A secret revealed
When Haxus asked (Y/n) for permission to court her he knew that they would eventually end up having kids together, it was always to be expected with couples where at least one partner was galra. After their little talk (Y/n) felt comfortable being pregnant, or at least as much as she could despite having some pretty nasty symptoms; evening sickness was one thing to deal with and by far the worst, the others such as daytime fatigue, aches and pains, overly sensitive nipples and hair beginning to grow in places it never grew before were mostly minor annoyances. During the day Haxus searched for a safe planet to take (Y/n) after he hacked into the galra empire's database, he had been narrowing his search down quite a bit and there were a few good options. He felt humbled and proud at the same time knowing that he was the one who knocked (Y/n) up, he'd been a good galra mate who impregnated the woman of whom he planned on spending his life with. Naturally, Haxus also had his concerns; he felt scared that he would be a bad father and somehow hurt his significant other and their children, he was thankful that he could talk about his concerns with (Y/n) who was always there to listen to him.
Ever since (Y/n) started getting sick during the evening the paladins all chipped in to help keep things clean around the castle; Lance did the laundry, Allura and Shiro dusted, Keith used the ancient altean vacuum to keep any carpets clean once Coran fixed it, Hunk still did all the cooking, Coran did the dishes and Pidge took care of Kaltenecker. (Y/n) appreciated their help and always thanked them, although Coran wanted to scan her to find out why she kept getting sick and she knew that she couldn't stop him forever, if Haxus didn't find a place for them to go soon then everyone would know her biggest secret. She felt sad that she would be leaving the castle: the paladins, Allura and Coran were like family to her, the only downside was she knew they wouldn't trust Haxus if they knew about him living among them for over a year. Haxus could tell that keeping him and their baby a secret was wearing down on (Y/n's) nerves, he genuinely felt guilty for being the cause of her stress, although he always did his best to comfort her. When they woke up one morning in particular Haxus was gently snuggling with (Y/n) like he always did, purring softly and peppering delicate kisses on her face, neck and collarbone.
"I'm going to miss you when you leave." Haxus spoke sadly while he held (Y/n) against his body, both of them facing each other while laying on their sides.
"I'm only going to be gone for about an hour, after I come back we can cuddle again while you tell me about some of the planets you think would be safe for us to live on." (Y/n) replied sweetly, she loved how much more affectionate he'd been ever since they found out about her being pregnant and she decided to continue her pregnancy, with him by her side she would be alright.
"It gets lonely when you're away." Haxus responded, his smile faltering a little as he spoke; being left alone in their room had taken a toll on his mental health and it'd been causing him to experience separation anxiety.
"I know, but in the next week or so we're going to hopefully have a home of our own." (Y/n) said with a hopeful tone; she couldn't wait to move out of the castle with her lover, especially before she had a noticeable baby bump.
Haxus hummed in agreement prior to nuzzling her forehead, he felt nothing but love for her and her pregnancy pheromones had a calming effect on him. The fact that their baby wouldn't be fully galra didn't matter to him by that point, he wanted them to take after both himself and (Y/n), and for their child to be healthy when they were born. Eventually (Y/n) got out of bed so she could join the others for breakfast, she felt particularly hungry that morning and knowing Hunk she knew he probably figured out how to make something delicious by using ingredients bought at the space mall. On her way to the dining room she subconsciously placed her hands over her lower abdomen and smiled, she wasn't sure what her and Haxus' baby would look like nor did she know if they were going to be a boy or a girl, but she had a feeling that they were going to actually be adorable since they weren't fully human. (Y/n) stopped rubbing her lower abdomen when she saw Shiro step into the hallway she was walking in from another, he didn't seem to notice what she'd been doing a couple of seconds prior which was a good thing, she didn't need him to ask her any questions she couldn't answer without revealing Haxus.
"Sooo… Things have been really busy lately for you guys." (Y/n) said casually, breaking the awkward silence that had been driving her a little crazy after she and Shiro began walking together.
"It's all a part of freeing the universe from Zarkon's grip. How are you feeling this morning?" Shiro replied with a sigh, changing the subject since he was genuinely worried about her well-being.
