𝐢. summertime sadness

HAUNTED
୨⎯ chapter one ⎯୧

Bianca never wants to leave.

she loves this peace that she's holding. the waves of the ocean crashing with one another and her surf board doing exactly what she's telling it to do. bianca felt at peace as she surged through the waves. feeling every pint of sadness drown themselves in the ocean. with every drop she did, everytime the summertime sadness would drift away.

"bianca!"

she ignored her name being called by the boy that's been there for her even miles and miles always. bianca started getting angry. angry at herself. angry that instead of being there she was at a party with her friends. angry about the argument. angry with herself. blaming herself for everything.

"bianca!" conrad shouted even louder than last time. bianca turned her head over to him. he was distracting her causing the next wave to crash her down. bianca didn't have time to gasp for breath as she was roughly pushed out of her board and down to the deep and dark ocean. bianca debated in her mind to stay there until she reached the bottom. she would rather stay there.

it was quiet. everything went quiet. she couldn't see anything. it was only a battle between her and her mind. a battle that didn't involve conrad to swim down towards her and pull her back up to the surface.

"you're crazy, bianca! why the fuck would you just stay there!" conrad pulled bianca back to the sand and laid her down. it took bianca a few minutes to regain her couscous. she coughed out the water that was inside of her mouth but instead of sitting up and stayed laying down staring at the free sky. "god, bianca."

"hi, conrad." bianca whispered closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. conrad stood up and stuck his hand out for her to grab. bianca sat up sighing deeply and putting her hand on top of his letting him help her up.

"i think belly and steven are here." conrad said throwing his arm around bianca who leaned into him and crossed her arms. "hey, you still have that crush on steven?"

bianca groaned and pushed conrad away from her. "i told you that with trust four years ago!"

"and every year i ask you. although last year you didn't answer me." conrad said with a laugh.

"because last year i wasn't focused on boys, you know that." bianca grumbled and this made conrad stop laughing and get closer to her. she suddenly felt guilty to bring it back up. "but we'll see when i see him." this made conrad smirk and throw back his arm around her.

bianca and conrad were closer than the others. probably because they got each other very well despite the small age gap between them. conrad and jeremiah are basically her brothers at this point, belly is the sister she wishes she had and steven is, well her best friend. leo is her brother but recently they've been distant from one another.

"well look who decided to show up." lena said as bianca and conrad rounded the house and entered through the side pathway. bianca and conrad drifted apart. conrad going over to belly and bianca walking over to the adults.

"hi, laurel." bianca smiled.

"hi, bianca. i would hug you but you're dripping wet." laurel said laughing a bit. bianca glanced down at herself and forgot that her entire body was still wet and her swimsuit were drenching. lena grabbed a towel that was hanging from her shoulder and handed it over to her daughter. once bianca wrapped the towel around her body laurel brought her into the hug. "you okay?"

"i'm okay." bianca whispered in her ear causing the older woman to run her hand up and down her back. even if she said she was okay everyone surrounding her can tell that she isn't. bianca melted down into laurels hug and pulled away once she felt it be too much for her.

"bianca!" belly shrieked and bianca put on a smile on her face, it wasn't a forced one. she can never force a smile around belly. she turned around and her smile dropped. belly looked different. a good different. she didn't have her braces anymore, she wasn't wearing her glasses and her body well, did what every girls body does.

"belly? shit belly, you look good." bianca gaped walking over to belly. the girl threw her arms around her best friend and bianca wrapped her arms around her upper body. bianca and belly rocked side to side as they stayed into the hug that they both longed for. "i've missed you so much."

"i've missed you more." belly said back. bianca would've cried right then and there if it wasn't for steven conklin.

"guys, i think it's time. for the billy flop!" steven said grinning evilly at belly and bianca. the four boys made this tradition when the girls turned 10 that they would all gang up and throw the two girls inside of the pool. conrad came up with the brilliant name of billy, bi from bianca and lly from belly.

"i'm too old for thi- shit, steven put me down!" bianca shrieked when steven wrapped his arms tightly around her waist picking her smaller figure up. jeremiah grabbed belly and conrad grabbed biancas legs while leo grabbed belly's. bianca and belly tried their best to break free from their hold but they got too strong over the years so the two girls sighed in defeat.

the boys counted to three before throwing bianca and belly inside of the pool. bianca held in her breath as she reached the bottom of the pool. she swam back up to the surface and gasped for air, belly seeming to have to the same idea.

"you asses! i broke my leg!" bianca gasped putting a hand over her chest and taking her hand out towards them for any of them to help her up. leo was going to correct her telling her that she didn't but steven hooked his hand with hers.

"shit really?" steven asked leaning forward to help her up.

"no." bianca laughed and pulled him inside of the pool. bianca held herself on the edge of the pool as steven swam up to the surface of the water glaring at bianca. "oops, my hand slipped.

