A Khaos-tic Christmas
Harry was simply glad to be home and he let it be known by playing the piano. Ron sleepily came into the music room and sat on the sofa, listening to Harry play. He was used to all of Harry's odd nuances. Growing up being his friend, he realized that Harry was just a guy with weird interest and too much ideas in his big brain. He looked to the side to see Luna joining Harry with her silver flute. Personally, Ron knew nothing about music but he did enjoy it whenever Harry decided that music was the best method to express himself.
After he finished on the piano, he looked at Ron, "Want to swim? I haven't swam in ages!"
Ron shrugged before frowning, "But it's snowing?"
Harry grinned, grabbing Luna's hand and taking her along, "The swimming pool is warm!"
Ron followed, "I don't have a swimwear on me, Harry,"
Harry offered, "You can borrow mine!"
And that was how Ron found himself and his brothers soaking in the warm swimming pool in the backyard of the Shrieking Shack. Ron have always been a little envious of the space Harry get growing up. But then he remembered where they were and that envy shriveled like a dried plum. The ghoul in the attic at the Burrow was already bad enough. He didn't want to live knowing that ghosts used his home like a highway.
Danny came out with a tray full of meat. George and Fred crowed in excitement at the sight. Ron sighed as he climbed out, wrapping himself in the thick fluffy bathrobe that Harry had lent him, "Can I help you?"
Danny smiled at Ron and Ron tried not to think too much on how uncannily perfect that man's face was, "Sure. Grab that box there. Want to learn how to season the mundane way?"
Ron curiously looked at the box as he carried them, reading the name on the top of the bottles of spices. Sure, he grew up with great food that his Mum cook, but Molly cooked with magical aid. Not that it taste any worse than normal cooking, it was just other than for punishment, he and his siblings were never allowed in the kitchen. He handed the box of spices to Danny and watched as the man sharpened his knives.
Fred and George joined them and Danny warned them, "No playing with my spices, boys,"
Within the next hour, the smell of grilled meat filled the air and they were enjoying some really great steaks. Ron even learned something new; cooking was fun. Watching Danny turned slabs of raw red meat into delicacies was an experience. No wonder Harry liked barbecues. His friend did mention that his Dad was the best at this!
He looked at Harry to see him laughing with Luna. Ron smiled at that, knowing that those two connect at a level that he couldn't. Although Harry would accompany during free times at Hogwarts, he was always busy writing this down or that down. Ideas that flew over Ron's head, no matter how he tried to listen. He just couldn't wrap his mind around the things that Harry liked pondering about. Though he do understand that there were things in the mundane world that would make his childhood growing up a bore.
Just look at the fun room.
He just knew that his Dad would be spending the rest of his life there, trying to understand how things work. In that regard, Harry was a lot like Arthur. They liked taking mundane things apart and see what they can do with it using magic. Although unlike his Dad, Harry have a solid purpose behind his dismantling. Something about an ongoing project he and Danny have been going through?
Either way, Ron will support his friend...even though Harry's eccentricities can be frustrating to follow at times. Especially when he decided to take Ron to see the hippogriffs lazing about just beyond the low black walls of his home, "Harry!"
Harry huffed, "They are fine, Ron! Just don't blink!"
Ron watched as Luna, barefoot Luna walking on snow without flinching, stepped before the leader of the hippogriffs and maintained eye contact before curtsying like a proper lady witch from historical books and plays. Harry grinned when the leader bowed back and stepped closer so that Luna can pet his head. He looked at Ron, "Come on, Griffin! You're supposed to be a House of Courage!"
Ron whimpered, "Didn't mean I'm scared,"
Well, at least he didn't get eaten by the dangerous magical beast. Still, he stood with his brothers while Harry put Luna on the back of one hippogriff and watched as she flew. When Harry turned to them, Ron shook his head, "Just let me stick with the brooms, Harry,"
Harry pouted, "Pooh! You're missing out!"
Luna's excitedly giggle in the sky while she fly wasn't helping Ron's decision to stick to his brooms. But when one clicked their wicked sharp beak at him, he decided that he'll pass.
After the fun, sort of, outside with the hippogriffs, Harry decided to show Ron his latest games. It was all muggle things and Ron wasn't sure if he can play them. But once Mario Kart's Rainbow Road started playing, all thoughts about magic ruining anything muggle technology disappeared from his mind. All he wanted to do was troll the Twins with banana peels and other manner of sabotaging. Fred and George threatened to maim in his real life but Ron thinks that it was worth it.