"I'm feeling good so far." (Y/n) answered as calmly as she could without raising suspicion, she just wanted to go about her day like usual.
Shiro hummed in acknowledgement, happy that the young woman next to him was feeling better; he couldn't help but wonder if there was more than meets the eye about her mysterious condition. He wasn't going to judge her, though, if she had a secret relationship with someone and had gotten pregnant he knew she would eventually have the courage to tell either him or Coran. The one thing Shiro didn't know was that (Y/n's) secret significant other was Haxus and not one of the Blades like he thought, (Y/n) already knew what everyone's reaction would be if they knew the truth. During their walk to the dining room (Y/n) and Shiro were joined by Pidge who had been tinkering with something in one of the rooms hardly anyone used, if anyone who benefited from the extra random rooms it was the youngest member of Team Voltron. (Y/n) looked forward to eating breakfast with everyone that morning, recently Hunk found a new kind of alien cereal and she couldn't wait to try it; deep down in her gut (Y/n) felt like something was going to happen, but she shoved that feeling down because she thought it was just her hormones messing with her.
__________
After having breakfast with everyone (Y/n) helped Coran put the dirty breakfast dishes into the dishwasher; she waited until everyone went to go do their own things, then she made a bowl of cereal for Haxus and added some milk to it since he'd developed a taste for it. She spent a little extra time with him as she usually did so that he wouldn't feel as though she was avoiding him, because she wasn't, unfortunately they couldn't spend the whole day together like they wanted. The paladins were taking a day off from universe saving because Zarkon hadn't really been up to anything that day which was strange, although it meant they were going to be around all day and (Y/n) had to be careful about what she did. (Y/n) decided to take a shower after she and Haxus had a little intimate time together; they didn't have sex but there had been plenty of kissing and touching during their quality time together. They'd tested their luck many times and unfortunately their luck was about to run out, with the paladins being around for the entire day Lance had enough with (Y/n's) strange behavior and her sudden mystery sickness only made him more suspicious, so naturally he was going to do a little investigating.
For the longest time the former blue paladin had a feeling that (Y/n) was hiding something in her room, but as soon as he entered the young woman's bedroom while she was showering he felt as though his heart stopped for a moment when he saw Haxus sitting on the bed; Haxus would have attacked the human teen but Lance’s bayard turned into a blaster and Lance held Haxus at blaster point. The last person Lance or anyone else expected to see was Haxus, Pidge told everyone she saw him fall down a chute after Rover sacrificed itself, so after Lance contacted the others through the comm system attached to the collar of his jacket and they came to assist him Shiro put shackles on Haxus before they led him down to the dungeon. No one could believe it, (Y/n) had saved Haxus at some point and was living with him in her room for over a year, especially Pidge who'd almost been killed by the ex-lieutenant and watched him seemingly fall to his death. All Haxus could do was let himself be led down to the dungeon where he would be kept in solitary confinement until further notice, otherwise he would be killed where he stood and this time he wouldn't be able to be saved. There was a lot going through everyone's minds; Allura and Pidge wanted to just toss Haxus out of the nearest airlock, although Coran and Shiro wanted to hear (Y/n's) side of the story before they made a final decision about what to do about the unexpected stowaway.
When (Y/n) eventually came out of the bathroom and started walking to her and Haxus' bedroom she felt clean and refreshed, but when she saw the paladins and Coran waiting in front of her room she felt her stomach drop, something had happened during her brief absence and she could tell it wasn't good. She could always feign innocence if they didn't know about Haxus, unfortunately she had a gut feeling that they knew and she was in trouble. A thought then crossed her mind; what if it was too late and they decided to just throw Haxus out of the airlock? Everyone just stood there in silence, (Y/n) looked at the paladins and Coran and they looked at her, no one knew what to say during such a situation. (Y/n) felt as though she was going to break down crying, she feared her significant other was dead and that she would have to go through life without him by her side, he didn't even get the chance to tell her about the possible home locations for them that he found.
"(Y/n), we need to talk." Shiro spoke firmly after a couple of minutes, his voice wavering ever so slightly when he broke the silence.