"you're going to pay for that." steven snapped launching himself forward to bianca. the wayne girl started to pull herself out of the pool but steven wrapped his arm again around her waist and brought her back down to the water.

bianca wrapped her arms around his shoulder as they collided to the water roughly. steven held her close. she didn't know how close they were until they swam back up to the surface and their eyes opened. if bianca went a little bit closer their lips would've touched. bianca frowned her eyebrows at her own thoughts and pushed steven away.

"get off." bianca muttered swimming to the edge of the pool and climbing out of the pool. steven was left behind confused watching as the girl flipped her braids over her shoulder.

"hey, you okay?" conrad asked after climbing out of the pool as well.

"yes! i'm okay!" bianca snapped on accident. everyone's eyes were suddenly on her. "sorry," bianca sighed her entire tensing up, "im sorry. im okay. im just cold." she said coming up with a quick excuse. bianca didn't bother hearing them before she ran inside of the house and up to her shared room with belly.

she felt guilty. a huge wave of guilt ran past her body as she ran up the stairs to her bedroom. she was having fun. again. she shouldn't be having fun, she should be punished for having fun. bianca felt tears whelming inside of her eyes and a sob stuck in her throat. she shouldn't have started that argument with him. she shouldn't have snuck out to the party. she should've stayed. not argued back.

"bianca," she heard steven called out to her. bianca turned around to see that he was the only one going up the stairs, the others were still outside. bianca turned back around and continued her trip back to her room. "bianca, bianca wait!"

"leave me alone, steven." bianca muttered finally reaching her room and closing the door. bianca dropped to the edge of her bed, her elbows on her knees and she dropped down her head to her hands.

steven seemed to not care about the rule that he wasn't allowed inside of the room and just burst through the room. steven was shocked to see how big the girls room was and that they didn't have twin beds but normal size beds since room was big enough to have good enough space between them. bianca looked up and saw steven looking at her vinyls.

"steven did you not hear me?" bianca scoffed crossing her arms on top of her lap and keeping her eye on steven as he continued to snoop around her side of the room rather than on his own sisters side. "steven seriously. don't touch that!"

"this? why? is it like a secret stuff? girl stuff." steven said in a singly voice and held the pink box that had stickers of pink stuff all around it. "like butterflies and glitter? are there unicorns in here?"

"no, it's an entrance to narnia." bianca said standing up and making her way over to steven and snatching the box away and putting it back on her shelf. "stop touching." bianca took this opportunity to grab a new set of clothes.

"i'm not going to ask you." steven said but bianca ignored him. "but you can talk to me, bee." that stupid stupid nickname that made her start having that silly crush on him. bianca ignored the way that it made her stomach still have butterflies and continued to grab a new dry pair of everything. "i can listen you know. i have ears."

steven sat down on her bed and leaned back. bianca turned around with her clothes in her arms and squinted her eyes at him. "what do you want me to say? there's nothing to talk about. my dad died. cancer is a bitch and i have to continue living my life, right? isn't that what everyone tells me. everyone telling me what to feel, if i'm okay, that it'll get better." bianca mentally cussed at herself knowing that she couldn't not talk with steven.

bianca threw her head back and went over to the bed and sat down next to him looking at the vanity in front of her. "i'm perfectly capable of doing okay. people need to stop asking." steven leaned forward on his knees and looked directly at her. bianca sighed deeply and dropped her gaze to her lap starting to fidget with her hands.

"i just need people to understand that what i'm feeling takes time to heal. my mind still needs time to heal, my heart hasn't healed. but no one seems to give me time to heal properly. they thought that after a month i would've been over it. which is so stupid because who would ever get over their dads death that fast." bianca said starting to pick on the cuticles of her thumb slowly starting to make the skin come off and make her bleed.

steven glanced down at her hands and then back up at her face. she wasn't crying. her face was hardened and her eyes were too lost within herself. steven reached his left hand to her and grabbed her hands stopping them from bleeding completely. he didn't say anything. he didn't have to say anything to comfort bianca.

steven sat straight and switched his left hand with his right and threw his left arm around bianca and brought her body to his. bianca let her body fall gracefully down to his side and sighed deeply at the comforting feeling that she felt. his hand was warming her cold hands up and the heat of his body was radiating onto her.

"hey, hey, hey! get off my sister! she's naked!" leo barged inside after peeking through the tiny crack that steven left. steven broke apart from bianca quickly and bianca stood up rolling her eyes at leo. "steven what the fuck. and bianca go change."

"i will change when i want to change." bianca deadpanned at her older brother.

"bianca you are wearing a bikini, you're wet and this boy is here with you while your practically naked." he said sternly.

"this boy is steven. stop talking like your-"

"don't say that." leo snapped shutting bianca up. "don't you dare fucking continue your sentence bianca. i'm just looking out for you."

"then stop! you don't need to! he's steven for gods sake, we've know him since we were kids! and plus," bianca looked from leo over to steven who was giving leo a glare. "i would rather get stung by a jellyfish again than do anything with steven."

"just get changed and steven." leo said pointing his arm out and steven walked like a puppy that just got hurt. leo gave bianca a tight smile before closing the door and leaving her alone. bianca went inside of her bathroom and changed out of her swimsuit and into her new clothes.

she hopes that this summer would be her time to heal.
