This curse causes an instant death. It is accompanied by a flash of green light and a rushing sound. There is no known counter-curse that can save the victim from death, except through a sacrifice of love. It is one of the three Unforgivable Curses.
Harry Potter was saved from this curse several times, partly by the sacrifice of his mother, partly because he was accidentally a Horcrux, and partly because his wand and that of his enemy were made of the same core.
