Crown of Heroes
Luna Lovegood woke to the sound of Dan chasing Spooky somewhere in Uncle Danny's office. It have been almost a year since she started living with the Khaos and the lived up to their name. Well, at least the boys did. She and Mother Elsa would spent most of their days studying. Mother Elsa loved her history, both the magical side and the mundane side. Luna also loved watching National Geography on the telly with Mother Elsa.
It was such a pity that such technology could not function around magic. Just imagine the sort of wonders that they could just share with the rest of the magical world?!
That was why she listened whenever Harry and Uncle Danny talked about their family project; Ether Line. She won't understand until she finished reading the texts on Ancient Runes and Arithmancy. Until then, she won't be able to help much. She really wanted to see a world where wizards and witches can run their own shows like the mundane world.
Yes. She adopted their way of calling the non-magical people.
Waking up fully, she started her day with her ablution ritual. She then stared at the shoes by the door. They were just indoor slippers. However, she couldn't bring herself to wear them. Each time she thought of wearing them, she will see the only thing left of her Mum. In the end, she put on her magic plums earring and got about her day. She was given the room besides Harry, with decorations that made her feel at home.
Luna loved flowers and nature and it showed in her room. She loved her room. There were so many plants inside and the temperature was the perfect climate for the flowering plants to bloom. Soft yellow was the main color of her bedroom, unlike Harry who liked the stars and the planets and games. Although he also owned a flying broom, he preferred to fly on his own.
Living with the Khaos opened Luna's eyes to more of the world around her. She have always known about the fey but she also knew that they hid themselves because humans were icky. But she would never expect to see them visit Mother Elsa now and then. They also blessed her eyes, allowing her to see the wrackspurt and the nargles without the special goggles that her Mum invented but was lost in...on that day. Because of them, she thought about wearing corks. Mother Elsa have them carved and made them fashionable for her.
Mother Elsa taught her, "Beauty is important, no matter how shallow it seems. After all, your appearance is your first impression and first impression is very important. Take good care of it, my dear,"
So Luna did her best to have a clean appearance like Mother Elsa. But she wasn't all like Mother Elsa. She loved her hair and Mother Elsa taught her how to take great care of them. She wore them down to her knees, loving how they flutter against her shoulders. Sometimes, she fancied them for a cape down her back. Mother Elsa often told her how she reminded her of a cousin who grew long hair for their magical properties. Luna wondered if her hair can have similar properties.
Those shampoos that Mother Elsa shared with her was really good.
Luna stepped out of her bedroom, with their large window and hanging plants and soft yellows, to see Harry running around. He excitedly grabbed her upon seeing her, "Today is the day!"
Luna recalled what was so important and she grinned, "Today is the day,"
She remembered those painful weeks of being unable to say anything and how patient Harry and his family had been. She remembered slowly opening up and forcing her voice to come out. Mother Elsa was patient as she helped her overcome her grief. She was sad because not only did she lose her Mum, Papa also disappeared. He sent her his work every months, though, so she supposed he still loved her. But she cannot help feeling abandoned when he begged Uncle Danny to take her in.
She remembered Uncle Danny's fury and disappointment in Papa. That was when she realized that Papa had done something terrible to her. Would she even notice it had she stayed back at the Rook?
Luna joined Harry as he paced the front yard. She smiled at the flower fairies hiding in the buds, peeking at Harry. She have always known that there were more to the world but being able to see them clearly was something else. She started seeing them after...after. Though it can be scary, she cherished it.
This must be what her Mum was working on. Although her projects had been scraped and erased by her colleagues as the Ministry deemed them too dangerous. It was all the more reason to consider this ability of hers as something like a legacy from her Mum.
"Is that...is that it?"
Luna looked up to see Harry hopping on the path from their gate. She heard the fairies chittering in their whisper soft voices. She spied an owl flying in their direction, knowing that it must be Spooky as Spooky was the only bird that can get past their extremely tight barrier against trespasser. Uncle Danny must have lent Spooky to Hogwarts so that Harry can get his letter.
Harry snatched the falling letter from the sky as Spooky flew straight into Uncle Danny's office/library. She watched as he paused from ripping the letter open. She knew that Mother Elsa taught Harry to be a gentleman so he must remembered to share the good news with the rest of their family. He excitedly skipped towards her and grabbed her hand, "Come on!"
Luna followed him.
Luna could barely remember a day of her life without Harry. It felt like the very first memory she could recall was Harry calling her Pinkie Pie at a Samhain Festival. That was her first and clearest memory. After that, she had always known him as Harry. Harry, her best friend. Her very first friend. She knew she have always known Ginny but Ginny felt like her sister from a different family. So Harry was her very first friend. Although Harry didn't like Ginny for whatever reason, Luna hoped that they will get along one day.
