Chapter 57
"You think I should go with the red tie, the blue tie or no tie at all?"
Keigo turns toward me as he holds two ties in his hands. A faint smile on my lips as he holds the red tie to his neck before holding the blue one to his neck to show me the contrasting yet equally similar look. The winged hero is clad in a crisp white shirt with the top buttons undone, his cleavage of pecs poking through the top while I lean against the headboard of my bed. I couldn't help but bite my lip as he turns back around to show me the curvature of his ass. A small snort leaving my lips as he shakes his butt playfully. The pants he's wearing are very hugging.
For the first time in months, Keigo is actually going to look presentable for once. He's freshly shaven. He's washed his hair and his wings. He even managed to style it to the perfectionist standard that he wished. He bought new clothes. He's shined his shoes. You would think, if you had met him for the first time, that he had a date this evening. Not once has he done this sort of thing other than the night he proposed and even then, he didn't even brush his teeth.
No, no. Tonight, tonight is completely different. It's a game changer. Something that I have not only dreaded in my life but something that I know will not go down well if Keigo ruins this moment one bit. This is a do or die situation, after all. This can either go really, really well or it can fall flat on its face and I go home with egg all over my face. Tonight, my lovely children, Keigo and I are having dinner with my family. Not just any family members are attending too! Guess who's coming?!
My grandparents!
Hearing the word 'grandparents' leave my mouth made Keigo kick into overdrive. It's like he's a changed man. It's quite amusing to see him so uptight about meeting my grandparents for the first time. I'm sure they'll love him. It's not like they're that scary. Maybe he just wants to impress my grandparents? He doesn't even know who they are... or how scary they can be... although, I don't think it's that that scares him. It's also because my fathers parents, are coming too.
Even after my fathers death, my mother is still close with my dad's parents and often invites them over for dinners and occasions. They wouldn't miss out on my sister's and I's lives just because dad isn't here anymore. They wouldn't miss us for the world. Regardless whether dad would be here or not, my grandma and grandpa always made sure that Amai and I were safe and happy and healthy. They're both fine with Damien, they even applaud him for being so respectful when they first met (Damien offered to leave the house if they wanted, to keep them comfortable, if the thought of their daughter - in - law dating another man made them feel anxious).
I just hope they'll love Keigo like I do.
Turning toward me for an answer, Keigo puffs his cheeks out and holds the two ties toward me like I'm some sort of wizard that will magic up the solution. A small sigh leaves my lips as I click my tongue and tilt my head, considering what would actually go with his outfit. The red would go with his wings, yes, but then the blue would go with my outfit. After some heavy consideration, I clear my throat and push to my feet before taking both ties and placing them in his drawer.
"Go open collar, you're going to a family dinner at my mom's house, you're not meeting the Pope," I tell him, kissing his cheek as he pouts toward me before turning to his reflection to sort out his cuff links, "Kei, they're going to love you. Mom's been talking you up to them so it should be fine,"
"I know, I know... I just don't want to make them think I'm going to be a bad husband," Keigo tells me honestly as I turn him toward me and sort out his collar, "These are your grandparents babe; they're like... the top dogs in your family. I can't ruin this,"
"And you won't," I convince him, watching as he grabs his cologne and sprays himself with it before clearing his throat and taking a deep breath, "Aunt Yuna is coming too, she's bringing some dessert,"
"Do we need to bring anything?" Keigo asks, slipping his shoes on and clearing his throat as I slide into my pumps and brush down my outfit to make sure it's presentable, "Wine? Dessert? Starters? Sedatives?"
"Ourselves is enough, this dinner is for us," I tell him, letting him go down the stairs first before I slowly allow my wings to be released and follow after him, "It'll be fine,"
"Why have you got your wings out?" Keigo asks as we put a leash on Angel and begin to make our way out of the house and toward the car, "I thought you hated having your wings out inside,"
"My fathers side have this rule where you need your wings out at all times," I explain softly, buckling Angel into her dog seat for the car before sliding into the passenger seat with a small sigh, "It's basically because they don't want me to feel uncomfortable with my wings and stuff since dad died. My grandfather has beautiful, beautiful wings,"
"What's his quirk?" Keigo asks as he turns on the ignition and drives us out of the driveway toward my mothers home, "Is it Angel like your father?"
