Chapter VII: Rising Star
People needed love as a medium for survival through their life, it was just like how workers needed energy to get by the day or how butterflies needed their wings to migrate along with their loved ones. Love was in pairs; the lover and their reason to love. Always hand in hand through what life tumbled towards them.
I was alone while Lucas was a rising star. He saw me but not with love, it was more of the hunt to prey for the predator. I was going to win, but he won over me after thousands of trials to get to me until he got what he wanted and stepped on it.
I wasn't his unlucky prey this time around.
The morning harshly lightened upon us, and I was having a mild headache today if it wasn't for Reign, who saw it on my face and decided to be kind when he handed me a pill for the banging that was happening in my head.
Today marked the start of my endeavour to a greater life. Lucas wasn't going to damage today for me.
"Mornin', sunshine." I was greeted with Reign's wildish smile after he set the two sandwiches he bought from outside for breakfast. I smiled back at his thoughtful gesture when I got out of bed.
"Morning, what time is it?" I stretched my arms out when I inquired at the active guy, who was busy setting two water bottles on the side of the trey that he placed on the couch.
"It's seven," he said sheepishly, trying to coat his ambitious nature in front of me when his eyes returned to his sandwich, his hands wrapped around it to take a big bite revealing the turkey bits and cucumber. "You have to try this, it's insanely good." He groaned as he munched with his eyes closed. I laughed at the goofy boy and slapped his hand away.
"Hey, wait for me, at least." I scolded at the guy who started before me as he chuckled in return. I ran to the bathroom for my morning routine since my stomach has been complaining to eat as weird noises came through.
As soon as I finished everything and put on my outfit for the day which included my favorite maroon-colored, full-sleeved shirt with golden flairs at the hems with my flawless black high-waisted straight jeans and black boots, I was ready to dive into the goodness that Reign praised.
I sat across from Reign when I took my sandwich and gulped down the bites, the turkey with the crunch of cucumbers invaded my senses, the avocado took over at the end and I knew it was going to be my addictive breakfast.
"You already love it." He noted, and I almost forgot how pigged out I looked in front of him. My cheeks tinted red when I swallowed the last bite, wiping the ends of my mouth with the tissue.
"Yes, that was amazing." I gushed. He wiped his own mouth before he smiled at me in his black-and-white shirt and his slim jeans. He had a creative style to him, and I wanted to try them on from how comfortable they appeared on him.
He could easily get into anything and would still look good no matter what.
We both hydrated ourselves at the end. "Hey, so I wanted to ask you, my friend will have a small party in his dorm tonight, do you want to come?" His invitation was attractive, but something told me that Lucas would host the party and I didn't want to spend my night hanging out with stoners.
"No, I have other plans." I answered, looking away from his glance.
"Too soon? I am a proud brother for your social skills." He mocked by placing a hand on his heart.
"You aren't the only one who is good at mingling." I hinted cheekily and he rolled his eyes at me before he stood up.
"About that, I got some juicy stories about my friend getting hate but it will have to wait." He mentioned, my mood dampened slightly but I didn't show it in front of the oblivious guy.
"Looking forward to that." I stood up after putting the wraps in the bin beside my bed.
"Same here, which class do you have?" He questioned, his bulky arm around my shoulder as he saw my schedule that was gripped in my hand. "History, that's on my way, let's go." He ushered when he closed the door.
We trudged along the hallway, my anxiety creeped up on me at the thought of my first class ever, my palms were starting to get clammy, and my eyes hoped that we didn't encounter the guy who ruined my life.
I took a breath after another as I simplified the dark thoughts in my head at the people getting into class and sharing ideas in groups on the sides of the classrooms.
Reign's cologne smelt like cinnamon spice, which somewhat relaxed my stress as he walked beside me. That earned me a few pointed glares since I was walking with a mesmerizing creature.
I didn't want to classify him as humans because humans were bad enough for me, he was much more than that; he was a pleasant angel.
Grabbing my bag strap on my shoulder which had my notebooks inside for the new classes, Reign stopped on my designated classroom that had a few people inside.
"Wish you luck, babe." He gave me a side hug, which got him an awkward one-sided smile from me before he strolled off to his class.
The class had square desks and people who were already sleeping at the back. I recognized the professor that came, my nausea got bigger at his arrival and I wanted to slap myself harder for my imagination.
Sadly, it was real. The professor standing in front of me was Micheal Hughes, also known as Lucas's dad.
"Lucas, what are those?" I asked, my fingers trailing along the scars on his upper left arm.
"My dad." It was a two-worded reply, but I knew enough.