They still visit the Weasley and Luna still played with Ginny.
Still, when she learned that Harry was the famous Harry Potter, she wondered what the big deal was. He was just Harry to her. And Harry had looked so very happy when she treated him no different from before. It was then that it struck her; being famous must be very lonely. So Luna never argued when Harry tried monopolizing her. He wasn't very good at it either. He would always play with Ron after glaring at Ginny before handing Luna to her. It was clear to her that he didn't want her to hate him for keeping her to himself.
He was very sweet.
She missed him dearly when he went on that years long trip. But he never forget about her. Even when he was everywhere and making friends with everyone, he would always send her something from his trip. They were precious presents for Luna. She kept them in a very special box. He even found a blue and white striped conch shell with a white star in the middle. It was very pretty and she wondered what sort of animal it was.
He took so many photos of all the kind of animals and creatures they came across on the trip. He wrote extensively on the sort of food he ate and what they tasted like, giving her a lengthy review as well as why she should or shouldn't try them should she found herself in the area. He would send postcards and the local toys, both magical and mundane, for her to experience. Her life was colorful with Harry as the palette.
So...knowing that she will be left behind while he go to Hogwarts...
Harry cheered, showing off his letter of invitation, "I got my Hogwarts' letter!!"
Uncle Danny was sitting on his not-magic chair, patting Spooky like that villain from a movie with his cat, smiling at Harry. Meanwhile, Mother Elsa was doing some checklist besides him on the couch. Dan snorted, lounging like a lazy cat on the back of the couch, "Well? What are you waiting for?"
Harry proudly cracked open the wax seal and brought out the letter, "Dear Mr. Harry Potter-Khaos, we are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts' School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all the necessary books and equipment. Terms begins on 1st September. We await your owl no later than 31st July. Yours sincerely, Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress,"
Uncle Danny smiled, brandishing an already prepared answer letter, "Second round, Spooky,"
His owl hooted at him, taking the letter with his beak, and flew off with the flaps of his sail like wings. Aunt Elsa reached out to Harry, "List," Harry took out the list and handed it to her. She took a moment to read them. She then nodded, "Well, I guess we should get going to Diagon Alley then,"
It did not take long for them to reach Diagon Alley. Uncle Danny arrived first, followed by her and then finally, Mother Elsa and Harry. Everyone turned to them and some glanced at her bare feet. Luna didn't care. She would rather be barefooted than wearing shoes and be haunted by thoughts of her Mum's last moment. Still, Mother Elsa added a little something for her soles so that she would not be hurt by anything that might be on the road. It was easier at home as the floors were clean. It was a different game when outside, though.
They headed to Madam Malkin's first. Harry stood a long while, waiting for the measurement to stop measuring his everything. Luna noticed one measuring tape snaking its way towards Uncle Danny only for it to drop to the floor lifelessly when Mother Elsa flicked a finger at it. Luna giggled even as Mother Elsa tried some of the buttery soft fabric against her. Luna have a warn tone and warm color made her look lively. At least, that was what the fashion savvy Mother Elsa said.
Uncle Danny can wear the same wardrobe for the rest of his life and he won't even notice.
So does Harry.
Boys.
Anyway, Luna liked watching Mother Elsa and Uncle Danny interact. Especially outside, like this. It was obvious that people saw them as extremely attractive. So they often had to 'protect' each other from unwanted attention. Harry will also often get annoyed whenever some witch or wizard approach his father. He would also often tell anyone who looked at his mother disrespectfully that his Dad will throw them into the River Thames without remorse, regardless of gender.
He had done it once to a witch in India who became very handsy on Mother Elsa, using the excuse that they were both women so she could put her hand wherever. Luna knew this because Harry ranted about it in his letter. Mother Elsa had asked her to stop and was very uncomfortable. In the end, Uncle Danny have had enough of being 'polite' so he 'politely' threw her into the Ganges by teleporting her over the water with a snap of his fingers. It was a memorable story for Luna as she did not know about lesbians then.
As for Mother Elsa towards Uncle Danny, she was more direct. If she noticed unwanted attention, she would snuggle up against Uncle Danny and let him do the rest. Like right now, where Uncle Danny had her plastered to his side and squeezing her against him. Once Harry was done and she bought a few bolts of fabric that caught her attention, Mother Elsa followed them out.
Next on their list was the wand. Harry grabbed her hand and Luna felt how sweaty they were. She wasn't repulsed. In fact, she understood that he was anxious. So she squeezed his hand back.
Upon entry, the wandmaker made his presence known, "Mr. Khaos...my wands are whining about you. Please step outside. You're killing them,"
Luna understood immediately what he meant. Uncle Danny did have a problem of killing things simply from being. He was like a big cuddly and happy Dementor. Not that she think he would appreciate the comparison. If anything, she felt that Uncle Danny could certainly do a German suplex on a Dementor without being affected by their passive abilities to suck all joy from the world. If anything, the Dementors would probably either run from him or bow to him.
