Release
With each day that passed without Haxus by her side (Y/n) felt more and more depressed; she tried not to get too depressed because she knew it could potentially make her miscarry, so she tried to keep herself busy while resting at the same time. A few more weeks passed and every once in a while she would sneak down to the dungeon at night after everyone went to sleep, having the opportunity to see her lover helped (Y/n) to not get too depressed. Her visits were the only thing keeping Haxus from going insane, he'd proved himself that he wasn't a threat to anyone and yet the paladins still wouldn't release him, he suspected Allura had something to do with it just because she hated his species, he didn't know how she could stand being around the Blades and Lotor if she couldn't even approve of him. (Y/n) knew that her and Haxus' baby couldn't hear her, but talking to them helped her not feel quite as sad since she carried around a part of Haxus with her wherever she went. She still had to avoid Allura at all costs each time she left her bedroom, (Y/n) was grateful the others still helped her to the best of their ability since early pregnancy wasn't easy for anyone, especially her because her baby would be half galra.
During (Y/n's) sixth week of pregnancy the paladins and Coran decided to hold a secret meeting in Kaltenecker's room while Lotor and Allura were busy doing something, they'd noticed how depressed (Y/n) had become and from what they could tell she hadn't eaten that day and not because her stomach hurt, but because of how depressed she'd become. It wasn't healthy for a pregnant woman to avoid eating and they knew it, they just weren't sure what they could do. Pidge made sure Allura and Lotor would be busy for a long time, that way there wouldn't be a risk of them finding out about the meeting. (Y/n) was currently taking a nap in her bedroom where she wouldn't be bothered, earlier she said she was tired and everyone respected her request for privacy. Once everyone sat down on the auto generated grass they looked at Shiro, knowing he would probably say something first.
"We all need to figure out how to help (Y/n) feel better. I know that none of us like the idea of her being in a relationship and having a baby with Haxus, but it's wrong if we're the purpose of her being depressed which could cause her to miscarry, especially since she's made it clear that she wants to continue her pregnancy." Shiro began after collecting his thoughts, looking at everyone else in the room.
"Interspecies pregnancies can have complications and have the potential to be dangerous for both the mother and child, so if we're going to do anything then we need to do it soon." Coran added thoughtfully, remembering Honerva's pregnancy and how the doctors on Altea said how dangerous an interspecies pregnancy could be for a woman.
"Haxus tried to kill us when he and Sendak attacked the castle with Sendak, but he seems to have changed since then." Pidge said when she thought about the time she interrogated Haxus, he didn't even threaten her which was strange; she'd even found Rover and repaired it after she went searching for her drone companion.
"That's true, whenever I bring him food he doesn't seem all evil like the galra in the empire. I know that this sounds crazy, but I think we should let him out. He's never once tried attacking us and he's been living here for a while." Hunk cut in; Haxus had plenty of opportunities to kill them and he never did, it was a sign that he'd actually changed.
"Yeah, but we've kept him prisoner, he might have second thoughts about killing us and then kill us in our sleep if we let him out!" Lance exclaimed, he knew that Haxus might want to get revenge on them, particularly him, because he was the one who found him in the first place.
It was true, Haxus might consider getting revenge on them for what they'd done, but at the same time he might not because he would be so preoccupied taking care of (Y/n) who was still pregnant with their offspring. Haxus hadn't been eating and drinking very much lately because he'd fallen into a deep depression after being captured, if he died of starvation because of them then (Y/n) would undoubtedly become depressed enough to miscarry. There was so much at stake and it all rested in their hands, releasing him could be dangerous and Allura would be very angry, but they didn't want to cause the two lovers any more pain and sorrow than they already had. It was hard for Shiro to trust any galra after what he'd been through at galra central command and it was difficult for Lance and Pidge to forgive Haxus for what he'd nearly done to them in the past, although if the ex-lieutenant had truly changed then he wouldn't get revenge on them. Being a paladin of Voltron sometimes meant making hard decisions and taking chances, releasing Haxus would be the best decision they could make before it was too late.
"I believe we all know what's best." Coran spoke up after everyone thought about it, knowing the paladins were thinking the exact same thing.
"When should we release him?" Pidge hesitantly asked Shiro, ultimately it was his decision as the leader of Voltron and she respected his decision.
"As soon as possible, we can't wait any longer to hope he and (Y/n) get over their depression." Shiro answered with a sigh; freeing Haxus wasn't easy for any of them but it had to be done.
"Then it's unanimous, we release Haxus before Allura and Lotor are finished with their studies." Coran responded solemnly, even though he was nervous about letting Haxus out of the dungeon.
The paladins and Coran nodded before they all stood up and left Kaltenecker's room after they each gave her a little attention, going straight to the dungeon so they could finally release Haxus and reunited him with (Y/n). (Y/n) would be so surprised when she saw Haxus again, Hunk decided to go make something in the kitchen for them to eat, then he would give it to Haxus so he could take it to her himself. They were risking so much by letting Haxus out of the dungeon, although if it meant saving his and (Y/n's) lives then they would do it and even help them eventually find a safe home. Since Haxus hadn't eaten much lately he wouldn't have all of his strength, he would probably willingly follow them to (Y/n's) room once they released him. While Shiro, Coran, Lance and Pidge were releasing Haxus, Hunk decided to make something special for Haxus and (Y/n); (F/f) for (Y/n) and a Roynu lamb burger for Haxus.