"His quirk is Eagle," I explain softly, leaning against the seat and smiling to myself as I draw circles on my thigh while looking out the front window with a small giggle, "He has all the heightened senses of an Eagle, the swiftness, the strength and the wings... my great grandfather had a mutation quirk that made him look like an Eagle,"
"Wow," Keigo comments, driving down the motorway while I mumble the lyrics to the song playing on the car speaker system. My fingers twirling the ring wrapped around my ring finger, "So... are you excited to see your grandparents?"
"I haven't seen them since my twentieth birthday, my grandmother on my mom's side got all funny when I told her that I dropped out of university," I tell him, rubbing the back of my neck as I clear my throat and take a deep breath as I remember my grandma yelling at me until she was red in her face for 'ruining my future' when I told her I dropped out from my degree, "She's very conservative... so she's going to kill us about our idea for our wedding,"
Keigo grimaces to himself but says nothing more on the matter. My grandmother, as kind as she can be, is very very traditional. She believes that if you wish to date someone, you have to ask permission from the parents. She tells me that to succeed in life: I have to go to university, find a successful man who earns a lot of money, work hard but not too hard and have children. That is how my grandmother thinks life works. She doesn't believe in following your dreams or dropping out of university. Everything has to be a certain way.
She almost popped a blood vessel when Aunt Yuna came out as transgender.
The only reason she accepts her is because my grandfather would have left her if she disowned my aunt and rejected her. My grandfather is just the nicest man I know, he wouldn't care if you were tall or short, gay or straight, non - binary or binary, he would love you regardless and keep you safe. So, despite her views, she accepts my aunt. She even researched everything to make sure she understood what was going on. Then, over time, began to accept the whole idea of the community after having Amai and I explain what it is and answer her questions that she had. So it had a happy ending to it...
Minutes later, Keigo pulls up at the house and he immediately stares toward me with wide eyes as he stares toward my grandparents from my father's side. A laugh leaving my lips as he gawks at the beautiful white and brown feathered wings sprouting from my grandpa's back. He's very proud of his wings. He always has been proud of them. They're his pride and joy. Kissing Keigo's cheek, I slide out of the car and whistle toward my grandfather who smiles and immediately wraps his arms around me.
"My beautiful baby," He coos, kissing my cheek as we pull away before he cups my chin and admires my face. A laugh leaving my lips as he chuckles and kisses my nose, "All grown up, you're looking like your mother day after day, more and more gorgeous,"
"Hey grandpa," I hum, smiling as he pulls his hand away and looks toward Keigo who helps Angel out of the car and lets her dart toward my mother, "Grandpa; this is Keigo, he's my boyfriend,"
"It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. (L/n)," Keigo hums, extending his hand toward my grandfather who smiles toward him, his brown eyes raking over my fiancé's form as he shakes his hand, "Keigo Takami,"
"I see my granddaughter has good taste," he comments making me roll my eyes playfully and stick my tongue out as he chuckles, "And the number two hero,"
Keigo grins slightly, his ego boosts his confidence as he leans into my side and kisses my cheek. Grandpa, my fathers dad, is probably one of the nicest people you'll meet. I mean, he's an old saint. He's in his early eighties now; retired and happy with his wife and living with a fat fluffy cat named Marshmallow. He used to work as a Captain in the army. He would go overseas years at a time and defend whatever he needed from whoever he was told to. He didn't have time to make enemies out of people. He's stared death in the face, why would he want to be mean?
You never know what other people are going through.
