THE OUTER BANKS WAS ALWAYS CONSIDERED HOME TO JULIETTE LIU—a place that was full of luminous sunsets, salty breezes, and a warmth that would bring her constant comfort. However, that was before her father's new job uprooted her to Boston, forcing her to leave behind the life she only ever knew. Two years later though, Juliette and her family moved back to Kildare County as her father decided to take back his old job. She was ecstatic knowing that she would see her childhood friends again, but unfortunately, that was not the case. Rather than being faced with euphoria, she was faced with devastation and grief.

Her first-ever girl best friend, Sarah Cameron, was dead.

Juliette had grown up with Sarah, they were practically sisters. So upon hearing the agonizing news, she felt like a piece of her soul had died. But it wasn't just Sarah who was dead, it was also a Pogue named John B Routledge, a boy that Juliette knew very well. Before Sarah, there was John B. Juliette and John B were the bestest of best friends along with a fellow Pogue named JJ Maybank. The three of them were inseparable, but when Juliette's family slowly started to get more financially stable and her family moved to Figure Eight, their bond broke and the two boys never talked to her again.

Juliette believed that the death of Sarah and John B was a bit wary which left her suffocated with unanswered questions. As her despair and skepticism grew, Juliette found herself pulled along with her ex-best friend JJ Maybank and two of his friends, Pope Heyward and Kiara Carrera into a dangerous chase of obtaining gold from the Royal Merchant, specifically the Cross of Santo Domingo.

In the midst of this, Juliette becomes inexplicably lured in by the last person that she should trust, the devil himself, Rafe Cameron. Destructive and erratic, Rafe is the epitome of everything that she should flee away from. But behind his callous demeanor and sins, Juliette sees the brokenness that feels all too familiar and is harbored inside of him.

Rafe Cameron, plagued by his demons, can't seem to drive himself away from Juliette. She was the only person who ever truly believed in him, and the only person who ventured to look past his reputation and see the man that he was trying to become. But, he couldn't go after her, being Sarah's best friend, she was off-limits, for god's sake!

         Rafe considered Juliette to be the sun, the light that you could look towards whenever you feel yourself drowning in a pit of gloom. He couldn't taint her soul with the devil that lived within him. He feared that the darkness that consumed him would devour her as well because she was too pure for him, too good for him.

But as the chase progressed, their connection became too indisputable for them to ignore it. Sparks ignited from their souls just by a mere touch and there was absolutely nothing they could do to rid themselves of each other—they were undeniably woven together by an indestructible red string. Juliette prayed to not fall for Rafe as it would be far too disastrous and risky, but unfortunately, no one ever gets what they want, and in the Outer Banks—no secret can stay buried forever.

And love is the deadliest gamble of them all.
