Chapter 38: The Order of the Phoenix
A dark black-and-gray sky is shown, and a bright white flash of light appears, and the park appears during the daytime in the year 1995. Alongside the park, showing a silhouette of a figure walking by himself. A radio plays as he is walking through the park.
Man on Radio: I don't know about you, but it's just too hot today, isn't it? And it's going to get even worse. Temperatures are up in the mid-30s Celsius, that's the mid-90s Fahrenheit, tomorrow, maybe even hitting 100. So please, remember to cover up and stay cool, with the hottest hits on your FM dial.
Later, the figure sits on a swing set, looking at his shadow, and looking up to reveal Harry Potter, now fifteen years old, looking at a mother and her children longingly, wishing that he had a family of his own.
Mother: Come on, guys, time to go home. Come on, love, off you get.
She holds her son's hand, as he reluctantly gets off the wheel.
Boy: Do we have to?
Mother: Yes, we do. Hey, I'll make you your favorite dinner to compensate.
A gang of boys laughing, as the main gang leader, Harry's cousin, Dudley Dursley.
Gang Member 1: He squealed like a pig, didn't he?
Gang Member 2: Yeah, brilliant punch, Big D.
Gang Member 3: Did you see his face?
Gang Member 4: Yeah.
Harry Potter: [to Dudley] Hey, Big D. Beat up another 10-year-old?
Dudley Dursley: This one deserved it.
Gang Members 1 and 2: Yeah.
Harry: [sarcastically] Five against one, very brave.
Dudley: Well, you're one to talk. Moaning in your sleep every night? At least I'm not afraid of my pillow.
The gang laughs at him along with the rest of his group.
Dudley: [Mockingly] "Don't kill Cedric." Who's Cedric, your boyfriend?
The gang laughs at Harry.
Harry: Shut up.
Dudley: [mockingly] "He's going to kill me, Mum."
The gang laughs at Harry.
Dudley: Where is your Mum? Where is your mum, Potter? Is she dead?
The gang laughs at Harry again.
Dudley: [Laughing cruelly] Is she dead? Is she a dead Pott-.
Cut off as Harry runs up to him threateningly with his wand, and the gang laughs at him.
The sky suddenly turns gray, and the white clouds turn gray, as the wind starts howling and thunder rumbles.
Gang Member 1: Uh, Dudley...
Gang Member 2: Dudley, let's go.
Gang Member 3: What's going on?
Dudley: [to Harry] What are you doing?
Harry: I'm not doing anything.
Gang Member 1: [running away with the rest of the gang] We're getting out of here, Dudley. Come on, Dudley, hurry up.
Harry and Dudley look at the gray sky and intense music plays as they race down into an alleyway as thunder rumbles and wind howls. In the alleyway, lights flicker as their breaths become cold. Harry looks up to see a Dementor, and it grabs him and throws him into the wall.
Harry: [weakly] Dudley, run.
Dudley attempts to run but slips as another Dementor approaches. The first Dementor starts to choke Harry, and starts to try to suck his sou) out, and the other Dementor does as well, as Harry grasps for his wand, and it falls to the ground, as the Dementor drops Harry, who slides to his hand, as Dementor follows after him. He grabs his wand.
Harry: [pointing at the Dementor] Expecto Patronum!
A white light knocks back the Dementor out of the alleyway.
Harry gets up and looks at the other Dementor, who is towering over Dudley, as the latter whimpers. Harry uses the same spell to send the Dementor flying backward.
Harry races to Dudley's side, as Arabella Figg, wearing a poncho, appears behind them, carrying a cart.
Harry: [shocked] Mrs. Figg.
Arabella Figg: Don't put away your wand, Harry. They might come back.
Harry looks at her in shock and confusion. At night, Harry carries a very limp Dudley and walks with Mrs. Figg in the driveway of Privet Drive.
Mrs. Figg: Dementors in Little Whinging, whatever next? The whole world's gone topsy-turvy.
Harry: I don't understand. How do you know about-.
Mrs. Figg: Dumbledore asked me to keep an eye on you.
Harry: Dumbledore asked you. You know Dumbledore?
Mrs. Figg: Uh-huh. After You-Know-Who killed that poor Diggory boy last year, did you expect him to let you go wandering around on your own? Good Lord, boy. They told me you were intelligent.
They stop just outside the Dursleys' house.
