(41) Hate the feels he gives
I love you Alan.
"No."
I love you Alan.
"W-wait."
I love you Alan.
"No."
I love you Alan.
"No!" I pushed passed the crowd. "Wait!"
I jumped into the ambulance right on time, beside Max as the two workers around me were ordering this and that, attaching tubes to his body and counting down, pressing gadgets and looking up from time to time at the drive at the front.
I barely heard the emergency noises as the vehicle sped through the traffic to its destination.
"Sir, I need you to call anyone that's his relation. We need them at the hospital as soon as we get him in."
I looked up at the worker, who was gloved and all.
I love you Alan.
"Sir, are you related to this person?"
I stared at her. She hand a warm eyes but her face showed the urgency. I numbly nodded.
She took a moment, probably wondering if I was lying or not before continuing her work. I moved my eyes to the laying Max, watching as he sat motionless, eyes closed. And his chest wasn't rising.
At least, that's what I thought.
The lady in front of me didn't think so and she kept reminding me that he's fine.
I wanted to snap back that he's not.
He's fucking playing dead.
And it was freaking me out.
I love you Alan.
Then we arrived there suddenly and more people came, taking Max out, jogging with him, more voices around us. I had my phone with me when one of them stared straight into my eyes and told me that if I wanted to help, I needed to call for someone older or any other family member asap.
My fingers trembled as I pressed on mum's number. And my hands started to shake when I pressed it to my ear.
"Hello, Alan?"
My voice got stuck at my throat. "Mum."
"Alan? Are you okay? You made a big scene when you left."
I listened to her, hoping that she wouldn't ask what happened. I just wanted to listen to her. I didn't want to believe that I was experiencing something so frightening.
"Alan, are you okay? Where are you?" I didn't say anything. "I hope you're at that theatre you told us. Aren't you with your girl?"
I gulped.
"Alan. Talk to me if you're going to call."
I gulped again, realising that I was sore. I needed water. "Mum, can you come to the hospital?" My voice cracked at the end and I knew I'd alarmed her already.
"The hospital? Alan, baby are you okay?"
I nod to myself. "It's not me. Max's inside and I d-don't know what to do. They say I need to get an adult in..."
"Okay, okay." She sounded like she was busy. "It's okay. Honey I'm coming, don't worry. Which hospital?"
I gulped. "The general, emergency wards..."
She took a long breath in next to the phone. "Okay Alan, I'm coming. I need you to stay strong, okay? Whatever that's going to happening, no one's alone."
I nod again.
"Did you hear me Alan?"
I nod.
I love you Alan.
"Alan."
"Yes mum."
"Okay, okay." A door slammed shut from her side. "I'm coming and after we figure everything out, you can explain to me what happened, okay?"
I nod again and whisper a bye. Then I'm back to staring at the door they took Max in. The place was crowded, but a lot of people were actually leaving. I noticed the empty chairs on both sides of the place and had an argument with myself if I should sit or not.
What if they suddenly bring Max out?
I needed to be right there without taking time.
A few nurses walked in and out without taking a second glance at me. Then a doctor walked in, nodding a single nod my way. Afterwards, a nurse walked out and then walked back in, only to come out a second later, a file in her hands.
"You're with the patient on the car accident case?"
I nod after a second, taking a step towards her. She didn't flinch.
"And you're the one that was in the car?" My eyes widen and I felt like I was about to vomit. "Sorry. You're related to the boy?"
I nod. "H-he's..." I took a deep breath. "My boyfriend."
"Okay," the nurse didn't even glance at me, writing something on her sheet. "And do you have any adults coming over soon?"
I stared at her. Suddenly, I felt like I could trust her. She would help Max back to normal. "I called m-my mum."
"Okay—"
"Alan!"
We both turned around to see mum walking down the hospital hallway, wearing a pair of jeans and a blue blouse with a coat over herself with a handbag in hand.
She only glanced at me for a while before turning her attention to the nurse as soon as she was with us. "Hey, I'm Alan's mother."
The nurse gave a tight smile. One that assured calmness. "Hi, here, I'm taking the basic information about the patient and after that, you can fill the rest of the sheets. There's a few proceeders." My mum nodded along. "I need to know the patient's name..."
Mum turned to me. "Max?"
I turned to the nurse. "I told them, Max Winters."
"Right, it's just protocol to recheck. And his age?"
"He's not eighteen yet, right Alan?"
I nod. "He's turning eighteen soon."
Nurse nodded calmly, "okay, so that means you don't have to worry about the fees just yet. Since he's under eighteen, we actually give time to settle payments until the patient is discharged or... otherwise." She said the last part to mum but I felt nauseous anyways, knowing that she's talking about the possibilities.
Possibilities of me loosing him.
I love you Alan.
"Alan."
Mum reached out to me, taking my arm on a tight grip.
The nurse went on. "The doctor came in and he's going through everything that needs to be done. For now, I need you to reach out to his own family members, if he has... any..."
She turned to the both of us and mum turned to me.
"He does. His parents—"
"No," I mutter. "His grandma. Helena."
"Right, and the doctor is sure that he's going to need an operation. His lungs are crushed and there's difficulty breathing." She glanced at me. "We'll be briefing you through what we're doing from now and then. The doctor will be with you if he wants to say anything, or we'll be here, you can just call us whenever we want. We're here to do our best. You should take a seat for now."
Then she turned to me, giving mum a smile as if to say that she understood.
"Look, he's going to be fine. I've seen a lot of accidents from my side of the situation and I know this might not help but, Max isn't at his worst and he has a great chance that he's going to survive this."
I didn't nod but the nurse smiled at me one more time before starting to walk.
"When you're ready, you can go to the front desk and ask for the forms. They'll help you through everything. And it's best to call the patient's grandmother as soon as possible."
Mum was next to me, pulling me back to the chairs, her hand never leaving mine. "Hey, are you okay?"
I looked up at her and saw how open minded she was being. And the tears fell before I knew it and I brushed it away harshly. "It's okay. Honey, Max will be fine."
I sniffed, looking down at the tiles.
"Do you know his grandma's number?"
I shook my head, making sure to keep my bottom lip was caught between my teeth.
"Do you know anyone that does? What about Max's phone?"
I remember the zip-lock bag the nurses took and told mum about it. "I should probably call Mason. He would probably know... I'm not sure."
I could feel mum nodding as she rubbed my back. "Okay, that's fine. I called dad about you calling me on my way and just told him where we were since I didn't know what's going on."
I nod.
"Oh Alan."
I didn't look up at her. Tears just kept following and my lips were shaking crazy as I tried to breath at the same time.
"You want to tell me how it happened?"
I shook my head, rocking on my seat. "No..."
"Okay, that's fine. But I do need to know how he was when the ambulance came. I'm going to have to make some calls and get the paperwork done."
I shook my head again, sniffing. "Mum..." she moved closer and I grabbed onto her smaller frame, laying my head on her shoulder. "H-he wasn't breathing..."
I gasped for a breath as I started to hear my loud crying. Mum pulled me closer, rocking the both of us.
"He w-wasn't breathing and he was just... t-there... I... after a man helped out, doing the CPR, h-he was able to breath but it was so hard for him and I could s-see that he was in s-so much p-pain..."
And he told me that he loved me.
"I can't..."
As if he was saying his goodbye.
Mum cooed, assuring me that everything would be okay. But she didn't know that. She didn't know it with grandma May at the start. She didn't know it with Katie becoming ours. As if she'll know about it for Max.
And all I could do was wait.
Every beat was like the hole in me burning out.
And soon I was so scared that I'd be left with nothing.
I love you Alan.