__________
Naturally when three of the paladins and Coran came down to the dungeon and turned off the force field to release him, Haxus refused to believe they would actually free him since they'd made no move to do so earlier. However, after Shiro explained everything about how they didn't want to cause any more stress to him and (Y/n) he questioned their motives and hesitantly trusted them. During the elevator ride back up Haxus had to control his protective instincts towards (Y/n), he couldn't just hurry to their room because he wanted to make a good impression so that he wouldn't get locked up again. He hadn't seen his mate in what felt like years and he fought the urge to let out a longing yowl like he'd done during his time as a prisoner, making such a sound around humans would undoubtedly frighten them to death. The paladins and Coran refrained from telling him about how depressed (Y/n) had been in fear of him turning on them, everyone knew to watch their tongues and actions around a possessive mated galra.
Haxus was surprised when Hunk gave him a serving tray with food and water on it, it was even more surprising when they gave him an approving look before sending him on his way. His heart pounded in his chest with every step he took, he was about to see (Y/n) again and he could barely wait to cuddle with her in the privacy of their bedroom. From what Coran told him (Y/n) hadn't eaten at all that day because of her depression and he intended to help her feel better; he was still angry at Lance for not minding his own business, but he was too concerned about his lover to do anything about it, plus Lance apologized during the elevator ride. Haxus took a deep breath once he stood in front of his and (Y/n's) bedroom door, feeling a little nervous to see his mate again after spending such a long time without her. He saw her curled up amongst their many blankets and pillows when he finally entered their room, her back facing the door while she seemingly slept.
"Go away, I'm not hungry." (Y/n) mumbled when she heard someone come into her room, thinking it was either Coran or one of the paladins; they'd been trying to get her to eat all day, she was too depressed to eat, though.
"You need to eat, even if I have to feed you myself." Haxus responded firmly, a hint of humor seeping into his tone as he spoke and made himself known.
"Haxus? Did they really let you out?" (Y/n) questioned in disbelief and excitement, immediately turning over and sitting up as soon as she heard the voice of her lover; tears pricked the corners of her eyes when she saw Haxus standing in the center of their room, already knowing she was going to cry.
"They let me out because they were worried about you miscarrying, I'm glad they did because you need to eat and drink something." Haxus replied, a soft expression appearing on his otherwise tired looking face.
(Y/n) had to wipe her tears away while Haxus put the serving tray down on the nightstand before he sat next to her, climbing onto his lap to sit and hug him as soon as he sat down. She never thought that the paladins would ever let Haxus out of the dungeon, she figured they made the decision without Allura because she knew the altean princess would never agree to it. Tears spilled down (Y/n's) cheeks when Haxus gently wrapped his arms around her smaller body, letting out all of the pent up sorrow and worry she'd been holding in. Haxus cried as well, he couldn't hold his own emotions in any longer since he was finally in the presence of the woman he'd claimed as his life mate, they were finally reunited and he could never let anyone separate them again, even Shiro, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Coran gave their word that they wouldn't let them be separated again. Being apart for so long had a negative effect on their mental well-being, although being reunited would give them the chance to heal from their traumatic separation.
Haxus wanted to hold (Y/n) against him and never let her go, he desperately needed to feel her and she needed to be held by him; being locked down in the dungeon had made him touch starved which caused him to become depressed, now that he was back with his mate he would be able to heal. They just sat there for a while, embracing each other lovingly while shedding tears of happiness and relief. They would have to be careful to avoid Allura at any cost, thankfully Haxus had a really good sense of smell and he could smell which direction she was in so they could avoid her easier. Just breathing in his light musky scent made (Y/n) feel relaxed, her sense of smell became a little stronger than before after a few weeks of her pregnancy passed. Haxus loved breathing in (Y/n's) natural scent, he loved it even more during that moment because she also smelled of pregnancy, he would've definitely described the scent as a light sweetness, one he wasn't familiar with but was proud to have partially been the cause of.
"I missed you so much, Hax. I never thought I'd ever see you again and the thought of having our baby without you scared me." (Y/n) spoke quietly against his chest, tightening her grip on him as much as she could.
"I know, darling. I missed you as well, more than you'll ever know. We won't be separated again, from now on I'm going to take care of you and our unborn kit. I love you so much, my enchanting mate." Haxus replied whilst purring deeply in his chest, feeling happy and excited to be with (Y/n) again.
"I love you too, my handsome soldier." (Y/n) responded with a new nickname she'd come up for him, one of which he loved based on the particularly loud purr that rattled through his chest accompanied by the playful nip he gave her right earlobe.
"Now that we're alone we can finally eat, you need your nutrition to stay healthy." Haxus replied humorously while grinning, his gaze meeting (Y/n's) when they made eye contact.
(Y/n) covered her mouth with one hand and giggled, even though Haxus didn't have a sense of humor by human standards he could still be a little funny at times, his sense of humor was just different. She had to get off of his lap for a moment so he could bring the tray closer, both of them scooting back so they could prop themselves up with a couple of fluffy pillows. Haxus took a couple of bites from his burger before he started hand feeding his pregnant mate, an intimate activity bonded couples often enjoyed doing together, especially while expecting offspring. (Y/n) thought it was sweet of Haxus to feed her by hand, the simple gesture made her feel as though she had butterflies fluttering around in her belly. Zarkon was dead and the paladins were working on restoring peace throughout the universe, it wouldn't be long before they could actually have a home of their own.