Uncle Danny smiled at Harry, messing his hair a little with his giant hands, "Be true,"
So Luna and Mother Elsa stood in a corner as Harry go through a pile of wands. At one point, the wandmaker whispered "I wonder" before handing Harry a wand. It sputtered something in Harry's hand, causing the wandmaker to frown, "I thought for sure..."
Mother Elsa asked, "Is something wrong?"
Ollivander shook his head, "The core of this wand was from the same phoenix whose brother gave him his scar. Yew, 13 and ½ inches, with phoenix tail feather. Had I known what that wand will go out and do..." He cleared his throat, "Never mind that! It is clear that the core is correct but the wood is wrong. Hmm..." He pulled out a roll of what could have been mistaken for a brush scroll used by painters. Instead of brushes, he revealed...woods. He grinned, "I will make you your wand. Custom! You already found your core. Your just need the right wood. Now...make your choice,"
Harry took a moment study what was on offer. Luna watched as his hand hovered over the row of polished woods. His hand stopped over a handsome silvery wood and Ollivander gasped. He gestured for Harry to hand it to him and he nodded, "Yes...the holly was missing something vital. Holly was the king of summer and autumn. He will always fall to the hands of oak and arise once more to reclaim his throne as winter thaw. Perseverance, endurance, it is a wood for those with a spiritual quest and a temper to quell. But aspen, on the other hand, is the crown of heroes. Capable of bridging life and death. Capable of keeping the hero safe on his quest to the underworld and return just as safely to the living world,"
Harry blinked, "Really?"
Luna thought it made sense. Because Harry was always in between Life and Death. Between Mother Elsa who represented Life and Uncle Danny who commanded Death, Harry was already marked by Life and Death. She looked at Mother Elsa who asked, "And what of the core?"
Ollivander hummed, "Well, it seems that the phoenix feather within the holly wand was reacting and perhaps he was most suited for a phoenix feather core. However, the other feathers of phoenixes did not react at all. I wonder..."
Uncle Danny came in at that point and was immediately glared at by the wandmaker. The man grimaced and raised his hand, "I just thought perhaps a core from me would work? I mean...you use magical creature parts as wand cores, right? What about me? Uh...maybe my hair?"
Harry's eyes widened, "Dad? Don't you think that's a bit dangerous?"
Uncle Danny said, "Well, phoenixes are known for death and resurrection. But they are also known to be healers beyond compare. If Elsa and I paired together, won't that be better? I mean...I'm a bit like a phoenix myself," He sniffed, scratching his nose bridge. Luna always wonder how he never hurt himself with his claws.
Ollivander frowned, "I see...we could give it a try,"
Uncle Danny stepped deeper into the shop, making Ollivander whimper while caressing his wands. Mother Elsa stepped closer to Uncle Danny and Ollivander blinked. He seemed to realize something and Luna wondered if he realized that Life and Death were always waltzing with each other. Uncle Danny plucked a strand from his head, the strand coming alive from deep ebony into moonlit white, like marble tombstone under a full moon night.
Ollivander accepted the strand with a glass plate, staring at the two and tilting his head, as if listening. He then picked up the polished but incomplete aspen wood that Harry had touched and placed it together with the Uncle Danny's hair. He tilted his head, listening. He then smiled with excitement, "Oh!" He gestured at Harry, "Come and hover your hand!"
Harry did just that and it felt like the shadows and light came alive. Luna thought she can hear the rustling of leaves. Ollivander suddenly danced, "Merlin! I have never hear such a sound from an incomplete wand in my life!" He stared at Mother Elsa, "You...somehow the wood that this boy chooses sang in your presence. And you!" He looked at Uncle Danny, whose back stiffened from the sudden attention, "Your hair was unlike any other materials I have ever used for a core. Also, I can feel it. Already, it chooses the boy. Such temper it has. Such steely determination and ruthless efficiency. The aspen tempered this with a sort of icy coolness..."
Mother Elsa hummed before reaching for the wood on the glass plate. A single touch and frost covered the wood because disappearing. Ollivander sighed, "Ah...harmony. This wand will be unlike any I have created and will ever create," He picked up the plate and started mumbling as he headed for the back of his shop.
Uncle Danny hummed, "I better step back out before I 'kill' all the wands in this shop,"
Mother Elsa giggled, "You do that,"
It did not take before Ollivander came back out, a half an hour since Uncle Danny stepped out, and presented a deceptively delicate looking wand. It was quite long, 15 inches, and was as pale as a freshly polished dagger. The chatoyence on it's surface reminded Luna of Damascus forged blades. The handle was sternly carved like the hilt of a sword. But at the same time, it was as if the wood had come alive and grew branches that served as the guard. They reminded Luna a bit like fairy wings. Especially when sometimes, ghostly golden leaves appeared on the guards. It was a very beautiful wand.
