prologue

The best part of little Sang Sorenson's day was right after lunch. After lunch, after being mocked and yelled at by her sister and her mom, the little girl would slip out of the house silently. Not many noticed her, but the few that did, she would gift with a dazzling smile. Everyday she took the same route to the same place.

There was a beach that no one ever visited anymore. When Sang had found it, her little heart had broken for the beach, sad by the fact that no one paid it any attention anymore. It was still beautiful, the sand soft and sparkling white while the ocean shimmered underneath the sun. Sang had a big heart for a small body, and it was clear by the way she behaved. Anyone else who was berated constantly by her family would have grown to hate them, but Sang continued to love her family, even when they treated her like she was little more than a dog.

After she had discovered this beach, Sang came back everyday. She thought that at least someone should come around and visit it, that someone should experience it's ethereal beauty. Rarely ever did anyone notice her disappearance from the household at that time of day, which should have upset her that she was indisposable and invisible in her own household, but it didn't. Instead, she rejoiced at the fact that she got to visit her favorite place everyday.

There was one day though that when Sang arrived, she was startled to see that her haven had been infiltrated by two strangers. She paused near the overgrown grass that decorated the area where sand met dirt. She carefully made her way across the warm sand, something about the strangers drawing her in, fascinating her. All she could see of them were their backs, so she couldn't be quite sure of anything except that their physique resembled that of boys.

"Excuse me?" Sang called out as soon as she thought that she close enough to carry a conversation while also far enough away that if they were dangerous she could easily run.

The two boys jumped and turned to face her. She tilted her head, fascinated by what she saw. They were both rather tall, a lot taller than her, but that didn't say much; she was short for her age according to nearly everyone she knew. The boy to the left was slightly taller than the other boy, and he had black hair and an olive skin tone. His eyes were a dark brown and she watched as he scanned her over. She blushed a deep red and quickly looked away to assess the other boy.

She was startled by what she saw. His hair was a dark brown and his eyes matched his hair, though in their depths lurked sadness that Sang was familiar with due to the fact that she saw it when she looked in the mirror. She tilted her head, studying the bruise that spanned across the side of his face. He must have noticed where her attention was drawn, as his mouth drew down into a frown and he turned his head away.

Her eyebrows furrowed together and she pressed a finger to her bottom lip, looking between the two boys before her. They looked older than her, though she couldn't be sure. "I'm sorry to bother you," she said in Greek, her voice quiet, though it always was. "I'm not used to anyone being here. I've come here everyday and I've never seen you..."

The taller boy spoke up, responding in Greek as well. "It's okay. I didn't think anyone would come around. I used to come around here a lot, and no one ever visited it."

Sang frowned slightly, mulling over his words in her head. Someone used to admire her special place and now they were back; most likely he would want to claim it as his own again. Her heart sunk at the thought that she would no longer have a beautiful place to come visit when she needed to get away of the horror of her household. Her shoulders slumped forward in resignation.

"What's your name?" The boy with the scowl on his face asked. Sang hesitated, not sure how she felt about that boy yet. The tall boy she had decided seemed nice enough, but the other boy didn't seem so friendly. He must have noticed her hesitation because he offered up his own name, "I'm North. My friend here is Silas. We won't hurt you."

Sang softened up and she squirmed, the only thing to reveal her discomfort. "Sang," she whispered.

"Sang?" Silas inquired, his eyebrows shooting up. It was a peculiar but pretty name, and he wanted to make sure that he had heard her right. "Your name is Sang?"

She nodded, pushing her finger against her lip again, looking between the two boys. She found herself studying the bruise on the side of North's face again. She wasn't sure what overcame her, but she took a step forward, her hand fluttering up towards his face. He flinched and took a step back; Sang froze, her eyes widening. Their eyes locked and Sang suddenly recognized that look, that look of sheer terror before a parent punishes you.

"I'm sorry," Sang whispered, tears forming in her eyes. This time, when her fingers reached up to trace his bruise, he only tensed. "I'm so sorry."

It was then on that the three nurtured a friendship. Everyday, they would meet up at the corner of the street nearest to the beach then walk to it together. They only were allowed to spend a couple hours a day together, but it was enough for them. Sang was aware that Silas and North got to spend more time together than she got to spend time with them but she wasn't jealous and she didn't mind. Somehow, the two boys had become the most important people in her life, and she had become one of the most important people in their lives. She was their Sang Baby and Aggele mou. They were her North Star and Superman.

That day in particular, Sang arrived at the corner before the boys, something they never really liked. She didn't understand, but they tried to explain that the reason they hated it was because she could get hurt or someone could take her. It was mostly North who was so adamant about it, but she did her best to get him to stop worrying so much. She thought they were silly, and that she would be fine.

She thought wrong.

Silas and North were running late, and they knew it. They were trying to walk as fast as possible, both excited to see Sang but also worried that something would happen to her if they took too long. They knew that they were a little overprotective about it, but it was better to be safe than sorry. As they rounded the corner they froze, shock coursing through them.

Being pulled into a van, kicking and screaming, was their precious Sang.

"Sang!" They both shouted, shooting forward to help her, but it was too late.

The last they saw of Sang was wide green eyes full of a terror, and a hand reaching out for them.
