Chapter 36:: Promise

Author's POV:

"Oh my god... this..." Jo gasped, holding the chip in his hand.
"Y/N, greek god! How did you find this?!" He asked. You just stared at the photo frame and said, "It fell off my hands... and broke. That's when I saw this chip."
"You didn't get hurt, right?"
Taehyung asked. You shook your head as he looked at the photo frame.
"Too clumsy." He muttered under his breath as you scoffed.
"I found something, at least." You said. He shook his head. Jo quickly connected the chip to his laptop and started opening the files or whatever was in there.

You didn't understand a thing anyway.

"It's open." He said and opened something in the laptop.
You stared at the screen. Taehyung glanced at you before looking at the screen. It was a video.

You gasped seeing your father.
"D-Dad.." You called. It was him in the video. He was talking.

Your hands were shivering. But you felt a warm hand pressing against your shoulder. It was Taehyung. He barely touched you, but the warmth somehow calmed you down. It made you acknowledge that he was there—with you.

You gulped and stared at the screen,

'I don't know who might be seeing this... hopefully, the good ones. I want to say that this entire situation was caused by my very own friends, Lee Taereul and Kim Taewoo. I thought we 3 would have the same goals. We were in this great business but they decided to go astray. They tried to earn more money by illegal drug dealing and murders. Turned out, that they had chosen the profession of mafias. They were mixing up with gangsters and God knows what worse crimes they did. But as soon as I got to know about it, I kept evidence. Even though they're my very own friends, I support the exemplary. And I planned to expose them to the police but they were clever. I got caught and now they're threatening my life. I think I don't have any safe place now and I don't have time to go to the mine either. But maybe, if someone ever comes across this, even if it's my daughter, I hope you know that the mine is somewhere in Canada. The gold mine isn't actually a gold mine. It is a place in Canada where couples go for dates. It is somewhere in the east of the area, under the ground. If they get their hands on the evidence, the innocent people who were framed because of them will get caught. My family's life is in danger and I have to save them first. I really need to get justice.'

The video clip ended. You stared at the screen, tears streaming down your face. This heartbreak was too much to take.
Not only did he betray your father and choose the wrong way, but he also worked behind his death. You couldn't help but feel like a huge part of you broke. It was worse now, worse than before.
You felt Taehyung's hand rubbing your shoulders softly. You looked down, crying.

"Gold mine... isn't this place in this city? It's not that far from here. West of Gold mine. It would be the washroom. So, he hid the papers there, under the ground." Jo connected the dots and immediately noted them down on a piece of paper.
"We're not far away from getting the innocent people justice," Taehyung spoke. You were crying and had no energy to talk right now. What could you say? Your uncle whom you trusted just like your father had betrayed you.

"But... what if they got their hands on this before us? It would be a mess." Jo said. Taehyung shook his head and said, "He knew the bad ones wouldn't know about this easily."
"How?"
"An instinct. Hope... it's what keeps us going."
Taehyung spoke. You kept crying. A part of you wished to turn around and hug him, cry in his arms. But another part of you found the urge ridiculous and refrained you from doing that. That would be an impulsive action.

"I'll go for a bit." You said and walked towards the balcony. Jo sighed as Taehyung spoke, "Betrayal hurts more than you know. Because it brings regret which is the most painful emotion."
Jo looked down and said, "We have to go to the mine before tomorrow. They are probably on their way."
"Get things ready. We're leaving within 1 am."
Taehyung spoke, walking away. Jo nodded and started on his laptop.

—Time skip

You were standing on the balcony, staring at the beautiful moon. You wiped your tears quickly feeling a presence behind you. It kind of became obvious now. It was him. His scent lingered around you often and you were used to it—to him.

"Are you okay?" He asked. You chuckled bitterly, looking down.
"Do I look okay?"
"No."
He answered shortly. You sighed, tears leaving your eyes continuously.
"Why are you here?"
"To make sure you don't jump off the balcony."
"I wouldn't."
"I don't trust you."

"Hey-" You were about to protest but stopped, looking down.
"Fine, I won't even argue." You said. He smiled a little and said, "That's how I like you."
"What?"
"I like you being all feisty and ready to jump off the building. Not broken and sad. But I also hate you so it's okay if you act like that."
He said.
"You never make any sense."
"I don't want to either."

You sighed, looking down.
"It hurts..." You spoke, holding your chest. He stared at your hands before looking at the moon.
"I know."
"You don't know..."
"My father's name is Kim Taewoo."
He said. You were about to shrug it off but your eyes widened in realization. His father was also included in this whole mess. His father was your father's friend, one who conspired against your father. And Taehyung was fighting against his own father—for justice.

