Prologue.
Nyah Pineda was jealous.
There was no use denying it anymore because she'd done enough of that in the past two years since she'd turned 11.
Now, it was finally time to acknowledge it and face it head on like a real Alpha.
Yes, she was the second born, but with her older brother having come out as gay two weeks ago and having been kicked out of the Pack for that "mortal sin" — cue the eye-roll, because even if she'd never seen homosexual fated mates in her Pack, she was pretty sure they existed — thus, making unable to accept the title, the responsibility had automatically fallen on her young shoulders too soon than she wanted it to.
Indeed, she hadn't accepted the title yet, her Father was alive and well, thanks to the Goddess, but she knew it was looming over her head like a dark cloud, with a pesky 5-year gap between the two of them. She was born as a surprise 5 years after her brother was born and she knew that her parents were too stubborn to let her accept the title when she felt ready — which would be never, in her honest opinion — so she had been put under the obligation to accept it as soon as she would turn eighteen in 5 years.
Just the thought gave her a sour stomach.
That had two reasons to do with it.
Her moron of a Beta, who had made it his mission in life to let her know that he wasn't stepping down with the passing of the title, because he apparently wasn't "too old", and also made it damn clear that he thought she was unfit to become the Alpha, because she was "second-born" and the Goddess made her be born the second for a reason, a reason that clearly indicated to him that she wasn't meant to be what had been thrusted upon her.
And secondly, it was because she secretly agreed with the latter part of his claim, though she would never admit it to him or show a damn sign of weakness, always pretending to be something she was not by smart-mouthing him and pissing him off even further.
Coming back to the present, where she was attending an Alpha meeting with her Dad and the moron, she was shocked to register that the feeling of jealousy was churning so thick in her stomach, she felt like it could make her hurl any moment.
She was that jealous.
At what, or whom, you may ask?
Of course, at Seneca fücking Mordecai and her cute as fück Beta.
No, she wasn't jealous because she thought the two had a thing going on, she would be a complete ass if she thought so, because the two had such a sibling vibe coming off them that not even a blind person will miss it, but she was jealous because she had such an amazing Beta who understood her thoughts before she finished thinking them and helped her train into the Alpha she would become too, in the coming future.
Yes, All three of them were the same age.
But unlike her obligations, Seneca's father most likely wasn't putting her in a pedestal too high for her, or wasn't forcing her to accept the title before what even humans considered underage to drink.
Looking at the duo silently talking and trailing behind Alpha Mordecai, with an ease that spoke of a familiarity of knowing each other forever, she was spiked hard with yet another bout of jealousy when the redhead threw her head back in laughter and punched her future Beta on the arm, to which he growled and charged at her, earning a sharp look from their Alpha.
Nyah couldn't help but giggle, despite being almost green with an ugly emotion wrapping tight around her throat, making it almost too difficult to breathe.
At the sound of her low giggle, the two well-trained Alpha and Beta wolves turned to meet her gaze with a curious one of their own, making her feel heat rise to her cheeks, most probably coloring it a deep shade of red under their bemused perusal.
She thanked her Mexican heritage for her naturally tan skin, hoping like hell the color was enough to disguise the blush painting her cheeks and making it too faint for them to notice from that far.
Who was she kidding? They had Alpha and Beta blood in them, and given the Pack's reputation for having only purebred high ranked wolves, they were probably more powerful than anyone in the room, with the exception of their own Alpha and his Beta, who was taking the rear, and following the two mischievous younglings.
She noticed a small frown marring the forehead of the Beta as he gave her another once-over, and then he shot her a nasty look that stung deep for reasons unknown to her, making her feel dumb for even thinking that those pompous kids would ever consider someone like her their friend, someone who wasn't a real Alpha, someone who was just a fill-in.
He turned and whispered something too low for her ears to his friend and she shot him an almost admonishing look, giving Nyah an apologetic almost smile, taking a step forward in her direction when another black haired cutie joined the two, distracting her as he threw his arms around them in a bear hug, making them laugh as they hugged him back with just as much fierceness, and Nyah felt like an outsider once again, realizing with a jolt that the guy was a to-be-Alpha too.
It was Daemon Kyler.
Both Seneca's and Daemon's fathers' Packs were too big and too powerful than her own father's — of course, she was not ashamed of her pack, she loved every single member of their little community — it's just that their power and reputations made them look too regal and made approaching them all the more daunting, almost like how a nerd would feel, trying to become friends with the popular kids in school.
