Chapter Seventeen

"Will you stop fidgeting?"

Sabrina stopped bouncing her good leg and brought her hand up to her mouth, biting her nails. They'd been driving for about fifteen minutes and that was the third time Chris had asked her to stop.

"I'm sorry," She mumbles, looking out her window.

Chris sighed softly as he looked at his girlfriend. She was nervous, he could tell, but what was it she was nervous about? He was the one meeting her family. They loved her. What would they think of him? He remembered her comment about her dad shooting him. If anyone should be nervous, it was him.

When she had woken up that morning, Sabrina was excited. She couldn't wait to get to Pineville and see her family. She couldn't stop talking about them as she got ready. Once she got in the car, however, her mood quickly changed. She kept quiet and looked out the window, biting her nails or bouncing her leg up and down.

It was quiet for a few more minutes. Chris drove, but when they missed their turn, she frowned. The GPS began spewing new directions.

Sabrina looked at him. "You were supposed to turn back there."

Chris didn't say anything. He pulled to the side of the road and stopped, putting the car in park.

"What's wrong?" He asks, looking at her.

"I just..." She sighs. "What if they end up not liking you?"

"They'll just have to suck it up because I'm not going anywhere." Sabrina's lips quirked up a bit. "I promise, no matter what happens, I won't leave you. If your dad shoots me, well, that would suck, but I'll still love you. Okay?"

Sabrina rolls her eyes and sighs. "Okay..."

"Now smile," He says. "This will all be over before you know it."

Chris turned the car around and he drove to Sabrina's house, which was only a few minutes away from where he had stopped.

They pulled into the driveway. Snow covered everything and there were footprints that went all around the house. There was a poorly made snowman in the front yard.

Sabrina grinned. "My cousins are here."

Before he could respond, she opened the car door and got out. Chris rolled his eyes and smiled. He turned off the car and got out himself. Sabrina was already standing by the snowman by the time he shut the door. He walked up to her.

She shoved her hands into her pockets. "Be good, okay?"

He raises his eyebrows. "Me be good? I'm not the one with a mouth like a sailor."

Sabrina rolls her eyes and sticks her tongue out at him. She quickly walks to the front door, and Chris follows her. They stop in front of the door.

"Are you ready?" Sabrina asks.

"Of course," He says, smiling.

She grabbed his hand and squeezed it. He expected her to knock, but she just opened the door and dragged him into the house.

It smelled like chocolate chip cookies and hot chocolate. The door opened into a foyer, which eventually led into the living room. Connected to the living room, and separated by an island, was the kitchen. A woman and three children were in the kitchen, while a man sat in the living room.

"Autumn!" One of the kids yelled.

"Austin, no yelling in the house," The woman scolds, but the boy ignores her.

The boy - Austin, Chris assumed - hopped off the stool he was sitting on and ran toward Sabrina. It looked like he was going to crash into her, but he stopped when he saw the cast and crutches.

"What happened to your leg?" He asks, frowning.

"I fell off a ladder," She says, proudly.

Austin grins. "Awesome!"

"Austin, come finish your hot chocolate," The woman in the kitchen says.

He sighs. "Yes, Aunt Mary..."

He walks back into the kitchen, frowning. Sabrina and Chris follow him in there.

"Are you not going to say hi to your favorite old man?" The man in the living room asks, smirking.

Sabrina smirks. "I don't know. You didn't say hit to me."

"I was waiting for you," He says.

Sabrina rolls her eyes and walks over to him. "Hi, Dad. How have you been?"

"Oh, you know," He says. "Old."

Sabrina laughs. "You're not old, Dad."

"What am I, then?"

"Not young."

He chuckles. "You're becoming more of a smartass each time I see you."

"John!" Mary exclaims. "Watch your language! The kids can hear you!"

"They're going to learn it someday," John says. "Might as well start teaching them when they're young."

Mary rolls her eyes. "Autumn, when are you going to introduce us to your boyfriend?"

Sabrina walks over to Chris. "Everyone, this is Chris. He's my boyfriend. He's really awesome, which means you need to treat him like he's awesome."

Austin looked up from his drink and grinned. "Like the Miz!"

"Except better," Chris says.

Sabrina held her breath as Austin sat and thought about what Chris said. Finally, he looked at the man.

"I like you."

Sabrina sighed, then grinned. "Good. If you didn't like him, I wasn't going to come over anymore."

"What?" Austin frowns. "Why?"

"Because I'd want to bring Chris with me," She says. "And I need your approval before I can start bringing him to family things."

Austin laughs. "No you don't. I'm only nine! You don't need my approval!"

"I don't want to make my favorite cousin angry, do I?" She asks.

"Hey!" Another boy says. He was sitting next to Austin and had been staring intently at his hot chocolate, but quickly looked up when he learned he wasn't the favorite. His red hair was in his face, and his cheeks had freckles splattered across them.

"Oh, c'mon, Jackson. You know I love you both," Sabrina adds quickly. She leans toward him and loudly whispers, "Between you and me, I just want him to do what I say."

"Hey!" Austin now says, giggling. "I can hear you!"

"Well, you weren't meant to!" Sabrina shoots back.

"What if I end up not liking him?" Jackson asks, suddenly.

"Why don't you talk to him?" She asks. "I'm sure you'll like him."

Jackson hops off his stool and motions for Chris to come toward him, so Chris walks over to him. He squats down so he's eye level with the ten-year-old.

"So your name is Jackson?" Chris asks.

"Yep."

"Well, my name is Chris," The man says, sticking his hand out. "Nice to meet you."