Mrs. Figg: Now, get inside and stay there. I expect someone will be in touch soon. [Whispering] Whatever happens, don't leave the house.
Harry walks into the house with Dudley, as Mrs. Figg stands in the block. Later, Petunia Dursley is in a sundress, watching the news on the television in the living room.
Weatherman: [on TV] It is hot. That's right, hot everywhere. There's sweat, there's stifling...
Petunia Dursley: [as she hears the door opening] Diddykins? Is that you?
Harry opens the door, and Petunia sees Dudley's haunted face, and she immediately gets a concerned look on her face.
Petunia: Duddy? Vernon, come quick.
Vernon Dursley is shown eating out of the tub of ice cream in the freezer as Dudley is in Petunia's lap.
Petunia: We're going to have to take him to a hospital.
Vernon Dursley: Who did this to you, boy?
Dudley points at Harry and Petunia glares at him, and Vernon walks towards him.
Vernon: Happy, are we now? Eh? You've finally done it. You've finally driven him loopy.
Petunia: Vernon, don't say that.
Vernon: Well, ju-ju-just look at him, Petunia. Our boy has gone yumpy. [Approaching Harry with anger in his face] I've reached my limit, do you hear? This is the last I'm gonna take of you and your nonsense.
An owl screeches hits the fan and drops a letter onto the couch. It falls onto the ground and Vernon whimpers before intense music plays the letter hovers into the air and the owl flies off.
The owl approaches Harry and gains facial details, including black eyes and a black mouth.
Mafalda Hopkirk: [voice coming from the letter] Dear Mr. Potter...
Vernon: What?
Hopkirk: ... The Ministry has received intelligence that at 6:23 this evening, you performed the Patronus Charm in the presence of a Muggle. As a clear violation of the Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery, you are hereby expelled from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hoping you are well, Mafalda Hopkirk.
The letter ends its message returns to normal and falls onto the ground, as Vernon has a somewhat victorious expression.
Vernon: Justice.
Later, the Dursleys are shown in the driveway and Dudley whimpers. Vernon places him into the car and Mrs. Figg waves kindly at them from her window.
Vernon: [whispering] He's not very well. [Slams the car door]
At the same time, Harry is in his bedroom, and he bangs the closet, and Hedwig chirps in response, as the car engine rumbles and drives off. Hedwig screeches as Harry grabs the picture of his parents, James and Lily Potter, dancing in a water fountain.
Harry: Sorry, Hedwig. [Places the picture on his bedside table and looks at it]
The area changes to the scene in the graveyard from the previous movie, as Cedric Diggory faces Wormtail, who shoots him with the Killing Curse, and Harry utters an inaudible "No! Cedric!", which isn't heard. It changes to Lord Voldemort's rebirth. He wakes up and opens his eyes.
He was sleeping. A clock ticks as he gets up and a glass clicks as Harry puts on his glasses and footsteps approach, as his door starts to swing open and the lock falls out of the lock, as Harry has his wand raised, and a bright white light flashes, and Hedwig screeches. A group of Order of the Phoenix members, including Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody, Kingsley Shacklebolt, and Nymphadora Tonks, appear in the doorway.
Nymphadora Tonks: [whispering] Very clean, these Muggles.
Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody: Tonks, for God's sake.
Tonks: Unnatural. [Uses her wand to cast the Wand-Lighting Charm as Harry looks in shock at the group]
Harry: Professor Moody. What are you doing here?
Moody: Rescuing you, of course.
Later, the group walks out of the house.
Harry: Where are we going? The letter said I'd been expelled from Hogwarts.
Moody: Well, you haven't been. Not yet. [To Kingsley] Kingsley, you take point.
Harry: But the letter said...
Kingsley Shacklebolt: Dumbledore has persuaded the Minister to suspend your expulsion, pending a formal hearing.
Harry: A hearing?
Kingsley: Uh-huh.
Tonks: [to Harry] Don't worry, Harry, we'll explain everything when we get back to headquarters.
Moody: Shh! Not here, Nymphadora.
Tonks: [angrily, her hair turns red in irritation] Don't call me Nymphadora.
Her hair returns to normal as Moody taps his staff three times and broomsticks appear in their hands.
Moody: Stay in formation, everyone. Don't break ranks if one of us is killed.
Mrs. Figg watches in shock as instrumental music plays and the group flies away on broomsticks, zooming in the air. They fly throughout London, and past the ocean, passing several ships in the harbor. Tonks looks at Harry, as they pass several ships, the River Thames and Big Ben.
