Chapter LI: Sadness
The car chase began and Khai's expert driving got us a head start as the honks of the passing vehicles deafened us. I felt cold all over and I tried to calm my shivering hands down, but it was to no avail. Blood rushed to my ears and I felt like I wasn't figuratively there, it was like I got teleported to another place.
"How the hell did you do that?" Khai questioned, reminding me where we were; we were almost off to the corner with the huge black cars behind us. I was the only one who saw the necklace, Khai wasn't the slightest bit aware.
I was meant to find it.
"I will tell you later but we have to find another way to lose them." I said in a rush as my eyes glued to the side mirror, I reminded myself to breathe when Khai was focused on the road, my back bumped against the chair as he stepped on the gas.
I eased the back of my head to ease the pain, Khai had driving skills I didn't know about, he roughly veered off to the sideline as he swerved through to the main road. He surprised me even more when the car escalated to the sideway to smoothly pass over the traffic.
My fingers wrapped themselves around the pendant as I squeezed it, feeling a strange aura devouring my entire body. How come Khai didn't see the back of the necklace when he literally scanned it?
That only meant that I was the only one who saw it. It was intentional and I was fully certain that mom didn't put the protection on it, but who did?
Tingles on the back of the necklace made my neck feel a bit itchy as I gripped it in my hand and rubbed my thumb on the pendant. Other girls were totally living their normal life, but we had anything but normal. Khai and I weren't destined to have that for our family.
Especially since we knew the whole truth: Elaina didn't want us and dad loved us unconditionally, Becky died and Ivan was a part of mom's deal, Reign and Lowe were under danger and we had to keep them safe. Lucas was unwillingly near Elaina's side for whatever thing she was holding against him.
"Who is Sienna, Khai?" The question on my lips intruded the silence. I twisted my neck to meet his profile. He had icy eyes as his jaw ticked when we successfully sidetracked the men and he parked near a dumpster in an isolated corner of the traffic behind.
He was irked as he messed with his hair before unclasping the seatbelt and turning sideways to face me. He looked beyond tired with drooping eyes and his red palms were obvious when he held mine.
"Naya, Sienna was Callum's adopted sister." Khai admitted as his eyes glinted under the hood of the dark car. He meant what he was saying, so I paused to let him continue as I squeezed his palms gently. That blow out was something I didn't expect. That was why Yaris told Khai that his accident wasn't a mistake, it was meant to happen.
Yaris was a part of Elaina's gang. She wanted to play with Khai's head; she was far more treacherous than what we saw.
"But how? What happened to her?" I asked when his eyes looked conflicted, as if he was debating on whether to tell me or not. He let go of my hands and bashed them on the steering wheel as he stared ahead with soulless eyes. Just like he did when Callum died.
"It's hard for me to tell, it's not my story to tell." He whispered. I drew in a breath as I placed my palm on his shoulder.
"She died along with Callum, back when mom was living with us, I overheard her saying that she wanted her daughter back when I was in the kitchen, she was really distraught and she kept kicking the door and breaking the glass." Khai spoke in a cracked voice. I felt sympathetic towards my brother, not only he lost his only best person, he was caught in Elaina's heartbreak.
I stopped calling her my mother. I took a promise to call her by her name because she meant nothing to me and the feeling was mutual. She made sure to make me feel it.
"That means she knew that Sienna died, right?" I detected and he nodded in a haze. He was really torn apart remembering the traumatic memory that ripped his life apart.
I soothed him with a hug as I played with the back of his hair, his shoulders shook and I realized that he was having a nervous breakdown as he tightened the hug and cried his heart out.
The sun started to fade through the windows of the car when we pulled apart, his eyes bloodshot with the serenity that he was able to get his emotions out, I was able to break his barrier. Elaina couldn't love my brother as much as she did for our newfound sister. A sister I didn't even know I had died along with Khai's lover.
There was so much hidden behind Elaina's veil but I professed that I would find everything and that I would be the one who would end her for harming the people I loved.
I knew what I had to do, but I would do it alone. She was going to pay for showing up in my life.
"Khai, take me back to the dorms–"
"No, she could have men around to hunt you down, I won't let that happen!" He burst out angrily, his eyes plighted with determination.
"It's okay, you need to rest and I will be with Lowe anyway." I peaceably spoke. His expression faltered, "besides, dad is going to be worried, once you rest, you can come over to my room." I continued, he closed his eyes for a moment in the middle of his confliction.
His eyes opened to mine.
"Alright, let's get going."
Little did he know that was when my plan would start.