With her being one of those 'populars' in her own school, this ugly feeling, the feeling of not being able to do what she was dying to do, almost made her feel sorry that the hierarchy system ever existed, making her wish for a split second that all this bullshit never had to prevail, and that everyone were equals in this world.
And then she shoved away that thought with a kick to its butt.
No, she could not think that way, because it was not in her nature to think that way. She was an Alpha, and she would damn well start thinking that way whether she liked it or not.
With that final resolve tightening her spine, she spun on her heel and turned her back to the duo that has now grown into a trio, facing her Dad and the moron, and almost immediately regretted the decision.
Crap, the moron was telling her Dad about the training.
Um, was there a bathroom anywhere close-by where she could go hide?
Just as she inched a step towards the unmarked door in the end of the room, she heard her Dad's sharp call of her name, freezing her in her tracks, her entire body stiffening in high-alert.
"Nyah."
She looked down, too scared to look up and meet the disappointment and anger that she was sure would be in her father's eyes.
"Look up," He snapped, his anger seemingly having increased ten notches in the past second, "Alphas meet the eyes of the speaker without fear, not cower like a little girl."
I AM A LITTLE GIRL DAMMIT, her inner self, the self that had still not come into terms with the fact that she had to lead a Pack, screamed, making her feel even worse about herself. She tampered down that stupid voice with a vengeance, feeling like a cheat as she looked up instantly, seeing the exact emotions she'd wanted to avoid in her father's brown eyes, which at one point had looked warn and had resembled chocolates; but was now nothing remotely close to it, looking more menacing than ever.
Her father, Alpha Nicholas Pineda, was a looming man with his 6'4 frame and bulky exterior, with the same brown hair and brown eyes as her, but if a glare from him was making her quake in her boots, she didn't know how she was going to manage the job of meeting a hundred different opinions and remarks on her position, once she took over.
She was doomed in this task of being an Alpha.
"Yes, sir." She replied with a surprisingly steady baritone, swallowing against the urge to sit down right there to wrap her arms around her knees and shiver till her panic subsides.
"What's Beta Morrison telling me about you being very uncooperative in your training?" Her Dad asked her, and she wanted to punch moron Morrison for tattling to the Alpha about every little thing. She could feel the stupid smirk of the moron in the corner of her peripheral vision, his ugly face just making the expression seem all the more ridiculous looking.
He wasn't ugly per se, but to Nyah, he seemed like the most disgusting looking creature on the planet.
Pitiful, she knew.
"It's nothing to be worried about, father." She replied, her breath coming out in a shuddery whoosh. "Beta Morrison likes to exaggerate things is all. You know that I've not trained from childhood like the other heirs, I would be happy if you're a bit more accommodating of my newness to all this." She explained in a small voice, looking at her father with hopeful eyes as she regarded his disappointment deepen into harder lines in his forehead with every word that passed her lips.
Well, apparently that wasn't the right thing to say.
"Nyah Karyme Ramirez Pineda." Uh, oh. Not the full name, not the full name, please! "Excuses are not how an Alpha responds to a question asked to him or her," He says in a calm tone, and that just worsens her fear because she knew he would deal with this later, at a more private and appropriate setting, that this wasn't over.
Crap, crap, crap! Why did this happen to her!?
Just then, Alpha DeVega, to whose pack they'd come for the meeting, stood at the raised platform at the end of the hall and silenced the room with a clap, as he nodded once and requested everyone be seated so that he could start addressing the gathering.
Her Dad and moron lead them to their table, moving from their position close to a wall where they'd been waiting for the Alpha of the pack to make an appearance, and Nyah let her eyes wander around the pleasantly decorated room as she trailed behind them sullenly.
Just then, her eyes caught azure sky blue ones boring into Nyah's without an ounce of shame that he'd been caught staring, and she stared right back at the nosy Beta, whose name she hadn't heard properly, daring him to give her another dirty look.
"Ezra!" Seneca Mordecai called — not too loud, but loud enough for a person concentrating to listen — sending him a stern look as she grabbed his arm and dragged him along, and this "Ezra" broke their staring match with a roll of his eyes and followed her, making their way to the table int the front of the hall.
Damn, the guy had her hormones raging even with a roll of his eyes.
Too bad he was a jackass who would only mingle with his selected crowd.
She dismissed all thoughts of him from her mind as she took a seat, taking a heavy breath in as she decided to focus on every word said in the meeting, because she had to prove herself to her father, and the first step towards it seemed like emulating all these Alphas present in the room.
She would do it, she thought, she would become the Alpha her Dad would be proud of, and then she would get justice for her beloved brother.
Nothing would stop her from that.