Outside Grimmauld Place, London, England, the group appears outside a locked gate and a garbage truck appears at a huge apartment complex.
Garbage Truck Driver: Come on, you around the corner.
Moody opens the door as the truck drivers drive away.
Moody: Come on.
They walk in front of the complex and Moody taps down his staff several times, and the complex starts shaking, as rumbling is heard, and the building starts shaping, and it rumbles again, as a new apartment facility formulated and appears, causing Harry to be shocked and have an awestruck grin.
In the hallway in Grimmauld Place, the door is heard creaking. Indistinct chatter is heard, as Harry looks at a light in the hallway. Moody walks past Harry, as do Tonks and the other Advance Guard members.
Arthur Weasley: [voice-only] We must trust Dumbledore.
Tonks smirks at Harry as she walks past him and trips over something as indistinct chatter.
Sirius Black: I say it's time to take action.
Molly Weasley: Shh! Keep your voices down!
Harry steps into the doorway and sees Order of the Phoenix members, including Sirius Black, Balthazar Blake, Remus Lupin, and Arthur Weasley in a sort of meeting.
Sirius: [directly looking at Harry] Stronger and stronger by the minute! We have to act now!
Harry smiles as Molly Weasley blocks them by standing in the way.
Molly: Harry.
Harry: Mrs. Weasley.
Molly shuts the door and goes to hug him with affection.
Molly: Heavens, you're alright! [Chuckles as she touches his face affectionately] Bit peaky, but I'm afraid dinner will have to wait until after the meeting's finished.
Harry: About that-
Molly: No. No time to explain. Straight upstairs, first door on the left.
Nodding as Harry walks up the stairs and exhales. Harry walks up the stairs and sees jars with skulls in them, and a house-elf, Kreacher, is seen cleaning the house.
Kreacher: [to himself] Mudblood and werewolves and traitors and thieves. [Harry walks up the stairs.] If my poor Mistress knew the scum they've let into her house, what would she say to old Kreacher? Oh, the shame.
Sees Harry and the door creaks and instrumental and intense music plays as Kreacher carries a box with him, Harry walks away, glancing back at Kreacher as he does so.
Walburga Black: [portrait, voice] Freaks.
Kreacher: There, there, Mistress.
Walburga: Scum of the earth. Not like it was in the days...
Kreacher: Kreacher is here.
Harry opens a bedroom door, and has a jump scare, as he gasps, as a girl with bushy brown hair hugs him. It is Hermione Granger.
Next to her is their other best friend, with bright ginger hair, Ron Weasley.
Behind him is their other best friend from America, Matthew Stutler.
Hermione Granger: Oh, Harry! [Let's go of him as the hug stops] Are you all right? We've heard them talking about the Dementor attack. You must tell us everything.
Matthew: Let the man breathe, Hermione.
Hermione: And this hearing at the Ministry! It's just outrageous! I've looked it up, they simply can't expel you. It's completely unfair.
Harry: [pacing around the room] Yeah. There's a lot of that going around at the moment. So, what is this place?
Ron: It's headquarters.
Hermione: Of the Order of the Phoenix. It's a secret society. Dumbledore formed it back when they first fought You-Know-Who.
Harry: [a bit angry] You couldn't have put any of this in a letter, I suppose? I've gone all summer without a scrap of news.
Ron: We wanted to write, mate. Really, we did. Only...
Harry: Only what?
Hermione: Only, Dumbledore made us swear not to tell you anything.
Harry: Dumbledore said that? But why would he want to keep me and Matthew in the dark? I mean, maybe we can help. After all, We're the ones who saw Voldemort return. We're the ones who fought him.
Matthew: And we're the ones who saw Cedric Diggory get killed.
Ron's prankster twin brothers, Fred and George Weasley Apparate into the room.
Fred Weasley: Harry. Thought we heard your dulcet tones.
George Weasley: Don't bottle it up, though, mate. Let it out. Anyway, if you're all done shouting... Do you wanna hear something a little more interesting?
Upstairs in the hallway, the group is eavesdropping on the meeting downstairs, using one of Fred and George's Extendable Ears to listen to the meeting, which is aimed towards the door.
Sirius: [voice, coming from the Extendable Ear] If anyone has a right to hear, it's Harry. If it wasn't for Harry, we wouldn't even know Voldemort back.
