Chapter 108

Ashton's PoV:

I woke up in the morning to an empty bed and the smell of coffee from the main room.

Rolling out of the bed I stretched my muscles before walking into the living area of our hotel room to see Carter carrying a sleeping Gracie while Ender jumped behind her trying to wake Gracie up.

"Good morning." I smiled as I joined them, kissing Carters head before moving to Gracie's face that was smushed on her shoulder.

"And good morning to my sleepy little princess." I took Gracie from Carters arms and began to rock her in my own, kissing her sleeping face. "Sweet girl."

Gracie finally woke up and I went to get her dressed.

"Ashton I can't find my phone char-" I looked up when I heard Carter speak and watched as she went to walk in the open bedroom door but ran right into the wall, falling back on her bum.

"Oh my God, Car are you okay?" I set Gracie on the floor (only half dressed) and went over to Carter.

"Ouch." She put a hand on her head.

"Did you not see the wall?" I asked her.

"No I did, I just misjudged how far away it was."

I narrowed my eyes skeptically at her before holding up two fingers.

"How many fingers am I holding up?" I asked.

"Two." She rolled her eyes.

I stood up and moved further away, I put my hand behind my back then held up two fingers again.

"Okay now now many am I holding up?" I asked her.

"Four." She answered and I sighed.

"What?"

"I'm taking you to the eye doctor." I went for my phone.

"What, why?" She protested, standing up.

"Because I held up two fingers again."

She frowned at this.

"Ashton I can see perfectly fine!"

"Tell that to the wall." I muttered as I began to look up eye doctors.

The door to our room opened and the guys walked in.

"Woah, what are you doing running around half naked?" Luke asked Gracie who was running around squealing. "Come on, let's go
finish getting you dressed."

He picked her up and took her to the bedroom.

"What happened here?" Michael asked at Carters pouting state and me on my phone.

"Someone is blind and won't admit to it and ran into the wall." I explained, Michael and Calum bursting into laughter.

"Shut up!" Carter whined.

"Okay I found an eye doctor that takes our insurance, let's go." I said and Carter began to protest.

I let her say goodbye to the kids before literally picking her up and carrying her out of our hotel room.

"I don't like you anymore." She grumpily pouted as I carried her to the car where we got inside.

"You'll get over it."

Once in the vehicle she began to sulk.

I was on my phone scrolling around when I got on Twitter to see Michael had tweeted:

'*walks into Ashton's hotel room. Carter is sitting on floor, Gracie is running around half naked, Ender is brushing his teeth like nothing weird is going on*
me: what happened?
Ashton: Carter ran into the wall.'

I snorted a laugh and retweeted it before sending out my own.

'Carter ran into the wall in our hotel room this morning. I am now taking her to the eye doctor. She said she doesn't like me anymore :('

"Rude." Carter muttered from where she was looking at her phone next to me.

When we got to the eye doctor I practically had to drag Carter inside and then sat her down in a chair before going to the counter to get a form to fill out for her.

"I don't need glasses." She whined as I sat down next to her to start filling out the forms but I just rolled my eyes at her.

"Ashton." She continued to pout as I flipped through the papers, checking boxes and answering medical questions. By the amount of forms I had helped fill out both times she had been in the hospital, I pretty much had her medical information memorised.

She was being bratty though and wouldn't sign the forms so I signed for her before taking them back up to the lady.

"Halle Chase?" A woman came out from a hallway and I pulled Carter up from her chair before dragging her behind me as I followed the lady.

She took us to this room and began to do tests on Carters eyes; making her follow a pen moving without moving her head, reading charts while covering one eye, scanning them with this machine thing, and then they got to the puff of air in the eye test and Carter freaked out.

She flinched and scooted the chair away every time and even when I went to hold her in place she still couldn't do it and finally the lady gave up.

She took us into another room where they had that weird eye machine to see what her prescription was and we waited in there for her doctor.

"Hey Car, how many fingers am I holding up?" I asked her, holding up two fingers again and videoing her with my phone as I sat on the other side of the room.

"Two." She said after looking at me.

"You're blind as shit, how do you know?"

"Because I figured out I see double of whatever you're actually holding up so I divided." She said.

"Smart ass." I chuckled. "And you're telling the doctor the truth, no dividing and trying to make it seem like you can see because you can't."

"I wanna go home." She whined.

"No, you're getting glasses."

"I hate you."

