Chapter 3: The Grand Feast and Potions Class

After all the First Years had been sorted, the students were talking among themselves. [Y/N] had been in the process of telling Harry about her family when McGonagall run her spoon against her glass.

"Your attention, please." She shouted, causing the students to fall silent. Dumbledore rose from his seat.

"Let the feast," he rose his hands into the air. "Begin." Dumbledore said. Suddenly, food magically appeared on all the tables. Everything from ham and meats to sweets like lollipops and candy. [Y/N]'s eyes widened at the sight before her.

"Wow." Harry muttered. The students and the teachers started to dig in, eating their fill. Ron was stuffing his face in a very unflattering way.

"I'm half and half," a Gryffindor first year named Seamus explained. "Me dad's a Muggle. Mam's a witch. Bit of a nasty shock for him when he found out." Seamus said, making Neville laugh. Harry was sitting next to Percy Weasley, the Head Boy for Gryffindor.

"Say, Percy, who's that teacher talking to Professor Quirrell?" Harry asked. [Y/N] who had been helping herself to [f/f] (favorite food), looked over as well. Percy looked over at the person Harry was talking about. Percy hummed.

"Oh, that's Professor Snape, head of Slytherin house." Percy said. [Y/N] narrowed her eyes slightly.

"What's he teach?" She asked. Percy looked at her.

"Potions. But everyone knows it's the Dark Arts he fancies. He's been after Quirrell's job for years." Percy said. [Y/N] hummed and turned back to eating. Ron, having just finished a chicken wing, reached into the bowl for more. Suddenly, a ghost, popped out, surprising Ron.

"Ahh!" Ron shouted in surprise. [Y/N] jumped and looked over at Ron. She knew that ghost. It was Sir Nicholas, the Gryffindor House Ghost.

"Hello!" Sir Nicholas greeted. "How are you? Welcome to Gryffindor." Sir Nicholas said. He looked around as more ghosts appeared. The Fat Friar, the Hufflepuff House ghost, sailed through the Great Hall, waling.

"Whoo-hoo-hoo!" The Fat Friar called. The Bloody Baron, the ghost of Slytherin House, sailed over the Slytherin table, waving his sword back and forth, cackling.

"Look, it's the Bloody Baron!" A girl from the Slytherin table called. The Gray Lady, the ghost of the Ravenclaw House, sailed through the Great Hall as well.

Percy smiled at Sir Nicholas.

"Hello, Sir Nicholas. Have a nice summer?" Percy greeted. Sir Nicholas turned to face Percy, floating in the air. He frowned.

"Dismal. Once again, my request to join the Headless Hunt has been denied." Sir Nicholas said. He turned to leave when Ron called out to him,

"I know you! You're Nearly Headless Nick!" Ron shouted. Sir Nicholas turned to face Ron.

"I prefer Sir Nicholas if you don't mind." Sir Nicholas said. Hermione frowned.

"Nearly headless? How can you be nearly headless?" Hermione asked. Sir Nicholas shrugged.

"Like this." He grabbed his head and pulled it to the side. [Y/N] gasped and jumped in shock. His head is hanging on just by a thread!

"Ahh!" Ron screamed out in fear. Hermione turned her head away in disgust. Harry just rolled his eyes. Sir Nicholas reattached his head and floated away.

After the feast, Percy was leading the Gryffindors to their common room.

"Gryffindors, follow me, please. Keep up. Thank you." Percy shouted.

"Ravenclaws, follow me. This way." The Head Boy for the Ravenclaws lead the first years towards the Ravenclaw common room.

"This is the most direct path to the dormitories. Oh, and keep an eye on the staircases, they like to change." Percy said. [Y/N] looked up, seeing a vast amount of staircases, some of which were changing. "Keep up, please, and follow me. Quickly now, come on. Come on." Percy urged. They began walking up the stairs. As they were walking, some of the portraits were greeting the first years. Neville stared in wonder.

"Seamus, that picture's moving!"

Ron pointed at a portrait of a woman.

"Look at that one, Harry, [Y/N]!" Ron said. [Y/N] smirked at Ron.

"I think she fancies you." [Y/N] teased. Ron rolled his eyes at her. A bit later on the seventh floor, the first years and Percy were in the corridor leading to Gryffindor Tower. They came up to a large painting of a large woman in a pink dress. She was known as The Fat Lady. The Fat Lady looked at Percy.

"Password?" The Fat Lady requested.