Lunch came around and Ron blushed upon seeing Harry's Mum. It was awkward whenever she was around because every boys in his family held a sort of crush on her. But they didn't dare say anything. They had seen how vicious Harry can be towards people that looked at his Mum wrong. Also, Ron dare not attract the ire of Danny. Not even death can save him should his little crush be known.
But Elsa was a dream. She was very nice and Ron wished to find a girl like her one day to make his wife. He envied how sweet she was with Danny. Well, his parents can be sweet on each other too but no kid wanted to see that. They were too close and it was just weird to him whenever he saw his parents do the eyes at each other. But he couldn't help but want what Danny have with Elsa.
After lunch activities were slow as Harry disappeared into the underground laboratory with Danny. Ron rolled his eyes at Fred and George schemed on how to get there. The slight creak by the fireplace caused him to run to the fun room and watched the telly instead. Fright Knight lived to his name and Ron didn't want to know if his sword, the Soul Shredder, did too. He looked to see Luna poking furiously on something in her hand, "What are you doing, Luna?"
She showed him, "I'm making Spooky with the wool and needle,"
Ron stared at the still forming white object and nodded, "I see,"
She was making art but it looked like voodoo to him.
Suddenly, Fred and George where thrown into the fun room by Fright Knight who warned them, "The basement is off limit," He then stood in the doorway, guarding it so that no one can walk past.
Ron scowled at the twins, "Look what you did. Now we are stuck here!"
Fortunately, there was a movie on the telly and the trio of red heads decided to watch that instead. Ron finally realized why Harry called Malfoy 'Home Alone' when he saw the boy playing the main character in the muggle movie. He snorted and explained to the twins why he was laughing. Fred and George took note of all the 'defenses' the boy set up around the house against possible thieves.
By the time they finished the second movie, it was dinner. Elsa came down from the library to call them and ask Fright Knight to go back to his post. Ron won't be so scared of the living armor if it wasn't for the uncanny purple flames that flared to life whenever Fright Knight made his presence known. That, and the creepy green eyes glowing through the helm.
During dinner, Fred and George tried to convince Danny to let them down to the basement but Danny shook his head, "No. I got my projects down there and I am sure you boys know the importance of not sharing your project with anyone prior to completion?"
Fred shared a look with George, "Well, brother mine, he has a point,"
"But can't he at least help us with some of ours?"
Danny quirked a brow, "What sort of project you're talking about? I don't know how I could help though,"
Ron did not believe for a moment that Danny wasn't a wizard. How else will he explain how he summon things to his hands or move items without touching them?
On the morning of Yule, Ron woke up to the scent of festive food wafting from the kitchen in the first floor. He groggily sat up and headed to the bathroom to brush his teeth. He then stepped out of the guest room he was given, fresh and ready and just in time to see Harry ride the railing to the first floor, crowing cheerfully, "PRESENTS~!!"
Ron laughed as he chased after his friend, his brothers following closely behind him as they joined Harry to the back where a tree made of ice was erected from the solidly frozen swimming pool that also turned into an ice rink. He gawked at the magical sight of the crystal branches shimmering with colorful magic, pulsing like a heartbeat. Luna cooed at the sight of a goofy looking snowman that toddled around, "Olaf! You're here!"
Olaf laughed, "Oh, you know me! I'm always here on Christmas!"
Ron blinked, wondering just what the snowman was talking about. Olaf waved his branch arms at the Weasley brothers, "Oh, your Christmas presents are also here. But wait a moment,"
At that moment, a burst of ice revealed a portal from which a tall man in red and bearskin hat walked through. He didn't look like any Father Christmas Ron knew but he checked all the boxes except for the rotund belly. He ho-ho-ho-ed at the gathering children before throwing down his giant red bag, speaking with thick Russian accent, "I finished my round just in time! Kept your house for last too, Dante!"
Danny waved his hand lazily, "Whatever, North. Do your thing,"
North sat down his giant body on the snow covered ground, patting his giant lap, "Well? Who's first?! Shall the little lady take the first turn?"
Luna giggled, "Yes!"
