The howler
Harry chuckles as he spots the fourth howler this week. It was Tuesday.
It goes up to a third year ravenclaw that Harry barely recognizes. Although he catches a faint memory of her hitting a bludger.
"That's Loreena Springs." Ron whispers in his ear. "She plays quidditch for ravenclaw, and has been dating Jaime Walsh."
After a questioning look from Harry, Ginny joined their conversation, "I told him all that. I happen to know Loreena. Nice girl, but she can turn ruthless as a bludger in less than a second."
Loreena had opened the letter with a look of disdain and a glare towards the Hufflepuff table. So Jaime was most likely a Hufflepuff.
Every eye was on Loreena. Ignoring the attention, she opened the letter with annoyance.
"Loreena, how dare you!" Out came a booming voice of a teenager who was obviously midway through puberty. He sounded rather hysterical.
This should be rather amusing then, Harry thought to himself.
"I can't believe you cheated on me! And that's not even the worst part!" the voice exclaimed. "You lied to me about it! We had agreed that we wouldn't lie about these things! It doesn't even bother me that you cheated, but then I heard you cheated again WITH A GIRL! AGAIN! This relationship is obviously not working! I'm done! Don't talk to me anymore all that comes out is lies!"
The howler crumbled to ashes after a last cry of sadness.
As soon as it was finished Korean yelled, "well Jaime if you hadn't cheated on me with all three of my brothers maybe I would've been a little more truthful!"
A tall red haired Hufflepuff ran out out of the room obviously overwhelmed.
Mouths were dropped, eyes were wide. Some sat quietly staring ahead. There were the few who recovered quickly and had started gossiping with those nearest to them. Nobody had expected that.
The past howlers had all been breakups as well, but that was definitely the most dramatic out of the bunch.
°°°°°
Since tuesday, the howlers had slowed slightly. The one had deterred quite a few. Harry supposed none could reach that level of drama, so they didn't even try.
Although he was definitely ready to watch the next person get shouted at. Like everyone else, he watched for the next red envelope that would bring a ruckus of some sort. Then like clockwork, the owls swooped in. Each bringing news from various places. Some from parents, others from siblings, from family friends, friends that were muggles, and some from secret admirers. It didn't look like there were any howlers today. So everyone settled back into their seats reading their letters.
As usual Harry didn't get a letter. At this point that was normal, and he continued with his meal without a care.
A couple minutes after, another hoot was heard. This was a large, elegant owl. An eagle owl Harry recognized. It was carrying a red envelope.
The owl swooped past the Hufflepuff table to the ravenclaw table, and seeming to settle on the Gryffindor table. Then it flew from one end to the other. It came back seeming to choose its target. Everyone was whispering and wondering where it would land.
As everyone's attention was now on it, it shouldn't have been a surprise when it landed in front of Harry Potter. Despite this, they were suprised. The boy couldn't even get a break after the war.
Sighing, Harry took the letter and watched the eagle owl fly away. What could this be for? He hasn't broken any laws recently, and he'd broken up with Ginny ages ago. Either way, he didn't think she'd be the type to send a howler. The worst he'd done was go into the forbidden forest with Hagrid. That wouldn't be a good enough reason to create and send a howler though.
Preparing himself, he held it and stared blankly at it.
"Well go on. Get it over with Harry," Ron encouraged.
His finger slipped under and slowly pulled up the flap.
"Harry James Potter!" A familiar voice boomed. He couldn't quite place who it was.
"How dare you forget our anniversary! I know we've been growing apart, but that's a step too far! My mother has been dying to see you, and you refuse to see her! You can't even look me in the eye anymore!" The name and face of the person was on the tip of his memory. It felt so close, yet it felt so far.
The howler continued, "do you know how much it hurts that you can nearly look me in the eyes? I understand you've been through a lot, but you have to realize I have too! Its just unfair to me to put so little effort in our relationship. Bloody hell, we don't even fight anymore!"
That was when it clicked for Harry. He looked at the Slytherin table with his eyes wide and full of curiosity. His questions were answered when he found Draco Malfoy smirking back at him.
"And then you left me last night without saying goodbye! I'm sorry Harry, but I can't stay with you if you keep on avoiding your problems! I'm breaking up with you. Goodbye Harry."
As the ashes crumbled to the floor, Harry stood up abruptly. Stepping over the bench, he speed walked toward the Slytherin table. As he walked over, he spoke, "Draco Lucius Malfoy, are you really making a fuss over our three month anniversary? And its you who can't look me in the eyes! For Merlin's sake, you've insisted that it was alright when I told you I wasn't ready to see Malfoy manor after what happened there! I'm willing to meet literally anywhere else!"
Harry had finally reached Draco and yanked him up. Bewildered, Draco fell towards Harry. Catching Draco, Harry began to pull him out if the hall.
"We are not over yet Draco! Not yet! And Blaire almost caught me this morning! You'd been begging to keep the relationship a secret! Now you go and out us without my permission, and attempt to break up with me at the same time? Unbelieveable!" They were now far away from the great hall, and Draco was left spluttering.
Draco was still trying to process what had happened.
When Harry finally stopped and turned around he began, "Next time you prank me, you should probably know," Harry leaned close and whispered the next part. "The hat wanted to sort me in Slytherin."
With that, Harry did the dramatic Snape twist and his cloak flew brilliantly behind him.
Then Harry stopped one last time and shouted over his shoulder, "See you later Boyfriend!"
The next week held many air kisses, hugs, and proclamations of Harry's love for Draco.
Three months later they really were dating.
Draco still blushed whenever people asked how they got together. Harry would shoot a knowing look at Draco and say that it's a private moment for the two of them.
They would never say that they got together after they'd had a snogging session to prove they were dating when it was still fake. Their relationship was difficult to understand.