Jackson looks at his hand for a second before shaking it.

"I was afraid you weren't going to shake it," Chris admits.

"Why?"

"Well, you just stood there and stared at my hand," He says. "It almost got awkward."

"I'm sorry..."

"Hey, it's okay," Chris says. "I said almost. You made the right decision."

Jackson smiles. "Good."

"Now on to the important stuff," Chris says. "Why don't you want me to date your cousin?"

"What if you're mean to her?" Jackson asks. "What if you're a bad man?"

"Do I look like a bad man?" Chris asks.

"Well, I guess not," Jackson says, shrugging. "But you could be pretending."

"While that could be true," Chris says. "It's not. I promise. I'm a very good person. At least, no one has told me that I'm bad."

"Oh."

"I'll be very gentle with Autumn, I promise," Chris says. "If I hurt her, I'll let you hit me."

Jackson's eyes widen. "Really?"

"Really," Chris says. "You get one free shot anywhere."

"I'm very strong." Jackson begins flexing. "See? You don't want to mess with Autumn."

"I sure don't," Chris says. "Look at those muscles! I don't want to get in your way when you're angry!"

Jackson grins and looks at Sabrina. "You'll tell me if he's mean to you, right?"

"Of course," Sabrina says, nodding. She looks at Chris and smirks. "Actually..."

"Don't make him hit me," Chris says.

Sabrina giggles. "Don't worry, I won't."

Jackson just grinned and sat back down, taking a sip of his hot chocolate. A third boy looked over, but didn't get up. He was significantly older than the other two.

"How come whenever I visit, Jackson and Austin are excited to see me, but all you do is sit there and do nothing?" Sabrina asks, jokingly.

The boy shrugs. "I don't know. It just happens."

Sabrina rolls her eyes and looks at Chris. "This is the cousin I've told you about."

The boy frowns. "What have you said about me?"

"Nothing bad," She assures him. "Just that you like wrestling." She looks at Chris. "Chris, this is Bryce. Bryce, this is - "

"Chris Jericho is my favorite wrestler," Bryce interrupts. "You think I need you to introduce me?"

Chris smiles. "I like this kid."

Bryce sighs, and Sabrina says, "He's fourteen - almost fifteen - years od. Don't call him a kid."

He looks at Bryce. "Sorry. Don't take it personally. I call everyone younger than me kid."

Bryce shrugs. "It's okay."

Sabrina sighs and crosses her arms. "I'm waiting for my hug."

"I don't do hugs."

"If I don't get my hug, Chris is seeing your pictures from your fifth grade dance."

Bryce quickly stands up. "Okay, okay."

He walks over and hugs Sabrina. He then walks back to his seat and sits down.

"I have to take these guys back to their mom's," Mary says. "Will you be in town tomorrow, Autumn?"

"I'm not leaving until Monday," Sabrina replies.

"Great!" Mary says. "I'll have their mom bring them over and we can have lunch together."

"Sounds good!"

Mary puts the boys' dishes in the sink, and Austin, Jackson, and Bryce follow her out of the kitchen. Once they're gone, Sabrina opens her mouth to speak, but the ringing of her phone stops her from saying anything.

"I'll be right back," She says.

Sabrina walks away, leaving Chris awkwardly waiting for her return. She finds her old room and walks in, shutting the door.

"Hello?" She answers.

"Hey, Sabrina!"

She smiles. "Hey, Phil. What's up?"

"Is it okay if I give your number to a friend of mine?" He asks.

"It depends," She says. "Who is it?"

Ignoring her question, he says, "I already gave him your number. I'm just calling to let you know he's about to call you. Okay, nice talking to you. Bye, Sabrina!"

Before she can respond, he hangs up. She sighs, but her phone starts ringing again, an unfamiliar number appearing on the screen.

"Hello?" She answers.

"Hi," The strangely familiar voice says. "Is this Sabrina Slater?"

"Is this Phil's friend?" She asks.

"I asked first," The man says, and she can practically hear the smirk on his face.

She sighs. "Yes. This is Sabrina Slater, WWE Superstar extraordinaire."

"Okay, good," He says. "I was making sure Phil gave me the right number."

"Who is this?" Sabrina asks.

"I'm Colt Cabana," He replies. "I host the podcast The Art of Wrestling and I was wondering if you'd like to be a guest."

"That's why you sound familiar!" She exclaims. "I've listened to a few of them. They're really good."

"Thank you," He says, proudly. "Would you like to be a guest?"

"I'd love to!" She answers.

"Great!" He says. "Can you come in on Wednesday?"

"Yeah, sure," Sabrina says.

"If you give me your email, I can get you my address and any other info you might want," He says.

Sabrina gives him her email address and he promises to send her an email in a few days. They say goodbye and she hangs up.

She heads back to the living room, where Chris and her dad are finishing up a conversation.

"What are you guys talking about?" Sabrina asks, sitting down next to Chris.

"Nothing important," John says. "Who was on the phone?"

"No one important," She replies, smirking.

He rolls his eyes. "I should've seen that coming."

"You should've seen that coming from a mile away," She says. "Do you need glasses, Dad?"

Before he can respond, the front door opens and Mary walks in.

"It's cold out there!" She exclaims. "I'm making hot chocolate. Would you guys like some?"

"Yes, please!"

"Sure, why not?"

"Yes, ma'am."

Mary gets to work making hot chocolate.

***

So I'm really uncreative and I named Sabrina's parents John and Mary after Dean and Sam Winchester's parents from Supernatural.  The good thing is, this John is a good dad.