"Caput Draconis." Percy recited. The Fat Lady smiled and nods in confirmation. The painting suddenly opened up to reveal a doorway in the wall, leading to Gryffindor Tower. "Follow me, everyone. Keep up, quickly, come on." Percy called. [Y/N] looked around the room. The common room itself was a circular room. It was full of squashy armchairs, and tables, all in the Gryffindor colors. The common room was decorated in several shades of red, which was associated with the house. [Y/N] gasped in aw.

"Oh, wow." She breathed.

"Gather 'round here," Percy said. The first years did as told. "Welcome to the Gryffindor Common Room. Boy's dormitories, upstairs and down to your left. Girls, the same on your right. You'll find that your belongings have already been brought up. With that said, the boys and girls raced up the winding mahogany staircase, decorated with crimson and gold, eager to get to their respective dormitories, excited to see what their bedrooms were like. [Y/N] looked around and smiled. There were four-posters that were covered with thick scarlet blankets, embroidered with gold. They were made of the same mahogany wood that the staircase was made of. [Y/N] heard a familiar screech and she raced over to a four-poster by the furthest window. [Y/N] smiled and saw Luna, her bat.

"Hey there, Luna." She greeted. She opened the cage and extended her fingers, allowing Luna to grab onto them with her feet. Carefully, not wanting to harm her friend, [Y/N] took her out of the cage. Luna used her thumbs to climb from [Y/N]'s fingers and settled on her friend's arm. [Y/N] smiled and gently stroked the bat's head. "I missed you to, Luna." She said.

The next morning, the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff House students were in Transfiguration class with Professor McGonagall. The class was silent. A gray cat was sitting on the desk, watching over the class. Two seats were empty. Suddenly, the doors to the class burst open, making [Y/N] jump. She and Hermione looked over their shoulders, seeing Harry and Ron rush in. [Y/N] chuckled lightly, while Hermione rolled her eyes. The two boys were out of breath.

"Whew, we made it." Ron huffed in amazement. "Can you imagine the look on McGonagall's face if we were late?" Ron asked. [Y/N] looked up from her paper.

"Uh, boys," she started, but it was too late. The cat jumped off the desk and transformed into Professor McGonagall herself. The two boys stared in amazement.

"That was bloody brilliant." Ron complimented. Professor McGonagall didn't look too pleased.

"Thank you for that assessment, Mr. Weasley. Perhaps if I were to transfigure Mr. Potter and yourself into a pocket watch, that way one of you might be on time." She said sternly. Harry looked at Ron.

"We got lost." Harry said. McGonagall's look didn't change.

"Then perhaps a map? I trust you don't need one to find your seats." She said. Harry and Ron sighed as McGonagall walked away. Harry took his seat next to [Y/N]. [Y/N] leaned over.

"Next time, I'll leave a trail of bread crumbs for the two of you to follow." She whispered. Harry rolled his eyes.

"Shut up, [Y/N]." He growled slightly, making [Y/N] chuckle before getting back to work.

Later on, inside Snape's potions classroom, the students were chattering, sitting near steaming cauldrons. The door slammed open and Snape came rushing in, his robes fluttering as he walked. [Y/N] could tell that Snape was going to be her least favorite teacher.

"There will be no foolish wand waving or silly incantations in this class," Snape said, turning to face the class. "As such, I don't expect many of you to appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is potion making. However, for those select few," his eyes drifted to Malfoy, who smirked. "Who possess the predisposition, I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses. I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory and even put a stopper in death." Snape said. [Y/N]'s eyebrows rose slightly. Snape's gaze wondered over to see Harry, writing what Snape said in his lecture down. In Snape's view, Harry wasn't paying attention. "Then again, maybe some of you have come to Hogwarts in possession of abilities so formidable that you feel confidant enough to not...pay...attention." Snape said loudly, looking at Harry. [Y/N] nudged Harry. He looked at her and she nodded her head to Snape, making Harry put his quill down. Snape then walked to where he could speak to Harry more properly. "Mr. Potter. Our new, celebrity. Tell me, what would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?" Snape asked. Hermione's hand shot up. Harry shook his head and shrugged. "You don't know? Well, let's try again. Where, Mr. Potter, would you look if I asked you to find me a bezoar?" Snape asked. Again, Hermione rose her hand. Harry shook his head.

"I don't know, sir." Harry said. Snape questioned him again.

"And what is the difference between monkshood and wolfbane?" Snape asked. Hermione's hand shot up for a final time. [Y/N] sighed and rolled her eyes. She was getting tired of this.

"I don't know, sir." Harry said. Snape hummed.

"Pity. Clearly, fame isn't everything, is it, Mr. Potter?" Snape asked. The two glared at each other for some time, making [Y/N] a little uneasy. What exactly did Snape have against Harry, a boy he hadn't met until he had arrived at the Sorting Ceremony.
