Harry's Prerogative

Harry watched as Elsa taught him how to draw an apple. He can draw a simple one with crayon but he wanted to draw something better. Nanna wasn't great with drawing. Not with her shaking hands. Uncle Danny draw like him but Harry think he was just trolling him since Harry had seen him draw complicated things before. With lots of lines and numbers. Hmm...maybe Uncle Danny can't draw without his rulers?

Elsa was the only person he could turn to. He just wanted to make Nanna happy. But somehow that turned into an actual art class. Elsa taught him how to choose his colors, how to paint depth, and many more things about art that he didn't know. Now, the pretty boring painting of flowers that Grandpa Gandalf gave Nanna looked more interesting as he tried to apply what Elsa taught him about drawing onto figuring out the painting.

Though she have yet to teach him how to make butterflies fly all over his painting like the one that Nanna have.

"Harry, are you listening?"

Harry nodded, "Shadow and lighting are important when drawing something lifelike,"

Elsa smiled, "Correct. Very smart of you,"

Harry tried not to feel so pleased but it was getting harder and harder after that evening with the snake. He tried to think she was lying but the more he watched her, the more he realized that she wasn't. She didn't act any different with him whether his family was there or not. She didn't lie about him to Uncle Danny or Nanna. She never raised her hand no matter how frustrating he gets. If anything, Uncle Danny was the one to give him corporeal punishment.

Oh, he didn't hurt Harry like Uncle Vernon. His butt might feel sore from the spanking but they weren't blue and bruised or even bleeding. Uncle Danny only hit him hard enough to feel pain but stopped the moment Harry started crying. After that, instead of starving Harry and locking him in the supply closet, he had Harry kneel down on his legs and held his arms up while facing the mirror, telling him to think what he did wrong and to report back once his (literal) reflection time was done. It wasn't even the whole day! Just long enough that Harry didn't want to be punished like that ever again.

Elsa was different. She didn't put her hands on him. But she made sure that he understood what he did wrong and make him feel properly guilty because she was right. Like him pulling a tantrum with the snake so close to Nanna and making the snake feel like he was in danger with the two women with him. Nanna could have been bitten and the snake was dangerous not because he have sharp fangs, he admitted that he have poison in his fangs and that he could kill the two easily. Harry didn't want anyone to die just because he was upset.

Every attempt to force her to show her real face failed. She wasn't anything like Aunt Petunia. She wasn't pretending to be nice. She didn't try to make him look bad. Sure, she was mean as a teacher but Harry thinks that all teachers were mean. Uncle Danny was mean with his numbers too. So did Nanna when she was teaching him letters. But none of them called him stupid when he made mistake. They only said; try again. When he felt like he was about to scream from his mistakes, they told him to stop and do something else.

Dora also liked Elsa. When Harry played the violin, she joined them by playing the harp, the flute, or the piano. She can play the violin too but she never took Harry's violin from him just to show what she can do. She asked but if he refused, she gave up and turned to a different instrument. Elsa can also sing and even when Harry hated her, he admitted that she have a really nice voice. Sometimes, Nanna will ask her to sing and Elsa will sing just for her.

Not to say she was perfect. No. Harry had never met a woman that liked to eat sweets as much as Elsa. Aunt Petunia would be horrified by the amount she can eat. But Elsa also ate salads but only because they were the easiest meal for her to make. She wasn't a great cook like Aunt Petunia. She burned her eggs, for one. But she can make really delicious drinks. Also, if it was easy and can be made without the stove or the oven, like sandwiches, she can make them. Although she will spend some time in the kitchen learning to be a better cook from Nanna or Pepper.

And unlike Aunt Petunia, she was great at gardening. Or maybe that was just her magic. Flowers bloomed just by her passing by. Flowers died when Uncle Danny passed by, though. His magic kill things.

These days, he often thought about Elsa and what she was meant to do here. Now that he wasn't so anxious around her, he noticed a lot of things that changed since her arrival. For one, Uncle Danny spend more time with him and Nanna. It didn't matter that she wasn't there. But he often would prefer her there. Sometimes he acted like she was a shield or something. Harry wasn't sure. But Nanna and him would feel better with her around than without her around.

Elsa makes the house prettier. The garden was always colorful and butterflies will flutters all around. There were other birds besides ravens, crows, and vultures. Unlike before, where the garden was in a perpetual dying state and was only sticking around because of Pepper. Even Pepper spent more time at home. She used to disappear whenever Uncle Danny was at home. But these days, whether Uncle was away or at home, she will be around to help them and Nanna. She liked Elsa a lot and would do anything for her.

