Cecil's P.O.V
Jeremy stared at the diner's entrance long after Grace had disappeared out the door. For a moment, he looked as though he would pursue her, but then his shoulders slumped and an exasperated sigh rushed from his mouth. His frame reflected that of a broken man - a demeanor I've never had the courtesy to see before. I considered comforting him. Perhaps this situation could work out in my favor...
But before I could even stand, he turned on me. I yelped at his sudden movement.
"You're pregnant?!!" he didn't even bother to lower his voice. The whole diner looked upon us like we were performing a scene from the Young and Restless. I took my time with my response. I was a drama queen, and to be honest, I was glad that he was finally directing his attention to me.
"I'm not playing any games Cecil. Answer me," his eyes piercing mine like daggers.
"Surprised babe? Thought you'd be," twirling a strand of hair around my finger, I gave Jeremy the sweetest smile I could muster.
I watched his eyes light up with annoyance before his hands came clamping down on my right arm. He pulled me from the booth and across the floor towards the exit. I didn't struggle with his grip. I didn't try to fight him off. I wanted this man's attention and now I'd finally captured it. The eyes of the rooms occupants dug knives in my back as the air grew heavy with concern. I smiled at a few people as I passed. They had nothing to worry about. Jeremy might be feeling low right now, but I was confident that I could change things.
The evening sunshine bathed the back alley behind the diner in cool, golden light. It would have been romantic if Jeremy's face didn't look like he was about to punch somebody in the stomach.
As soon as he released my arm, his questions came tumbling out.
"Why here? Why couldn't you have seen me in private?"
"You stopped answering my calls and texts Jeremy what was -"
"I would have seen the messages Cecil. You know how hard I've been trying with Grace -"
"Can we not talk about her for once! I'm so over it. Let's focus on our future together-"
"What are you talking about?! We have no future together Cecil. I am a married man,"
"You being married wasn't a problem before Jeremy. Plus do you really believe that Grace would want to see you now after what you've done? You heard her. Me getting pregnant was the last straw. She doesn't love you anymore,"
Jeremy flinched as if my words had harmed him physically. When he didn't reply, I took a step closer to where he stood. His eyes shadowed my movement carefully, recording each motion. I reached out to stroke his cheek. He allowed me. Slowly his eyes closed in response to my touch.
"Let me ease your frustrations,"
my words coming in hushed tones,
"I know exactly what you need. You can forget about Grace. Forget your worry. They don't care for you. I do."
His eyes snapped opened, locking with mines instantly.
"We have no future together. If that child is mine as you claim then I will play my part in his or her life. I promise you that much. Cecil, what you want from me I cannot provide. I made a mistake and now my decision will haunt me forever,"
I tried to hide my scowl as I gazed up at Jeremy. I've loved him since the moment my eyes met his. I love him. Grace did not deserve such a man.
"I've been warned against falling for married men. I've taken great heed over the years, but there's something about you Jeremy that has me going against all that I deem logical. Jeremy I love you. I want to be with you. Can't you see that Grace is a fool to let you go?"
Jeremy pulled my hands from his face without making a sound.
"I'm the fool for letting her go. Cecil I'm sorry, but I'll never feel the same way about you. We slept together. That's it. That's all there is to this. I'm sorry if I led you on. It wasn't my intention -"
Jeremy's P.O.V
"WHY ARE YOU SO STUPID!?" Cecil's voice echoed in the empty alley.
"I'm practically throwing myself at you and all you can think about is Grace, Grace, Grace. Don't I deserve happiness as well?"
"You're having a baby soon. Perhaps you can find happiness there. Cecil, again I never meant to hurt you -"
I watched as her head swung backwards in maniacal laughter.
"What's so funny?" I quizzed, confused by her outburst.
"What baby?" she croaked before slipping into another laughing fit.
