Chapter 7: The Beginning of the Adventure
Ember's POV
"Do you like it?" I asked showing Thayne the bed area I had prepared, I was excited and really hoped he liked it. Luckily he nodded.
"Its... Wow, it's amazing! Thank you!" He said, turning to me. I was overjoyed and smiled at him.
"Glad you like it!" I said, suddenly feigning seriousness. "Um, so, I have a question" I said, sitting cross legged on the floor and he sat on the bed.
"Okay, what's your question?"
I smiled again and asked "So, are you gonna eat with us, or are you still gonna eat slop?"
"Oh, haha, very funny," he said sarcastically, before answering "I will eat with you guys"
Yay! I still couldn't believe he had only ever eaten something called slop. I realized Thayne's master had been, well, okay to Thayne obviously, if he was sad about his death, but I hadn't gotten to know him so, I still didn't know what to think about him.
My mom called me before I could respond and I jumped up. "Come on Thayne! Let's go" I called and he stood also.
We ran upstairs and mom greeted us.
"Ah, you must be Thayne. I heard about what happened, I'm really sorry. If there's anything more we can do to help let us know, okay?" She said, offering Thayne a small smile.
"Thank you ma'am, but I will move out as soon as possible, I don't want to intrude," he said, I was about to protest, but I noticed a little girl watching us from the window. She didn't look like she was from this time period, with her white dress that honestly looked like a Roman dress from way back in time.
I saw a small glow around her neck which grasped my attention and decided I had to find out about this girl watching us. I slipped outside.
"Hello?" I said once I shut the back door.
"Hello!" She called merrily with a wave.
"Who are you?"
"My name's Martha. I'm, not from this time period."
"How is that possible? Where are you from then?"
"I'm from Pompeii, before it, uh, yeah..."
"I don't know about Pompeii, I really don't remember a lot of history. I'm sure I learned about it, but it was kinda, in one ear and out the other."
"Ah, okay. Question: do you want to go on an adventure?" She asked, and right then Thayne came outside.
"What are you guys-"
"Hey Thayne!" I called, interrupting him.
"Hello." Martha said, waving at him.
"Hi, what are you girls doing?"
"Well, Martha offered to take me on a adventure..." I said, suddenly thinking of I would even want to go. What if Thayne can't come? I wanted adventure, but I also wanted to stay with Thayne.
As if sensing my thoughts Martha assured me. "Your friend can come too."
"What? No, it could be dangerous Ember! Neither of us are going."
"But Thayne!"
"It's not dangerous, it'll be fun. It's honestly just going through time, I do it all the time."
"It's not dangerous at all?" He questioned, and she nodded, I thought perhaps a bit hesitantly, but shrugged it off.
"Mmn, fine. But Ember better not get hurt!"
"I think I can handle it, I mean I just saved you from a fire."
Thayne rolled his eyes but we decided to start the adventure.
"So, there's a cave a little bit away from here. Now, how do we get out of your yard?"
"How did you get into the yard?" I asked and she shrugged. Wow. "You don't even know?" She nodded sheepishly and me and Thayne sighed. "Well, I usually climb over the fence using the tree." I said, pointing at the tree.
"Oh, okay, let's go!" She said. We went over the tree and she started to climb it, seeming to have a bit of trouble. Thayne scoffed at her, and I offered to help.
"No, I got it," she said, finally pulling herself into the branch and then murmuring, seemingly to herself, "you guys are seriously so weak. Back in Pompeii we had to do everything ourselves."
"Didn't Pompeii get destroyed by a volcanic eruption? Years ago?" Thayne asked smugly. He needed to stop being rude. It was starting to frustrate me.
Martha rolled her eyes. "Yes, but before that. We couldn't do anything about that."
"Guys, just stop. Thayne, you next."
"No, you first." He said nodding at the branch. I was tired of the fighting so I climbed onto the branch with ease. Martha started making her way to the end of the branch, but not to the point it would break because of the weight, and it was near enough to the ground for her to jump down.
Thayne started climbing onto the branch and I followed Martha. Once everyone was on the ground, Martha started to lead us to the cave. Every time a squabble arouse I stopped it as soon as possible.
When we got to the cave I looked at it strangely. It wasn't so much the cave as it was the fact I had been here before, in fact it was one of my favorite places to get away with Slush, and never seen it although it was in plain sight.
Again it was almost as if Martha sensed my thoughts, because she looked at me and said, "You are only able to see the cave if you know about it, or else have the power to travel through time without a time-line interval. This cave is a time-line interval, and even if you can time travel without being in or by it, which is a power few people have, you still appear out of the cave. In fact, there was a time-line interval place right by the blacksmith shop."
I was able to understand what she said, only just though, as it was rather confusing.
"Got it. So, we ready to go in?" Thayne asked, and I looked at the group, realizing we didn't have anything needed for going through a cave.
"Shouldn't we have food, and rope? And Martha is only wearing sandals..." I pointed out and Martha nodded.
"Uh, yeah, where would we get those supplies? Are there any vendors or..?"
"The store probably"
"I'll stay here." Thayne said and Martha and I nodded, heading to the store.
"So, do you have any money? I only have these coins and I'm not sure if they are worth anything anymore." She said holding out a handful of old coins in copper, silver and gold.
"That stuff is valuable still, but it's not commonly used anymore. I have my wallet, I'll buy what we need." I said. My parents maybe had a normal sized house, but we were actually rather rich. My dad was a traveling musician who was actually rather popular, and my mom had a modest job, but good wages.
I almost never saw my dad though, and I wished he could be home more often.
We arrived at the store and first we found nice, sturdy shoes for Martha. Then I went to the hardware isle for rope and Martha left to look for food.
I was excited for the adventure, how fun would it be to travel through time?
Martha's POV
I looked through the food. I didn't understand any of the writing, it was all in some language I didn't know how to read. I only knew how to read Latin.
But I understood what Ember and Thayne said because strangely, when you time travel, you are just... Able to understand one another. I didn't understand how it worked really, and it wasn't important, what was important in time travel is to know how, and not mess with anything.
I didn't often follow that rule though.
I found a mixture of nuts and raisins. It looked good and like it wouldn't spoil quickly so I grabbed a few bags.
Ember turned into the isle with rope and a few other supplies in a red basket, including the shoes we had picked out for me. I had to admit, I was excited to put on the shoes.
"Ooh, trail mix! That's a good food for exploring. It also doesn't taste too bad. Especially with M&M's." She said, grabbing a bag that looked the same as the ones I had picked out, but with brightly colored circles too.
"Oh, so do I put these back for those?"
"Nah, we can get a few of both," she said grabbing a few more of her kind and placing it in the basket.
I put mine in the basket too and felt someone push past me rudely, stumbling back. "H-hey!" I sputtered looking up to see who it was. It was a boy and I... Recognized him?
"Who do you think you are!?" Ember asked him angrily.
"Someone who's more important than you!" He replied. Now I remember!
"Hey, I recognize you, uh, Chase, right? Remember me? I'm Martha from Pompeii!" I exclaimed, excited to see someone I recognize. But what happened next was... Unsavory.