Ollivander presented the wand to Harry and Harry stared at it. Then, with reverence, he picked it up. Even Luna can feel the soft breeze carrying fairy songs brushing against her ears, as the same time a chill fell around her shoulders like the touch of death. Ollivander smiled, "Truly, such a bizarre wand. Fairies and ghosts were never friends but in your wand, they found harmony...just like your parents,"
Harry frowned, "But there was a phoenix song there?"
Ollivander sighed, "The phoenix feather from before somehow 'broke out' of it's holly casing and joined into the wand. I had never seen such behavior but at the same time, it hasten the creation of this wand. I would usually take longer to create a wand, especially with such a mysterious material as your father's hair. Truly, he was much like a phoenix but not. However, it was as if the wand wants to be created and soon. It practically create itself,"
Harry looked at the wand in his hand, "I see..."
Ollivander hummed, "Aspen wands are wands of duelists. They are highly desired by witches and wizards for not only it's resemblance to ivory but also for it's penchant for charmwork. However, it is also a wand of revolutionists. I expect great things from you, Mr. Potter,"
Harry added, "Khaos,"
Ollivander blinked before coughing, "Ah, yes. Mr. Potter-Khaos,"
As they finally leave the shop, Harry sighed before sheathing his wand into the holster belt he bought from Ollivander. Ollivander was extremely happy that he didn't just shove it into his back pocket or something. They found Uncle Danny waiting nearby, eating ice-cream and being stared at. Well, Luna knew that he was pretending to be a vampire. So it was a matter of great curiosity for the surrounding witches and wizards as he was standing under the sun and eating a normal ice-cream and not something blood flavored. He looked up at them as they approached him, "Done with the wand?"
Harry sighed, "The phoenix feather add itself,"
Uncle Danny paused for a moment before shoving the rest of his ice-cream into his mouth, an action that would normally cause brain freeze but not Uncle Danny. Or Mother Elsa for that matter, Luna thinks. Then again, they have a habit of starting situated winter wonderland when it got too hot in the summer. Uncle Danny patted Harry's back, "It's just a tool, Harry. Your choices and decisions matter more,"
Harry looked at his waist, "The wand does not like being called a tool,"
Uncle Danny hummed, "A partner then. But one that follow your actions instead of just making it's own,"
They went to all the necessary stores. At one point, at the bookstore, Luna noticed a mother and father pair that were obviously parents of a new blood looking at them. The mother whispered something to the father who nodded, eyes seemingly recognizing Uncle Danny and Mother Elsa. Luna turned her head away, choosing to follow Harry deeper into the bookstore and watched as Uncle Danny carried numerous books for Harry and Mother Elsa as well as his own. Most of them were about runeswork and arithmancy.
Harry pouted as he realized that he couldn't take everything to school, "How am I supposed to continue my research if I can't take them all?"
In the end, they decided to go to the luggage store and Mother Elsa immediately buy one that opened to an expansive library. The proprietor told them that his father once sold one that can carry a whole zoo inside. Harry eagerly took the one and they placed all their bought items inside. The bag looked like a business suitcase with hard leather cover. They reminded Luna of those bags used by those shady peoples in the movie that opened up loads of mundane paper money inside...or drugs.
They then found more leather made items and Uncle decided that Harry shoulder wear shoulder holster for his wand and wallet but was told that they didn't have them in store as the do not know what he was talking about. In the end, Uncle Danny bought a bolt of dragon's leather hide and put it away, his face that now familiar expression of impending project. He was also staring at Harry's bag with that same look.
Luna suspected that these items will took a different appearance once he was done with them. After few more round in Diagon Alley, they decided to return home for a late lunch as the crowd grew thicker.

Trivia;-
Harry Potter Lore:
The proper owner of the aspen wand was often an accomplished duellist, or destined to be so, for the aspen wand was one of those particularly suited to martial magic.
Aspen wood mythology:
Of old the aspen was a tree of heroes, whose crowns of trembling leaves gave them the power not only to visit the Underworld, but also to return safely. Similarly, the aspen crowns people placed in ancient burial mounds may have been to allow the spirits of the deceased to return to be reborn. Aspen's Gaelic name is critheann (pronounced cree-an) as in Sron a crithean in Ardgower, (the Gaelic verb for tremble being crith). Highlanders also thought of aspen as a magical tree. An aspen leaf placed under the tongue would make the bearer more eloquent, traditionally a gift of the Faerie Queen. Furthermore there were several Highland folk taboos, including those against using the wood for fishing or agricultural implements, or in house construction. These suggest that the aspen may have been considered a faerie tree on a par with the rowan which has similar taboos.
