Insults and empty threats
When you woke up and saw that Haxus was still sleeping on your bed, you quickly got dressed and left your room so that you could join everyone for breakfast. Ever since Haxus started sleeping in your room, you made a makeshift bed on your floor so that he could have your bed for the time being. You didn't like how he always glared at and insulted you, but you knew that it was to be expected due to who he was. Breakfast that morning consisted of fruit flavored food goo, but you were a little too preoccupied to eat. You felt bad for Haxus; whatever he had been through during his life, it made him bitter to everyone around him. Shiro, being the caring person he was, noticed how you were barely eating.
"Hey, is everything alright?" Shiro queried as he looked at you, concerned about how you were doing; he knew that constantly being in the Castle could be boring.
"Huh? Oh, yeah, I'm okay. I just have some things on my mind." You answered in realization when Shiro spoke to you, looking up at him.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Shiro asked you with curiosity, using his usual friendly tone while speaking to you.
"No, at least not right now. I'm just conflicted about it." You told him, feeling conflicted about your situation with Haxus.
"Coran says that we'll be going to a swap moon soon. Would you like to come with us?" Lance questioned, speaking up all of a sudden; he knew how you needed to get out for a while, so he figured that he would suggest it.
"Yeah, I think that I will." You responded, smiling a little as you turned your attention to Lance; you figured that getting out would do you some good.
Shiro smiled, even though he had the feeling that you were hiding something; whatever it was though, he wasn't going to be nosey. After a moment, you grabbed your spoon and started eating your food goo, feeling a little less conflicted. All throughout breakfast, you talked to each of the Paladins, Coran and Allura about random stuff, which helped you feel a lot better. Once breakfast was finished, Hunk helped you with the dishes since he wanted to help you before going to do the usual Paladin stuff. You got a bowl of food goo, a spoon and a cup of water once everyone was elsewhere so that you could take breakfast to Haxus.
"It's about time that you got here." Haxus growled weakly when you entered your room, glaring at you.
"Well I'm sorry, but I've been busy." You responded in a sassy tone, giving him breakfast before standing back.
"Ah, yes, with those weaklings who call themselves Paladins. It's an embarrassment that the Lions would choose children as their Paladins." Haxus spoke in a venomous tone as he took the bowl and the spoon, briefly looking at the cup of water that you put on the nightstand.
"They're not children… Well, Shiro isn't and they're doing better these days." You said matter-of-factly, crossing your arms over your chest.
"They'll fail. As soon as I'm fully healed, I'm going to kill you first before ridding the universe of the Paladins, and then Sendak will take me back. I don't know why you saved me, but just know that it was in vain." Haxus threatened, curling his upper lip back as he spoke; he appreciated you saving him, so his threat was mostly empty.
"Hey, I saved you because I didn't want you to die! Sendak left you for dead because he doesn't care about you and he never did, but I do! I know that you don't see it that way, and maybe you don't care, but I saved your sorry ass and I don't regret it. Unlike that senile Emperor of yours, the Paladins are trying to make a difference for the better. If you can't understand that everyone deserves to be free and that everyone has a place in life, then you're nothing more than a thick headed idiot!" You yelled at the skinny Galran male who was laying on your bed, your frustration finally snapping; after giving him a piece of your mind, you had to leave your room before you slapped him silly.
Haxus was beyond shocked by your outburst, listening to everything you had to say and watching with wide eyes as you left in a hurry. Up until that point, he thought that you were only treating him nice because you were planning on keeping him as a prisoner. If you were right, and Sendak really had left him and wasn't coming back, then he would never be accepted back into the Galra Empire. For as long as he could remember, his goal was to be loyal to Sendak and Zarkon, but now that was all over. After everything you told him, Haxus knew that he needed to turn his life around; it would be a slow process, but he would eventually change his ways.
__________
While the Paladins were having a bonding session in the training deck, Lance couldn't help but get the feeling that you were hiding something. Shiro obviously felt the same way, but he knew that the older man wasn't the type to pry. Lance, however, definitely was the kind of person who was overly curious. He didn't think about you all throughout the bonding session, but during the short break, he decided to ask Pidge if she knew anything.
"Y/n's definitely up to something." Lance said casually when he sat next to Pidge, a serious look on his face.
"So what? She's probably not even hiding something." Pidge responded as she rolled her eyes, sitting cross legged on the floor.
"How do you know that?" Lance asked her in disbelief; he knew that you were hiding something, but he didn't know what it was.
"It's none of our business, Lance." Pidge answered in a firm tone, narrowing her eyes as she looked at the Blue Paladin.
"I agree, it isn't our business if she's hiding something or not." Keith commented as he butted in on the conversation, sitting in front of Pidge.
"Of course you would think that, mullet." Lance scoffed, glaring at his rival; he had a hate boner for Keith, especially since he of all people wasn't interested in what you were hiding.
"Whatever." Keith muttered as he looked at Lance, wishing that the younger boy wasn't so nosey.
"Enough you two, we need to give Y/n the benefit of the doubt. She isn't hiding anything; she's only stressed because she has cabin fever." Shiro spoke up when he heard Keith and Lance beginning to argue, not wanting them to start fighting again.
Lance just sat there and pouted while Pidge and Keith stood up, both of them deciding to go talk to someone else. As Shiro walked back over to Allura and Coran, he hoped that the upcoming trip to the Space Mall would help you relax. After everything that had happened within the past two weeks or so, everyone was more than stressed out. Things would get better now that the Paladins would make contact with the Blade of Marmora thanks to Ulaz, who had returned to the main Blade of Marmora headquarters.
"Shiro, is something wrong?" Allura asked Shiro when he walked over to her and Coran, noticing the conflicted look on his face.
"Lance thinks that Y/n is hiding something when she's not. I think that being mostly isolated is getting to him." Shiro answered while rubbing his temples; being the leader of Voltron was very stressful at times, especially since he was leading a team of teenagers.
"Ah, I see. Don't worry, we'll be at the swap moon soon enough." Coran reassured Shiro, patting the new Black Paladin on his right shoulder.
Shiro sighed, knowing that Coran was right; everyone needed a casual day out. He would need to stay behind to bond with the Black Lion, but he was happy that everyone else would get to go out for a day. Meanwhile, while everyone was in the training room, you were trying to relax somewhere else in the Castle. You were starting to doubt that Haxus was capable of a change of heart; you knew that his earlier threat was an empty one, but it still worried you. Thankfully, your hard work of trying to help him turn his life around would eventually work.