"Aw, I love you too." I laughed only for her to stick her tongue out at me.

Finally the doctor came in and began to ask Carter questions and then proceeded to figure out her prescription.

Once it was figured out we went back out to the front to pick out frames.

I helped Carter try them on until we decided on a pair of black frames, they were just a little bit rounded at the bottom but were mostly square. Honestly they looked super cute on her and they went to put the lenses in while we waited.

We bought the glasses and I made her wear them out of the store and back to the hotel.

"Hey, how's it going four eyes?" Michael teased as we walked in the door.

"Shut up." She muttered as she huffily sat down on the sofa.

Ender walked out of the bedroom and immediately burst into laughter.

"Hey, leave her alone." I said but he continued to make fun of her.

As the morning passed Carter seemed to get more and more upset about the fact that she needed glasses and finally I had had enough of it.

I made up an excuse to leave and walked out into the hallway, calling Ari.

"Hey what's up?" She answered.

"Okay so I need your help. I had to take Carter to get glasses today because she can't see for shit but she's pitching a fit about it. Like she's so upset. All she keeps saying is she doesn't need them and I don't know how to tell her this is what she needs. She's driving me crazy."

"Oh Ashton." Ari laughed. "Yeah, glasses was probably not a good idea. She hates wearing glasses."

"So she's worn them before?"

"Yeah. She had to wear them in elementary school but some kids picked on her so she never wore them again. Said she didn't need them anymore and that she was fine."

"Why does she not do things that could help her, I will never understand?" I sighed.

"Ashton, have you noticed that Carter tends to deny things, like a lot? She denies needing glasses, she denies being sick, she denies her feelings, she denies the letter, she denied the fact that her parents died for a long time, she still hasn't even taken out their life insurance policy; that's just who she is."

"Wait what?" I paused. "She never took out their life insurance policy?"

"Nope. She said she couldn't. It was fifty grand too, her and Ender would have been set, but she never did it."

"You've gotta be freaking kidding me."

"Nope. She would even say it was in someone else's name but we never believed her. She insisted that she couldn't take it out but she was just in denial. I think her taking out that policy would mean to her that they were really gone and she didn't want to do that."

I sighed.

"Just tell her to get over it. She'll be fine." Ari said. "Or just talk to her about it. You seem to be the one she can open up to the most, maybe she will tell you why she does what she does?"

"Yeah. I'll try. Thanks Ari."

I hung up the phone before going back into the room.

"Can we talk in here for a few minutes?" I motioned for Carter to follow me into our empty bedroom.

She sat down in the bed and I closed the door.

"Okay. I love you, but enough with the glasses thing. I know you don't like them, I get it, but you need them."

She huffed an annoyed sigh.

"Carter why do you have to deny every single thing that could possibly be good for you?" I asked her, my arms crossed.

"I don't know what you're talking about." She looked away from me.

"Yes you do. You deny the glasses, you deny it when you're sick, you deny it when you're upset, you didn't even take out your parents life insurance policy for crying out loud."

"How do you know about that?" She suddenly turned back to face me, her tone and expression darker.

"Why did you never take it out?" I asked, ignoring her question.

"I said how do you know about that?" She raised her voice a little more.

"I doesn't matter, why did you not take it out? You could have saved you and Ender so much pain."

"It's none of your damn business." She bit, obviously pissed off.

"I think it is."

"It's not in my name." She flung back.

"Then who's name is it in?"

"I don't know!"

"Carter-"

"No! I don't have to discuss this with you." She stood up and stormed out of the room.

"Carter, just tell me." I followed her.

"Just drop it Ashton!" She turned and glared at me before grabbing her phone from the coffee table and walking to the door.

"Where are you going?" I called after her.

"Out!" She shouted at me before slamming the door shut behind her.

I sighed.

"What happened?" Ender ran up to me, looking distraught.

"Don't worry about it." I patted his shoulder.

"But you're fighting." His voice broke and I looked to see him on the verge of tears, this obviously very upsetting to him after what had happened yesterday.

"It's okay bud, come here." I pulled him into a hug.

"Where did she go?" He cried into my stomach where his face was pressed against my shirt.

"She just needs to let off some steam. She'll be back, it's okay. I'm sorry, we didn't mean to upset you." I kissed his hair, trying to make him feel better even though I felt like hell.

I had screwed up...again.

Hmmm...I wonder what Carter is hiding ;)

Will she tell Ashton and if she does will it only lead to more fighting?
