Alex was a normal teenager. He was 15, listened to 'emo' music, and was proudly part of the LGBTQ community. He lived in Rhode Island, which happened to be the smallest state in the United States. However, he was an orphan. His father had a heart attack on a tractor, which his step mom had blamed him for. His mother had died tragically in a car accident. It was late at night and the other care didn't have their headlights on. Luckily, Alex wasn't in the car. Because Alex was 14, he got to have a say with who he stayed with. He didn't have any more grandparents, and his three cousins were still in college. He had one aunt, but she wasn't in a safe spot to take care of him. His aunt and his cousins had also disassociated themselves from him after their brother and uncle, Alex's dad, had died.
School had just ended, which he was glad for. Even though he didn't live in the same area, the group home let him stay at the same school. The group home also let him go out to the mall or just go for a walk by himself. The mall was only a 10 minute walk, and it was in a safe part of the city. He had a phone, and he knew what to do if he ran into trouble. Alex was also the oldest there, which was another reason they trusted him so much.
There was a 14 year old named Lucas there, him and Alex had shared a room. Lucas and Alex had ended up being pretty good friends, they frequently went to the mall with each other and just overall spent a lot of time together. But it didn't compare to the amount of time Alex spent with his two best friends, Olivia and Gabby. They often went to the mall, our spent time in the field area by the mall. Again, the mall was in a nice part of the city. Right across the street there were often food trucks, and a big grassy area were people usually laid down on a blanket or threw a frisbee. So Alex, Olivia, and Gabby often spent a lot of time there to, just spending time together. It wasn't often were Alex was allowed back to one of his friends houses, but when he was, they had an absolute blast. His friend Olivia had a pool and a wii, and his friend Gabby lived on a lake and had a boat. He had gotten used to living at the group home, and he came to like it. He liked having his options, and he liked having his routine.
Although Lucas was 14, he was gay. The people who ran the group home knew, they were very accepting. Alex himself was pansexual, and his friend Gabby was bisexual.
Today he was at the mall with Lucas, the day before he had gone to the food trucks with Gabby and Olivia.
"Dude I'm hungry!" Lucas whined, looking at his friends. Alex mocked him in a high pitched voice, fitting his wallet back into his pocket.
"That's why were headed to the food court now. I'm gonna get tai again, what about you?" He looked up at the other, looking anxious. Alex was only 5'1, while Lucas was already around 5'4.
"I'll get tai to... The sushi here isn't that great." Alex smiled as he walked, fixing his hold on his bag.
"Yeah... I always forget how bad it is, and then I order it and never finish it. You know what would be awesome? Some Italian store." Lucas snorted.
"You will ALWAYS go for Italian food!"
"Yeah no shit! It's fucking amazing!" He laughed softly, getting in line. The two always got the same thing when they got tai. A shrimp pad tai and a chicken pad tai, Alex getting the shrimp and Lucas getting the chicken. Both teens pulled out their phones, doing their own thing as they waited in line. Per usual, Lucas ordered for them and Alex paid. Once they got their food they somehow managed to find a table and sat down, opening up the to-go boxes and digging in.
"Ya know- I heard that a couple is coming in today." Lucas looked over at Alex, who just scoffed and rolled his eyes.
"Mhm."
"I'm serious! I heard Miss Linda talking about how they were thinking about you." Miss Linda was a sweet older lady, she helped run the troupe home. Everyone respected Miss Linda. Alex just laughed and stuffed a shrimp in his mouth.
"Yeah right. It's probably for you, not me." Lucas rolled his eyes and huffed.
"These ears never lie!" Alex just laughed and shook his head.
"Your a idiot." He chuckled softly, going back to eating.

After about 30 minutes of eating and about a 10 minute walk, they were back at the group home. Everything looked nice, like it did when a couple came in. The two friends walked inside, and walked straight to their room. Alex went to his bed and smiled, dumping everything onto the mattress. He snickered and looked at everything he had bought happily. He helped out at a local pet store, the same pet store were he kept his pet snake, Melvin. The teen had bought a Panic! at the Disco hoodie and a My Chemical Romance tee, a pair of The Office socks, black denim shorts, a rainbow belt and a bracelet that had, in Morse code, 'fuck you.' Lucas smiled and took everything out of his bag, he had gotten just a hoodie and a hat. The two started to put their things away, talking about different things they saw and just about random things. Alex yawned softly and climbed onto his bed, plugging in his phone and clicking onto Instagram. Lucas put on a different shirt and plopped onto his bed, pulling out a book.
"Emma!" The two looked up from what they were doing, looking at their door. Alex sighed and slowly stood up.
"Good luck." Lucas smiled softly. Alex returned the small smile and opened the door. He put his hands in his pockets and walked down the hall to were Miss Linda was.
"Hi hon... There's a couple here to see you." Alex tensed and nodded slowly, a little confused.
"For real this time?" The lady only nodded and turned, starting to walk. Miss Linda had met Alex at the end of the hallway, so they still had a little ways to go before they were at the point were he could meet this supposed couple who were interested in either adopting or fostering him.
Once they got there, Miss Linda stopped and looked at the couple, then the teen.
"And this is Emma!" Alex looked up- Holy shit.