"Before any of you say anything it's not what it looks like… I- I- mean he-" (Y/n) attempted to explain, feeling tears welling up in her eyes as she tried thinking of ways to tell the paladins and Coran about what she did and why she did it.
"You betrayed us, so tell me exactly how it isn't what it looks like. You saved the life of an enemy and kept him hidden in your room for who knows how long, I can only imagine what disgusting things the two of you have been up to." Allura fumed accusingly, narrowing her eyes at (Y/n); she could hardly believe (Y/n) saved Haxus' life and proceeded to allow him to live with her, she'd never been more pissed off at anyone during her life.
"I didn't mean to betray anyone, I just couldn't leave him down there to die. It's just- one thing turned into another and pretty soon I gained his trust. Haxus is different now, I promise; he's not the bloodthirsty killer he used to be." (Y/n) explained as best as she could; she did her best not to cry but she felt a few warm tears trickle down her cheeks.
"A likely story." Pidge muttered under her breath, she couldn't even look (Y/n) in the eye because of how angry she was at her.
"I knew it! I've been saying it all along and no one would believe me! I had a gut feeling that you were hiding someone in your room!" Lance ranted loudly, wildly gesturing towards (Y/n) with open arms.
"That's enough, Lance." Shiro scolded the younger boy, a deadpan expression crossing his usually friendly looking face.
"It's true! If he was then we would have all been dead by now. Please, you have to believe me." (Y/n) pleaded; she needed to convince the paladins that she got Haxus to change, she didn't want him to be executed because they didn't believe her.
"No one has to believe you, you were harboring a war criminal from us this whole time! We're going to hand him over to the Blade of Marmora when there's an opening, they'll deal with that thing accordingly." Allura jabbed, she refused to believe any galra could turn good, she still barely tolerated the members of the Blade of Marmora.
"No… P-please don't! We- we're bonded and I- I'm carrying Haxus' baby." (Y/n) faltered fearfully as she gave Allura a pleading look as a final act of desperation; sure, basically telling everyone that she and Haxus fucked and he accidentally got her pregnant probably wasn't the best idea, but she had to do anything she could to prevent Haxus' death.
Everyone in the hallway nearly gasped when (Y/n) not only admitted to being in a relationship with Haxus but that he'd also gotten her pregnant. (Y/n) rubbed away at the makeup on her neck she used to conceal the mating bite Haxus left on her, showing everybody that she was indeed the mate of a galra and marked by him as well; her sickness and strange behavior made much more sense to the paladins, especially Coran who had been around to see what happened when a galran man impregnated a woman of another species. Allura was absolutely furious, she couldn't believe that (Y/n) allowed for such a thing to happen, she truly believed Haxus had manipulated her and was only using her as a way to get closer to the paladins. Hunk was the only person in the hallway who didn't say anything during the whole ordeal, he didn't like that (Y/n) fell in love with Haxus but if Haxus truly changed then it would explain why he looked remorseful on the way down to the dungeon. (Y/n) clasped her hands together and looked down at her feet, it took everything in her to not break down crying right then and there.
"We won't separate them." Coran spoke up after a few minutes passed, he refused to let anyone tear (Y/n) and Haxus apart; earlier he could tell Haxus didn't mean anyone any harm, unlike before when he'd been with Sendak.
"WHAT?! Coran, you can not be serious!" Allura all but shrieked, turning to glare at her royal advisor, primary guardian and father figure.
"Princess, I have to put my foot down this time. As you know, Galra mate for life, if Haxus claimed (Y/n) as his life mate then his feelings for her are genuine." Coran explained with a calm tone, yet firmly enough to where Allura wouldn't argue with him.
"I- Fine, but he stays in the dungeon." Allura quietly accepted, averting her gaze while gently biting her bottom lip; she hated having an enemy living in the castle, although at the same time she knew that she needed to give him a fair chance.