Beside him, cooing at the sight of Keigo, is my Grandmama, my fathers mother. She has gorgeous blue eyes that shimmer in the light with beautiful grey hair that goes down to her shoulders. Despite people expecting her to have wrinkles and achy bones, she doesn't. Her quirk; Regeneration, allows her to regenerate the cells that have once been lost. Over time, she's been unable to use it on other people and only herself. She doesn't have any wings, but she does have a healing quirk (which is what my father inherited and then I did). Grandmama is really sweet and chill too. She was so close to taking auntie Yuna in when she heard she became transgender too.
"Oh look at him. Handsome young man," My grandmama coos, taking Keigo's cheek between her fingers and squeezing it making him chuckle, "Your children will be beautiful,"
"Thank you grandmama," I hum, kissing her cheek before heading into my mothers house where my other grandparents sit : my grandad and my grandma (my mothers parents) on the couch with Damien, "Mom! We're here!"
"Oh look at you two," She coos, my mother immediately wrapping her arms around both Keigo and I making us smile and hug her back as she kisses our cheeks, "How are you?"
"We're good," I tell her softly before looking around and frowning softly, "Where's Amai?"
"Uh... she's staying at home today... something happened and she's having a night in," Mom explains making me frown as she clears her throat and takes a deep breath, "Rumi and Yu are with her for the evening, she sent some dessert though,"
"Oh... okay," I hum, looking toward Keigo who clears his throat and sends me a small reassuring smile as we head toward the living room where my grandparents from my moms side are, "Hi Grandad, hey grandma,"
"Who's this?" My grandmother immediately questions making me curse under my breath as I slide onto the couch with Keigo by my side, "I don't remember you having a significant other,"
"Well, Kei and I have been dating for a little over a year now," I tell her, intertwining my fingers with my fiancé's who chuckles and kisses my cheek, "Keigo is the number two hero, grandma,"
"Oh, that's great," Grandma hums, waving toward my fiancé who blushes slightly and waves back while resting his head on my shoulder, "(M/n)! How long til dinner!"
"Get your ass at the table and find out," Auntie Yuna tells her, setting down a couple of the plates onto the dining table while Damien looks toward me while grimacing, "Or better yet, stay there and we'll all eat your food,"
"Get up the table," Mom orders, poking her head into the living room before heading back into the kitchen, "(Y/n), could you help me with the gravy please?"
"Coming mama," I hum, kissing Keigo's cheek and mouthing a quick 'good luck' toward him as he heads toward the table before I head into the kitchen where my mom is standing with her apron covered with flour from making homemade Yorkshire puddings, "You okay, mama? What's up? Helping with gravy is codeword for 'I need to talk to you',"
My mother takes a deep breath as Yuna walks in and shuts the door. My eyes widening slightly at the atmosphere suddenly becoming deafening as I lean against the counter and watch as my mother pulls the homemade stuffing from the stove. Whenever a family dinner is happening, and my mother has important news to tell me she tells me that she needs me to 'help stir the gravy'. It's our codeword for me and then Amai's is 'can you pipe the cupcakes for dessert'. It's so the rest of the family don't know what's going on.
"It's about Amai," My mother begins, taking a deep breath as she puts the stuffing in a cream ceramic for everything to take out of, "And about why she isn't here,"
"Is everything okay?" I ask, looking toward Yuna who bites her lip and crosses her arms as she leans against the door, "Is she okay? Is she sick?"
"Your sister is fine... just... a bit out of sorts," Mom explains as she fiddles with her nails before taking a deep breath and ripping the bandaids off, "Arata's been arrested on suspicion of working with the Hankirai Yakuza,"
"He's what?" I ask with wide eyes, looking between them both as they share a small nervous look and sigh, "I... I don't understand, what's going on?"
"He could be a spy, he could be the reason why you were kidnapped," Yuna continues making me gawk at them both with wide eyes, coughing back the bile in the back of my throat, "Your sister feels terrible about it and she's devastated that she brought him into the house... she's not doing so well,"
"What did Tsukauchi say?" I ask, grabbing the gravy boat from the sink and letting mom fill it up while I look toward them both, "Which hero is on the case?"