So they waited while Luna asked about the kind of things she wanted for her Christmas present, North digging into his giant red bag and, without fail, took out the exact thing she asked for. Then Harry shamelessly sat on the giant lap, North laughing that booming laughter, "It won't be long now! I can feel the years counting, young Harry!" He wagged his sausage finger at the boy, "I can sense some naughtiness this year! You should know better! So...what can I give you for managing to stay on my 'Nice' list?"
After Harry wrung his dry of the things he could ask for, Harry pushed Ron forward, "Go on! North doesn't bite. He might walk you down the plank though,"
Ron wondered what was it with the Khaos and drowning people?
North snorted, "I haven't done that since my days as a pirate!" He then smiled kindly at the nervous Ron, "Now. You are much nicer than those two back there. I am tempted to give them both coals. But them aside, what do you want for Christmas?"
Ron blushed, "Uhm...my Mum and Dad told me to never ask people for things that I can't get myself,"
North's face softened, "Good parents. Good lad. But these are presents! Gifts for you for being a good son! I want to gift you presents for being a good boy! Won't you at least grant me my own wish?"
Ron looked up at the his also conflicted brothers before looking at the Khaos family. Harry simply shrugged at him, the unhelpful jerk, while Luna excitedly nodded. Danny finally relented and say, "This is not charity, Ron. And you are not being selfish. North really want to give you a present for being 'Nice'. Trust me. You won't get this chance once you're an adult. This is only something magical that happen in your childhood. And if you parents decided to give you grief over accepting presents, just talk to me and I'll explain to them the difference between accepting a gift and being given charity,"
After a moment more, Ron relented and asked for the most humble thing he could think of; sweets that he had never tasted. North simply laughed and brought out a gift basket full of treats from around the world. When asked for more request, Ron insisted that he was fine with the gift basket. Likewise, his brothers only asked for joke gifts. North simply shook his head and handed them coals...that turned out to be chocolates. He then laughed when their ears steamed with the sound of train whistle when they took a bite. A joke gift indeed.
Once he was done, he stood up and looked at Danny, "See you whenever Manny request aid, Dante!"
Danny grimaced, "Still hate you!"
North just laughed and disappeared with a throw of a snow globe. After the mysterious North left, Olaf took out a different giant bag and pulled out presents for each of them that was given by friends and family. Ron and his brothers accepted the annual Weasley jumpers, grimacing how ugly maroon looked on him, while Harry stuffed his over Luna's head. His Mum probably thought that Ron and his brothers would remain in Hogwarts for the Yule. Although Harry then wrapped a blue scarf around Luna's head with a yellow sickle moon on each ends.
She now resembled a stuffed toy made of yarn with her long blond hair and her eyes the only things that was recognizable about her.
She said with her voice muffled by the fabrics, "I love these! They're so warm!"
Danny laughed as he took out more Christmas things to play with. Once he popped enough magical poppers and wore a silly jester hat with bells, he turned to start his grill. Ron excitedly asked, "Can I help?"
Danny chuckled, "Sure. But first," He took out the comically tall chef hat that had escaped from one of the party poppers, "Wear this, chef,"
Ron grinned. And despite the way the silly hat was too big and kept falling over his eyes, he enjoyed helping Danny season the meat and cutting the vegetables. Danny did everything by hands and Ron actually found the action enjoyable. Perhaps he took after his Mum more than he thought. After all, none of his other siblings knew how to cook and Ginny was always reluctant to help in the kitchen.
Have he found his calling?
Harry asked Danny, "Dad, Grandpa Gandalf gave me this,"
Danny took one look at the silky, silvery item in his friend's hand and said, "If you use that for crime, I will hand you to Walker personally,"
Harry paled, "Please no. I'll be good!"
Ron don't know who this Walker was, but he decided he will not be part of any criminal things if the name was enough to make his happily rule breaking friend behave. After Danny finally shooed him to play on the ice rink, he joined Harry after Elsa put the skating blades on his shoes, "What was that thing that your threatened you to not use for crime?"
Harry wrapped the fabric around himself as an answer and Ron's jaw dropped, "Blimey, Harry. Who gave you that?"
Harry huffed, his head bobbing over nothing, "The Headmaster, Ron. Didn't you hear me?"
Ron frowned, "How do you know it was him? I saw the note on the wrapper you put aside and there was no signature. Also, why are you keeping the wrappers?"