You looked at him, in disbelief.
"I grew up the way my father wanted to. He taught me how to be cold and dominant, how to be murderous. He taught me ways of torture and how to hold a gun at the age of 10 when other kids were enjoying being squished between their parents in photos." He said. You stared at him quietly.
"Maybe that's why it doesn't hurt me much. Because he never cared about me. He never once called me by my name. He always called me Kim. Only my mom taught me morals and how to differentiate between good and bad. That's why I knew he was wrong. Or everything else about me is just an imprint of him." He said as if he was disgusted by the facts. You saw his face hardened and his fingers gripping the rails of the balcony.

"He only cared about how I'd be as the carrier of the mafia dynasty. Not about his son. But I've always loved him. I thought he loved me too. Until he decided to kick me out because I supported my mother's decisions. He kicked his mother out too. Because we were the good ones and he didn't support the good. He's a wicked man." He said. You placed a hand on his. He looked at your hand before looking at you.
"I don't care about him. He deserves to die. He deserves punishment. But, knowing that he's my father, a man my mother has loved... is sad." He said.

"You never tell me about yourself."
"You don't need to know."
"What happened to your mother?"
You asked. He looked at the moon and said, "She's in a beautiful place like there... somewhere she deserves to be."

You never heard him speak like this. He was indirectly telling you about his tragedy. You sighed and said, "With my parents, maybe?"
"Maybe."
He said.
"Then... we both hurt." You said. He nodded and said, "Now my father is ready to kill me to save himself from punishment. That dumbf*ck will regret it all."
"You cursed."
You gasped as he said, "He deserves it. You should too."
"I'm hurt."
You said.
"That's why you hate them. The ones who hurt you. Because they deserve it." He said.

"Once the evidence is found, they'll be punished, right?"
"Yeah."
"Are we going now?"
"Yeah."

You looked at him and said, "I might not want to say this but... you're a nice guy. Compared to your father."
"I'm no different than him. You said so yourself. I'm heartless and cold, and I really do not know morals. It's the truth. Don't mistake my work for my personality."
He said. You looked down and said, "Even though you're heartless and cold, you comforted me right now so I'll give you that."
He smiled a little and said, "Just keep on hating me. Don't pretend to like me now."
"I'm not. I've always hated you and nothing can change that. I hate you to the point I'd kill you if possible."
You said.

He nodded and said, "That's how I want it."
"But you look sad."
You said, staring into his deep brown eyes. He looked at you and then at your lips before looking away.
"I am not..."
"Okay."

You took a step towards him and wrapped your arms around his torso. You felt him stop moving. He was confused, you knew.

"Because we both are betrayed." You said.
"And we hate each other. So, we comfort each other. My mom said that comforting an enemy is a hundred times better than fighting with them. She was a saint too." You said, chuckling a little. Taehyung let out a soft airy breath which hit your temple. You closed your eyes, inhaling his scent as his large arms wrapped around your torso slowly.
"Because we hate each other." He said, more like convinced himself.

"We have it." You whispered. He nodded and sighed.

"They're on their way to Canada. They probably know we're here too... good if they don't. But we can't take risks." You nodded at his words, looking at him one more time. He looked at you, his eyes crinkled just a bit. It felt assuring as if he was ensuring you that it'd be alright.

"Why did it take so long to find the evidence?" You asked, a little dazed.
"Because we all knew that it was in Seoul so we were fighting there but turned out, it was here... in Canada."
You nodded, wondering about everything.
"Then, how do they know?"
"Maybe they've guessed or had some other sources. Anything is possible. Our goal right now is to gain the evidence from here and go back to Korea safely. You won't be safe in Canada."

You nodded, looking down.
"What about uncle? Will he save me?" You asked. He looked at you, his expressions becoming unreadable.
"Only God knows..." He said, looking down. You stepped back and said, "I don't want to go... I want to stay here a little longer."
"You won't have to. I'll let my guards be here. We'll take the evidence and we'll come here and pick you up. We still have some packing to do, if you help us..."
"Alright. I'll... do those then, fix the house I guess."
You nodded.

"But... if anything happens, call me." He said.
"I don't have your number."
He took out a card from his pocket, handing it to you. You looked at it and said, "Thanks."
"If anything happens, you have to call me. Just me, it's only me in here who will truly protect you. At least, until this, all ends."
He said. His voice had a tone of protectiveness. For a moment, you were distracted. The way his lips moved as his eyes stared down at you. The urge to hug him again and wish him luck, the strange worry for him arose in you. You were confused about why he felt so different right now.

Even until a few days ago, you were sure he and you were from two different dimensions but right now, you both were together in this. And you probably had the most ridiculous thoughts. But could you do a thing about them? Probably not.

He smiled at you, a genuine one.
"Good luck..." You said. He nodded and stared at you, hesitation evident in his face. He probably wanted to do or say something but restrained himself, turning around. As he was about to go inside, you said, "Find those... safely. I mean, I wouldn't want you to get hurt... my father wouldn't either. You know, I listen to my mom's ettiquettes. So, good luck." Your explanation wasn't needed at all. It was an unnecessary one. But you didn't want to sound like you were all friendly with him or anything and he understood.
"I won't. I'll be safe and I'll protect you. It's a promise."
