31. Siren
"Okay that sounds tempting as fuck but I am not going to look your way you enchanting fucker."
____________

Jack nearly shit himself when he heard the soft voice coming from the cove behind him. He was fishing, waiting for his brother, who should be here in about thirty minutes, and the voice started to speak up, echoing across the walls of the cave behind him. Jack knew what his brother sounded like and that was not it, thinking it was probably just a homeless man or something.

But his curiosity grew as he discovered the voice sounded angelic, luring him into the cave like a moth to a flame in seconds. The words he couldn't make out; stumbling over jagged rocks inside the cave. On the other side was light, the sound of water crashing into rocks on the other side. He stepped out of the cave and found a secluded beach, clean and beautiful. It was odd, really, giving off the too-perfect vibe, and Jack almost turned around to go back, but then he spotted something that caught his eye.

Immediately Jack looked away, shielding his eyes, mentally hitting himself for being so stupid. There was a siren propped up on a rockier part of the beach, presumably looking at Jack, but as soon as he saw that tail he looked away.

"Kiss me on the mouth and set me free." The siren sang heartedly, sloshing around in the water. "Sing me like a choir. I can be the subject of your dreams. Sickening desire, don't you want to see a man up close? A phoenix in the fire. So kiss me on the mouth and set me free, but please don't bite." Jack covered his ears, hearing horror stories told by sailors of sirens bouncing around in his head. They sing to lure you in! He remembers one of them saying, My boy, never listen to the songs of a siren, and never look at them, because they're just dying to take a bite of whatever comes their way.

"Okay that sounds tempting as fuck but I am not going to look your way you enchanting fucker." Jack said, trying to sound harsh but it coming out more nervous than anything. He's never seen a siren before, only pictures, but most were not good because everyone knew you should never look at a siren. Was he supposed to even speak to it?

"I'm an 'enchanting fucker'? Well, at least I'm enchanting." The siren replied, and holy fuck do all sirens sound like heaven? "If you're not going to look at me and be all dramatic about it then leave, but please don't send anyone over here. My days been shitty enough already." The siren acted awfully human like, making Jack put down his arm and quickly glance at it. All he saw was a blur of red hair, quickly looking away again.

"I don't trust you. You eat people."

"I only eat the sailors who try to put a harpoon through me. Ask the little girl with the red had and braids, she saw me earlier today and I didn't eat her. I can survive off of other things, y'know." The siren stated, and Jack could hear the splashing of water. "I only lured you hear because I was lonely. It's not like I am still. My names Mark by the way." The siren said, and out of the corner of his eye Jack could see him dip down into the water and surface again.

"I'm Jack." He didn't really know why he still felt the temptation of getting to know the siren, so he decided to man up and get a better look at the siren. He was well muscled and toned, tan, and looked kind of hot, which Jack had a hard time admitting to himself. "Do you know any other songs?"

The question seemed to throw the siren through a loop, confusion marking his face before his mouth twitched up into a smile. "Quite a few, actually. But my most used one is the one I was singing a minute ago, since it was the song I was given as a child." Mark replied, cocking his head to the side a little and stirring in the water a little.

"Why are you here anyways? Don't you, like, try to avoid people if you're not going to kill them?" Jack asked, walking closer and sinking further into his hoodie, feeling slightly intimated as he sat on a rock around six feet around from the siren, which clearly made him happy that he wasn't acting like he was a killer.

"Precisely. I've come to dread home; I am to be married next month to a man who only picked me based off of looks and vocals."

"Picked?"

"He's the heir to the throne, therefor he gets to pick his lover. I'm trying to figure out a way to get further away from him without drying up like a pathetic sponge on the side of the road." Mark shared, crossing his arms and resting his head on them with a sigh. Oh fuck, Jack thought to himself, the siren is actually hot.

"What's so bad about marrying him? I mean, doesn't that kind of mean you're royalty?"

"I'm into the lovey-dovey sappy shit, so I'd like to actually love and know someone before I enter marriage with them." Mark said, tracing something in the sand that appeared to be gibberish, weird signs and synbols that Jack hand never seen before. He figured it was either just random doodles or something sirens used; he had never really been interested in sirens until now, so he didn't know common knowledge on sirens, except the obvious dangers.

"What about a lake? Couldn't you just go there, since it's cut off from the ocean?"

"Jack, I have no legs and die within a minute outside of water. How the hell am I supposed to get to a lake?" Mark said sarcastically, gesturing towards his lower half, which Jack could see was mostly different shades of red, and a little bit of black.

"I dunno, clearly you talk to people, and you can fucking hypnotize people, so it'd be easy."

"I'm a siren, not a witch. I can only make people come to me and basically kill themselves over the rocks, but that's really about it, and the only person who talks to me is a seven year old girl, and she can't exactly help me with anything that isn't just procrastinating." Mark said, looking up at Jack and wow, okay, that's definitely and image that's never going to leave his head. Siren or not, you had to admit he was hot

"I can help, but I'll have to borrow my brother's truck, since my crappy car barley fits short me." Jack suggested, wondering if he will regret this moment if Mark killed him, but what the hell could go wrong? Offering a siren assistance would put you in better terms with them, making them want to kill you less, right? Mark opened his mouth to say something, a bright smile on his face, but someone cut him off.

"Sean! Sean?! Where are you? You left your phone behind, it'd be nice if you'd respond to my messages once in a while!" Jack's brother called, and Mark raised an eyebrow.

"Sean?" Mark asked, an unimpressed look on his face.

"Everyone calls me Jack, it's a long story. We can talk about this later, yeah?"

"Yeah, sure, but I stay out no later than five." Mark sank into the water and swam away, shooting through the water with skill, and Jack pondered how in the hell this was ever going to work.

(Sorry this was supposed to go up on Halloween but I ran into compilations.)