Harry sighed, "I recognize his handwriting. My Nanna used to teach me how to read a person's handwriting, swearing that it will be handy some time in my life," His eye softened at the recollection. He then answered, "I learned from my trip to Japan that even the wrappers can be considered a gift and we should take good care of it. I think it made sense, somewhat, since you have to buy the wrapper too," He shrugged, "Just saying,"
Ron blinked and was about to reply when his felt something go splat on the back of his head. He turned to brush away the snow and to glare at his brothers, "Oh. It is on!" He grabbed his friend, "Come on, Harry! It's war!"
Harry cackled as he shot off to prepare their bunkers on the other end of the swimming pool turned ice rink. Ron huddled down and accepted Luna's help as Olaf joined the twins to make snowballs. After that, it was a battle of the ages. That was...until someone, don't know who, made the mistake of landing a hit on Danny.
They paused when the giant man turned to glare on them. He grinned, looking positively evil Ron swore that he would gain a new nightmare featuring his best friend's Dad. A snap of the man's finger and it was raining snowballs on both parties. Neither have time to prepare and everyone became a casualty for their airstrikes bombing them relentlessly.
Danny cackled, "No one can win over me when it comes to snowball fight – gehk!"
His victory was cut short when a giant snowball landed on him. The group then turned to see Elsa giggling quietly behind her warm cocoa with her weird salamander beside her on the table. She then shot away when snowballs flew in her direction. She squealed when a few landed on her back.
Danny started chasing her, "Oi! Take responsibility! You started this, snow cheeks!"
Ron watched as Elsa created shields of ice before launching her own snowballs at Danny. She then looked at them, "Who wants revenge?"
Danny gawked at her before shaking his head at them, "No,"
The children shared a look before turning evil eyes on the man. Danny groaned at that as he turned tail and escaped into the miniature forest behind the swimming pool. Though Ron thought he heard strange noises from the man but that should be impossible. After all, how can someone make the noise of a casket being closed?
Ron looked to see Harry grinning while holding a bowl of snowballs, "Oh...time to hunt the hunter,"
Luna giggled, "Uncle Danny won't make it easy for Mother Elsa, though,"
Harry winked at the Weasley brother, "You won't know Winter War until you are fighting with the Khaos,"
Ron thought that it was nothing more than kid's bravado but he should have known better. Harry never bragged. Not about anything that was false. He only bragged when he was sure of something and this was no different. It was unlike any snowball fights Ron knew.
Danny was a true villain of a horror movie that Harry once showed him.
He struck from the shadows and they were hard pressed to find him. Mother Elsa was the only one that stood at the end of the guerrilla fight. She was graceful and deadly as she danced around on the frozen ground, shooting her snowballs and shielding herself at the same time. When she disappeared into the miniature forest, it was as if the trees themselves were hiding her.
Also, no matter how they tried, Danny will pelt them with precise snowball to the head or the neck.
Ron was amazed that Harry managed to stick to the game for as long as he did until he too joined them by the fire under the outside grill station. In the end, Pepper served them some hot food right off the fire and hot melted chocolate drink that was so thick and luxurious Ron swore he would never be able to go back to the usual hot cocoa. He asked Pepper, "How do you make this?"
He kept the recipes in mind so he could write home and share it with his Mum.
The seemingly endless Winter War ended when Elsa squealed loud enough that they heard her. Harry hummed, hugging Luna like a personal body warmer, "Dad caught Mum,"
Fred looked at him, "How are sure about that?"
Luna answered, "Uncle Danny will always win. He is an experienced veteran after all,"
George nodded, "Reminded me of that old bloke that Dad told us about? You know? Mad-Eye Moody?"
Fred agreed, "Oh yeah! We've met him once. Always screaming 'Constant Vigilance' randomly," He grinned at Harry, "At least Uncle Danny never shouted random noises like him,"
Harry face was a careful blank parchment, "Oh. That Moody must be warning you. Dad is worse. He never give you a warning before he give you your heart attack of the day,"
Ron frowned, "Huh?"
"How could you guys eat without me?"
They screamed from Danny's sudden voice behind them while Harry just laughed. Ron rubbed his chest, understanding what Harry meant. Danny might be the coolest guy Ron ever met, but he's scary as all hell!
Still the best Christmas holiday ever though.
