Hidden in Plain Sight
"Reveal yourself!" His muscles contorted to look like a man who would be capable of killing me. Never more in my life have I wanted a teacher to look at me. His hands released me, and I fell backward.
"You did it. You made me visible." My throat throbbed, I felt where his hand had been the moment before, and my stomach felt like it was close to ripping again.
"I didn't do anything; that was you." He walked behind his desk to the small refrigerator and pulled out an ice pack. "how did you turn invisible in the first place?"
"I found one of the kids, but he saw me. I hid in an empty room, and when he looked, he was right in front of me. I thought I was caught, but he looked right through me because I was invisible."
"That should prove a useful skill if you figure out how it works." I shrugged and noticed my cloak was in cloak form again.
"Magic needs to be specific, right? So, if I say leather jacket, would that be specific enough?"
"As long as you picture it clearly."
"I closed my eyes and concentrated on that leather jacket I was wearing earlier. The weight on my shoulders changed back to the jacket. "So, I did that. I made myself disappear, and I changed this into the jacket again."
"It would seem so," he nodded at me, acknowledging that he was impressed, at least a little.
"Let me try something'. I thought about the cloak, but I didn't close my eyes this time. The coat shimmered with shadows, and it turned into a black ribbon tied in a bow, holding up my hair
"So, you went with ribbon. Well, I guess that is one way to wear the mystical shadow cloak necessary for your continuing existence.
"It is still on me, so I should be safe from the angel of death, right?"
"Theoretically, yes, but there is only the fact that he hasn't got you as reassurance."
"Okay then, on that note, I'll go home now."
"That is a good idea, and remember, find the decedent. Put your paste on and be here tomorrow morning at the same time as you were today". I walked home that day because even with all its follies I did magic alone. I found one of the kids I was looking for and wasn't dead, even though it was supposed to be. If anyone doesn't believe me, they can look at the scars forming on my abdomen as proof. Even magic can't save me from disfiguring scars. The next morning, when I put the paste on, I saw that the jar was almost empty, and I was almost healed. At school, Mr. Fisher was trying to teach me levitation. He levitated the desk that he was sitting on to show how easy this was as I could move a pencil.
"This is hopeless I am not moving the pencil."
"This is simple magic 'levitate'". His computer and his coffee floated up into the air with him. the coffee poured in his mouth he didn't even need his hands.
"Levitate," the pencil sat stationary, "Levitate," it jumped and fell again.
"This is not that hard. If you want to help them save the world, you must be able to use everything at your disposal. Right now, your toolbox is empty."
"Levitate!" The pencil flew into the air and lodged itself into Mr. Fisher's coffee, which he dropped as soon as it started leaking.
"So, you respond to reactionary teaching." the pencil rose from the puddle out of the cup and into the air. "Fly," the pencil hurdled at me quickly.
"Stop!" I dove to the ground to avoid a pencil in my brain. When I looked up, it was floating in the air, stationary.
"That is definitely reactionary magic. The problem with them is that they don't have the motivation to learn the spells without the provocation."
"So, you're saying I can't learn magic?"
"No, I'm saying much like in English class you won't learn anything until you find the motivation to try". there was a knock at the door before it opened, I snatched the pencil out of the air and pulled up my hood whispering disappear. Kevin the acting god of the school came in just as the objects landed in place. Kevin saw the mess of the coffee but didn't ask.
"Um... Mr. Fisher, I came in to ask about that essay. You assigned it when I was absent, so I didn't get the paper for the essay."
"I'll get that for you." Kevin looked around for a moment, and his eyes settled on me. I was afraid that I hadn't disappeared when I looked down; I was gone. Kevin's eyes glowed yellow for just a second before Mr. Fisher handed him the paper.
"Was there someone in here when I walked in?" Kevin asked
"No, I just spilled my coffee." Mr. Fisher didn't even look over at me, so he is a good liar. Kevin glanced again at where I was sitting.
"See you in class". Kevin left with a last glance at the coffee cup on the floor. I pulled my hood down and whispered 'appear' coming back into sight.
"He could see me,". I said
"You were invisible. He couldn't have."
"His eyes glowed yellow when he looked in my direction, and he only asked if someone was in hereafter."
"Well, if you think he saw you, that would have to be magic."
"I'm going to follow him." I grabbed my bag and left.
