebum-ah!" Taehyung laughed slapping jaebum's shoulder. "And as if I can't see the big J on your door!"
"Right.. okay. You win." Jaebum chuckled along with the blondie. It was contagious, Taehyung's laughter. Looking at him laughing and smiling so beautifully, makes jaebum believe that God really did take time to create his masterpiece.
"Hey, are you hungry?" Jaebum asked, realising that Taehyung had missed lunch as he was knocked out for the entire afternoon.
Taehyung's stomach growled answering jaebum's question and making Taehyung blush. Jaebum got up from his seat saying that he'll prepare soup because right now eating solid food can irritate Taehyung's throat. Taehyung agreed, telling jaebum that he'll come to the kitchen after he checks his phone. Once jaebum left, Taehyung reached for his bag that he noticed was kept below the bed. He took out his phone, unlocking it and immediately being attacked by his notification bar going crazy with jungkook's messages.
"Oh shoot.." Taehyung muttered, clicking the call icon not wasting time reading his messages.
"Tae! Oh my god baby where are you!" Jungkook's voice rang in his ear. "How could you just leave me with one text and not answer any of my calls! Goddamn! Do you know how worried I've been!?"
"Sorry! I'm so so sorry!" Taehyung apologized not even bothering to ask him about the text that he had apparently sent.
"Gosh babe don't ever do that.. please." Jungkook's voice was more breathy now. As if he just let out a breath he had been holding.
don't ever do that to me..
Taehyung heard jaebum's voice in his head and gasped.
"Tae? Are you alright babe? Do you want me to come to your house?" Taehyung's eyes widened at that.
"Don't worry Kookie, I'm alright. I'm just going to spend some time with my dad tonight. Sorry." Taehyung came up with an excuse to decline jungkook's suggestion politely.
"It's okay... Just, just take care of yourself.. and please.. please don't ignore me again.. I understand your head must be hurting a lot but I really was worried sick about you."
"I'm so sorry koo, I didn't mean to ignore you. I just- I just took some tablets and fell asleep..."
"It's okay.. as long as you're alright.. don't come to school tomorrow if you still feel feverish okay baby? I'll come over as soon as school's done."
Taehyung smiled. His heart warming at jungkook's care and love.
"I'm coming to school tomorrow Kookie." Taehyung giggled softly, hearing a sigh on the other end.
"Tae-"
"Shush. I'll see you tomorrow." Taehyung said sternly yet adding a 'muahh' at the end.
"Okay, okay. See you tomorrow. Take care Tae."
"I will.. bye.."
"Bye baby.."
Jungkook hung up and Taehyung just stared at his phone screen for a few seconds. His phone displaying the text screen. He scrolled up to the message that Jungkook claimed he sent and read it.
I'm going home early, feeling feverish. Don't worry.
Sent. 12:30pm.
Taehyung sighed, locking his phone and keeping it in his bag again. He got out of the bed, noticing what he's wearing for the first time. He had black basket ball shorts on which exposed his honey tan legs, their size made him think that these were jaebum's childhood shorts. Taehyung blushed wondering how far jaebum's mother had seen his body. He shook his head getting rid of that thought. Just then, his nose was filled with a delicious aroma. He followed that aroma, going out of the room and into a hallway that lead to a staircase upwards. A little further from the oakwood staircase was an open door which, according to Taehyung, was the source of this tasty aroma. He blindly went inside the kitchen loving the lavish interior.
His eyes landed on jaebum who was stirring something in a pot. Taehyung knocked on the door gaining jaebum's attention.
"Oh. I was about to call you. I made sweet corn soup, hopefully it'll help your throat. And it also has a pretty thick consistency, so it should keep your stomach full."
"Thanks jaebum-ah." Taehyung took a seat at one of the chairs watching jaebum pour the hot soup in a blue bowl.
"You... messaged jungkook, didn't you?" Taehyung asked, looking straight at jaebum.
"I'm sorry." Jaebum paused. "I just thought he should be informed."
"Don't apologize, I'm not mad at you. But, why didn't you tell him I'm with you?"
Jaebum sighed, placing the bowl in front of Taehyung.
"I've seen how he reacts to jimin and I just.. I thought, there shouldn't be a problem between you two because of me.. you know?"
"Oh... But jaebum, I don't like hiding things from jungkook and.. and I'm going to tell him what actually happened when I meet him tomorrow.."
"That's fine by me! Honestly! I wouldn't want you to lie to him either. I just.. I don't know why I messaged him.. I'm so sorry Taehyung."
"I told you there's no need for you to apologize jaebum. Stop it now." Taehyung glared at jaebum resulting in jaebum biting his tongue and nodding.
Taehyung took a spoonful of the soup and blew at it a little before bringing it into his mouth. Jaebum watched him quietly, trying not to focus on the blondie's lips or else he'd be in way too much trouble. But his efforts proved fruitless when he found his eyes stuck on the cherry red Cupid's bow above which Taehyung's tongue had swiped a second ago. He stared at the pillow-y bottom lip, wondering how it would feel to bite on that lip with his teeth and pull ever so gently. How it would feel to have his tongue collide with Taehyung's.
Taehyung looked up when he felt jaebum's stare on him lingering for a tad too long and when they made eye contact jaebum averted his gaze, embarrassed by his inappropriate thoughts. Taehyung sighed, looking back at his half empty bowl. He kept the spoon down, deciding it was time to go home. On his own.
"I feel better now so, I'll just leave." Taehyung gave a tight smile. "Thanks for the soup it was really yummy."
Taehyung got up from his chair, had almost reached the kitchen door but jaebum just had to stop him.
"Tae.." jaebum's voice stopped Taehyung dead in his track. "You didn't finish the soup."
"I-I'm full already.." Taehyung said without turning around. He heard footsteps behind him indicating that jaebum's approaching him.
Taehyung jumped when he felt jaebum's arms wrap around his waist pulling him closer. Jaebum's head touching the side of Taehyung's face.
"Jaebum." Taehyung tried to ward him off but his voice cracked.
"Let me hug you... Please, just let me hug you.. one last time Tae.." jaebum tightened his grip bringing Taehyung impossibly closer to him. Taehyung's back flush against jaebum's front.
"You're so close to me. So damn close to me, yet, so fucking far.." jaebum whispered into Taehyung's ear making the short boy to shudder.
"J-jaebum. Stop." Taehyung stuttered breathing heavily. His heart was beating rapidly in his chest, in fear of what jaebum would do next. He wanted to resist. But the guilt inside of him for breaking jaebum's heart did not allow him to push jaebum away.
But before he could force himself to push jaebum away, he felt the grip on him disappear completely. Taehyung didn't think twice after that. He ran straight to the room where he left his bag, collected it and made his way to the front door. He paused before opening the door, almost turning around to see if jaebum was following him. But he didn't. Jaebum stood still, like a statue, in the kitchen. He'd cry after Taehyung would leave, not when he's in the house and could be able to hear jaebum's cries clearly. Taehyung's heart already weighed enough with unnecessary guilt, jaebum knew that and did not wish to add more to it. Thus, when the front door clicked shut confirming Taehyung's departure, jaebum crumbled to the floor sobbing to his heart's content.