(Y/n) looked at Coran and humbly thanked him, with Haxus being in the dungeon she knew he was obviously still alive and in the castle, thanks to Coran and possibly Shiro he would at least remain in the same ship. Allura had to leave before she acted out in anger while Lance had to lead Pidge away, Haxus had traumatized her during their battle and she was still depressed about losing Rover. (Y/n) felt kind of guilty about making everyone uncomfortable, she'd almost forgotten exactly what Haxus did to them a couple of weeks before she found him. Hunk was so anxious that he decided to go bake some cookies, something he did whenever he was stressed; only Coran and Shiro remained in the hallway, (Y/n) had the impression they wanted to talk to her. The two men slowly approached her, glancing at each other for about a tick once they were standing a few feet in front of her.
"So then this whole time you were hiding Haxus? How did you manage to save his life and take care of him?" Shiro asked (Y/n) with curiosity, stunned as to how his friend had kept Haxus secret for so long; when the paladins came to capture him he'd been wearing a casual outfit, obviously she took the time to actually care for him.
(Y/n) sighed prior to looking up at Shiro and Coran, fully prepared to fully explain everything to them since they seemed to be taking the current situation better than everyone else. She naturally started from the beginning when she found him laying half dead in one of lower levels of the castle, getting Haxus up to the healing pod room had been difficult because of his size but she still managed to do it. Coran and Shiro listened to everything (Y/n) told them; the way she often snuck around, especially after every meal for the past year or so, made so much more sense to them and they understood why she did it, she did it to rehabilitate Haxus which worked and led to them ending up in a romantic relationship. A lot had happened after (Y/n) saved Haxus' life, not only did he turn his life around but he also wasn't a bloodthirsty killer anymore, although he was still his usual sassy self. By the time she finished explaining everything (Y/n) felt as though a huge weight had been lifted off her chest, she really missed her significant other and finally telling the truth about what she'd been up to felt good.
"So then you actually managed to convince Haxus to turn his life around?" Coran asked (Y/n) in amazement, he could hardly believe what she had accomplished in such a short amount of time.
"I didn't exactly convince him, he chose to be a better person all on his own after I earned his respect. I think it was something I said during our first argument that helped, though." (Y/n) answered; she honestly didn't know exactly how she got someone like Haxus to change his ways, but whatever she did definitely worked.
"It's hard to believe, though. Until we're one hundred percent sure Haxus can be trusted we can't let you see him. I understand that you're in a delicate condition right now but I don't want to risk him harming you and the baby." Shiro told (Y/n) solemnly since he felt bad for keeping them apart, unfortunately until they could trust Haxus it had to be done.
"I understand. If it's alright, I'd like to go rest in my room now." (Y/n) sighed, feeling her bottom lip wobbling as she tried to force herself not to cry again.
Shiro and Coran nodded before leaving; Shiro planned on talking to the other paladins while Coran decided to go comfort Allura, a lot happened that day and everyone just needed some comforting. (Y/n) was hesitant to go back to her and Haxus' bedroom, it felt far too empty without him and she already felt as though her heart shattered into a million pieces; their room felt lonelier than the young woman expected and with her lover being held prisoner she would have to adjust to being alone for a while. She got up on the bed, curled up under one of Haxus' favorite blankets and finally gave into the sadness that was quickly eating away at her, all (Y/n) could do was cry by that point. Everything she did to keep Haxus secret from the paladins had ultimately been for nothing, Lance found him before they could secretly leave together and now her worst fear had come to life. While (Y/n) laid crying in bed Haxus was sitting alone in a prison cell, worrying himself sick about (Y/n) who was undoubtedly feeling very lonely without him; he had to be on his best behavior if he wanted to be released sooner rather than later, he was determined to prove that he'd changed so he could be there for (Y/n).
__________
Lance, Hunk and Pidge sat on different seats in the lounge after they had some time to think, all three of them waiting for Shiro and Coran to arrive. Lance and Pidge were more affected than everyone else in the castle since they'd personally been hurt by Haxus in one way or another, it was surprising how calm Shiro appeared to be since he'd been hurt by Haxus as well back when he and Sendak stormed the castle. Out of everyone on the team they never imagined that (Y/n) would betray them in such a way, to take pity on a ruthless killer and take care of him as though he were an old friend; not only that, but the young woman was in a romantic relationship with said ruthless killer and they were expecting a baby of all things. Pidge and Lance were tempted to just toss the galran man out of the airlock and they knew Allura would wholeheartedly agree with them, unfortunately they couldn't and they had to deal with it. Hunk, on the other hand, was on the fence about the whole situation since he liked to believe all sentient beings were capable of change.