Elsa never asked her to bully Harry, though. If anything, she treated Pepper like a wise teacher for things like cooking and cleaning. It took Pepper months to stop Harry from wiping things and she won't let Elsa even begin despite her request to at least learn. So Elsa was also bad at cleaning, unlike Aunt Petunia. She was certainly not wife material... at least if he compared her to Aunt Petunia. But Nanna would say that Aunt Petunia was a terrible choice to compare anyone to.

Uncle Danny's face will look stormy if he ever mention the Dursley.

Now, one would think that Harry will forget about the Dursley. But he didn't. Rather, he couldn't. He was smart and he remember things well. But that also meant that he can't just forget about the Dursley. Though their faces faded with time, growing more and more blurry, the things they did to him wasn't as easily forgotten. Not when that was his earliest memories and his life before Nanna.

But he have happier memories now!

...even if that included Elsa.

Harry looked at the water and swore he saw white eyes staring back. Feeling creep out, he turned back and reenter his home before calling for his Uncle, "Uncle Danny! There's a ghost in the swimming pool!"

He burst into the man's room and found his Uncle still in bed. As usual, unlike the second day Elsa was with them, she wasn't in the room. He climbed into bed and poked at the freezing cold man, "Uncle Danny? There's a ghost in the swimming pool,"

His Uncle was such a sleepy head in the morning. He was a light sleeper but he can also sleep like he was dead. The man slowly came around, his chest finally moving instead of the stillness of before. The first time Harry saw him sleeping, he thought he was dead. Well, Nanna said Uncle Danny was indeed dead but he was also alive. A Schrodinger, she said.

Harry's favorite pair of eyes opened and he yawned wider than normal. His Uncle can be very creepy but Harry was used to it, even if he was scared sometimes. After a few more moments, he asked, "What ghost?"

Harry pointed the glass wall overlooking the back garden and the swimming pool, "In the water. It have white eyes and...looked like a horse?"

Danny sat up and picked him, "Come on. Let's go see what's the problem,"

He stopped by the door, set Harry down, and put on a dress robe because they now have Elsa in the house. Uncle Danny can't just walk around without a shirt in just his pants anymore. That would be inappropriate and ungentlemanly. He then picked Harry up like a sack of potato under his arms and floated down, too lazy to walk. It didn't take long to look at the pool and saw the weird creepy horse staring back.

He hummed, "That's not a ghost,"

Harry looked at him, "What is it, then?"

Uncle Danny smiled, "That's Elsa's problem,"

Elsa can have problem too? Harry thought about it and remembered the big mirror across the fireplace in Uncle Danny's library that he was unhappy about. He asked the man, "Is the horse in the water one of the Other Lot?"

Uncle Danny smiled, "Yup!" He put Harry down and ruffled his hair, "Smart kid,"

Harry smiled, pleased by his praise. Uncle Danny praise him often but only when he earned it. Unlike Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon with Dudley. Dudley can roll around like a wheel barrel and they will praise him like he found cure for Nanna's sickness. But Uncle Danny, Nanna...and Elsa...will praise Harry when he was being smart or good.

Uncle Danny knocked on the white door with pretty painted motifs from Elsa's lost home, something Uncle Danny told Harry once when he asked the man why Elsa can't just go home instead, "Elsa? There's a water horse in the swimming pool,"

A few moments later, Elsa came out with her hair all loose, wearing a silk robe over her sleeping gown. She blinked at them, "A water horse?"

Uncle Danny looked at Harry and Harry explained, "...he's creepy and have white eyes,"

Elsa's face brightened, "Oh? It must be Nokk. He must have found me," She smiled at Harry, "It is fortunate that you didn't swim when you notice him. Nokk have been known to drown anyone who kept secrets and was dishonest. Even if the person they were lying to was themselves,"

Uncle Danny didn't look happy about, "Can it not?"

Elsa smiled, "I'll talk to him. Now, excuse me as I fix myself,"

The two stared at the closed door. Harry looked at his Uncle who smiled, "So proper," He picked the boy, "Come on, let's watch the water horse and made sure Jazz didn't scare herself with it,"

Harry smiled as he held his Uncle's big hand in his smaller one. Uncle painted his nails black and his knuckles have scars around them. His nails were sharp and he was careful with them. Nanna once painted glow in the dark cartoon ghosts on them for fun. They were already gone, though. Harry had liked them. He played with his Uncle's fingers while Uncle Danny kept an eye on the horse that sometimes peeked over the water. It was cool and scary to see the water rising with a pair of glowing white eyes.

"I'm apologize for taking my time,"

Harry looked to see Elsa walking down the stairs, ready for the day. She wore a pastel blue blouse with lace sleeves paired with lavender colored pleated skirt. Her hair was in her usual braids with a violet ribbon. She walked through the door and smiled, "Hello, friend. Are the others with you?"

