Chapter 31:: Hearts

Author's POV:

Sitting on the plane, you sighed. Looking beside you, you saw Taehyung scrolling his phone.
"How long will we be there?" You asked. He looked at you and then at his phone.
"3 days."
"Only 3 days?"
You asked.
"You didn't want to go there I thought."
"I didn't... but, is 3 days enough to find all evidence or whatever?"
You asked.
"It is."

It had been 8 days since the conversation with Taehyung. A conversation which gave you a different idea about him. That was the first time he said something about you in a tone which didn't depict hate. He sounded like he was explaining a characteristic of you by calling you 'smart'. You wondered if it was also a type of compliment which he gave you but again, those thoughts seemed ridiculous. So you shrugged them off.

Days went normal but you felt a different connection with him now. The hatred probably didn't even exist. He was nice now. After apologizing, he stopped saying anything rudely which he barely did anyway. You realized he wasn't as big of a jerk as you always portrayed him. Well, he was a mafia so he wasn't supposed to be all friendly but he wasn't as bad either. And you kind of appreciated it. Was it progress or regress? You had no idea.

And your hands weren't cuffed with his this time. Instead, they were captivated by his large ones.

Yes, he was holding your hand throughout the whole flight. You kind of found it annoying but at the same time, you felt a warm tingle spread across your hands and somewhere in your belly as his hands held yours. His touch wasn't a wrong one, he had no bad intentions. He held you in a delicate way, respecting that you wouldn't want to keep your hands with him.

But he also claimed not to trust you. Like- where would you even run off inside a plane?

"Are you sure you're not holding my hand because you just want to?" You asked. He looked at you once before looking back.
"No." He answered. But he sounded unsure himself. You saw his eyes wavering here and there making a frown appear on your face. Was he lying? He certainly was.
But you didn't protest. You just sat there wondering what was even happening.

Jo and Azure were on another seat, sleeping together and you were with him, again.

—Time skip

You sipped your unicorn frappe from Starbucks as Taehyung was eyeing your drink.
"That's more sugar than milk." He said. You frowned and said, "Stop. It's good unlike your bitter expresso with zero sugar. You're inhumane for liking that."
"I'm inhumane to you either way."
He whispered, more like to himself as you stared at his profile walking towards the counter to pay. Jo was drinking his cold coffee and Azure was with him. You gulped and wondered what this trip would bring.

You were nervous. It had been 15 years since you last came here. Your heartbeat was increasing with every passing moment though for some reason, being with them—or just one of them—always made your heartbeat raise. This moment was different. You felt anxious about the upcoming events.

Soon, Taehyung came back and you all were now in the car, on your way to your house.

—Time skip

Arriving in front of your house, you stood there, staring at the beautiful big house. Memories rushed into your mind as your palms started sweating. You gulped, feeling a tug in your heart. It was aching.
You gulped again and took in deep breaths. Jo was taking out the luggage while the chauffeur helped him. You stared at the beautiful windows and faint memories of days when you'd stare outside those windows flashed right in front of your eyes.

"This house will be the same lovely one... no matter whatever you find in there. It's not related to any of your happy memories or your family."

A deep voice rang in your ears bringing you back to reality. You looked beside you, in surprise. Taehyung looked at you with calm eyes as Azure was in his arms. You gulped and said, "What do you mean? I don't... care about those."
"Yeah. It'll be alright. Let's go inside."
He said, walking ahead. You stared at his back, holding your stomach due to the nervousness. Your tummy was feeling sick and all the unicorn frappe seemed to be oxidizing in your stomach, thanks to the anxiousness.

You walked in, taking small steps until you found yourself inside the house. It was just as beautiful as before. Just some dirt here and there and covered furniture. This house hadn't been visited in the past 15 years, after all.

You looked at Jo who spoke, "Ah... we might have to clean this house a bit."
"After cleaning, search thoroughly. Don't leave a single space of the house."
Taehyung's voice echoed in the room as you said, "Are you sure the house has whatever you're searching for?"
"It does. We found the evidence that it does."

You nodded and said, "I'll go upstairs..."
"Okay. But please come down soon, the house is going to get cleaned I guess."
Jo said. You went upstairs and entered the room which was on the right of the stairs. As you entered the room, sitting on the bed, a soft and sad smile appeared on your face. It was your bed, your room.

The same decoration, furniture, pictures... everything was the same. Just one thing was different now. The situation, the people, the emotions—may be more than one thing.

—Flashback

Taehyung looked at Jo and said, "I wonder where the evidence might be."
"From the hacked voicemail that we found from Mr Choi's phone... I think it should be somewhere we won't find it easily."
"I'm surprised honestly. I went to spy near Kim's mansion to search for Joel but instead, I found this chip. The man who gave it to me seemed elderly... he said that we were the ones who deserved it."
"I wonder who that man would be..."
Taehyung spoke, dazed.
"Me too, but he saved us, honestly."