Fred puts the Extendable Ear to his ear.
Sirius: He's not a child, Molly.
Molly: [voice, coming from the Extendable Ear] Well, he's not an adult, either! He's not James, Sirius.
Sirius: He's not your son.
Molly: He's as good as. Who else has he got?
Ron's younger (and only) sister, Ginny Weasley, approaches the group and eavesdrops on the conversation, along with them.
Harry: Hey, Ginny.
Severus Snape: [voice, coming from the Extendable Ear] How touchingly paternal, Black. Perhaps Potter will grow up to be a felon, just like his godfather.
Sirius: You stay out of this, Snivellus.
Harry: [turning to face Ron and Hermione] Snape's part of the Order?
Ron: Git.
Hermione's orange cat, Crookshanks, sitting on the stairs next to the Extendable Ear.
Sirius: [voice, coming from the Extendable Ear] \ know better.
Indistinct chatter is heard as Crookshanks starts attacking the Extendable Ear and playing with it, much to the group's dismay.
Fred: [to Hermione] Get off it. Quick. Get off it. Get it up.
Hermione: [whispering] Crookshanks. Stop it.
Ron: Your bloody cat.
Matthew: Get away.
Hermione: Crookshanks, leave it alone! Get it up.
Crookshanks meows and finally walks away, leaving the Extendable Ear alone.
Ron: Hermione, I hate your cat.
Hermione: Bad Crookshanks!
Ron chuckles. Later, we see the group walking downstairs towards the kitchen.
Molly: Well, we'll be eating down in the kitchen.
Fred and George Apparate down into the kitchen, causing Molly to smack them in frustration and yelling, as they run off.
Molly: Oh! Just because you're allowed to use magic now does not mean you have to whip your wands out for everything!
Ginny: Hi, Mum.
Trying not to test his mother's patience, Ron scoots into the kitchen, as Arthur and Molly smile at Harry.
Molly: You hungry, Harry?
Arthur: You sure you're alright, Harry? You gave us quite a turn.
Sirius: [standing in the doorway with Remus] Harry Potter.
Molly stands out of the way, and with a smile on his face, Harry goes to hug Sirius while laughing as he does so.
Harry: Sirius.
Remus and Sirius both smile and laugh about this.
As the group is at the kitchen table, Tonks is shifting her nose to match different animals, including a pig, causing Ginny and Hermione to laugh about this.
Arthur: [to Harry] This is very, very peculiar. It seems that your hearing at the Ministry is to be before the entire Wizengamot.
Harry: I don't understand, what has the Ministry of Magic got against me?
Moody: [to the group] Show him. He'll find out soon enough.
Kingsley gives Harry a newspaper article, and the headline reads "The Boy Who Lies?", before shifting to "Fudge: All is Well".
Sirius: He's been attacking Dumbledore as well. Fudge is using all his power, including his influence at the Daily Prophet to smear anyone who claims the Dark Lord has returned.
Harry: Why?
Balthazar: The Minister thinks Dumbledore's after his job.
Harry: But that's insane, no one in their right mind could believe that Dumbledore-.
Remus: Exactly the point. Fudge isn't in his right mind. It's been twisted and warped by fear. Now, fear makes people do terrible things, Harry. The last time Voldemort gained power, he almost destroyed everything we hold most dear. Now, he has returned, and I'm afraid the Minister will do almost anything to avoid facing that terrifying truth.
Sirius: We think Voldemort wants to build up his army again. Fourteen years ago, he had huge numbers at his command and not just witches and wizards, but all manner of dark creatures. He's been recruiting heavily, and we've been attempting to do the same. But gathering followers isn't the only thing he's interested in.
Moody clears his throat.
Sirius: We believe... Voldemort may be after something.
Moody: Sirius.
Sirius: Something he didn't have last time.
Harry: You mean, like a weapon?
Molly rushes towards Harry and picks up the newspaper article.
Molly: No. That's enough. He's just a boy! You say anymore and you might as well induct him into the Order straight away.
Harry: Good. I want to join. If Voldemort's raising an army, then I want to fight.
Sirius sits back in his seat in victory and Harry smiles at him, and Sirius winks at him. Later that night the kids are sleeping in their beds. Harry's hearing voices from his nightmare.
Man: Harry.
Hopkirk: You are hereby expelled...
Arthur: Before the entire Wizengamot.