The horse came out was completely made of water but it was big and tall. Harry have seen horses on the telly but he had never seen one up close. Elsa held out a hand and curtsied while pressing her temple against his muzzle, changing him from pure water into one with a coat of frost. She stood up, "It seems all the Spirits of the Elements are here," She looked at Danny, "I will find Bruni before he start a fire,"

She turned her face towards the forest and the wind started blowing, "Oh, hello Gale. It is nice to feel you once more. Do you know where Bruni is? I worry that his anxiety could start a fire," The wind circled her, causing her skirt to wrap around her legs, before picking up a random leaf and flew away with it, showing her a direction. She looked at them, "Excuse me,"

Harry watched as she ran after the leaf and looked at Uncle Danny, "Are we going to see something from the earth next?"

Uncle Danny chuckled, "Maybe," He eyed the Nokk in the swimming pool, "Why don't we get breakfast instead and let Elsa deal with her guests? I'm afraid no swimming for you today,"

Uncle Danny made some really fluffy pancakes and served just as Nanna joined them, "Good morning..." She looked at Harry, "Why are you in just your swimming trunk?"

Harry pouted, "There's a Nokk in the swimming pool and I can't swim because Nokk drowns dishonest people...even if they were just lying to themselves," He wasn't about to chance it. Harry didn't think he was a liar but maybe there was something he lied about? Better to be safe than sorry.

Nanna looked at Uncle Danny who shrugged, "Elsa's handling them now,"

A few minutes later, Elsa came back but with a company on her shoulder. It was a little lizard that looked like a pretty mix of purple, pink, and blue with a mane of pink flames on it's back. Elsa sprinkled some snow over it, dousing the flames, before settling it down on the dining table, "This is Bruni, the Spirit of Fire. He's very shy so be gentle with him. He might be small but he can be very destructive with his power,"

Harry looked at Bruni who studied everyone on the table. He looked at Uncle Danny and approached the man who looked at him warily, his full mouth chewing. After a staring contest, Uncle Danny offered a small cut of pancake with crispy chicken bacon to the magical lizard. Bruni sniffed at the offering before snatching it out of Uncle's hand with his tongue. After that, he squeaked a little before rubbing his little face against Uncle Danny's hand. After that, he turned to Harry and Nanna.

Nanna only giggled at the lizard, giving a small offering of her own food. It placated the lizard that it squeaked happily at her before turning to Harry. Harry tensed at big dark eyes landed on him. He picked a fruit and offered it to Bruni. Bruni sniffed at the fruit slice before biting it out of Harry's fingers. Harry smiled as Bruni finished the fruit and returned to Elsa.

Uncle Danny asked, "Any special needs? Our fireplaces are...not exactly ideal. Sure, we have almost to no guest...on the human side. But ghosts come in and out from mine since it isn't really a fireplace. As for the horse...well, Harry likes swimming,"

Harry appreciated that his Uncle included him as the reason why the creepy water horse can't be in the swimming pool. He didn't want to die from drowning. Uncle Vernon once left him in the basin long enough that he slipped and almost drowned. Aunt Petunia managed to rescue him but that memory stayed with Harry.

Elsa hummed, "The Nokk didn't mind as long as there is a body of water. Even the bird bath over there would do. Perhaps a lantern for Bruni? Or he could stay in the corner of the fireplace. He isn't really big, after all,"

Uncle Danny looked at the small fire lizard, "As long as he doesn't burn down the house, I don't mind. Just make sure Nokk is not in the swimming pool,"

With the discussion of the two done, Elsa sat down and partake her breakfast. She kept the lizard cool and fed it random things. Nanna asked her how she met them and Elsa told her about the Enchanted Forest north of Arendelle, a long forgotten kingdom in Norway, and how she awoken the Great Spirit there. It demanded her bloodline to right the wrong that her grandfather, in his fear of magic, had done to the small magical community living in the forest; the Northuldra. The community had long since moved away when witch hunting started becoming a frequent thing with her help before she completely sealed herself away from the changing world.

Since then, Harry sometimes watched her with the Nokk. She rode him a few times but she never really left their home. She never jumped over their black walls and iron fences that surrounded their home. She would whisper things to them before returning inside.

Harry had Pepper explain to him about Nokk and the house elf nodded, "Yes. Mistress be right. Nokk judge and kill liars. You must be honest,"

So now he stood by the path over the wetland of their natural pool. Elsa said that Nokk can be anywhere as long as there was water. So he decided to ask the Nokk about Elsa.

He called, "Hey. Nokk. Are you there?"