Jo smiled, dusting off the dirt from the couch. Taehyung frowned a little and sighed.
"What if it's not just us who's going there?" Taehyung's question made Jo look up at him, confused.
"If they knew, they'd be already."
"Or maybe... they're on their way,"
Taehyung spoke. Jo gasped and said, "We need to hurry."
"We'll go there within 10 days. That's the earliest we can afford."
"Alright. But what about Ms Y/N?"
"She'll be convinced. After all, it's the answers that she needs... and the answers are there."

—End of Flashback

Taehyung looked at Jo and said, "The men are here to clean up."
"Find anything suspicious then report it to us,"
Jo said to the men who nodded and began cleaning. Taehyung looked at the stairs through which you went upstairs a while ago. It had been 15 minutes now.
"I'll go check up on her. Feed Azure and put her to sleep." Taehyung spoke, walking up the stairs as Jo nodded.

You were sitting in the room, staring at the locket which you left in this room years ago. You always missed this one. Your dad had gifted this to you on your 5th birthday and you always kept it with you. It was always on your neck.
You put it on, staring at yourself in the mirror. It was pretty dirty, it had to be cleaned.

A tear escaped your eyes as your heart ached. You remembered your parents, so much. This house only brought back those memories like they were ever fresh.

"I really... wish... you'd be here, mom and dad." You said, trying your best not to cry. Wiping the tears which had fallen from your eyes, you sighed. But as soon as you heard the sound of the door opening, you jolted, looking back. It was Taehyung, standing there.

"Are you okay?" He asked, leaning on the doorframe. You stared at him, gulping.
"Y-Yeah... I am." You said.
"You're a bigger liar than me." He said and nodded, looking at the room. He seemed to be examining the room, the furniture, the pictures and then you.
"The room's pretty." He spoke, looking at the pictures which were hung above the wall. Pictures of your family, your pets and some more of your childhood. He was analyzing them all like he was curious and intrigued. Like all this was new to him.

"Why are you gawking at my bedroom like this?" You asked, finding his stare quite bothering. He looked at you and said, "I've never seen a bedroom like this before..."
"What? This is the basic bedroom every kid has. Pictures of family, toys and bed... closets? What's new?"
You asked.
"I didn't." He spoke, looking at the small photo frame which had a picture of your family. Both of your parents were kissing both sides of your cheeks as you were grinning as a kid—a cliche yet cute family picture pose.

You looked at the tint of sadness in his eyes as he stared at your photos. He seemed to be engrossed in thinking. He looked pitiful right now. A weird feeling arose in you seeing him like this. You needed to ask him what he meant, and why he was looking sad. But you didn't, you just kept quiet and said, "Well... I guess that's good. I mean, as a kid, I hated being squished between my parent's kisses like that. Though I was grinning for the pose, my cheeks hurt after that."
He looked at you, his gaze holding yours. He didn't talk.

"You miss them though." He said, looking around. You looked down and said, "I mean, there's no one to squish my cheeks and make them hurt. It's normal to miss those who make you suffer a lot... because you don't suffer anymore."
"And those who love you a lot because... not everyone loves you in a way that makes you feel loved."
You said the line in a low voice, more like to yourself. He didn't talk, just walked towards you and said, "It's not just the ones who suffered and were loved who miss... the ones who loved them and made them suffer probably miss them even more."

"Because they won't have someone to love the way they loved you." He said and looked at the locket on your neck that you were holding. Looking right into your azure blue eyes, his lips quivered. As they always did.

As if he had a similar thought every time he looked into your eyes. Every other time, he'd have those icy brown eyes which made you shiver and gave you a feeling about how much he hated you and how much hate he deserved from you. But this time, like the recent other times—his stare wasn't cold or rude. He just stared at you calmly. Somehow, that simple stare sent a wave of comfort into your heart. His eyes softened seeing your eyes getting teary. A tear escaped your eyes as you kept staring at him.
But this time, you didn't hate him. Your stare didn't hold any hate for him. You just stared at him, knowing well that he was aware of how sad and broken you felt at the moment.

And knowing it somehow made you feel warm. Somehow, the fact that he knew what you were feeling and he was validating that, letting you feel all that and even trying to comfort you without saying anything was all reaching you—your heart. With the tears that left your eyes, you felt your hate for him falling down.

You felt your heart softening with every moment passing by. And his stare said that the same was happening to him. Just like you—his heart was also opening with every passing minute.

"Mr Ki-" You both jolted up hearing a voice. You looked at the door to see Jo standing there with confused eyes.
"Oh... Ms Y/N, are you alright?" He asked as you nodded, quickly wiping your tears.
"We're coming downstairs. Go for now." Taehyung said to Jo who nodded, walking away quickly. He sensed that the atmosphere wasn't that light.

Taehyung turned to you and said, "Come down when you feel okay. The men might come to clean this room in a while so it's better if you hurry up."

You watched him leave the room. A thought occurred to you, 'Was he comforting you just now? This rude guy?' Maybe he wasn't that rude. But a scarier thought occurred to you as you held your chest. Your heart was pounding in your chest and you felt a warm feeling spread across your body. This wasn't normal. And you knew it. But no—it was impossible. You scolded yourself.

If he became any nicer than this, it'd go worse than you expected.