"Keigo took over the case as soon as you were kidnapped," Mom explains, kissing my cheek as I send them a small smile, "Tsukauchi said that Arata is not coming out any time soon... I know your sister should be here but she needs to wind down... plus Rumi and her boyfriend split up while you were kidnapped..."
"What? Mom —"
"I'm so so sorry to interrupt your mother's meeting, but your mother is this close to calling Keigo her own and take him home," Damien interrupts opening the door with a small nervous smile as I look toward him while my mother curses under her breath, "And your father - in - law wishes to give Keigo his watch that was meant for your husband,"
"What did you slip them?" I ask worried as I walk into the dining room with the gravy boat and sit down at the table, "I'm so sorry I took so long, has grandmama told you any of my baby stories yet?"
"Yes, I distinctly remember the part where you used to make mud pies and then throw them at your sister when she slept," Keigo teases making me roll my eyes playfully and stick my tongue out at him as he grins, "Everything okay? Is the roast chicken actually turkey and the world is ending?"
"Oh ha, ha," I hum, flicking his arm before smiling as my mother and aunt finally sit down at the table before whispering to Keigo, "So when shall we tell them?"
Keigo hums gently and nods toward me while I send him an excited smile. As my mother gives us all the go ahead to dig into our meal. As we all dig into our meal, Keigo and I share a small look to each other as we swallow some of our gravy soaked chicken and soft stuffing.
The whole meaning of this dinner is to tell my parents and my grandparents (and would have been my sister too) about mine and Keigo's engagement and our wedding plans. Well, not necessarily a wedding... we're planning on getting eloped. We didn't want a huge wedding... just a small wedding with just mom and Damien and Amai and Rumi and Yuu. Small ceremony. Small reception. Nothing too big... something that my grandma wouldn't be too impressed with everything that we planned.
And don't get me started about how she'll react when we tell her that we're thinking of having children. She believes that you have to be married first and everything. She's very traditional.
After a while of us all eating, I clear my throat and look toward Keigo with a faint smile. Once everyone turns their attention toward me, I take a deep breath and smile toward my mother who arches her brow expectantly. This is it. Finally time to rip the bandaid off and tell them all what's happening in my life now that Keigo and I are all back to normal.
"Okay, so, uh... I have some exciting news to tell you guys," I begin, interlocking my hands with Keigo as he smiles teasingly toward me before sticking his tongue out, "I have three things... uh... the first one is that I got promoted, I now work at Modutusuka Fashion Industries as the head makeup artist,"
"Oh my god!" My mother cheers, covering her mouth as I smile toward her and rub the back of my neck as she claps her hands excitedly, "Sweetie! That's amazing!"
"Look at you, going up in the world," Aunt Yuna coos while I roll my eyes playfully and stick my tongue out at her, "So~ What's news number two?"
"Well, uh..." I begin slowly before looking toward Keigo who nods toward me and kisses my cheek, "Keigo and I are engaged!"
"You're engaged?!" My mother squeals, staring at me with wide eyes as I nod and show her the engagement ring while she cheers and rushes toward us with the most excited scream, "Oh my god! Oh my god! You're engaged! My baby girl is going to be a bride!"
"Ooh! When's the wedding?" Grandma asks, making me giggle and look toward her as she sends me a small smile, "Is it in the summer? Have a summer wedding, that'll bring you good luck and —"
"Grandma, grandma," I tell her softly, wanting her to calm down while my mom smothers Keigo like he's one of her own children, "We're not planning on having a big wedding —"
"What? Why not?" She immediately asks making me curse under my breath as she glowers my way, "Why aren't you having a big day?..."
"We just want a small wedding," I tell her softly, rubbing the back of my neck as Keigo is smothered by Yuna who peppers him with affection and love, "We're going to save our money for children,"
"(Y/n), have I taught you nothing?"...
"Grandma, do you want to have great grandchildren?"....
"Well yeah,"...
"Then hush,"...