There was nothing but silence. Harry frowned. Maybe the Nokk sensed that Harry wanted to ask about Elsa and was loyal to her so he won't appear? Well, this was dud. He was about to stand up and leave when the water shifted before swelling, becoming a horse's head. Harry gulped as those glowing white eyes landed on him. He can feel it, the malevolent power in the form of a horse's head.

He just realized that maybe he was doing something really dumb. But...

He asked, "Is Elsa honest about me deciding if she can be my mum?"

Harry wasn't sure if the Nokk can reply but he felt like the horse was insulted by his question. After a moment, the Nokk nodded. Harry blinked at that before his chest felt warm. He gasped as he accepted the answer.

He patted his burning cheeks, "For real?"

He didn't want to hope. Not from a stranger. He trusted Nanna because Nanna took him away from the Dursley. He trusted Uncle Danny because Uncle Danny felt safe and he made Nanna so happy. But he wasn't sure about Elsa. He didn't want to be hopeful only to have that hope destroyed. But Nokk won't lie because Nokk was a spirit of honesty. Pepper said so and Pepper won't lie to Harry. House elves are like that when they gave their loyalty to someone.

Harry smiled, "Thank you, Nokk. Sorry if I...asked a stupid question,"

The spirit snorted before returning to water.

His biggest dilemma settled, he turned to the house. Without his fear and worry clouding it, he can see it clearly now. Elsa was nice. She can't really cook or clean but she was nicer than Aunt Petunia. She never speak ill of Harry or Nanna or Uncle Danny to any of them. She have been nothing but sincere. He just didn't want to believe it because he was afraid that it was nothing but lies. It took him a long time to warm up to Nanna. And even though Uncle Danny can be creepy, he never hurt Harry like Uncle Vernon and he was really awesome!

But Elsa was a stranger. She just appeared one day and said that she was there to marry Uncle Danny but only if Harry said yes. Harry didn't want a liar. He loved his family and he didn't want someone to steal them. He didn't want to go back to the Dursley. Even if they didn't return him to the Dursley, what if they became like the Dursley because Elsa lied about Harry?

He wanted to believe her but experience taught him to be suspicious.

But Nokk confirmed the opposite of his fears and now Harry can believe her with a clear conscience. He will try to be good for her, just like he was good for Nanna and Uncle Danny. He still didn't want to call her 'Mum' because he have yet to call Uncle Danny 'Dad'. It would be weird to call someone not related to him 'Mum' when he can't even call Uncle Danny 'Dad'.

One night, he caught his Uncle still sitting at his office table when everyone else was already in bed. He shyly approached the man before stopping, waiting to be acknowledged. This was the first time he stayed up this late but he have a good reason! He needed to know why he can call Elsa 'Mum' even though he didn't have a 'Dad'.

Uncle Danny looked up at him, "What is it, Harry?"

Harry fidgeted for a moment before finally asking, "Why should I call Elsa 'Mum'? I don't have a 'Dad'?"

Uncle Danny smiled, "Because when you decided that she can be your 'Mum', I'll marry her. Then, I'll adopt you and be your 'Dad',"

Harry blinked, "What? Why can't you be my 'Dad' now?"

Uncle Danny leaned back, "I could...but without her, I won't be a very good 'Dad'," At his confused look, Uncle Danny explained, "You noticed it, didn't you Harry? I hurt you and Jazz just by being around. Things die around me. Pepper had to weed the garden for poisonous plants often because of me. So I stayed away so I won't hurt either of you more. I can't be a proper 'Dad' like that. Not when I have to leave you just to keep you alive. But when Elsa is here, she keep those dangerous parts of me at bay. She make you healthier just being here, you know? Even Nanna is healthier than before, even if she can't be cured. That's why I bring her here. She told me that she will refuse to marry me if you don't want her here. But she will stay, even if you hate her, for you,"

That settled it for Harry. That Elsa will stay to keep him safe from even Uncle Danny even if Harry hated her. He thought of all the things he did to make it difficult for her. She had expected that. But still, she stayed. Because without her, Uncle Danny can't stay. Because he make Harry sick just being around him too long. But Elsa can make him stay around Harry without making Harry sick. Uncle Danny loved Harry that much.

Harry still don't really get it. But he can feel their love for him. Then, that morning when he woke up with both his Uncle and Elsa in one bed made sense. He was scared and Uncle Danny didn't want him to sleep alone so he asked Elsa to sleep with him so Harry won't fall sick. She didn't have to. It was improper. They weren't married. But she did it for Harry. Harry wrapped his arms around his favorite Uncle Danny, "Can I call you Dad now?"

Uncle Danny asked, "Are you sure, Harry?"

Harry smiled, "Yeah. She's my Mum,"