Oddly enough Haxus didn't put up a fight when Lance found him in (Y/n's) room nor did he fight back when the others came, although they figured it was just a ruse to get them to trust him. The three teens looked up when the lounge doors slid open only to reveal Coran and Shiro; Allura still needed time to cool down in her room, so she wouldn't be attending the little meeting Shiro decided to have. Pidge silently wondered if Rover was still down near where (Y/n) found Haxus, if the galran man had been found then perhaps she could find her robotic companion. On the way to the lounge Shiro and Coran had a discussion about how to bring up the subject of (Y/n) and Haxus, it was a touchy subject particularly for Lance and Pidge and they didn't want them to be more upset than they already were. Everyone just looked at each other for a moment, thinking of what to say in order to break the uncomfortably awkward silence.
"I don't like having Haxus in the castle, especially since he nearly killed some of us." Lance mumbled after a few ticks, not looking up from his lap when he spoke, arms crossed tightly over his chest.
"I know that it's not ideal to have him living here, but we need to make sure he actually changed before we do anything drastic." Shiro said with a sigh, rubbing the upper part of his nose with two fingers; he honestly didn't like housing an enemy, although he wasn't going to be cruel like most of the galra he'd been around during his time in captivity.
"Are we seriously giving the bad guy the benefit of the doubt?" Pidge questioned, raising an eyebrow as she looked at the two older men who had sat down before Lance broke the silence.
"I'm afraid so, number five. Sometimes being a Paladin of Voltron means giving people second chances." Coran replied regretfully, hoping that this time around giving someone a second chance wouldn't lead to the destruction of the new paladins.
Pidge looked at Lance and he looked at her, deep down they knew Coran was right about giving Haxus a second chance, especially since he showed no signs of killing them yet. It wasn't easy for any of them to accept that (Y/n) did what she did to save Haxus, but she did what she did and there was absolutely nothing anyone could do about it by that point. Lance kind of regretted going into (Y/n's) room without permission, if he hadn't then life would go on as it had been ever since they started their little adventure in space and no one would know about what was going on without them knowing. The image of the depressed expression on Haxus' face after they locked him in a cell was burned into Hunk's memory, he could tell Haxus would deeply miss (Y/n) until they could be reunited. Having to take care of two prisoners wouldn't be easy, thankfully everyone except for Allura and (Y/n) could take turns taking food and water down to them.
"What are we going to do about (Y/n)? She's pregnant now and you've seen how sick she gets in the evening. We can't let her go through this alone." Hunk said when he finally spoke up; he was scared of Haxus but he was also worried about (Y/n), he couldn't stop thinking about her delicate condition.
"We won't, the important thing is to not let her get too stressed out, it would be bad for her and the baby if she does. We'll all help her through this." Shiro answered truthfully, he knew pregnancy could be difficult for human women to go through, he'd seen it back when he worked at the Garrison when a coworker got pregnant and had to go on maternity leave.
Hunk, Lance and Pidge looked at each other and nodded, even though they were upset with (Y/n) didn't mean they hated her even though she'd kept the universe's biggest secret from them. One of the things they had to do was keep Allura away from (Y/n), fearing that the altean princess would go into a rampage and do something she might regret if she saw (Y/n). Coran remembered that there were some baby supplies packed away somewhere from when Allura was a baby, he could find and clean some of it off so he could give some of it to (Y/n) so she could use it for her baby after they were born. Once their little meeting was finished Coran, Pidge, Hunk, Shiro and Lance went to go do their own things until later; Hunk would check in on (Y/n) though, he felt like she needed someone to comfort her. While everyone in the upper part of the castle recovered from the day's earlier events Haxus was sitting alone in his prison cell, yowling longingly for his mate who couldn't hear his lonely cries.
